Guest Reviews
- Sabine (7/5): - I stayed in this beautiful traditional machiya in Kyoto for two wonderful weeks and it completely exceeded my expectations. From the moment I stepped inside, I felt like I’d traveled back in time while still having everything I needed for a comfortable stay.
The house itself is an old, beautifully preserved machiya — spotlessly clean, full of character, and wonderfully quiet, set back from the street. It truly felt like a peaceful sanctuary in the heart of the city. The adorable little garden and the small pond right in front with a big, graceful koi carp added such a serene touch. Waking up to that view every morning was pure magic.
Inside, the traditional futon was incredibly comfortable (I slept so well!), and the zabuton cushions made sitting on the tatami a real pleasure. The bathroom is just lovely — a beautiful shower and a classic Japanese cast-iron soaking tub that made every evening feel special.
The kitchen is big and old-fashioned, but quite functional; the microwave even has a grill function that handled everything I needed. The only tiny downside was that there wasn’t quite enough dishware and utensils for someone who likes to cook at home, an option all the more desirable that excellent supermarkets like Fresco and Izumiya are just a short bicycle ride away.
The location is perfect — right in central Kyoto, within easy walking distance to Nijō Castle and with very convenient access to all the main sights. The surrounding neighborhood is classic Kyoto: charming quiet streets lined with traditional houses, plenty of restaurants, and everything you need for daily life.
The host’s service was excellent — responsive, helpful, and genuinely kind.
I spent two unforgettable weeks in this lovely home and left feeling completely refreshed. If you’re looking for an authentic, peaceful, and perfectly located machiya experience in Kyoto, this place is absolutely ideal. I would return in a heartbeat!
Highly recommended.
- Alaitz (10/5): traditional house in kyoto such a dream - really large - comfy for families or friends group - we've been there and it was the most typical house of our entire trip. A place to be nothing
- Sarah (8/5): Delightful machiya tucked away near Nijo castle. - Quiet neighbourhood, unique machiya, easy parking. Not laid out as 3 bedrooms so had to rearrange our beds and one couple slept downstairs, very little cooking equipment so difficult to prepare a cooked breakfast.
- Christophe (8/5): Very good -
- BH (10/5): Authentic experience - Highly recommended authentic Japanese experience....while not close to the city core, its well worth it
