Guest Reviews
- Maximilian (10/5): Wunderschöner Ort zum entspannen - Einfach alles! Super Location, super Ausstattung, nette Besitzerin! Einfach reibungslos
- Ben (10/5): Wish we had stayed longer - Tranquil, beautiful, has EVERYTHING you need, stunning views EVERYTHING
- Jade (10/5): - By far my favorite accomodation in New Zealand! Stunning scenery, loved the decor and so well equipped for a family stay despite no wifi or TV we had the best time. Definitely worth walking down to the river. We will be back!
- Robyn (10/5): - Beautiful spot, beautiful home - highly recommend staying longer. P
- Stefano (10/5): - Sistemazione davvero ottima, specie per vacanze rilassanti.
- Wilfried (10/5): -

- Antony (10/5): It was a beautiful home to stay in and I’ve recommended it to all of my friends. We were lucky enough even to receive so - It was in a beautiful private location, and a charming house with lots of space for us which felt very homely and comfortable. A few bugs around but mesh over the windows kept them out pretty well.
- Johanna (9/5): -
- Lars (10/5): -
- Kathryn (10/5): Perfect off grid oasis the cottage was perfect - Wonderful escape in this off grid oasis total relax and chill only wish we could have stayed longer !
- Marion (10/5): Incredibly cozy cottage with great amenities, ideal for a small group to stay a few nights. - Incredibly cozy and comfortable cottage with great amenities. The kitchen has all the equipment one could need. Everything was very clean and practical. We especially loved the record player and the fresh eggs that were provided for breakfast. We wished we had stayed there longer! The only very minor thing is that we spotted a few ants in the kitchen. Not an actual trail or infestation, just a few. I imagine it's hard to avoid in the middle of the West Coast rainforest.
- Tess (9/5): Fantastisch! - Fantastische locatie, heel uniek, waanzinnig uitzicht. Alles is aanwezig en meer. Vriendelijke eigenaresse. Ik zou het absoluut aanbevelen om hierheen te gaan! Het bed was wat hard voor mijn smaak, maar dat is persoonlijk.
- Ian (10/5): Awesome place to stay - This is an idillic place to stay a bit off the grid. Great views down to the coast.
The Cottage is well equipped with everything you need, feels so homely and welcoming.
We did the short walk through the bush to the river for an evening swim - awesome experience. Unfortunately we only had one evening here.
- Karl (10/5): Amazing! Stay for at least a few days to make the most of this property! - What an absolutely exceptional property if you like off-grid, eco-friendly, country vibes.
The host (and her gorgeous dogs) met us with a basket full of organic eggs that we enjoyed for breakfast.
You need to stay here for a number of days to enjoy its full potential. Unfortunately we were only here from 5pm until 10 am :-(
Keep in mind you need to bring all your food from Greymouth to cook as this property is miles from anywhere, and once you arrive you won’t want to leave!!
They do provide lots of herbs and spices and oils for cooking as well as a wide selection of teas. LOTS of games and books available as well, and an absolutely ROARING fireplace!! Divine!
Bathtub with a view over the forest too!!
And the most comfortable beds and quality sheets. Believe them when they say not to open the windows in the afternoon/evening. I tried to let some fresh air into the bathroom and got a room full of insects. There are plenty of windows in the living space with fly screens you can use.
- catherine (9/5): Nurturing vibes of a place that was needed. Also off grid which was a bonus as it adds an earthiness - There were robes and slippers available. After staying in a couple of budget places, this was the nurturing and comfort and cosiness we needed to keep us going. There were old school board games as well which brought back memories and kept us entertained. It was like being at a spa without the spa. Seeing the stars at night was beautiful as well. We stayed in winter but I can imagine summer would be more amazing. There wasn't much to not like. The location is remote, but if your okay with a vehicle and driving its fine.
- Sandy (10/5): There are no words...the most wonderful place with so much love and attention to detail -
- Sarah (10/5): Great place to stay for Kawatiri Trail - The cottage is perfect and has everything you need. The views are amazing. It’s like taking a step back in time and getting away from it all.
- Sylvia (10/5): Fantastic, will stay again - Was a lovely and beautiful place to stay. Fantastic views of the old forest from the back of the cottage. The beds were very comfortable, and there was plenty of books to read. What a fantastic find in the Westcoast of NZ. I couldn't find anything to dislike
- Braczek (9/5): See above. - Location in bush. Very private with nice walks. Thoughtful and natural decor. Would have liked to stay a few days. Nothing sticks out.
- Shekar (10/5): Exceptional - Fantastic stay experience. None
- Kim (10/5): Beautiful cottage in a scenic, relaxed location - The cottage is is a lovely house in a very quiet, beautiful location. The house contained all we required for our night stay, was beautifully decorated and was well supplied with indoor activities (board games, books, music system etc). We really enjoyed our night here and could easily have spent more time. Five of us were easily accommodated and comfortable. The house was also easy to locate off the main road (it is adequately sign-posted) and gaining entry to the house was easy. There were trails to the river which we would have explored if we had seen them in time! We would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting a comfortable, relaxed night's stay out of town. Nothing.
- Katherine (9/5): Superb - Beautiful and quiet location and an unique property. Best stocked kitchen that we have seen on our trip of the north and west of the mainland.
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Leonie (10/5): Exceptional location and stay - Idyllic location with a warm homely feeling. The hosts are great, kind and friendly. The walk to the river is perfect, with an amazing swimming location. Beaches near by which were outstanding! Horse riding down the road was a great recommendation from hosts. Games galore! Cd’s, tapes and records to keep you entertained! It was perfect in so many ways. Could do with a fan in bedroom to help circulate air. Fly screens on windows tended to fall off their magnets now and then
- Margaret (10/5): I wish we had stayed longer!! - This is a really special place. A beautiful, remote location with vistas all around, a lovely walk to the river for a swim, very comfortable home with lots of thoughtful touches. Loved it!!
- Katherine (10/5): Just a gorgeous energy, view calmness and quietness to this place. - The owners organised and let us know how to access the cottage. They were the most amazing hosts, as our eldest son became quite unwell and they allowed us extra time to stay so he could recover and allow us to continue travelling.
- Jo-ann (10/5): Exceptional - I loved the feel of the cottage and how it was appointed, it was a fabulous spot to relax and rejuvenate. The kitchen had everything you need. Loved it all, would stay again
- Hana (10/5): Beautiful location amongst the wilderness. The house was fully equipped, nice linen, comfortable beds and the cleanest a - Comfortable and exceptionally clean. There was nothing we didn’t like
- Katie (10/5): Beautiful cosy cottage in a stunning spot - It was our second time staying at Beaconstone and we had a great stay. It's an absolutely beautiful cottage in the most special spot with stunning views in every direction. It's a really cosy house and the owners have really thought about everything you need to make the stay comfortable, including good quality cooking equipment, oils herbs etc, and we were even given some fresh eggs on arrival.
- Jen (10/5): Exceptional - The situation was lovely, close to the river and in bush. Loved it being off grid and nice cottage.
- Anna (10/5): It was perfect. Love to go back again. -
- Toni (10/5): Totally worth the long drive! Great for families who want off-grid experience. - The best thing about this home is that the owners have put in every minute detail to make our stay truly off-grid, with a reflection of an 80s Kiwi Batch. We walked into quiet classical music playing from the radio, our young adults had a great time learning how to use the tape deck, cd player and radio whilst the older folks relished the authentic "Blast from the Past" experience - I had forgotten what it used to be like having the loud ticking wall clock to count the passing of time. The kids also enjoyed the experience of finding information from reading the many bush walking books (and other) supplied. For younger children, there are countless games and books from the 80s as well.
We came to Beaconstone after reading the great reviews about the isolated, off-grid location but this property surpassed our expectations in every way. The owners live nearby so were on hand if needed, (which is really handy when you are so far from civilisation.) They were incredibly helpful and even brought round some eggs from their chooks!
Another thing that was magical was that there is a short walk to a private river and swimming hole on the property. There is much more to say - the super well-equipped kitchen (best of all the places we have ever stayed), the incredible fireplace, the organic linen, the beautiful rimu woodwork and the spectacular sunsets from the deck! This place is a destination in itself. Thank you so much, we will be back! Nothing, it was amazing in every way.
- Jane (10/5): Exceptional -
- Steven (9/5): Great location to get off the grid! - Love the off the grid nature and being away from ‘modern’ life. A great view as well. Also loved the multitude of family games available. Jenja was the favourite.
- Sally (9/5): Delightful place to stay. Would definitely come again. The location is spectacular and the accommodation beautiful. - Stunning location and cottage
- Michael (10/5): Absolute heaven - Wow! What a place! Fabulous 2 bed cottage with everything that you could possibly need. It might be ‘Eco’ but it is luxurious. For us the icing on the cake was the view from the garden out over the trees etc. What a place to sit with a G&T and watch the sun go down. Cannot fault the place. Just wonderful
- Tipene (10/5): It was honestly amazing and will definitly go back oneday , home away from home , beautifully clean - On arival we met the hosts , welcoming and warm made it fantastic from the get go ! The house has everything plus more , weather was average and drizzly but it didn’t matter . The fire was ever so warm and cozy , the board games etc fun. Honestly 10 out of 10 for everything 🥰
- Luke (10/5): Exceptional - This off grid retreat is a true escape to the country! Absolutely stunning cottage with all you could need but the perfect level of disconnect. The views are amazing out of the windows and the beds were comfortable. Not having more days to stay and enjoy the place!
- Marianna (10/5): Exceptional - Great view , thought of everything . Cozy and familial
- Marcia (9/5): Superb - Loved the open fire on a winters evening. The Cottage was well appointed with a lot of consideration for guest comfort.
We will be back.
- Bernie (10/5): In the quiet - Loved the location, and the home allowed us to sit quietly and talk, and play games. Nothing, but remember to bring everything you need to eat and drink, including nice coffee.
- Raewyn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Joanna (10/5): Lovely remote peaceful cottage with stunning expansive bush views with distant ocean roar. - Fresh farm eggs on arrival and a welcoming host who greeted us then let us enjoy the property in private.
- Fideel (10/5): Exceptional - Looked nice from the photos, was so much more than we expected! All around amazing
- Zofia (10/5): Perfect place! - very cosy interior, facilities, comfortable bed, well equipped kitchen, fireplace, a lot of interesting books, CD player and radio
- Anna (10/5): Absolutely stunning - Stunning cottage, tucked away in the beautiful West coast bush . Pure beauty Absolutely nothing.
- Marylou (10/5): An incredible location, beautiful views and so comfortable and welcoming. - Stunning location and beautiful views. So comfortable and incredibly well kitted out with everything we could possibly need. Everything was perfect.
- Willway (10/5): Excellent we will be back again soon. - Clean and Tidy house
Lovely sunny spot with great views, comfortable beds
Good location for mountain biking
Friendly owners N/A
- Petra (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful home in a stunning setting and very friendly hosts. Nothing
- Jacek (9/5): Superb - Really great and non-obvious place.
I like the idea of self-contained places and this one is perfect.
- Scott (10/5): Amazing spot to get away from it all - The remoteness, comfort and space. Mosquitoes but a known quantity for the location
- Natalie (10/5): Exceptional - We loved our night at Beaconstone Eco stay. Really regret only booking the one night. Being city folk it was so nice to switch off and we enjoyed an evening of playing cards and listening to CDs. Lovely walks right out your front door. Gorgeous sunset. Loved it.
- Tmark (9/5): A comfortable off-grid experience - The location is absolutely superb, set in a lush bush area about halfway between Westport and Charleston. In spite of being "off grid", the place does not scrimp on conveniences like a full kitchen and BBQ. The wood-burning stove was a nice touch during a chilly and rainy evening. It really is off-grid: no television or wifi, and my phone could not pick up a regular signal. That was fine for us, but would be a drawback for an online addict. The old-time radio/stereo could, however, receive a lovely classical music station.
- Samantha (10/5): Stunning Cottage - Beautiful accommodation! Absolutely loved it! No smoke detectors, but I assume that's cause the fire place would set them off.
- Allen (8/5): Welcome break from modern day distractions. - Tranquil location. Sensitive to nature and Eco friendly. Nothing of note.
- Aaron (10/5): We really enjoyed our stay and will be back - If you want to disconnect from your busy life this is the place for you. It is very relaxing and peaceful. We enjoyed biking the many rides around and then came back to relax. Leanne our host was lovely and even gave us some amazing fresh free range eggs to enjoy. Amazing sunset views.
- Johanne (8/5): Very good -
- Carey (10/5): Location was fantastic, great walk to the river & lots of native birds along the way. - Everything Nothing
- Maree (10/5): Serenity abounds in this beautifully appointed eco sanctuary. - Beaconstone is a serene haven set in beautiful wild west coast countryside, stunningly framed by well placed windows, excellent outdoor seating and far enough off the main road to forget that there is a world outside the property during the stay. A fire had warmed the house for our late night arrival, and we were treated to spectacular birdsong in the morning. The cottage had everything you would need for a lengthy visit, and the house easily accommodated the three adults in our group. We didn't like leaving - our stay was too short, and next time we'll plan a much longer visit to take in everything that the property has to offer.
- Kerryn (9/5): A lovely cosy cottage, ideal for getting away from hustle and bustle and back to basics… walks in the adjacent bush and - very nice setting/location Didn’t see a freezer.
- Julia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Patricia (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely peaceful location, with all the facilities for a comfortable stay.
- Webby (10/5): Awesome - The peace and quiet and remoteness of the property
- Patrick (10/5): Exceptional -
- Inger (9/5): Outstanding quality - very special place. - Extraordinary quality and sustainability.
Fabulous private track through regenerating bush/wetland to the river. Should have read the info better, hadn't realised it was off grid and toilet/shower were separate, should have known. But the set up appealed to my sustainability values with excellent composting toilet and excellent facilities.
- Bep (8/5): Very good - Was told 5 min. from town, but was more like 15 min. from town!
- Lawrence (9/5): Superb -
- Sebastian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Li (10/5): No one needs network in such a place! - I like everything about the cottage. It has breath taking views and meets all my expectations of an ideal holiday home!
- Lise (10/5): Not luxurious — but perfect for what it is. If we ever come back to NZ, we’d stay there a long time! - Beautiful cottage in a rustic setting. The eco-lodge concept is the real thing — not just a sales pitch!! No contact with the owner.
- Fountain (10/5): Exceptional - A total New Zealand experience. Beaconstone is quirky but if you would like to spend time within secondary growth forest you will not be disappointed. This unique accommodation ticks all the boxes for a forest stay with all mod cons. The view from every window is delightful. It is exceptionally clean and well appointed. The cooking facilities are outside. They are well equipped and on a delightful deck beside the main room.
The shower and toilet, not too far away.
All and all we loved our stay.
- Gail (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hayley (8/5): Very good - The view from the room. The BBQ. Lack of aircon/fan in the room for hot days.

I proposed to my partner at their sunset lookout, it was perfect.
Also the owners were super nice and made us feel very welcome. Everything at this place was amazing.
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional - Warm, welcoming and homely. Beautiful outlook over the forest. Perfect location to recharge. The cottage is very well stocked with games, books and kitchen equipment, it's such a lovely place to spend time.
