Guest Reviews
- Karen McGillion (10/5): -
- Marisa (7/5): 24h loud traffic noise. - This house is beautiful and authentic/traditional and the communication with the host was very easy. There's no feeling of peace or quiet inside this house, you can hear the traffic noise in any part of the house, 24h per day and that for me has ruined the experience. I read in previous reviews about the traffic noise, but I thought was only in the bedroom, but it's not, the living room was actually the worse part of the house and even in the bedroom further away from the road, the noise it's still very loud. Traffic noise was a deal breaker for me.
- sara (10/5): Super!!!
- barbara (5/5): - Clean accommodation and facilities It is VERY noisey, especially at night time (even with ear plugs!) there is a highway out the front so a lot of traffic.
The main bedroom had comfortable beds but the other room we had three futons set up for our teenages and they were more like camping mats on the ground. Ok for little kids maybe but not for 10+ year olds. They really struggled sleeping on the floor (had slept on futons many times before fine) and then the noise on top of that.
- David (10/5): An unforgettable experience in an amazing location that we can't wait to visit again. - The house was very beautiful as it was a historic building built in the early 1900s. The modern upgrades were a great compliment to the location such as the heated floors and the easy code entry system. We had a great experience staying here and the location of the property was also amazing! We will definitely be recommending this place to everyone we know! Nothing!
- Los (10/5): We had a lovely time in this beautiful, traditional house in Kyoto. Thank you 🙏🏼 - It was a lovely touch to provide a Japanese breakfast one morning and a western breakfast the next. Both were thoroughly enjoyed, thank you! As we were not a couple it would have been nice if the other room had futons in it to be used also but there were still 2 beds so still no issues. Being on such a busy main road is also not a positive but very easy to accept as a deep sleeper.
- Martin (8/5): - Authentic and excellent location A bit noisy

- Maria (9/5): Overall great stay. Loved the traditional Japanese style of the house. - Very clean and spacious. Enjoyed the ambiance. Appreciated the toiletries and the extra towels provided. Didn’t realize we had left behind a piece of jewelry, they promptly emailed and made arrangements to mail it back to us. Thank you for this attentive gesture. No mirrors in the bathrooms. Location is on a busy street. These were minor things. Would definitely consider staying there again.
- Martin (8/5): - We arrived a bit late - was no issue- very friendly! Breakfast was delivered - very flexible. Traditional Japanese house!
- Hilla (9/5): -
- Anna (10/5): -
- Dennis Her Her (9/5): Very unique experience staying in our own house for a few days! - Exclusive and unique Pillows :(
- YI-JIE (10/5): -
- Alessandro (9/5): -
- M (10/5): Location perfect, the house or self every beautiful, clean, authentic, well equipped we did not need anything. And the s - Everything was perfect Sometimes you can hear the cars on the street

- Peter (10/5): Authentic and memorable stay. Thank you - Genuine preserved property with soul. A bright property.

- Wayne (10/5): This was a very beautiful experience. Thank you. - We loved the experience of staying at a machiya so close to Kiyomizu-dera. The property was safe and secure. We loved everything about it. No complaints!
- Karson (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sarah (10/5): Perfect stay for our honeymoon - Location was wonderful, very close to the famous shop streets. Our host was so so kind, I had left a disposable camera at the previous hotel and she made sure that it arrived back to us, even offering for staff to wait for the mail to come so we could enjoy Kyoto! Luckily it arrived while we were there but she was absolutely amazing and made us feel so taken care of!
The property is gorgeous, and the bathtub amazing!
- Karolina (10/5): Amazing place for authentic stay - A staff is super friendly. A house is magical. Old and authentic! Owner let us even make a photoshoot inside the house. Breakfast arrived as agreed. Highly recommended! Small doors for europeans! We hit oour heads few times. 😀
- Minahil (9/5): Superb -
- Eva (5/5): Passable - Authentic Japanese style home with modern facilities, near to river for a beautiful morning jog. Thank you for the goodwill breakfast. The picture of onsen bathroom is actually only a bath tub with tap water, not hot spring. The private entrance description gave me the impression that it has free carpark, but I ended up paying 1500-2500 yen for each night of parking.
Both nights are unfortunately disrupted by motorbike speeding out on the road. Earplugs provided did not help.
Rather dark overall too.
- Jason (9/5): Superb - Amazing house! Very comfortable. The area is noisy due to its central location, but the earplugs did the job.
- Antonia (8/5): Very good -
- Aidan (9/5): What a fantastic stay! Would highly recommend! - Food! Bathroom! Tatami rooms! Everything was amazing Not many working umbrellas
- Emily (10/5): relaxing -
- Sandeep (9/5): Superb - Location was excellent. Close to shrines/temples/taxi stands/grocery and food options. The bath tub was wonderful and all of us enjoyed it.
Host provided us Japanese robes and tea and some snacks for a traditional tea party with instructions and it was a good cultural immersion.
The stay gave us an equivalent experience of a traditional ryokan with a good amount of space, two bathrooms with a great bath tub..overall would recommend this. The master bedroom was dusty and the other room had a lot of light and road noise. Anyways to correct this would make it exceptional.
- Jashan (10/5): Exceptional - Great location. Amazing bath and shower. A very cozy traditional home.
- Daniel (9/5): Superb -
- Chan (10/5): Exceptional -
(6/5): We was expecting much better for the price - Cleaning
Was full of dust in the rooms above the beds
- Benya (3/5): Poor - big room. plenty of space upstairs the service of the property, the house is too old, hard to access by car.
- Abdllah (8/5): Very good -
- Jawaher (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elia (10/5): It’s gorgeous, totally recomendable. -
- Kristy (10/5): Absolutely perfect experience - Perfect location. Beautiful clean accommodation with everything you need. Extremely comfortable and close to attractions. We felt a bit sad to leave it was so nice. Overall a wonderful holiday experience and would definitely stay here again on next visit to Kyoto. No laundry. But a coin laundry was not a far walk away.
- Thi (7/5): Good -
- Bernd (8/5): Very good - Lovely place in a really good area, would visit again.
- Zeyuanyu (10/5): Exceptional -
- Scott (9/5): Lovely Machiya in great location. Breakfast is delivered and was excellent. - Personal hand over with review of key facilities
- Lisa (8/5): Great for a Japanese-style experience - Beautiful house, lovely sitting area with Japanese tea, big bath, and great location for Kiyomizudera. The noise from the main road outside was awful from the second bedroom.
Wooden slippers for the stone floor downstairs were too small for most of us - Some may want to bring their own downstairs slippers.
The bath was lovely, but looked a little more mildewy than in photos. Didn't ruin the bathing experience though.
- Jesslyn (9/5): Superb - Ryokan experience felt nice
- Jobelle (9/5): Superb - Beautiful interior
- Grigorii (10/5): Exceptional - Just love !
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dr (10/5): Perfect experience of traditional Japan. - Truly the real Japanese experience. Authentic and beautiful. It had everything!! Nothing
- Shamo (8/5): Would highly recommend. Thank you. - House itself was so cool. The weather was extremely hot and humid and so the air conditioner in the front room was weak. But it was nice in rooms.
- Pornchai (8/5): Very good -
- Anna (10/5): Beautiful & stylish Machiya - beautifully designed, sophisticated & thoughtfully arranged the location is noisy but it’s a trade for being a massive house
- Kathryn (9/5): Superb -
- Albina (10/5): - I had an incredibly memorable stay at this property! The owner checked us in at our designated time and was very friendly, helpful and informative. The home itself was beautiful, spacious and clean. I enjoyed the tea set that was put for us to try. I felt so relaxed at this place. The location of this property is a 3 min walk from bus stops and right next to the famous sight spots of Kyoto. I highly recommend staying at this place if you visit Kyoto!
- Alex (9/5): Beautiful and relaxing private spot - beautiful house, bath was super relaxing and beds were comfy
- Hemant (9/5): Superb -
- Hesham (9/5): Superb - Really nice place, loved staying in a old Kyoto house. Modern enough to be comfortable. Something, probably dust, triggered eczema. A little far from train station and had to take bus mostly.
- Lee (10/5): Love this Machiya with extra ordinary pleasure experience. - Modern facility available with traditional Machiya. -
- Verified traveler (8/5):
