Guest Reviews
- Graham (1/5): Room canceled when 15 mins away from arrival - Got a text when I was 15 mins away that it was cancelled due to a leak which was a lot of rubbish as we were notified by someone local in the village that they were renovating the place and it had been shut looking before the day of arrival. This could have been a disaster for me as I was due to start an event the next morning in the village. They could have let me know long before the day off check in that the room was available, totally unacceptable!
- Guest (8/5): - We didn't have a breakfast
- Patricia (4/5): Great location, friendly staff, however we will not be staying at the Cheviot again - We visit Bellingham a lot to see friends and this is a great location in the heart of the village, which has been an ideal place to stay in the past. We have been travelling to the Cheviot for many years now and have always found it to be an excellent stay, unfortunately the last three visits to the Cheviot have left us disappointed, first time back under new management saw us with no heating and only tepid hot water, which at the time we took in our stride, things happen, second visit, same although they had installed heaters, this time, again arrived to a freezing room and yes, there was a heater which when in use warmed the room well, however, knowing that guests were due, it would have been nice to have had this running prior to our arrival time.
Although advertised as B&B you actually have to go to a nearby outlet for breakfast which gives a 10% discount on overall cost.
there is a lot of internal construction going on and hopefully this will enhance the overall experience for future guests We just found it a little sad.

- Anson (9/5): Great location and very comfortable accommodation - Really nice bedroom & an amazing shower. I ate a pizza at the bar and it was filling!
- Chris J Sims (8/5): - great location, comfortable accommodation No breakfast, though did have arrangement with nearby cafe.
- Julie (5/5): - Location and room very good No heating, smell of food throughout the stairs/bedroom
- Kate (8/5): -
- Gaynor (9/5): Very comfortable, clean & quiet. - Good location in Bellingham with very clean, quiet & comfortable bedrooms. The staff were very helpful on arrival & we were able to store our bicycles in a secure shed, as we were cycling the Sandstone Way. We enjoyed our dinner & drinks in the bar that evening (Chicken & Burger), although food service did finish early at 7.30pm. Breakfast the next day was extra & was at a near by cafe, but again it was very good. We would definitely stay at the Cheviot again.

- Brian (5/5): 2024 was great. 2025 we won't stay again unfortunately. - Room was clean always well serviced The bathroom was bad the shower screen is hanging of the wall the sink area needs refurbishment
The shower works but is not the best for temperature control.
I called the property left a message regarding the screen as it could be dangerous. I had no response.

- David (10/5): - Very clean and welcoming the staff couldn't do enough never ate but they have a great choice of drinks at reasonable prices
- OLWYN (3/5): Disappointing to say the least!!! - There was no breakfast! Unbelievable in b&b! Had to go up the street to a cafe for our breakfast. Lights In the bathroom didn't work properly. The menu for dinner at night had absolutely nothing to my taste. All in all a very bad experience and unfortunately we will not be back. More choice of food on the menu. Lights that work properly in bathrooms.

- Derek (8/5): - Breakfast was good but it was about 150mtrs away at a cafe down the street, not very good in bad weather. see above
- James (8/5): Friendly hotel to stay in Bellingham with good pub food. - The room was very clean and comfortable and at the top of the hotel, so it was quiet.
En-suite was great with lovely toiletries.
We ate dinner at the hotel which was very good. A little disappointed that they didn't do breakfast, but they provided a 10% discount for breakfast at the cafe 200m along the road.
- Jennifer (1/5): Possibly the worst stay in my life - Nothing at all
- the exit Everything
Shocking entrance , horrendous dirty carpet on staircase to room.
Room looked like it had had a revamp of sought but not finished
Dated, shower horrendous , door handle falling off , sink cracked and tiles
Cobwebs , no sound proofing
Room smelt of stale smoke .
Totally horrendous and we really didn't want to stay for 5 mins. We tried to find an alternative accommodation in the area but due to last minute and quite rural we had no alternative.
We slept and as soon as light we left .
Tried to ring booking . Con and really will pursue getting a refund . This hotel is not fit for purpose and certainly not at all as advertised .

- Claire (8/5): - Barstaff were absolutely fabulous! Room clean enough and very spacious, very cosy, nicely stocked with coffee, biscuits, an oat milk option, water. It was ok for two nights, whilst attending a wedding. Hotel needs desperate refurbishment, all doors to rooms are different and stained, it has a very musty smell, the carpet on the stairs absolutely needs replacing, it's very very dirty!!!
- woodhouse (9/5): - Excellent location, very nice room with everything you need for the stay.
Bar and good food too. All ok
- Kathryn (10/5): Friendly staff. Clean & comfortable room - Clean & comfortable N/A
- Rebecca (1/5): Bad - They cancelled me in the middle of my cycling trip with one days notice (while in the middle of the bike ride) due to issues with plumbing. They really apologised, over the phone and said I would be reimbursed as by this time they had taken full payment. But then they then did not let booking.com know that they had cancelled my stay so it was down to me to do the running to get my money back. I phoned them a week down the line and they just said to me I would need to contact booking.com. When I contacted booking.com the booking.com representative said that the hotel had not even informed them that they had cancelled on me, and that the Cheviot was in the wrong on this. At the time of cancelling me on the phone they had named another place that would be able to accommodate me. When I phoned this other place, they couldn't, they hadn't had a conversation with the Cheviot about this and they said the Cheviot had no right to say that to me. So a pretty appalling establishment. But Bellingham is a lovely place to stay in, but perhaps go anywhere else.
- Anonymous (7/5): it was ok for our 1 night stay walking the pennine way - nobreakfast
- Helen (9/5): Superb -
- Becky (8/5): A stay atnThe Cheviot - Staff amazing Nothing
- Helen (8/5): Very good -
- Angela (8/5): Very good - Shower was ace ,great location , lovely room Tea cups would prefer a mug.. and sachets of better coffee if it's within budget
- Lindsey (10/5): Exceptional -
- George (3/5): Good location, poor standard of room and hotel facilities - location and meals, good local shops nearby there was no breakfast but offered 10% off nearby cafe that we did not want
No parking available
Rooms were very basic, small and badly in need of modernisation
Cracked sink in bathroom was simply filled and painted over
No scenic view outside window
having to negotiate 2 tight flights of stairs to reach room given
- Dana (10/5): Exceptional - Clean and spacious room
- Anonymous (7/5): Good -
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- John (7/5): Good - Staff
- Jeremy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Justin (8/5): Very good - Perfect location in the centre of town, nice quiet room located at the back of the hotel.
All facilities were good. No one had told us that there wasn't any food available on the night we stayed. The other pub was fully booked so we ended up having a Chinese take-away
- Gijsbert (8/5): Convivial pub atmosphere but complete privacy, peace and quiet in recently updated bedrooms above - Convivial pub atmosphere but none of it disturbed our sleep. Very comfortable large double bed, good lighting, warm carpets in recently updated bedroom on second floor. Very friendly, helpful staff Nicely upgraded/modernised bathroom but too cramped for comfort. Shame about no breakfast
- Gordon (9/5): Superb -
- Anonymous (7/5): We needed a bed for the night and it was available. - Beautiful location. No food available at breakfast time. A bit impersonal. No one at all in the pub when we left, to say goodbye. The front door was just left open for visitors to leave.
- Anonymous (7/5): This hotel feels like an average pub, location good room for improvement - Location
Good teas coffee snacks etc in the room
Staff accommodating Doesn’t feel like a hotel more like a pub with accommodation
Need to serve breakfast the option was to go to local cafe
- Ian (7/5): Good -
- Ewan (7/5): Check the front door key works! - Comfortable room. Good range of drinks and snacks. Good warm drying room Went to the cafe for breakfast. On our return discovered that the front door key didn't work. Told that by nearby shop that it didn't usually open till 10.
Fortunately a workman arrived with a key that worked after about 20 minutes who let us in.
- Fran (10/5): Brilliant 🤩 - Very comfortable and clean N/A
- Geordiepaul23 (8/5): Very good - Dog friendly pub. Good location, nice food.
- Cam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alistair (9/5): Superb -
- Andrew (8/5): Average facilities, but good location, friendly staff and good traditional pub food. - Good location, staff, beer and food. Room on the small side. No cold water feed for the shower, making it unusable.
- Graham (8/5): A perfect rest stop for hungry tired cyclists... - Great comfortable double bed, lovely bath/shower, top gastropub food. A perfect stay... N/A
- Steve (4/5): Disappointing - The staff were great both at check in, dinner and at the Bar. Rooms were decorated and equipped to a good standard (with the exception of photos showing the rooms had a coffee pod machine which they did not). What was disappointing was the bathroom and lack of hot water. In room 7 the bathroom had not been renovated and was very outdated (although clean) in room 9 whilst renovated the bathroom was tiny and had a completely inpractical sink tap which when on sent water onto the floor.
These things would have been tolerable but there was NO hot water in the evening (not ideal after a day out on the bike). Apparently the boiler needs replacing (and has done since January) and they have a temporary small one but this does not provide enough water when the hotel is full occupied.
- Calum (9/5): Very enjoyable - Central location excellent facilities for cyclists Small thing, having to go elsewhere for breakfast however they did set up a discount.
- Catherine (7/5): The lovely staff saved us - The room was recently renovated, modern and clean, shower was excellent and we ate in the pub both nights, food was excellent too, large portions and tasty. Staff did there best to help us When we first arrived our room was freezing as the heating wasn’t working but the staff got us an electric heater which worked perfectly. We didn’t realise how steep and narrow the stairs were, but again staff helped us carry up our heavy suitcase, thank you. No dedicated car park, so first come first served around the town, but free. No breakfast at the hotel but the nearby cafe was excellent with discount as we stayed at the Cheviot
- Ursula (7/5): Good value - Friendly staff and great location. Rooms large and nice tea and coffee facilities. The bedroom was very dusty, the tv didn’t work and there was no heating so the room was cold.
- Paula (7/5): Good -
- Amy (9/5): Superb - Staff were really friendly. Drinks were cheaper than expected. Great atmosphere in the cozy pub.
- Joanne (9/5): Perfect way to celebrate New Year - Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Pleasant restaurant with lots of choices on the menu. Food was excellent!
We had all five rooms for our group and everyone had a great time! Nothing
- Philip (10/5): Exceptional - Great place christmas get together, clean tidy comfy rooms.
- Alex (9/5): Superb -
- Linda (7/5): Convenient and comfortable -
- Jonathan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Moni (8/5): Very good -
- Peter (8/5): Good vibe about the place especially after dinner. Room neat clean and functional. - Our evening meal was taken at the hotel and my friends beef was the best my pizza was OK. Breakfast was taken locally at a café on their recommendation. Booking-in was tricky barman was more concerned with the bar clientele. Using booking.com is not a good way to handle this fundamental task.
- Annabelle (10/5): Amazing hotel for a great price - Lovely location and such amazing value for money. Room was a good size with a lovely bathroom and such a comfy bed. Wish we got to stay longer than 1 night Nothing
- Chris (9/5): Superb -
- Catherine (9/5): A lovely place to relax after a long day’s walk. - Beautiful room, very comfortable bed.
Drying room for wet walking gear.
Huge evening meal! Good ales.
Excellent location for the Pennine Way.
Convenient arrangement with nearby cafe for breakfast.
- Arthur (8/5): Very good - Food fantastic, bed really comfy and room was good and bathroom. Disappointed no breakfast as was booked for that reason
- Hilary (8/5): On the whole, very happy with our stay. - The bedroom was very comfortable, elegantly furnished. The staff were very friendly, and the restaurant was good, with excellent food. Bellingham is a very attractive village, and it's a beautiful area. 10/15 minute drive to Housesteads Fort on Hadrian's Wall. The bathroom was ultra-chic, with the most stylish taps, bowl and shower equipment, but they weren't very practical for the space, and splashed everywhere.
Breakfast is not included and is not available on-site, though they have a deal with a B&B up the road to provide residents with a discounted breakfast. (But we made use of the tea/coffee-making facilities, and nipped across the road for a couple of almond croissants and a bottle of orange juice.)
- L (7/5): Slightly less good than normal - Lovely pub in middle of nice little village Undergone change of ownership and some previously valued services like in house breakfast and packed lunch service no longer available. During our previous stays the hotel has been full of walkers, fishermen and cyclists so early breakfast is important. Suggestion to go to a cafe down the road that doesn’t open till 8am is not an adequate alternative
- Michael (4/5): Over priced, miserable staff and scruffy room - The location was perfect for the event we were attending. On arrival, we were kept waiting in the bar area to be shown to our room.
Some 15 minutes later, after asking twice if anyone was available to check us in, we were told that the guy was out the back!
When he came through there were no niceties, he showed us to room1, told us about breakfast being discounted down the road at a café and that dinner in the restaurant was served until 2030 that evening.
The room was two single beds pushed together, The headboards weren't even level! The ensuite has seen better days and there was no hand soap and only one towel - there were two of us staying! On returning to the bar to request another towel and soap, we spoke to one barperson who relayed the message to the chap who'd shown us the room, who then said to tell the - I presume owner - who was standing no more that 2 feet away! The message was then relayed again, with the owner then turning heel to go upstairs to get another towel. I followed and mentioned about last orders being 2030 for dinner, she said 'better make it 2000, as the kitchen might close early'!
The radiator in the room couldn't be switched off, the beds were very uncomfortable and the hot tap on the shower mixer tap was difficult to turn on. We had been told that this was one of the better pubs in the village, but the unwelcome welcome that we got led us to visit another 2 pubs further down the road. We also didn't eat in the Cheviot but chose the Black Bull. So glad we did! The staff in the Black Bull were amazing! So warm and friendly and the food was served in super quick time, was tasty and great value for money :)
The Black Bull also have a couple of modern rooms, so spend that little bit extra and stay there.
- Glenn (8/5): Very good -
- David (10/5): Exceptional - Very clean. Staff were really helpful. -
- J (8/5): Very good -
- Rodger (10/5): Good location, comfortable accommodation but over priced. - Good location, very comfortable room. Over priced considering it didn’t include breakfast
- Brian (9/5): Very comfotable room. it was serviced daily and left in exceptional condition -
- Scott (6/5): disappointed - room was lovely and quirky the fact it was a hotel with no breakfast option, only that there is a shop down the road , they wanted us to eat in there at night but are not bothered to cook you some breakfast in the morning 😖
- Walton (10/5): Exceptional -
- L (7/5): Good -
- Dominic (9/5): It was spot on,thank you very much - We love the pub and restaurant ,staff are friendly and really good food We’ve stopped here before but in one of the front rooms which has had a refurb, this time we stopped in one of the back rooms, it could do with a refurb
- Andy (5/5): GREAT FOOD TERIBLE ROOM - STAFF WERE GOOD AND LANDLADY LOVELY, THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST SUNDAY LUNCHES I HAVE HAD IN THE LAST 10 YEARS. THE ROOM WAS DIRTY, THE BATHROOM CEILING AND PAINT WAS DISGRACEFUL. POSSIBLY THE WORST PLACE WE STAYED ON OUR PENNINE WAY WALK, CANDY BAR WRAPERS BEHIND THE BEDS AND VERY DIRTY. JUST A RUBBISH ROOM AND NO WAY WORTH THE MONEY. SORRY
- Hannah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Joanne (5/5): Cheviot pub and food excellent room not so good - Breakfast was fine No milk in the room to make drinks also dirty cups left from last guests also beds uncomfortable.
- Patrick (8/5): Nice village and people. Convenient base for Kielder forest. - Breakfast was not available, nice cafe opposite. Nothing, is typical inn accommodation.
- Christine (10/5): Cozy, comfortable room with an excellent pub & restaurant - Great location for dark sky searchers, many choices for EV charging within a 1-2 minute walk. The hotel’s restaurant was excellent! The room was well appointed and very cozy. We hope to visit again! Nothing comes to mind
- Isobel (10/5): Exceptional - Very comfortable beds, modern lovely clean bathrooms, convenient location for the observatory in Kielder Nothing
- Andrew (8/5): Great option to stay in the area. Staff very good and accommodating. Good restaurant and comfy bed. -
- Keith (7/5): Enjoyable - No breakfast option
- Hazel (10/5): Exceptional - The rooms are big, the bed is comfortable, the bathroom is big enough, very clean and tidy. Bathing products supplied as we're tea and coffee making facilities with a few of each for our use. Our daughter even had a coffee machine with pods supplied in her room. The hotel also has a medium but hot drying room, good for drying walkers clothing and boots from boggy walk.
The food in the restaurant was really tasty and well priced ,the staff were lovely, happy, polite and friendly. A great find for the Pennine way walk. Washing service would have been handy, as washing clothes in the bath was messy and tiring. Walkers might find this service very handy as the walks nearby involve very wet bogs. So, washing and drying were essential. The drying room is fantastic
- George (8/5): We would stay there again on a cycle ride. - Evening meal was excellent, although they didn't have staff for any breakfasts. There is a cafe across the street that opened at 8:30 so there was no problems. We were able to securely store our bikes and the staff were very good.
- Jackie (9/5): Superb - It was a lovely country pub type hotel. Friendly staff who couldn't do enough for you. Nothing
- Christopher (8/5): Lovely little village , definitely be back - Clean and tidy , big size room , friendly staff Beds were a bit uncomfortable, it was quite noisy
- William (6/5): Shower and bathrooms lets it down - Evening meal was very good Small room, bathroom and shower needs to be ungraded urgently
- Jacqueline (9/5): Our stay in Bellingham - Loved the hotel, it was spotlessly clean with tea & coffee and bottled water provided. It's in a great location with local amenities literally on the door step
The staff are lovely & friendly and everywhere is dog friendly. Can't fault this hotel, would definitely stay here again.
Jacqui, Mike & Oliver the Beagle The only thing that was wrong, and this was nothing to do with the hotel & totally out of their hands, our room was at the front of the hotel which is on a very busy main road & opposite a large Co-op who had daily deliveries at 6.30 every morning whereby a huge delivery van unloaded large metal cages making a lot of noise, along with other deliveries. We couldn't close the window as it was really hot weather
- Gill (6/5): Pleasant - Very friendly staff. Comfy bed and good shower. No parking provided.
Noisy after hours in the street below.
- Georgina (10/5): Exceptional - Beautifully refurbished!
- Leslie (8/5): Will be back next year in all probability - Excellent service. Room upgraded after faults identified in first room.
- David (10/5): Lovely country pub with friendly staff, nice rooms and good food - We liked it so much we stayed another night
- David (8/5): Great central location, parking at peak holidays could be a problem. I parked directly outside for my 3 days so not an i - Smart decor, comfortable room. Good location. Good food. Amicable staff Noisy first thing with lorry’s unloading at the coop, sound travelling up to 2nd floor, not a biggy but needed to close the window. Stair was steep. The door to the room and lock was original would have been better if included in the refurb. Could do with usb sockets
