Guest Reviews
- Eric (10/5): -
- Rose (6/5): Breakfast was amazing staff were really helpful - The friendly welcome Too many pictures
- Mark (6/5): Pleasant -
- Chirivì (10/5): Exceptional - Great breakfast served by a lovely staff! Cozy and traditional place, big room and comfy bed Some bedside lamps didn’t work (but we didn’t ask to get them fixed)
- Gail (10/5): Best breakfast ever - It was small but quirky Unfortunately they were understaffed so no evening food service
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kimberley (10/5): Comfortable stay, great location and gorgeous breakfast! - Comfortable room, had everything you need and lovely breakfast 😊 Very minor but bigger mugs for a cuppa!
- Robert (9/5): Superb - Not many old fashion premises left. The atmosphere was great as was the staff. Breakfast was brilliant. The fact the promises look like they are closing.
- Colin (9/5): Superb -
- Richard (8/5): Very good - Excellent staff with the best breakfast of our trip. Lively pub with exceptionally welcoming local clientele.
- Hugh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jane (8/5): Very good -
- Roger (9/5): Superb -
- Ruth (8/5): Very friendly and great location - Breakfast was really good. For me, the staff were the real stars of my stay there. Very friendly and helpful. It really makes all the difference when you are somewhere new, and I'd be very happy to stay here again.
- Karen (8/5): Good value for money, great for a night or two - Friendly staff, good sized room, excellent and plentiful breakfasts! Very large bed too. Limited parking, poor operation of the shower (had to keep finger on button for continuous water). Rooms could benefit from some updating in decor/furniture
- David (6/5): Pleasant - Staff, location Very cloustrophbic
- Edward (9/5): A super stay, made great by the friendliness of the staff. - The staff were excellent, especially Wendy, Daisy & John. They were friendly, funny and extremely welcoming....they did everything to make our stay exceptional. Breakfast was to die for....the quality of the food was very high. Unfortunately, their chef had left and there was no dinner service....I was so looking forward to the steak & ale pie
- Greenleaf (7/5): Good - Friendly and helpful staff.
Convenient location for local golf courses and town centre.
Very good breakfast.
Pool table. Limited parking (in street).
- Susan (7/5): Good - Very well cooked breakfast and helpful, attentive staff.
- C (6/5): Pleasant -
- Emma (5/5): Passable - Staff were really friendly and the cooked breakfast was lovely - whilst there were negatives, I suppose £140 was a good price considering the location close to Edinburgh - we don't often stay away so difficult to compare. Scored a 5/10 purely because the bed is a big part of the review. The double bed was hard and ebbed away at the sides - we had to try and sleep in the middle but it was too uncomfortable to sleep. My 11 year old also had a camp bed, which, whilst we knew about after our booking, was a little uncomfortable. I understand that B&Bs are tied to using campbeds and the rooms are small please invest in good mattresses and ensure your basics work. The shower needs some major attention, the shower head did not stay in position in the holder and thus had to be held and the shower door did not close properly hence water was over the floor. I did feel it was clean generally though but definately no spring cleaning done as the wall TV was caked in dust. Just the room let down the friendly staff and amazing breakfast
- Angus (8/5): Perfect staff and a lovely location - Breakfast was excellent. All staff were extremely friendly. All good
- Allison (8/5): Good location, lovely friendly staff and great breakfast. - Great location, staff were lovely very helpful, friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was excellent. The bar seemed pretty decent and relatively busy but not too noisy as it was pretty quiet in the room. Although the room was clean, especially the bathroom and bedding, but the carpet was not. Not sure what was wrong but had to wear shoes the whole time as it was basically sticky and not very clean feeling! It appears the hotel is also in the process of being sold so isn’t running fully in relation to other food etc.
- Pat (8/5): Great Scottish hospitality - Really brilliant staff all so helpful & friendly
Easy walk into town & river walk as well as the Waterside bistro
Great breakfast lots of everything you cold want The room was noisy from 7am as it was by the front door so no lie in. The room had no window we got the blind to work on the velux but not the window.
Bed linen & ensuite really clean but room needs a revamp and new carpet.
- Fiona (3/5): Poor - Staff and customers were friendly Breakfast some off it was cold & some had been reheated IE the bacon it was like a brick
- Douglas (9/5): Visiting family in Aberlady - breakfast was superb, could not have asked for better. John himself came out of the kitchen and asked what we would like and talked to us about it. Huge double bed was very comfortable indeed. Automatic light and fan when you opened the door, was a bit of a pain in the night, but othewrwise everything was fine. Managed to get parked each night in the immediate street with difficulty. As mentioned above, the automatic bathroom light and fan was a bit of a pain in the middle of the night. But do quite understand why this has been fitted. People are forgetful and would leave the light on and the fan running. Everything else was satisfactory.
- Robert (8/5): - Stop over mid journey. Very convenient, excellent breakfast. Very friendly staff
- Nicola (7/5): Good -
- Brian (8/5): Ideal for a short stay very central - Great location nice bar Mattresses need replacing

Staff fabulous, good friendly atmosphere in pub, great breakfast
Ideal for a couple nights for the lads on a golf trip
- Hamish (8/5): A good place to stay as the location allows easy access to the East Lothian links golf courses. - Breakfast was excellent. Very generous and prompt attentive staff. A good bar. Had to change room after the first night. Poor bed . The relocated room was excellent and the staff were very helpful
- Dave (9/5): Nice three days in East Lothian - Location, shower, cleanliness, breakfast & bar facilities were outstanding.
Had to park on the road, therefore golf clubs had to be lugged in each night. Storage room provided. Nothing
- Will (10/5): As above - Simple, efficient & convenient
Great breakfast very friendly staff Bothing
- David (7/5): Nice room good breakfast and friendly staff, but it’s a pub with 5 rooms not hotel, no evening meals available at prese - Friendly staff, good breakfast, comfortable room The outside of the place looks shabby with letters of the name missing. Parking a bit restricted especially at weekends.
- Robert (5/5): Excellent staff and a warm welcome - Location in Haddington which is a lovely town with lots to see and plenty places to eat.
The breakfast at the Golf Tavern was very good. Excellent portions. The website still states dinner is available however not food other than breakfast is offered.
The en suite in the room was small with a hot towel rail too close to the toilet. You had to sit at a 30 degree angle to avoid burning your legs. Mattress was lumpy.
- Stephen (9/5): Superb -
- Ian (9/5): Superb - Very friendly and helpful staff. Very cosy hospitable atmosphere and a fabulous breakfast.
- Lee (9/5): Nice stay at the Golf Tavern - Nice pub, nice room, nice breakfast, staff were really nice and polite, the hotel/pub is only a nice short walk into the town centre

- Philip (7/5): Good -
- Elliot James (10/5): - Nice place to stay staff friendly good bed amazing breakfast 😋
- Skilbeck (6/5): Convenient - Location to work & friendly staff Restaurant closed on an evening but not evident when booking.
Needs refurbished
- Graham (9/5): Superb - Best breakfast you will have in my opinion but I suppose it depends what you like. The choice is great and it is all cooked and prepared fresh at the time you request.
- Benita (10/5): Excellent bas always - Warm and great breakfast
- Linda (4/5): Poor accommodation and hospitality - Comfortable bed Room was very tiered. A huge scuffed section on a wall in the room as if it had been kicked on, only a tiny roof light for any day light. In December to arrive with no heating on in the room. The carpet had ground in dirt and you would not want to put your bare feet on.
When we arrived at 6.30 we were told the restaurant was closed. After a long day travelling we needed to get back in the car and find restaurant for food. Very poor accommodation and service. We did not stay for breakfast because of this experience.
- Maurice (10/5): very good - comfortable room and a good breakfast it was all ok
- Cameron (6/5): Somewhere to sleep - Staff were friendly and breakfast was good Dirty bed sheet and no hot shower
- Elaine (7/5): Very nice - The location was ideal for us as we were visiting our son and also it isn’t to far from Edinburgh. The staff were friendly and the pub had character. Breakfast could have been a little bit more organized but the cooked food was very good.
- Alan (7/5): Adequate - Clean and satisfactory A bit basic
- Elaine (10/5): Exceptional -
- STEPHEN (6/5): - The property is old and needed a good renovation. No maud service. Bed was not remade. Parking awful. Overpriced for the accommodation provided.
- Graham (8/5): The staff & facilities met our needs exactly for one night - Small & Friendly Parking is limited
- Adam (8/5): Great for a short weekend stay - It was perfect as a stop over. Getting charged for a meal I never had haha
- George (10/5): Exceptional -
- William (7/5): would recommend the hotel and hopefully we will be south for another visit next year - good Guiness. very good breakfast. excellent steak pie for dinner.
clean [if not new] linens. clean bathroom. generally a bit tired, needs a bit of redecoration.
given that the management had only taken over a few weeks ago they are bringing it on really well
- Malcolm (7/5): Good -
- Angela (7/5): Good -
- David (6/5): Pleasant -
- Richard (8/5): Very good - Good location - a short walk into town. Good bar but no noise heard in bedroom. A comfortable stay. Room a bit small, but fine for short stay and a larger space would probably be reflected in the price
- Joan (6/5): Doubtful if we would return or recommend. - Location. Good breakfast. Dated decor. View from bedroom window.
- Andrew (9/5): Friendly staff, comfortable room and great food at reasonable prices. - Nice bar and friendly staff. Gave a small taster of the ale and cider before buying a pint. Good knowledge of the ale.
Relaxed and friendly. Any questions answered.
Food was really good, both dinner and breakfast, plenty on the plate, you will not starve.
Waiting staff were as friendly as the bar staff.
Excellent service. I cannot think of anything i didn't like about the Tavern.
Ticked all the boxes.
Maybe one thing and nothing serious was that the bathroom light was on a motion sensor and it could do with being increased a bit as the light went out when in the shower lol, nothing major, just put hand out screen and triggered sensor again. I forgot to mention in morning to staff but i am 100% sure if i had it would be fixed that day.
If i am ever looking for accommodation in the area again i will try here first.
- Dylan (9/5): Superb -
- Clare (9/5): Good location excellent food - The location was great, the food was really good and lovely staff The room was a bit tired
- Gary (3/5): I would not recommend this to anyone. - I did not like anything and if I did not pay at the start I would've booked into somewhere else The bed was so hard it would've been comfier on the floor, very dusty, single beds not able to make a double.
- Earl (10/5): - Everything was great except they gave us the wrong breakfast which we did not order.
- Darren (8/5): Yes I would stay there again as it suited my needs for that visit - Convenient for the purpose of our visit.
Hearty breakfast. Whilst the rooms were clean they were getting a little tired and could do with a once over.
There is no off street parking. I was lucky and got outside the premises.
- Roger (10/5): Exceptional -
- Skilbeck (7/5): Nice staff & food. Good location - Staff are nice & friendly and food is good. Room I was in this time (5) could do with some refurbishing- and was single beds where I thought I had booked double.
- James (6/5): No chef - no breakfast - Golf tavern was friendly, clean and comfortable. Booked the breakfast for 9:15 but no chef = no breakfast even though paid for it.
- Steven (8/5): Very good - staff very friendly and the breakfast was very good, rood was comfortable and as a single person it had everything that I needed, the town centre was only a 5 minute walk away nothing to dislike
- Keith (8/5): Very good -
- Sue (10/5): - Small , friendly and clean
- Christine (8/5): I enjoyed my stay. The location to the town was excellent and yet quiet. - Breakfast was very good and the room was very comportable.
- Nick (7/5): Friendly staff, good breakfast, excellent value - Very friendly staff, nice breakfast, decent clean room.
- Kerry (7/5): Good - I liked the fact that Brian introduced himself
Food was very good - excellent in fact
We both had a great sleep
For our purpose the location was ideal Dated decor but current staff explained that they have just taken over
Skylight only - no other exit other than door to room
Ordered a packed lunch breakfast for one guest which was unfortunately not ready in time
Bit of a mix up with the breakfast order taken in the hotel
- Josephine (5/5): The staff and food very good the venue really tired - The food was excellent and good value for money the staff friendly and helpful and it is just a short and pleasant walk into the village of Haddington The Golf Tavern is so run Down even the name outside is broken the photo on website was obviously taken a good few years ago the entire property needs a complete renovation especially the carpets
- Terrence (10/5): Exceptional - Great stopover night All ok
- Scott (8/5): Very good -
- Rhodes (9/5): Very enjoyable stay. - Very convenient for Haddington and the staff were very welcoming. It's a local pub, so you can expect a lot of swearing after a few bevvies.
- Randy (8/5): Very good - Nice bar. Friendly staff No issues
- Samc (8/5): Cosy old fashioned feel within walking distance of this lovely historic town. - Nice cosy old fashioned feel to the place. Friendliness of staff who were quick to resolve issues if required. Only a few problems below but which will not put us off coming again. The homemade food was excellent both at dinner and at breakfast by different chefs. I don't usually order macaroni cheese but I will do next time I am here. I wasn't hungry to start with but couldn't stop eating the pate and toast until it was all gone. Staff member forgot to show us how to close the hidden skylight blinds so I was awake from 5.30am instead of 8.30am so don't forget to ask before you retire for the night.
Intermittent cigarette smell in bedroom but unclear where this was coming from.
Only on-road parking which may not be available close to the accommodation on a sunny day, school hols or where they have a function booked.
- Lorraine (8/5): - Positives - staff were lovely breakfast was freshly made to order and really good
Negative- rooms need refurbished and updated but you get what you pay for and it was very reasonable to stay. Would I stay again? Yes

- Mark (6/5): Good value for money - Quiet room, all good for the price Decoration: it’s quite run down
- Wilkinson (10/5): Always wanted to look at Haddington and staying overnight was very handy so close to Edinburgh - We had an evening meal which was very good value and breakfast was also great The shower cabinet was a bit on the small side
- Jes (10/5): Great stay on the way to Edinburgh Airport - The staff were fantastic, so friendly and helpful. Room was totally adequate for our needs, good value for money. Staff were highlight of the stay, so lovely! The woman offered us advice for our travels, helped us get sorted and sat and chatted with us in the bar. We didn’t catch her names but the two blonde lady was fab. Would definitely recommend this place.
