• Zoe (10/5): - Wir hatten das Zimmer im traditionellen Stil mit eigenem Onsen auf der Terasse mit Hafenblick. Es war sauber und perfekt ausgestattet, um einen traditionellen Aufenthalt zu genießen. Auch das Hotel verfügt über ein weiteres gemeinschaftliches Onsen und über einen Sitzbereich im Foyer, der sehr gemütlich zum Kartenspielen ist. Personal war sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit.

• Andrew (8/5): A beautiful, generous room in a charming hotel full of vintage appeal. - The Japanese style room with open-air bath was beautiful. It was the largest and most well-appointed room we stayed in during our trip. The view from the bath on the balcony was beautiful, we spent a lot of time soaking and enjoying the sun. The room was obviously prepared with care. All the staff members we encountered were friendly, polite and helpful. The room was peaceful and quiet. The retro feel of the hotel is honestly really fun. It felt like staying in the most glamorous version of the 80s. The laundry facilities were not great - a little expensive, and the dryer didn’t work very well. The overall condition of the hotel’s common areas (hallways, lobby, vending machine spaces) is a little run-down and could do with some love.

• HAIHONG (9/5): 性价比高 - 房间设施比较全，还配有胶囊咖啡机，房间正对黑船视野也挺不错的！房间面积也比较大，被褥需要自己铺，泡汤的地方比较大！离下田站步行10min，可以坐2站公交车，打车基本都不会接待（因为太近），用餐可以选择去下田站附近或酒店对面的金木亭或寿司. 大厅和一些设施真的有些旧，其实可以撤掉一些家具显的开敞些更好！

First time to sleep in a traditional Japanese-style room, and very fun experience! It is about 15 minutes walk to the Izukyū-Shimoda train station. Just wish it a little bit closer as walking on a summer hot day with luggage may not be fun.

• Verified traveler (6/5): Spacious bedroom but basic included services - Shuttle bus for the beach was not available despite the fact that it was written on Hotels.com. We were not informed proactively. They told us to use the bus or taxi instead (at our charge). We went for the bus close to the hotel, it never came… The building is old stylish and the smells/perfumes in the commun parts are not enjoyable. Almost all services are charged separately (ping pong, swimming pool …) and some have to be booked in advance (incl. swimming pool). You need a swimming cap for the swimming pool. They charge the use of the Onsen even if you dont use it. The Onsen is seperated man/woman and is naked. Many signs are only in Japanese. We were able to communicate with the staff in English. Some speak better than others. Dogs are accepted, we could hear some barking from our bedroom. The first night was quite silent but on the second night, we could hear some people scream/laugh around midnight. On the positive side, the room was spacious, the view was nice. Amenities were provided. There is a 7 eleven only few minutes away by foot. It is not far from the train station, when it’s not too warm, you can go by foot. Taxi to/from the train station is about 1000yen one way. They provide a little carrier for luggage, let us 🚿 after Check-out and called a taxi We went to Kujuppama Beach by taxi. A very nice small beach accessible from the road by a short but very steep road. We also went to Nabetahama Beach by bus (from the train station). Also a nice small beach.

Ceux qui n'ont pas aimé n'ont rien compris à ce charme délicieusement suranné. L'appartement avec tatamis, futons, magnifique salle de bain, avec bain traditionnel et onsen était superbe et luxueux.... Seul bémol, étant venus en basse saison il n'y avait pas de petit déjeuner, mais l'appartement disposait d'une cuisine et du nécessaire pour faire du café ou du thé.

The outdoor onsen with spectacular views over the bay was a massive highlight. The staff were friendly and helpful. Really enjoyed our stay. The fish foot spa is a fun addition as is the gift shop and kids activity area. The reception area and some of the general facilities are a bit dated and you can see the place used to be very grand. It is also a bit of a hike from the main Shimoda streets - especially on hot days, so taxi is almost a must-have

We saw the fireworks for the Black Ship Festival. The balcony onsen was extremely private and comfortable. Would highly recommend that this be your number one choice of hotel if you are in Shimoda.

The rooms could need - -central location in Shimoda -beautiful view from the room -friendly staff -the room and toilet had a peculiar smell (not coming from the tatami) and there were stains on the chairs and futons -the bathroom was a bit rough looking and could need some renovation -the facilities looked a bit old fashioned
• Diverd (7/5): Good - This is an older "resort hotel" with multiple buildings/ wings which retains its interest for the rooms and eating options. Situated 1 km from the station, facing the bay, outside of the Shimoda old town. Beautiful view from the rooms facing the bay, nice big room. Helpful and welcoming staff at reception. Set meal dinner and breakfast were delicious and well worth trying for one day, though the alcohol prices were high -- but there are also many other options in town, so please explore. Some options are 150 meters away in the fishing port with fresh seafood, all worth a try. This older hotel would benefit from "some love" (retouching the finish) in some areas, such as the pool and some parts of the room (shoji or walls showing damage). They do not make the futons for you in the evening, stating "health reasons" (this is a bad excuse). The Wifi also stopped working late at night during 2 of the nights... Corridors are excessively hot, which is especially unpleasant when you are trekking through the at times long complex paths to your room or to the ofuro (common bath).

But since we are staying in upper floor where we have to interchange to another elevator to reach our floor, the interchange floor is not well ventilated where you can feel the hotness and smell (may due to the public hot spring located on the floor)
• Jacob (7/5): Fear & Loathing in Shimoda - This place is like a window into the past. If you're looking for 5 star accomodation with the latest in furnishings and technology, this isn't for you. If you want to experience Fear & Loathing in Shimoda then definitely stay here. The rental price for bicycles was way too high. We considered it as parking by the beaches is ¥2000, but renting 2 bikes for the day was going to be over ¥6000 which is ridiculous.
• Adria (2/5): - Musty, dusty, rusty, and crusty…we stayed in the Japanese style room with the onsen. The room itself was great (minus a musty smell that permeated from the hallway) and the onsen was amazing. The lobby was dingy and needed an update about a decade ago. The hallways smelled like they cleaned the carpets and they never dried completely. The hotel was also like the Winchester house, like wings just kept being added on and some of them you could get to from one side of the floor floor and some of them you had to go down the floor and across to get around. It did have a kids play area downstairs, laundry, machines, and an arcade upstairs. It does say that shimoda beach is a two minute drive away however it is more like a 20 minute drive away. The area in front of the hotel is beautiful and great to walk but it did not make up for the grungy hotel.

• inge (10/5): Fantastic hotel with great amenities - Fantastic hotel with great amenities. We had a sea view room and I think almost all rooms have that. We enjoyed the Onsen that had everything one needs including small sauna. The complementary soft drinks in the cosy lobby was a nice gesture and appreciated. Staff were very helpful and accommodating our requests and questions. Our 11year old daughter found plenty entertainment, we all loved the skin care fish for example. Keen to go back. Also Shimoda is beautiful, lots to do, i.e. beautiful walks, rope way.

• yasushi (10/5): 小島と神社の鳥居が部屋から見えるホテル - ホテル自体はそれなりに古い感じですが、所々手直ししており、滞在中快適でした。素泊まりでしたが、スタッフの方々に親切に対応していただいて、このホテルを利用して良かったと思います。
• まーさん (10/5): - ここの露天風呂付きの部屋はおススメです。今回2回目。また来たい。駅からも近く、徒歩でホテルまで。
• Verified traveler (6/5): It was OK, will try different hotel next time - Nothing special because our room was self-service rate. Hot spring bath was Ok, not great. The employees were all nice. One bad service was that they charged us $3+ for each small bucket of ice even the hotel doesn’t have a ice machine.
• Winny (6/5): Not a must to come - Pro: Friendly staff Transportation Large bath room Cons: The hotel is old and need to renovated. They even using a "real key" for the door. The location is not a well developed tourist area. We spent three nights here and this takes too long time to travel to other part of Izu.

• Andrew (4/5): Tired Hotel in Quiet Location - Tired hotel that doesn’t cater well for international travellers. Rooms were not serviced during the stay and furnishings were very worn. Shimoda itself was very disappointing. We visited in early July and were looking forward to walking through Perry Road’s cafe’s and Jazz bars. However, it was like visiting a ghost town, with nothing open. Really disappointing. It’s a long way off the beaten track to visit here, but I would not recommend it unless you just want to come and surf at one of the beach locations several miles from Shimoda itself.

• Verified traveler (8/5): - 海の見える景色の良い部屋でした。和室で4人悠々と寝られる広い部屋です。 大浴場も海が見え、お湯も気持ちが良かった。 海岸沿いに遊歩道もあり散歩するところにも事欠きません。 スタッフの方もフレンドリーで良かったです。
• KEIICHI (4/5): 古いが一階ホールはきれい - 下田市街地まで歩いて１０分程度の立地にあり、目の前に道の駅があります。部屋からは、海が見渡せます。朝食は、種類が多くて満足でき、テーブル数も十分で混雑はありませんでした。部屋のトイレはあとから追加されたようでしたが、浴室は古くて使う気にならないものでした。大浴場があるので問題は無いです。但し、夜に長さ３センチ程度のゴキブリを室内で発見しました。この手の生物が嫌いな人は注意が必要です。
• kitamura (10/5): 最高に満足したホテル - 福山雅治をはじめ大河ドラマ龍馬伝の俳優達も宿泊したホテルでファンにはたまらないホテルだと思います。部屋は空きがあったという事でホテル側の計らいによりアップグレードして頂き特別室に宿泊することが出来ました。オーシャンビューの部屋からは港に停泊中の黒船遊覧船サスケハナ号を見る事が出来ました。 この部屋は親子3人にはとても広くしかも個室露天風呂付きで、トイレとバスが別で、それだけどもよし！とガッツポーズでした。夕食も個室に空きがあったという事で大広間ではなく、料亭上喜撰という個室で食事することが出来ました。予約時は、一泊二食としか表示が無かったのでどんな料理か楽しみにしていましたが、出された料理はどれもとても美味しかったです。アワビの踊り焼き、和牛の銅板焼き、伊勢海老の鬼殻焼き、金目鯛の煮付け、刺身、この刺身は特にマグロは口に入れた瞬間トロっと溶けてしまいそうな程のトロで美味しかったです。 仲居さんも人当たり良く、こちらからの質問にはご自分の経験談を話されそれを聞きながら楽しく食事をすることが出来ました。館内にあるエステサロン オールハンドヒーリングアクアにて、オーガニックアロマオイルトリートメントを人生初の体験をしました。とても心地よく疲れが取れて良い休日となりました。 お部屋のアメニティは、なんと雪肌精、そして個室露天風呂の洗い場にはミキモトのシャンプー、トリートメント類がありました。びっくりです。これを見ただけでも嬉しい気持ちになりました。シャワー等の水圧もしっかりあり快適でした。館内には室内プールがありましたが、旅の計画を進めていかなくてはならず、残念ながら利用は諦めました。次回は二泊くらいしてプールも利用したいと思います。朝食は和定食でした。どれも美味しく、お腹いっぱいになりました。 スタッフの皆さんはどなたも明るく爽やかな対応でとても良かったです。また是非宿泊させて頂きたいと思えるホテルでした。ありがとうございました。
• shawnt10 (10/5): Kurofune - Amazing place, room was very nice and enjoyed the baths. Definitely will come again. Go for the suites. There is plenty of choices for food also, from the hotel or local area. Out front is a park where you can relax and try putting your feet in the hot water.
• sortic (6/5): The facility is old but the service is good - The hotel built for a long time, the internal facilities of the old. The yellow switches on the wall seem to have a long history as the Shimoda City. But the restaurant, the bath is still very clean and tidy, the staff is kind and polite. There are large windows in the room, you can see overlook the Shimoda Port during daytime. Stay in March, the guests rarely, so is still a more pleasant experience.
• RJLevis (4/5): Nice view from the harbour - I'd stayed there because it was the only hotel with an indoor swimming pool and with nice views from the harbour. Unfortunately I realize once I had arrived that not only the hotel needs a good renovation, but also it's website. Staff is really helpful though almost anybody speaks English. Rooms are clean, but not public areas. It was really disappointing.
• J00lsC (6/5): A shadow of past glory - The Kurofune Hotel is a large hotel with impressive facilities, but sorely in need of an upgrade. Staff are wonderful and try hard to make up for the fact that this hotel has seen much better days and is now struggling to bring in the crowds. A nice tourist class hot spring hotel.
• Apple_HK (6/5): Excellent view and typical tourist hotel - We wanted a private on-sen and was a bit disappointed on the first day since the water did not look clean. I guess they cleaned up after the room was last used but since it was an outdoor on-sen, small flies and dust/dirt got into the water when the room was unused. We stayed for two nights and obviously they cleaned it up after our first night's stay so the water was much cleaner on the second day. For the price they are charging, I would not call it good value since good quality is quite average though in large quantity. While the grilled live abalone was a nice surprise, the lobster did not taste fresh at all. This is not a typical traditional on-sen hotel and perhaps too "tourist type" for my liking. But since we booked the hotel for the view, we could not be complaining about this.
• duaneger (8/5): Peaceful getaway - Stayed here with family to experience a traditional Japanese experience. The ocean view rooms were really spacious and included a private bath on the deck. The course meals (dinner & breakfast) were very traditional and worth the experience. Some of the best meals we had during our two week stay. The hotel itself was a bit dated; a bit of an 80's vibe going on here, but the Japanese style rooms with tatami (straw) mats contributed to a tranquil stay.
• returnthefarimbi (6/5): Party like it's 1989! - Ever go urban exploring and find an abandoned hotel? Upon doing so, do you run away in fear of monsters and pathogens or take a step inside and try to imagine what the place was like in full glory? The kurofune hotel allows you to explore the compelling purgatory between abandonment and old. It is glorious. The arcade? From 1989. The telephones? From 1989. The photos and information in the hotel guide (they offer next-day film processing!)? 1989. It is a living connection with the ruin of Japanese bubble excess and for that reason it is simply wonderful. Internet? Hahaha! How about a 1989 fax machine? The staff are great. In terms of value for money, compared to a modern business hotel or hell, even a holiday inn, kurofune loses. In terms of character, though, I find the kurofune as second to none.
• stratum200 (8/5): A bit dated, but satisfying - Stayed here one night in a room with its own rotenburo with an ocean view. Overall great experience and for me worth another go. The decor and guest events probably reveal the age of the owners/managers and therefore attracts similar generation people more but I'd say it's definitely worth a try if you're in the area looking for the classic japanese onsen hotel thing. The pool was cool. Food decent. Shuttle bus to station at certain times. Get one arcade, some kind of indoor garden, and the main onsen has pretty much everything you need.
