Guest Reviews
- Ko (10/5): - Proximity to Gala Ski Hill, friendly staff
- Ruei Wen (9/5): -
- Pachara (9/5): Superb -
- Eddie (10/5): -
- Jakub (8/5): The stay was really great and memorable. Had great time, taking amazing baths and having great views - I really liked the mood of the place and how spacious it was. Available smoking spot, shuttles to travel to the city.
- Sylvie-erica (9/5): Superb - Historic ryokan with wonderful display of Yasunari Kawabata’s room and other memorabilia. Staff were wonderful and drove us into Yuzawa for dinner and picked us up afterwards.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Jan (10/5): I loved my stay at Takahan. For anyone interested in the writing of Yasunari Kawabata this is a very special place. You - Great location, brilliant views, friendly helpful staff, everything good!
- Eli (8/5): Comforting - The place is perfect for us after a long trip to chill and enjoy proper onsen. Also love every staff is super friendly and there is movie night too The bathroom light is kinda to shabby for my liking but overall it has been a great experience
- Stephanie (10/5): - We enjoyed the rich history and culture of this resort. Every single staff member was excellent, warm, very helpful. Highly recommend everyone to experience this resort. We will stay again and again
- Stephen (9/5): Fantastic ryokan style hotel with exceptionally helpful staff - The staff at this hotel were absolutely superb and extremely helpful carrying luggage and ski gear etc. Absolutely loved the onsen every day and also appreciated the complimentary Shamisen performance one evening. Bus service to town also very good. Nothing - liked everything here.
- Richard (10/5): - Very friendly staff, between hotel shuttle and ski rental shuttles, can pretty much catch rides everywhere. Nice to walk back to hotel, very safe.
- Stasia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ronnalin (10/5): Exceptional - Comfy , snow, dinner
- Chia Ying (10/5): We enjoy the time stay here - Historical hotel. People are very very nice. Very good service, all our family had good time. The food is also very good. Local source, prepared with the heart. The only thing is I suggest hotel use locker for the snowboard storage.
- Andrew (8/5): Hidden Gem - This was the unexpected highlight of the trip. We booked here as our first location option at gala was full, and what a surprise it was. It's very Japanese for a westerner but a beautiful experience. Very warm and clean.
- Apple (10/5): Exceptional - It’s a hotel that full of historic atmosphere along with wonderful hot spring, delicious food amazing view and hospitable staffs. None.
- Sherry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tanawat (8/5): Very good -
- SUNG RAK (10/5):
- Patrick (10/5): - A place to chill and wind down. Onsen and rest. No snow at the moment
- Phan (10/5): It is the most wonderful japananese ryokan we ever stayed - The view is so beautiful, we can enjoy it whole day from balcony of our room. This ryokan with a rich history. There are cozy common living room with piano and museum. The onsen is good. There shuttle bus from ryokan so we can easily go to station. Last but not least, Staff are very friendly & helpful
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wonderful Ryokan - This ryokan has an excellent hot spring on-site. Their breakfast is excellent, and the staff were kind and accommodating. The room was quiet and very comfortable. However, most of the restaurants in Yuzawa close at 7 pm during the off-season (summer), so their shuttles don't run after 6 or 7 pm during the week. It can be a bit inconvenient.
- Ni-fei (9/5): Not Fancy but a comfortable hot spring Tatami hotel with good Kaiseiki dinner. - The location is great. It was close to the Gala ski resort (it's a 10 minute walk to the ski resort. it's much better to take the hotel shuttle). The Kaiseiki dinner was delicious. The view from our tatami room was beautiful. the hot spring bath house was good. I did not have a phone so when I arried at Yuzawa Gala train station, it was not clear how I could get the hotel shuttle. There was no sign at the station on how to get the hotel shuttle. Some local people was able to call the hotel for me to get the shuttle to pick me up from the station.
- Nopphon (10/5): Will surely come back to stay at this hotel again if come to Yuzawa. - Very nice staff with great location. Food and Onsen is also excellent.
- Pangsida (10/5): The hotel with beautiful historical design, I really love ryokan style room, the room very neat and clean. Staff very ni -
- Elaine (10/5): Exceptional - I loved everything about this hotel. The people, the service, the location. They picked me up from the train station with very warm welcome. Knowing I wanted to ski, they drove me to the rental place and then to the ski resort, even gave me a convenience note in 3 languages for me show other people to make call for me to notify the host to pick me up. They carried my skis, they gave me slippers....and given the language barrier, the host even drove me to the station and helped me to buy my train tickets. When the hotel restaurant was fully booked, the host booked me a restaurant outside and even drove me there back and forth. I could go on with all the heart warming details that made me felt home, it is the highest service level that I have never seen anywhere else. And most amazing was, I lost my credit card, a few hours later the host told me that someone text him that they found my credit. So someone has been looking around and checking which hotel I was in. I was literatelt stunned when I received my credit card back. With this super friendliness and integrity, I think I can learn a lot from Japanese people and their culture. So very big appreciation for Takahanand the lovely hosts. I will surly recommend this hotel and return myself in the future. Thank you! Nothing
- Ramlee (8/5): Very good -
- William (10/5): Exceptional - This is a great hotel with beautiful design, history and plenty of facilities. The staff was very helpful with the shuttle bus and our arrangement with exchanging guest at the middle of our stay. Note that even though it’s close to Gala and Yuzawa Kogen, do not expect to walk there for skiing. The shuttle also doesn’t pick up late in the evening in case you want to check out the Echigo-Yuzawa village, but we were able to walk there for dinner just fine.
- Agnes (10/5): Good Quality Stay - Staff is very welcoming and polite.
Food is tasty and alot of varieties.
Onsen is good, female bath has outdoor onsen, which is a blast!
Should include an outdoor onsen for male bath too. Food provided is reservation type. Maybe add some food vending machines for people who wans to get food out of the meal timings. As the place is close after midnight till 7am the next day, some may wan to get small bites after onsen since the baths is open till 9am.
- Weifeng (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tossapon (10/5): Totally recommended. Love the hotel environment and their staffs. Will come back again for Ski -
- 275aussie_a (6/5): A little disappointed - I travel with my 6 years old daughter to try out the hot spring and keisaki dinner, it quite disappointing after finding out it not accepting private booking for the hot spring, and the dinner is nothing you see on youtube !!! maybe is the price we paid for and the ryokan. so the hot spring is only suitable for adults or same sex parent if you have kid. Nothing special beisde the room has a small enclosed balcony area for relaxing and looking at the hill and the railway tracks. Staffs at the restaurant was very kind and friendly.....overall 7 out of 10 I will give. I was told it was only 10 minutes walk to the nearby ski ground, we ended up at Yuzawa Kogen instead of Gala Yuzawa ( i guess there is no shuttle service available in the morning)
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional -
- pattayainsider (10/5): Perfection all around - I went to go to the Gala Yuzawa ski resort next door. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus, just call them, and they drop off or pick up, including other nearby areas. Nice breakfast in a stunning Japanese style room, western style available. There is a wonderful natural thermal hot springs in the hotel, free of charge. Great after a day of skiing. The room was very spacious, traditional Japanese style, everything worked great. The staff were all very friendly, and spoke some English, with the help of an electronic pocket translator. I wanted a late check out, and they charged me around $15 an hour, which was well worth it, as I was able to use the hot springs and take a shower after skiing, before a 5 pm train back to Tokyo, 70 minutes away by bullet train. The hotel also has a 24 hour nice museum about the history, no charge, and lots of other things to do: a library, a piano to play, nightly movies shown, board games, etc. This was one of my favorite stays in all of the world.
(10/5): Exceptional -
- Naran (8/5): Great onsen bath hotel after snowboarding/skiing. - Onsen bath, a vast japanese style room with tatami matt and futon, and nice breakfast. The onsen bath opens from 14:00 to 9:30 the next day. Basically the whole night. The hotel is uphill from Gala Yuzawa station and the snow will hinder the sidewalk. So even though it's roughly a 12 minute walk, it'll be a nightmare. It's best to take the bus though we don't know which bus will go to Takahan, so it's best for you to check or ask beforehand. We already made a mistake and walked there.
Very expensive though we understand that there's not much choice for a hotel near a skiing resort.
Also, the room takes a bit more time to heat up the room than usual.
- Chin (9/5): Superb -
- Robbie (9/5): Wonderful hospitality and incredible food -
- Kyungjin (10/5): - The stay was a great experience. It was old, which shows the effort to keep the legacy. The staff were kind and careful to guide us how to enjoy the hotel.
- Verified traveler (4/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- socosaja (10/5): Wonderful place to get away for a night or two - My stay at the Takahan Ryokan was wonderful thanks to the welcoming staff, classic room layout and view, and history of the property.
I arrived at Gala Yuzawa Station a little before the official check-in time (3:00 pm) but was still picked up within five minutes after calling. The staff member on the phone spoke good English, as did the two staff members - both non-Japanese - who welcomed me at the hotel. Everyone was patient and went out of their way to help me and answer questions.
One staff member led me up to my room on the fifth floor of the hotel, showing me the entrance to the baths from the hot spring presumably under the property and the room Kawabata Yasunari wrote "Snow Country" in, both on the first floor, along the way. I was really happy with the room, which was quite large by Japanese standards and had a great view. As another reviewer noted, the amenities in the room are dated, but I thought that just added to the charm.
As a fan of Kawabata Yasunari, I really enjoyed the history of the place and the chance to look out on the town from the same vantage point he described in his novel. The comfortable seating - with tea set - on the room's balcony/veranda made this especially enjoyable to do.
Overall, my stay at the Takahan was one of the most memorable and enjoyable I've had. Highly recommended.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Friendly staff and excellent food. It’s like a museum. However the price is a bit high.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): Ms - Old Onsen with transport to pick u from station. Shopping street is at the same area as station. A little museum within the ryokan. Food is good for the price we paid. Staff recommended that We go to Yuzawa kogen the scenery is breath taking. U can get the rope way tickets at the hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- YARTE (8/5): - Charming hotel with lovely staff, very close to the Gala Ski resort
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Located right next to Gala Yuzawa Skiing Resort, with excellent shuttle service. Their traditional Japanese dinner is great too!
- Wing Nam (10/5): -
- 363martinp (10/5): Great traditional Japanese Ryokan - Authentic historic hotel situated between Echigo Yuzawa and GALA Yuzawa. Very friendly staff prepared to help out with information and pick you up after skiing. Just enough English to be of assistance but not too much English that it spoils the experience. Just get to Yuzawa on the bullet train, call them and they come and pick you up 5 minutes later. Fantastic onsen (and we've seen plenty) and just a very relaxed, traditional vibe about the whole place. Good breakfast buffet - lots of Japanese grilled mackerel and tofu - but bacon and some cornflakes if you need it. We didn't get the best snow in late February but the hotel was the ideal place to bundy off early, call the hotel pickup and head for the onsen
- SC (8/5): - Nice scenery. Close to Gala Ski Center and old town of Yusawa. But in winter and snowy season, needs to commute by shuttle to Gala or Yusawa. As a hotel with long history one should not expect very modern facilities but we appreciate the "historical" setup and very traditional Japanese style. F& B is very limited and only breakfast is provided. However, breakfast buffet is good
- 756GinoP (10/5): Just maybe my best hotel stay ever! - Okay, I've now concluded I've been too loose in giving 5 Stars for hotel experiences in previous reviews, because 5 Stars then doesn't do this hotel justice!
Japanese service and hospitality is always a strong point for us coming to Japan, but Takahan has taken it too another level.
This is my third Ryokan over the years, and though these traditional hotels always give great service, again Takahan even exceeded those.
The views are breathtaking, the rooms are what you would hope for from a Ryokan, the buffet breakfast better than anything else I've experienced in a dozen or so hotels in Japan, and just a quick shuttle run to the slopes.
The onsens are not 'top of the line', but yuzawa has several onsens and these are a quick shuttle ride away.
Hope to return!
- mariepB5106UU (10/5): Great getaway - Takahan is a gorgeous historic hotel in Yuzawa snowfields. It has its own On sen and provides a really friendly service. The rooms are traditional but very roomy (for Japan) and the staff incredibly helpful. We had a lovely few days there.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice hotel with nice staffs. Will stay again . Hotel arrange transportation to and back from places we are going. A small snow town. Onsen was also nice.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- 230angusg (10/5): Grand old dame. - One of the joys of travelling in Japan is staying in places that are allowed to age. Australian hotels are given the renewal treatment every 20 years at the most. Many ryokans are not there to be flashy, they are there to be relaxing. This old barn has all sorts of idiosyncratic features such as a fake traditional building features sitting inside the foyer of a 50s or 60s building next to an escalator. Fabulous. The room was large and the view terrific. Just lovely. The public bath is a ripper, also with a great view and a great cold plunge pool. It was lovely to eat the pre-ordered meal in the dining room and strike up conversations with other guests (in English and Japanese). The dinner was fine but not outstanding and you could easily walk into town if you don't feel like a kaiseki dinner. If you have a rail pass I recommend popping up from Tokyo for the night for a change of scene. It's so easy
- Verified traveler (10/5): Location, food, service all excellent. - 3 minutes by bus from Gala Yuzawa ski resort (free pickup/dropoff). Nice views of the Yuzawa neighborhood. Great breakfast and dinner. Not walkable to Yuzawa town so suggest you opt for full board. Bonus: mini museum featuring the room used by the author of "Yukiguni" (Snow Country) a famous Japanese novel.
- Ka Yan Estha (8/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is 100% the real LOCAL deal. If you would like to experience the comforts and traditions of a Japanese hotel, come and stay here
- MidaHmd (10/5): Best Ryokan ever... - If you are with family and need a place to rest after Gala Yuzawa, please look no further and just book this place...
I am a non native Japanese speaker, managed to find this place homely with the best breakfast and the best area nearest to Gala..
Let me list the best things about this place..

Takahan FTW!
- 9frederickk (2/5): Legendary hotel dying of inertia - It’s sad to see the legendary hotel where Kawabata wrote the novel “Snow Land” aging so badly. There are some lovely old ladies helping, but when you have to pay that much, you expect a clean room. They have a newer wing as well, but you will be assigned to your room randomly, making this hotel a gamble which you should avoid.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Amazing view. - Traditional Ryokan, felt special the moment we entered. It exceeded our expectation’s and was the highlight of our visit to Japan.
- KelvinNgHK (8/5): Nice stay! - Takahan is a traditional and relaxing hotel. It is located just next to the Gala station, and around 1.5km from the Echigo Yuzawa Station. Pick up/drop-off service can be arranged most of the time. The meal and hot spring are nice.
- Bruce_Baumbush (8/5): Excellent room, onsen, atmosphere & staff, but research and plan ahead so there are no surprises. - I love this venue. The onsen is awesome (see the picture of the information sheet) and the rooms and views are spectacular, particularly during the ski season. Here's some things to keep in mind when booking here and in the Yuzawa area. You must make a reservation for dinner at this hotel. If you don't, there is NOTHING to eat here (not even a vending machine with potato chips or cookies) and you will have to walk about half a mile or get the staff to give you a shuttle ride to town. The breakfast buffet is served from 7:30am to 9:00am, ~$16/person, nothing fancy. You can get by with only English, however, many many signs, information packets, and staff in this area are strictly Japanese language. There are two Shikanzen (bullet-train) stations in Yuzawa. The first is in the little town and is called Enchigo. The second is about 1/2 mile further down the track at the Gala Ski Resort and is very close to Takahan. When you call Takahan to have them pick you up, be sure they understand which station you are at. If you are calling the hotel from your cell phone dial it this way +81257843333. I did not eat dinner at the hotel so I cannot comment on that, look at other reviewers. There are restaurants and a couple bars in the little town around Enchigo station, best to research as much as possible on-line ahead of time. Enjoy!
- Carolynn (10/5): Cosy Ryokan - The ryokan is just within minutes to Gala Yuzawa Station. It provides shuttle service and hence, makes it extremely convenient to travel to both Gala Yuzawa Station as well as Echigo Yuzawa Station. This was the most enjoyable part of our stay in Japan. Love the Kiseiki Omakase dinner. The staff were all very friendly and always smiling. The only regret that we had was that we didn't ask for softer pillows earlier. Do ask for Soft pillows if you are not used to traditional hard buckwheat pillows. The room's bathroom and toilet are a little aged, which added to the charm to the hotel. We didn't mind it as they were both kept clean throughout our stay. We stayed on the 5th floor corner room, which provided an excellent view.
- NUR HARIATY (10/5): Luv the place. - The hotel is clean, luv the ryokan style room, friendly and helpful staff, awesome view from the balcony. Overall, very satisfied with the stay at Takahan.
- deonhemberg (8/5): First time to the snow - This motel is great, as my 21 year old son said,' the ratings doesn't do it justice '. It is close to the town and Gala snowfields. The staff are extremely helpful, even picked us up after 9pm from town.
It is the first time we've been to the snow as we have travelled from the Gold Coast in Australia, what an amazing view we have from our balcony. Recommend staying here. Taking in the full japanese experience...
- Breakfour20170802 (8/5): Over 900 years old Resort - First time to Gala, a very convenient place for skiing, just one and a half hour travel time from Tokyo to Echigoyuzawa. A nice family owned resort offering very good service. If you are considering to try tatami, this resort should be a good choice, very spacious room, price is extremely fair. Location may be an issue, they are around 1.5 km far away from Echigoyuzawa station but they offer unlimited free shuttle to/from station, you just need to make a call to the reception who is very welcome to offer this free pick up service. Highlight, the old man in reception is speaking very good english, and the breakfast is traditional and fairly yummy.
- Haig (10/5): Great stay will pick Takahan again - It was a skiing trip and it was great , staff kind and helpful
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Location & Service!! - Takahan might be a lil on the old side but its location is great and the service is warm n fantastic, closest ryokan to Gala Yuzawa Ski Resort and only a 3min FREE shuttle bus ride to Echigo Yuzawa for food n shopping. Breakfest spread is pretty good too!! I would stay here again for sure!
- Verified traveler (6/5): A charming hotel - A great authentic Japanese experience
- Kaz (10/5): A great visit and experience with my son. - My son (7) and I decided to head to GALA for his birthday weekend and I wanted him to have a Japanese ryokan experience. Simply put, he LOVED the place. In fact, he wanted to move to Japan after staying here. Overall, it was an excellent place to stay and the staff were absolutely wonderful. One night, with no taxi and tempreatures near freezing, one of the mangers offered to drop us off to a near by ramen place even though they had suspended rides for the day. Now that's service!
The room has a small bath/shower but my son and I never used it. We took advantage of the free 'onsen' every night before bed. We even got in a bit of pingpong and ice cream (for him), beer (for me) as a night cap.
- Maz (10/5): Historic hotel with more - Not far from the snow resort though there is a hotel shuttle every half hour till 6pm. Breakfast included very good pay a bit extra for a room on 5 or 6 floor with window view you won't regret it, what a view to wake up to. Library with Japanese books, museum and even a table tennis table make for an enjoyable stay.
- Sven (10/5): Heritage listed ryoukan - I love the Takahan. This is the 4th time we've stayed here. We've tried other places in town but keep coming back to it. They have a shuttle bus to pick you up from the station but can also take you to Gala and Yuzawa Kogen for skiing. Best onsen around.
- JeffYB (10/5): Out with the new, In with the Old - Booked a last minute ski trip to max out our "18 kippu" travel tickets, and just happened to pick this ryokan because of proximity to Gala Yuzawa Ski Resort, and the fact it had a highly rated onsen. And boy, were we glad we did.
Now the ryokan (inn) is an old, historical place, make no mistake about that, but it's rustic charm has been artfully blended into what I found to be a most pleasant stay - comfortable facilities, convenient onsen (with free flowing mineralized water, so much so it smelled like eggs LOL!), a very Japanese intersection of the old and new, a great dinner and truly friendly, gracious and accommodating staff.
The "kaiseki" dinner was particularly pleasing, the rice and miso making outstanding complements to the proffered menu. I was truly stuffed, and the sake sampler rounded it out quite heartily.
The onsen was available like almost round the clock, so never did ever use the in-room shower or tub. And the room was generously sized (for two) and quite comfortable, with a great view of the mountains (we were on the sixth floor). Tea and Japanese sweets were available, as were several sizes of "yokata", and both bath and white sento towels (save one set, for use in the onsen even after you've checked out - see my tip).
There was a lounge that showed old Japanese movies, a small museum, a library (of Japanese only books / manga), playroom for kids and relaxation lounge.
But it was the staff who truly made the difference, always smiling, helpful and genuinely hospitable, in a very old school familial way. In between bouts of skiing, and a hectic schedule, the warmth of good people in such a historical, rustic and yes old-fashioned place reminds us that the more things change (yes, the rooms had free wifi), all the better if they remain the same.
Highly recommended!
- nahnnei (8/5): Loved the serenity and old history of the ryokan. - Didn't have to climb stairs, high escalator helped!! Great lunch... quiet atmosphere! Loved the Tatami, sliding japanese doors! Loved the Onsen with the Sauna! You can take alternate with hot and warm springs! Loved the high quality amenities !! It was a great experience of a lifetime!!
- Miaw84 (2/5): Old old old - Very old and run down, staff are half hearted to serve. Location is far from town, and it's a steep walk up the hill to reach the hotel. They do have shuttle service but it is till 6pm only.
We paid ¥21,000 for a room with no meals here, I would go back to Hatago Isen anytime for the same price that comes with Breakfast. Total ripoff.
I am glad we did 1 night here only.
- Timsum7 (10/5): Amazing Old School Ryokan - Can't quite verify if the place really is 800 years old as claimed but what I can say is that it was a brilliant experience there. Very close to the Gala Yuzawa resort (first stop on the free shuttle) and the size of the accommodation as well as hospitality is brilliant to say the least.
Very roomy and spacious ryokan rooms for my family (4 of us) and even has free tea and mochi served in the room. The onsen is an absolute must-try and is what this place is famous for.
In regard to meals, you HAVE to book dinner and breakfast in advance and I would advise you to do so. The only downside to my stay was that they didn't mention it to me when I was checking in and upon dinner time, I was left with nothing to eat and had to trek quite a distance in the dark to make it to the nearest eating place.
Would go back again though if I'm doing snow sports in the area and I'd say it's one of the more authentic ryokans around.
