Guest Reviews
- NZtrip19 (10/5): Welcoming with an excellent view - This hostel is bright and welcoming with very helpful staff and a lovely breakfast. Best of all they have a fantastic view of the city. I would certainly stay again
- andrewlW6321DO (10/5): Long stay in Cusco - This was our first stop in a long trip and it proved a perfect welcome to South America.
We ended up staying a little longer than first expected and the hostel was very accommodating. James was a massive help with organising days out and giving advice. We also really enjoyed the breakfast.
The walk up the hill may wind you, but it's well worth it!
- 119bobl (10/5): Great youth hostel ! - I was traveling trough Peru. Nice to have warm shower, clean room with individual bathroom and good breakfast for a low cost. Everybody was really nice. I swear it's a good place !
- whelanf2023 (10/5): Great view and hosts! - The loveliest hostel ever!! James made us feel at home and helped us organise our day trips!! Pepita and pepito also were lovely hosts! … and the views WOW!!! Also big thanks to all the staff for everything.
- Tine (8/5): Fantastisk udsigt over Cusco - Boede der tre gange i løbet af to uger.
Definitivamente volvería a quedarme aqui.
- danlR5804MV (10/5): Great stay! - Very cute and friendly hostel. Senior James was very kind and helpful and made our stay a blast. We would recommend to anyone who would like a quieter stay in Cusco. The views from the balcony are great and it's close to the historic city and plenty of walkable streets. Great experience overall
- 932freddiem (10/5): Great place - Great place- super friendly staff. Amazing views over Cusco. Facilities include shared kitchen, great breakfast and tea available throughout the day. James sorted out Salkantay trek which was amazing- I believe they have other treks and tours available at great price. Thanks James and the rest of the staff at Samay Wasi
- fabiankG8527EG (10/5): Beatuiful view and amazing staff with James - The hostel has a very nice view over Cusco and the staff is very nice. With James you can book tours and I would really recommend it as he always checks that everything is fine. He will make a plan for you to visit Machu Picchu if you want. He even booked a second night in Machu Picchu Village as we had to wait two days for tickets. All in all it was a very good stay and the private rooms are cosy.
- chester (8/5): - The property its high on the hill you need a taxi to reach it, you can walk but will make you tire. Good staff, good breakfasts, nice view from the terrace.
- David (10/5): - The property staff was great! They helped to set up transportation to and from the airport based on our flights. Walkable to much of the historic district and shopping and restaurants. The breakfast was good and rooms clean and as described. Great options for day trips that we didn't have enough time to take them up on.
- Andrew (10/5): - Helpful staff who can help you organise tours etc, great free breakfast, quiet, comfortable rooms, but the best part is the unbelievable views.
- 980lars (10/5): Quite with good atmosphere - A place with very good atmosphere, most helpful staff, quiet and situated near Cusco center.
Breakfast at the terrace looking over the city and the mountains was something.
James was very helpful with investigating what we could explore in the Cusco area.
- X444IRlaurav (10/5): Cozy atmosphere with beautiful views - My biggest recommendations for Samay hostel. I stayed there for four nights and everything was great. The host and staff were always helpful, the rooms were nice, clean and they had the most amazing view of Cusco from the terrace.
It’s a small, cozy hostel with everything you need.
- Claudia (10/5): - Nice place
- Emma (10/5): - Great staff, every guest who has stayed there is super respectful of early morning schedules and the need for sleep as a lot of hikes and tours start super early. It’s not like a crazy loud party hostel. The breakfast is great, typically with eggs, bread, jam, and coffee or a great tea selection. The view on the balcony is stunning as you can see the almost the whole town.
- vielseitig (10/5): Impressive. Nothing can top it! (if you're not too demanding and don't mind the steep climb to the hostel) - I stayed 10 days in SWYH and enjoyed my stay. I had booked a private room and I was surprised how good it was (Room Nr.9 on the upper floor), From here I had a great panoramic view of Cusco even while lying on my bed :-). But of course the view from the hostel is over all excellent. The staff is very attentive and customer driven - from the reception Desk to the kitchen. Thanks to all. Breakfast is ok. I didn´t use the kitchen utilities. I didn't use the kitchen utensils, but I noticed that people prepared some really nice dishes.
The private rooms on the 2nd floor are also preferable because of the view and they are more quiet.
- williamlawrenceh (10/5): Amazing Cusco Hostel - This hostel is very cozy and accommodating with wonderful view of the city. This hostel is very quiet as well with clean common areas that have guitars and games. It is so cool to eat breakfast and have an amazing view of the city. Also the views from the common terrace at night are also great.
- AnthonyTux (8/5): Great stay in Cusco - Great location in the old part of Cusco. Beautiful view and helpful staff. James from Peru Inca Adventures was very helpful arranging day trips and our tour to Lake Titacaca.
- askeyp (10/5): Samay Wasi has it all. - The Samay Wasi was the best part of Cusco for us. We were scheduled to stay in other hostels as well, but dropped all of them in favor of staying at the Samay Wasi. We were there for seven nights. The view for one thing is unmatched in Cusco. The breakfasts are excellent. Price rooms are quiet and have nice showers with hot water. Bed mattresses are actually comfortable. Wifi is better than most hostels. The people working there are very friendly and helpful. The best of the hosts is James. He spent a lot of time in the US and speaks perfect English and Spanish. If your lucky, he will be the one picking you up at the airport. He is the man to talk to when it comes to tours and local things to do. He will take care of everything as far as that is concerned. Very calm, patient, and attentive. He will keep you on schedule through What’s App. My brother and his wife will be traveling to Cusco later this year and they will also stay at the Samay Wasi and rely on James as we did. HIGHLY recommend.
- 907mariusn (10/5): Awesome stay in Cusco - The place is not only located in the beautiful and quiet area of San Blas, but the staff is friendly and helpful to the fullest. I would defenitely stay there again and can wholeheartedly recommend this Hostel to other travellers. Extra Bonus: The have the coolest Hostel cat one can imagine ;)
- avah627 (10/5): Wonderful stay at Samay Wasi! - I had a wondeful 4-day stay at Samay Wasi Youth hostel in March. Location was conveniently close to Plaza de Armas and about a 15 minute walk to San Pedro market. I was in a double room that was very clean, had comfy beds and hot showers! Breakfast was provided and included delicious fresh orange juice, bread and eggs cooked to order. Free cocoa tea and hot water available all the time. The outdoor balcony has the BEST view of Cusco and was a perfect place to hang out with Chuchu the kitty and drink tea! Special thank you to James Aguilar for picking us up from the airport, and arranging for a ride back to the airport. He helped us get student tickets (cheaper) for a Cusco city and archaeological park tour and walked us downtown to secure our tickets. James was very kind, funny, and helpful and definitely made our experience in Cusco smoother and more enjoyable!
- Laura (10/5): - Excellent! The location is perfect, beds are comfortable and clean. The breakfast was delicious and the laundry service was flawless! Would go back in a heartbeat.
- Vance (10/5): - Very friendly and helpful staff. Great view of the valley and Cusco from the balcony. San Blas neighborhood is a beautiful location if you don’t mind climbing steps. Also very clean.
- Zhongyan (2/5): - Not good,not recommend.
- Brittany (10/5): - Such a beautiful view from the hostel.
Localidade otima do hostel. Recomendo.
- EDWIN (10/5): - James is a jewel. I would stay again.
- Inge (8/5): Worth walking the stairs - Ok you have to walk the stairs for this hostel but then you get to a typical backpacker hostal with a kitchen you can use, free mate de coca and a very helpful man at the desk. He speaks very good english as well. The rooms are small but have a great shower with hot water. They serve a simple but nice breakfast and on the roof you have a great view over Cuzco city.
- Rachael (10/5): - We had a great time here and wished we could have stayed longer. The best thing about this hostel is the shared terrace with amazing views of the city all day, especially dawn and sunset. We arrived on the evening of New Years Eve and paid a little extra for a room with a view on the 2nd floor, rather than no views on the 1st floor and we were so glad we did. The fireworks were amazing of course! Plus we didn't have to deal with the normal nightmares of NYE with everything we needed right there, including a guitarist and some other travellers having fun.
Henry, James and all the staff are really friendly, and we loved our double bed room with en-suite and a wide window onto the view of Cusco to wake up to. I think good hostels fall into two groups, the quirky, relaxed ones that make you think of a classic backpacker trip, and the new, quite sterile, types. Samay Wasay is the quirky kind. It's clean, the beds are comfortable and the water is hot, and at breakfast large flasks of hot water are on the tables so you can make Coca tea. We found it to be great value.
I saw some other people complaining about having to walk up stairs to get to the hostel - well it's only about 10 mins from Plaza del Armas, uphill, and we did it with a backpack each and it was fine. I think if you want a 5-star hotel, then go and book that for yourself.
If I came back to Cusco, I'd definitely stay here again, and have recommended it to several people we've spoken to.
- Joseph (10/5): - .
- Pedro (10/5): - budget hostel for sure but you get more than what you pay for
- Aftab (6/5): Preety but wouldn't stay again! - Our stay at samay wasi was beautiful but also painful. The view is from the terrace and room is beautiful and The complimentary breakfast is nice but the stairs to get up to the hostel is painful and will destroy you, Especially when you're suffering from altitude sickness!! You have to climb down the mountain whenever you want to get lunch/dinner, so making your way back to the hostal is exhausting. Regardless of the climb, I think our least favourite part was how cold the room was. The heating is only turned on during certain hours of the day, so for majority of the day the room is VERY COLD. We had some early morning days (leaving around 5am), so when we came back to the room (around 3pm) all we wanted to do was relax and unwind however this was very difficult to do in a cold room. I was also very sick on our 2nd day (was vomiting and dizzy) so my husband requested for the heating to be turned on so I can relax but they refused - this was not fun! So even though the view is nice I wouldnt stay here again. Better to stay at a hostal near the main square as its beautiful!
- Bronwyn (10/5): Central but tranquil - Kind, friendly staff, everyrhing was organized and exaxtly as promised. I was collected fron the airport, the breakfast was excellent and the views from my room were stunning. The capacity to sit outside( with the nice cat Bigotes) was another bonus. The choice of good cheap reataurants nearby was wonderful and the location perfect - really central but absolutely quiet and tranquil. I even saw hummingbirds from the roof terrace. I would return to this hostel and would recommend it to anyone fit enough to stay in San Blas.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - They only turn on the heat between 8pm to 7am which was not comfortable during the cold days. The heaters are pretty old in the rooms so it takes hours.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - They offered to pick us up from the airport, a tourist guide picked us up and tried selling his services on the way to the Hostal. When he realized we had everything booked he started being rude.
We wanted to pay cash so they charged us using an exchange rate that was 10% higher than the market and said it was how things were done there. They didn’t give us a ticket confirming our stay.
The bathroom had spiders.
- lisa valerie (10/5): Lovely place, great view of cusco - Our 5 night in Samay Wasi was just great. We got really confortable there. It is a bit up the stairs to reach but it was a good exercise for us after all the eating :) Paulina who does cooking, cleaning, morning breakfast was so nice and kind. She cooked with us in the common kitchen. We had a double delux room with private bathroom which was clean and comfortable, can be cleaned upon request. Probably the best shower we’ve had so far with good pressure hot water. It’s a no fuss hostel. Highlight is the view of Cusco as we’re a bit uphill
- Matthieu (10/5): Super! - Cadre charmant
Accueil sympathique
Et du chauffage!
- Laura (8/5): Worth the climb - I read many reviews of this place before booking. Most things rang true. It is a climb up the hill from the Central Plaza, but you get used to it. Make stops along the way. The heat DID work, when they turned it on at night. The showers were HOT and strong. Can't complain. The breakfast was good. I stayed for 1 week and felt at home pretty quickly. They allow you to use the kitchen if you want to cook. But one of the best features is the view. They have an open patio for common use and Cusco spreads out before you. You can watch storms come in, or the lights of the city turn on after the sound goes down. Great view and well worth the hike up the hill. There are also a lot of restaurants, small markets, bars and artisan shops in the quaint neighborhood of San Blas, if you don't fancy the walk to the main square.
- Ivy (6/5): Good view and excellent staff - The location of hostel may not be very convenient as it is a bit up to the hill. But due to this reason, the view is super great! The staff is very helpful too.
- Evan (10/5): Wonderful experience! - Airport pickup was wonderful! Staff nice and helpful. Will use again when I come down from the jungle.
- mary (10/5): Exellent view of cusco - Exellent view of cusco. Easy access and friendly staff. Secure place with tables and chairs to sit and view cusco at night.
Will stay there again any time. This place was just a few blocks from our trekking tour.
- Erika Junia (10/5): outstanding - Great place, four minute walk from centre, gorgeous balcony, really good facilities and staff really couldn't do more for you. And get their breakfast!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Bel hôtel, belle vue et bon prix. Personnel wow! - Bien localisé, le personnel est toujours disponible. Très beau séjour!
- Vika (10/5): A lovely hostel with a beautiful view - Samay Wasi is a lovely hostel with a cozy atmosphere and rustic design. From the second floor you get a spectacular view on Cusco. It conveniently located, about 7-10 minutes from Plaza De Armas. Check out "Organiko" Restaurant on your way to the plaza, it's an amazing healthy food spot. I definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a comfortable and quiet stay.
