Guest Reviews
- Julien (10/5): -
- Michael (10/5): Machiya Maya Gion is an absolute gem that pairs a serene, temple-side atmosphere with a perfect location, making it a 10 - Our stay at Machiya Maya Gion was excellent and offered the perfect blend of traditional charm and modern amenities.
Ideal Location: Walking distance to the Miyako Odori theater, old Gion, and Pontocho Alley. It is also close to incredible temples (like Kennin-ji and its dragon ceiling) and great restaurants.
Convenience: Very accessible, with luggage forwarding services just a short walk away.
The Space: Bright, well-equipped, and perfect for a couple or group of four. The updated high-tech toilet, shower, and deep tub were fantastic.
Having an extra bathtub in the secondary room was a godsend for soaking after long days of exploring.
Serene Atmosphere: We used the balcony every day. Listening to the bamboo swaying in the wind next to the temple was incredibly peaceful.
I would 1000% recommend this stay to anyone visiting Kyoto. Thank you for the wonderful hospitality! The property was nearly perfect for our needs, though the addition of an in-unit laundry machine would have made it a total 10/10 for longer stays, but there were laundromats close by as well.
I would 1000% recommend this spot to anyone visiting Kyoto!
- Jonathan (9/5): - Location was very good for Kyoto while being in a quiet area. Nothing
- Sebastian (10/5): -
- Marvina (10/5): Super excellent host, location, and comfortable stay. Loved our time and the environment:) - Location, the Machiya was beautiful and spacious for the entire stay for us 3. Host was super amazing, highly recommend!

- Mark (1/5): - We arrived in the rain and were shocked to find that the Temple "two bedroom suite" we had booked was actually a one bed apartment - and the other bedroom was in a wooden extension-type construction, across a flat roof without roof covering. Completely impractical to cross this in the rain and positively unpleasant in the night to use the only toilet back across the flat roof.
There are 26 photos on booking.com from the owner and not one makes it clear that you have to traverse an open roofless flat roof in the dark and the rain to get to the second room.
We couldn't stay there and had to find other accommodation providing proper standards. The owner was very unhelpful and seemed to think it was all perfectly normal and we should squash into the one-bed room part of the apartment. We didn't much like this either - see the photos below. So we left having been charged full price - no refund.
- Franklin (10/5): Perfect. - Loved the aesthetic of the space. Loved the location. Loved giving the experience to my kids of using futons on tatami floor to sleep (I used to live in Japan and did this every night). So that unique experience of it not being a hotel bed was a nice touch.
Truly worth the price for location. Just staying Gion district crosses off a few items on anyone’s must do in Kyoto list. We did a night walk tour 6:30-8:30 and saw several Geisha and other wonderful gardens and properties. We were a 16 min walk from Nishi market. Highly recommend.
- Penny (3/5): Disappointing! - There was someone waiting to let us in and explain how the door locks and codes worked. We were not warned about the low doorways and as my son is over 6ft tall he kept banging his head, to the point where he had a headache all day and we had to make the decision to leave. Additionally it was very noisy from the room above. I feel that it is falsely advertised as the pictures for the upstairs flat are used to confuse the person booking. Had we realised what it was actually like We wouldn’t have booked. I asked for part of the fee back as we were due to stay for 4 nights and only stayed one, however they did not reply at all. Neither did Booking.com, v poor service from both on this occasion.
- Melissa (10/5): Great stay ! - Perfect location! We enjoyed our stay. Close walk to restaurants, shops, sites and train station. We loved everything
- Jessica (8/5): - Great location, modern amenities in a traditional house setting The second bedroom has no curtains which lets the light in early and there isnt much privacy
- Jeremy (9/5): Perfect place to enjoy all the delights of Kyoto and especially Gion - Great location and beautifully maintained property Nothing at all. It was excellent. Exactly as a Japanese Machiya should be
- Bronwyn (9/5): Traditional well equipped central little home in Gion - Beautiful little property in excellent location in Gion .
Traditional and well facilitated
- Jonathan (10/5): Very nice place. We would definitely book it again -
- Mark (10/5): Absolutely brilliant place to make your Kyoto base - Absolutely awesome property in a brilliant location to access the sights of Kyoto as well as the cafes and restaurants. Nothing we didn’t like. Plenty of room, super responsive host, great base to visit Kyoto.
- Mart (8/5): Te gek!
- Christine (10/5): Authentic luxury - A stunning property with an authentic Japanese feeling and all the modern conveniences. Well located and helpful staff. Be aware that the two bedrooms are separated by the rest of the property, including a small outdoor area. Not suitable for small children who like to stay close to their parents.
- Hildegun (8/5): Koselig, japansk leilighet i det beste området! - Nydelig lite hus i japansk stil. God plass til familie på fire (to ungdommer). Likte at toalett, bad og dusj var adskilt, slik at fasilitetene kunne brukes samtidig. Helt fantastisk beliggenhet. Litt dårlig ventilasjon på soverommet.
- Rong Hui (10/5): Best experience ever - The location and the experience of being in a traditional house value more than any hotel could possibly offer. It is about 10 min walk to the train station but you are already in the center of the famous Gion district. The house is clean and traditional with modern house appliances. The girl at the front desk greets us whenever she's there. We had the best stay ever in any of our travels. I would book this house again when we return to Kyoto one day. Please take good care of the house during your stay. The upper floor unit wasn't available on our traveling dates (I know it's nobody's fault). It is slightly smaller than the first floor but the view is great. Other than that, it's mostly identical. We took a peak of it (with permission) as we checked out and they were cleaning for the next guests.
- Anna (10/5): Byl wspanialy -
- Nidta (10/5): -
- Sills (10/5): The photos don't do it justice. Beautiful, comfortable, well-designed, well-located - I really loved the interior design of the apartment. I loved the wooden floors that were headed. I loved the tatami room with the futons. I loved that there was a real bed for my 78 year old father. I loved the bathroom tile. And the shoji screens and sliding doors. And everything was new and excellently maintained.
- nyla (10/5): Would stay again in a heartbeat, most beautiful accommodation! - The most beautiful place I have ever stayed!! The view from the bedroom is phenomenal, there is so much space for two-four people and it was so lovely to stay somewhere truly authentic. The staff were amazing and provided the best local recommendation and booked this for us. It was our favourite meal in Kyoto!! Nothing not to like!
- Milne (10/5): Great authentic accommodation in an amazing location. - It was nicely situated near the outskirts with lots to do within walking distance, beautiful accommodation and altho it had other buildings around it felt like you were alone, I have no negative feedback, i did bump my head a few times but in 6'2 so its not uncommon.
- Siim Kera (10/5): Unique - Really nice and unique stay in a traditional house. There's a nice balcony as well, that we didn't get to use, because it was too cold, but in the spring-summer-autumn it's perfect. Staff was nice and helpful. Location was quiet, few minutes away from the main area, but there were still some bars and restaurants really close to the accommodation.

- Maria (10/5): -
- Valeria (9/5): -
- Mylene (8/5): We enjoyed the location and room during our stay esp the bedroom with the sunken bath tub and comfy bed to wind down aft - Wonderful room/suite and lovely view of garden/trees with privacy and great bathtub to unwind at end of day. It would have been nice to provide more than 1 bath towel for each person for a 5 day; and trash bag liners. We each had 1 towel and 1 trash bag liners for kitchen trash which wasn’t adequate given the length of our stay. Otherwise we really enjoyed the place! Not enough bath towels for week stay and insufficient trash liners for kitchen trash bins.
- Emily (10/5): - A beautiful way to experience a traditional machiya in an amazing area in Kyoto. It’s in Gion and close to everything you might want to reach but the road itself is very quiet and peaceful. Nothing!
- Tim (9/5): Great position. Beautifully refurbished home. - Perfect location in the middle of Gion. If you want to experience the "old" Japan you can't be in a better spot. A totally refurbished old Machiya with modern inclusions. Best bathroom we had in Japan Nothing. Only thing worth pointing out is given it is an old Japanese home it is built for short people. Anyone over 5'8" will be banging there head alot like I did. Not a complaint, just worth pointing out.
- Lisa (10/5): Excellent stay in Gion - Great location! Liked clean and traditional. Had space for us to spread out. Had a washing machine.
- Peter (9/5): Superb - Great location with reasonable price for Gion location and convenienceof a kitchenette with nearby grocery. Although part-time, the staff exceeded our expectations by helping us book a taxi for 4 people (3 with large luggage).
Close walk to Yasaka shrine and Kiyomizudera. Close walk from Higashiyama Yasuu bus stop.
- Kaustubh (8/5): Very good -
- Jeff (8/5): Very good -
- Justine (9/5): Superb -
- irina (10/5): - Impeccable experience from all standpoints! Thank you
- Jessica (10/5): - Really unique and beautiful stay in a great location for exploring Gion. Wish we could have stayed longer!
- Anamaria (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jennifer (7/5): Good - Wonderful accommodations. Great location in Kyoto. Very responsive staff. Garden view is garden glance. Also apartments in view. Bathtub really can't be used before 6p as if you can see garden, they can see you. No robe or pajamas included and you have to walk across nice porch to get to kitchen or toilet from bathtub.
- Mike (8/5): Very good - No breakfast sadly Booking . Com pictures made it look
Super modern / larger but in the end was fine and good dollar value
- Michael (9/5): Superb -
- Kate (9/5): Perfectly located, perfectly formed. - The property was exactly as advertised and pictured. a beautifully renovated apartment in the heart of Gion. It was peaceful, contemplative, beautifully finished and the location is absolutely perfect. We loved the peace and quiet and the proximity to several amazing temples and shrines. The hosts were helpful, friendly and available.
By the end of the stay here we really didnt want to leave having settled into a different way of living. Magic. I thought when we first arrived that I wouldnt get used to the prpperty and the layout but I really couldnt have been more wrong. If you want to try a more authentic Japanese experience then this is the perfect apartment.
- Terra (10/5): Exceptional - Awesome location. Appreciated the bottled water in the fridge.
- Michael (9/5): Superb -
- David (9/5): Superb -
- Furlong (10/5): Absolutely beautiful - The house was absolutely stunning, open with lots of windows, over looking the temple next door. A beautiful authentic Japanese home, it felt very cosy and homely. The location is perfect, it is within walking distance to many restaurants, bars and temples. The staff were very friendly and helpful, even though there was a language barrier, we had no miscommunication, the staff use a translator app to ensure everyone is on the same page. We highly reccomend staying here!
- Deztinee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (8/5): Very good -
- Andrew (9/5): Authentic Ryokan in a perfect Kyoto location. - The property was an authentic Japanese Ryokan apartment, with a bedroom, lounge room with tatami mats and futon bed, kitchen, toilet, and bathroom with washing machine / drier.
The location was perfect - virtually next door to the Kennin-Ji temple, and a very short walk or train to all of the other sights of Kyoto.
Very easy access to restaurants in Gion. Moments away from the Geiko area of Gion, where we saw Geiko and Meiko at work.
This was a perfect place to visit. We would definitely stay here again on our next visit to Kyoto The only thing that wasn't perfect was the pillows, which were too small and too soft. Not a big deal.
And I kept hitting my head on the beams, which were very low.
Please note that there is no restaurant associated with this accomodation. We were OK with this, as the cafes and restaurants of Gion were a very short walk away.
- Helen (10/5): Fantastic location and traditional experience - Fantastic location, traditional style accommodation with modern amenities. Lovely tatami room and futons for the kids, very comfortable bed for us. Very nice bathroom with big bath. Nicely appointed kitchen. Location was awesome, right around the corner from the geiko museum, and 10 -15 min walk to key Gion sites and train. Friendly staff and unexpected early check in. Nothing, it added to our trip to Kyoto.
- Jonathan (10/5): Exceptional -
- James (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rachel (10/5): Perfect stay for our family - We stayed in the downstairs accommodation as we were a family of 4 (max 3 people upstairs as it overlooks the temple). The accommodation was perfect for our family, warm, charming and spacious. The underfloor heating was a bonus in the chilly winter nights. The townhouse is beautifully appointed using traditional Japanese materials. Highly recommend. Unfortunately the noise does carry from the upstairs apartment. Also, to other guests’ point, it is I the dark side but it fits with the traditional aesthetic so didn’t bother me.
- Salena (10/5): Wonderful machiya in a perfect location - Loved the location, spaciousness of the unit, the fact that it had washer/dryer, and how comfortable the bed was
- Charles (9/5): Superb -
- Chakashka (10/5): Exceptional -
- Song (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cate (10/5): We loved returning home each day. - Lovely traditional homely atmosphere in a fabulous location. We were a group of 3 couples and found it just big enough for group gatherings but we had lots of fun sharing meals. The temple next door is well worth visiting. There is limited space for luggage in the bedrooms. We also had some issues with the heating controls (hot floors!) but the staff were very quick to assist. Be aware of steep stairs and small rooms.
- Leah (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kaxa (4/5): Not welcoming - Good location for cultural visit Very poorly lit. Description specifies that there is no view but better lighting could make the property more inviting
- Melanie (10/5): Absolutely delighted with our stay. Everything we imagined. - The property was traditional but essential facilities modern. Very clean and well kept, right in the heart of Gion. So long as you know what to expect when staying in a traditional Machiya and not thinking 5 star service, it’s perfect!
- Nan (8/5): Very good - Lication was excellent Bedroom was too dark, could do more ceiling lights
- Linda (5/5): a bit disappointed for the cost - the location. view out of bedroom not enough chairs for sitting in patio. limited cooking utensils. cheap bathroom towels. not the greatest communication. having to pass thru outdoor patio when raining to use restroom
- Belinda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tj (9/5): Great location and clean property - Old school Japanese style home. Very cosy and comfortable. Nice double bed. Peaceful and quiet. The kitchen and other amenities were very useful. Travel light if you're staying here. Cobblestone path leading to the entrance. Narrow entrance making it hard to take in large suitcases.
- Nancy-louise (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lindsey (9/5): Superb -
- Karolina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Selina (8/5): Very good -
- Arley (10/5): - A beautiful, calm oasis in the middle of Gion. Spacious and relaxing apartment. Easy walk to many, many Gion restaurants. Super helpful host.
- Margaret (9/5): Peaceful Retreat - The location was perfect. Not too far from busy areas but lovely and peaceful. Not too far from train station where you can get to Osaka and Uji.
- Steve (1/5): Bad -
- Jennifer (1/5): Horrible, left without staying the night. - We checked into the room with the garden view with Western bedroom and Jape we bedroom. We smelled something musty from the entry and discovered it was coming from the Western bedroom. It was horrible. We contacted the owner multiple times. Turned the AC on and opened up the windows. I was going to have everyone sleep on the floor in the Jape set room and keep the Western room shut but decided not to. I spent a lot of money on this trip and property and that should t be okay. The host refused a refund even despite the smell. We found another hotel and left. Booking.com is trying to help us but the host seems unwilling to refund even though we didn’t stay there at all and we had one of their also witness the smell. Made the whole place also seem unsanitary. Two of us were feeling sick from the stench. Not sure how the other room is but do not stay in this room. There are other hotels in walking distance.
- Christina (3/5): Sweltering and Miserable! - The location was great. Before I checked in, I was informed that I could not check in until 6:00 instead of the planned 4:00 because the a/c was being fixed. Well, I had to drop my bags, so I showed up at 4 to be told that the a/c could not be fixed and it was one of the hottest times of the year. They gave me no options to stay elsewhere and left me in the sweltering heat with 2 useless fans. The only a/c that works was in the tiny far bedroom, so I had to spend most of my time in there and was not able to enjoy the rest of the house. This place was the most miserable stay of my month in Japan.
- Cherie (9/5): Great place to stay in the heart of Gion. - The location. The finishings were beautiful. Bed was very comfortable. It was a bit dark and musty, which is understandable in the rainy season. The pictures in the booking were a bit misleading, mixing pictures of two different units. It looked like it would have more natural light from the pictures, but we realized some of the images were from the other unit.
- Jeanna (8/5): - This house was in a great location! We were able to walk the Gion District as well as cross the river and shop the Nishiki Market area. For others who might consider staying here, please know that the house is small. If you are tall or big, this might not be a great choice. You also can hear EVERYTHING from the people staying below. As simple as a sneeze can be heard upstairs. So if you want privacy, or you are a loud person, this location might not be for you.
Booking and communication was great and super easy. Lots of directions on how everything works which was nice. Again, such a great location.
- Andrew (10/5): It was nice to experience a small insight into traditional Japanese living. Location was also fabulous - Traditional nature and location No hot water in the outdoor bedroom bath
- Wayne (9/5): A Must Stay if in Kyoto - Great Location very quiet at night good facilities at the property heated floors. Having to leave.
- Michelle (9/5): Incredible experience—surrounded by trees with a view of the oldest zen temple! - The location is superb! You’re right next to the oldest zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, and even though the neighborhood is full of tourists, Machiya Maya is on a quiet side street away from the crowds. The absolute best part about this 2nd floor unit was the outside terrace and large glass-enclosed bedroom surrounded by trees with a temple view. The Kennin-Ji temple is literally right next door, from our terrace you can see the rock garden, and hear the chanting—paradise! The sheets were super soft cotton, comfy, and the shower was incredibly powerful. The host was very helpful too! The front bedroom has a large bed, but the room is small so the bed fills the entire space, meaning you have to climb onto the bed to get on and off. There’s no space around it. Also, the kitchen and bathroom areas smelled a bit musty….not too much, but it was something we noticed. But the view and greenery made up for this:)
- James (10/5): Beautiful Machiya stay - This was an excellent booking for a Machiya experience in Gion, Kyoto. It was easy to find, in a peaceful location, and all the sights of the area were literally minutes away!
The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the bath was an excellent size.
Know what you're booking (this isn't a modern hotel!) and you'll have an amazing time! Would recommend!
- Christine (10/5): Serenely beautiful apartment tucked away on pretty side lane amid the action of Gion. - Beautifully crafted traditional apartment in a neighborhood of picturesque back lanes tucked into the all too popular but still amazing heart of Gion. Location great, a short walk to Gion Shijo subway station and river. Big screened windows overlook serene temple garden. Woodwork, workmanship, and traditional interior design and joinery a marvel--worth booking just to appreciate. Stylish, decently equipped little kitchen tucked behind closet doors. Balcony shaded by temple trees that was pleasant to dine on on balmy nights. Extremely sweet hosts--went out of their way to secure us a departure taxi after one proved unexpectedly difficult to order. Very small bedrooms, almost no storage, one bedroom overlooks parking lot and is dark (but surprisingly quiet), the other has full loft-style glass windows onto temple greenery, which gives it a lovely treehouse effect during the day, but no real curtains/shades, which makes it glaringly bright to wake up in and hot. Entry to front door and apt door through codes which are supposed to be sent in advance, but apparently aren't always received, plus front door is tricksy. This beautiful jewel-box of a machiya flat is probably not really comfortable for more than three guests.
- Rozmus (10/5): I would stay here again. -
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Astrid (10/5): Beautiful, clean and comfortable house, in the perfect location in Gion. - Everything in the property is beautiful. The garden in the middles of the room is amazing. The sheets have a beautiful design and the beds are super comfortable, including the futon beds. It is also in an amazing location in the center of Gion.
- Suzanne (9/5): Superb -
