Guest Reviews
- Ravi (6/5): - Dining area was too much smell near the kitchen and everywhere
- Chee Keong (4/5): - To give the benefit of doubt to the property we checked in on Christmas Day and checked out the next day. The access road to the property was a narrow and steep dirt road that was quite difficult to drive on. Hopefully this is only a temporary situation. The staff were friendly and helpful when we arrived. But everything went downhill from that point onwards. The lights along the narrow corridor leading to the room was not working and despite informing the staff they were not rectified. We had to walk to our room using our handphone lights to see the keyhole to open our room door. Most of the power points in the rooms were not working and the Wifi sucks. There was no shower gel for the shower and we had to use a poorly packed hand soap for the shower. There was a party in the attic above our room and the thumping on the floor went on till late into the night. To make matters worst the ceiling light was flickering through out the night despite it being switched off as if it was syncing with the thumping upstairs. We were told that breakfast will be served at 7 am in the morning but when we went downstairs at 7.15 am there was no breakfast and we had a hard time communicating with the staff at the kitchen that we are supposed to have breakfast. I won't go into the details of the so call American Breakfast promised. As I have said at the beginning perhaps it was because of the Christmas period and there is a shortage of staff.
- Chalsea (10/5): Hotel staff were very accommodating beautiful view - Very friendly staff; beautiful and clean hotel; great view
- Ibrahim (4/5): - Pros:
-The villa itself is beautifully transformed into a hotel.
-The dining area is pleasant with stunning mountain views.
-The surrounding city and scenery are incredibly beautiful, offering picturesque mountain vistas.
-The management staff are extremely friendly, helpful, and welcoming.
Cons:
-Basic amenities are lacking; there was no tea or coffee provided with the kettle, and only two towels were available.
-The room was smaller than expected with minimal furnishings—a fridge and a non-functional phone, both empty and inoperative.
-Cleanliness was an issue, with the room and facilities not well-maintained.
-The breakfast options were limited to eggs, a small selection of fruits, a dish of jam, and low-quality coffee.
-Despite the villa's charming location, the high altitude led to challenging weather conditions during our stay, which included cold, rain, storms, and fog.
-The pricing per night is high, which set up an expectation of a more luxurious experience that was not met.
Conclusion:
While the villa offers some enchanting views and commendable staff hospitality, the lack of basic amenities and overall maintenance does not justify the high cost. Potential guests should weigh the aesthetic and service positives against the practical drawbacks and high price. Given my experience, I would likely explore other options before considering a return visit.
- Cedric (8/5): - Its a property about 7 km away from town. Its a beautifully built property . As i understand it has 6 rooms, and a pool table in the loft. Great staff. There is no lift but its not an issue. There are small things they need to see to. Like salt and pepper shakers ( rather than sticking your fingers into the salt/pepper jar. ) there are no tissues in the room/bathroom. No hand washers - but lovely towels. The scenery from the small restaurant is amazing. This is place i may stay at again
- kerstin (6/5): - The room was large, as was the shower area. The shower was pretty amazing and had good water pressure. There was good space for parking.
We think the place might be pretty new and suffering from a few teething problems. We arrived around 7.30pm and had to ask for towels, toilet roll and a hairdryer. The tv didn’t have any clear channels and wifi was patchy. The bathroom could also have been a little but cleaner.
However, the manager and his assistant were very friendly and polite. As we left very early (approx 5.30am) in the morning, we can’t comment on other amenities or the breakfast. The manager did try and offer tea and something to eat before we went but we didn’t want to impose as it was so early. We appreciated the offer though.
It's a large building with 6 rooms, and so quite quiet. We may well have caught them on an off day.
- Hanspetdr (8/5): - Zimmer klein
- Lillian (8/5): Hyggeligt - Super søde skønt sted. Hyggeligt
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Quiet, well-run, super clean. The breakfast was disappointing, though, and they wanted to charge us USD5 for a cappuccino - no thanks! We were spoiled by the excellent food in Sri Lanka.
- Øystein (10/5): - We had a great time here. It was quiet, well furnished and the food was lovely. They had a very personal service and we were followed up all the time. They also helped us to find a tuk tuk. In addition, we could decide when we wished to have breakfast or dinner and what we wished to eat from the menu. The location is lovely: you see the beautiful tea plantations.
The owner was very helpful and he followed us and helped at the train station.
Highly recommended. We are definitely coming back!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice location in the hills with the best shower ever! Clean & spacious with nice staff
- HARSHA S (8/5): - Nice homely property with friendly staff. Well maintained rooms with all facilities, Arun went out of his way to make our stay comfortable and ensure we had everything we needed.
- Marti (10/5): - El lugar apartado de la población y muy cerca de ella en coche 10 minutos al centro o en tuc tuc y caminando 1 hora
Lo unico que no me gusto eran que las servilletas no las cambiaban cada dia
El personal super amable y atento
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The location is amazing. The villa is so nicely built. Everything on point
- Gerard (10/5): Lovely slice of paradise! - We stopped here on the way to Ella from Kandy and glad we did!! This is a small place but you wouldn’t know it! The rooms are very spacious and the hosts were amazing, one even tended to my partners ankle after she sprained it! The food is also amazing, chef on site with a wide menu of things to eat!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Very basic hotel - It was ok. Very clean room but very small no chair to sit because no space to put the chair in the room.
Breakfast is very very basic. A la carte menu is very very expensive. Hotel situated outside from city center.
Nice view .
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was on a nice area near the Gregory lake. The staff were helpful.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good views from roon. Bad wifi, very slow, couldn't even browse
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Aardige mensen, goede ontvangst.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great property with an even better manager. Mr. Rohan was very accommodating with every one of our requests. He recommended incredible restaurants, helped organize a safari later in our trip, secured us taxi service to our next destination, and plenty of other things as well. All done with a friendly smile and genuine concern. Give this place a shot and you won’t be disappointed.

- Jan (10/5): Vänlig personal - Ett fint hotell med otroligt vänlig och hjälpsam personal. God mat på hotellet!
- Jørn (10/5): Wonderful hotel with great hospitality - No reason to write a lot. It's a perfect hotel, witch you will not find better in Nuvara Eliya or any other town in Sri Lanka. Simply the best…
I will be back!!!
- Nancy (10/5): Gracious, caring, clean, comfortable. - Vnod the manager, Nandi the chef and Vajira the “butler” couldn’t have been kinder. Their care went above and beyond. It was like staying with family who hadn’t seen you for years (and were super happy to see you). We left something of value at the hotel and Vnod found it, held on to it for two days and met us upon our return to pick it up with smiles and hugs just as the first time we arrived. The hotel is up high and has stunning views. Nandi said he would make us something special for dinner and it truly was. He fed us way too much all with pride and the desire to make us happy. It was all good. We will always remember our new friends. The pool table was fun too.
- Kelly (10/5): - Gorgeous motel in the mountain area surrounded by tea farms
Great chicken curry in restaurant
- Laurence (10/5): Very good staff, warm like a family - The hotel is like a small one but very warm. I arrived at 2030 at night and they were already closing the restaurant. When they knew I haven't have dinner yet, they (only the owner and a staff) insisted to make a dinner for me freshly. Although it took them quite a while, their passion and heart to service the guest were really great.
I was travelling alone and they stayed until like 10 to make my dinner and waited until I finish before they go.
- Giles (10/5): - Really lovely hotel just out of town-very new, very clean. Nice outdoor area to sit during the day and delicious dinner!
- T (10/5): Quiet mountain lodge in serene location. - Peaceful stay. Like a large home. Location in the mountains. A nice break from the heat. Staff cordial.
Great view.
- Verified traveler (8/5): An amazing stay, highly recommended! - The ambience of the hotel and the hospitality of staff impressed me a lot! A very warm welcome received from the manager during arrival. The room is clean and tidy where made you feel safe.
A very warm hearted arrangement made by the hotel, as the staff knew that we arranged a visit to Horton Plains and woke up at 5am. They prepared a breakfast takeaway for us and the driver! The manager is very helpful for the stay, impressed and highly appreciated for the assistance.
The hotel was built on a small cliff when may require vehicle to get on.
- Jane (10/5): Very comfortable - Great welcome, we’ll equipped room with lovely view. Actually on the tea plantation.
- Steve (6/5): Lots of flies and rather overwhelming senior staff - Admittedly, this hotel is out of town with fields all around it but there were a lot of flies in all the public areas except the dining room. This was because they kept the door to the dining room closed thus largely preventing the flies from going in. If they did the same thing with the front door (from the outside into the hotel), they would probably reduce the number of flies elsewhere in the hotel. And there are other ways of dealing with flies.
The welcome to the hotel by the manager and the chef was so effusive as to be overwhelming. Perhaps we are used to staying in bigger hotels where the approach is more formal.
When checking in, we were told that the Chef was doing a five course meal as if this was the only option. In fact, there is a long á la carte menu. The five course meal was tasty but one of the courses was tea/coffee and all the others were small. It was also more expensive than the á la carte, so we ate off the á la carte thereafter. However, there were often lots not available on the á la carte. Perhaps a shorter menu with everything available would be better?
The room was what we ordered and the manager did provide an extension lead do that we could have the fan heater on the floor - otherwise, it would have been on top of the wardrobe as the socket is set so high up the wall. The hot water was a bit variable but in the bathroom but not too bad. The manager provided blankets when requested.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very nice mansion style house with only a few rooms. All seems quite new and elegant. The staff is very attentive and polite. Really good and creative chef. Only the breakfast could offer some more different choices. Located in a very beautiful landscape but a little bit off the track. 1.5 km distance to the nearest restaurant.
- Paul (10/5): Lovely hotel with great staff - Immaculately clean hotel (the cleanest we have found in Sri Lanka!). The staff were very friendly and accommodating - they couldn't do enough for us. It is a short tuktuk ride away from the centre of Nuwara Eliya but that's a positive - the views from the hotel are stunning and the town centre is similar to other small towns in Sri Lanka.
- Asko (10/5): Hyvän mielen majapaikka - Oli erinomainen kokemus yöpyä teeviljelmien keskellä uudehkossa, erittäin tyylikkäässä Villassa. Palvelu todella hyvää ja kaikki pelasi. Lämmin tunnelma, huoneita vain muutama. Viehättävä teen poimijoiden kylä kävelymatkan päässä. Suosittelen lämpimästi.
- Verified traveler (10/5): A luxurious villa with a great view. - This place feels like your own luxurious home in the hills with a fabulous view and extremely friendly and helpful staff. You feel like you are in your own house. The rooms and bathrooms are five star standard. The cosy and plush living area in the attic is a great place to hang out with music system and a pool table. The open kitchen in the villa makes you feel at home. The staff go out of their way to make you feel like you are in your own house. A well stocked kitchen and an excellent chef to cater to anything that you would like. Couldn't hope for anything more. Kudos kudos kudos! Will go again and spend more time.
- R (10/5): Boutique hotel, beautiful location - - Great chef. I am filled with guilt because I forgot to tip the chef. Excellent guy.
- Great service from the staff.
- Ericka (10/5): Gorgeous English mansion with wonderful cook - Absolutely gorgeous hotel. The staff was very friendly and went as far as organizing our trip to the Horton's World End. The cook tried his best to fulfill our culinary wishes by making whatever we wanted. The facilities felt brand new while also having an old English mansion feel. The extra cost was definitely worth it!
- Matthew (10/5): A beautiful quiet villa in Nuwara Eliya - The Villa was situated a few kilometres outside the main town centre. My partner and I had a nice walk into the Nuwara Eliya, and also used a tuk tuk on other occasions. It was a perfect location and a tuk tuk is never hard to come by.
The staff were amazing and was a highlight of the stay.
The manager organised all Taxis we required from a day trip to Ella, to us moving on to our next location in Udawalawe. He also made sure our stay was going as planned.
The Chef cooked amazing meals and catered to what you wanted and not a set menu. From Sri Lankan curries and pancakes for me (Breakfast and dinner) through to more Western meals for my partner like Omlettes and lamb dishes, the food was amazing.
From the manager and chef to the waiters and owner, they were really welcoming sociable and made the stay more relaxing and comfortable.
The room felt brand new and had all the comforts that you would expect. It was a very comfortable.
I would highly recommend.
- Nicholas (10/5): The wonderful comfort - Would highly recommend to anyone. Comfort, good humour and excellent service as well as a general easiness. The chef and all staff are amazing, cannot give enough credit!
- W (10/5): Nice hotel at Nuwara Eliya - Lovely stay at the estate. We had to leave at 6am to Horton Plains and they gladly helped to pack a delicious breakfast for us.
- Rob (10/5): Perfect stay in Nuwara Eliya - What to say, our stay here was made so pleasurable by the fantastic staff. Everyone looked after our every need from Vnod the Manager sorting out our trips to Nande the Chef who cooked us delicious meals every day. The hotel is spotlessly clean, all the staff are very attentive. You could not wish to stay anywhere else in Nuwara Eliya.
Would we recommend this hotel? 100% yes!
- Bindi (8/5): great service - Service was great. We had a blocked drain in the bathroom that was immediately sorted. Room was comfortable but the only issue was the stron smell of the food throughout the property (especially fish - so if you're veg that could be off-putting".
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great B&B with cleanliness, comfort in semi-rural - This is a great B&B choice for cleanliness and comfort if you want a semi-rural setting outside of the city bustle. Room was very clean and spacious with a balcony overlooking rolling fields growing vegetables. Bathroom was contemporary with high-end shower stall. Breakfast was well-appointed "western style" with good service. I also took dinner here. Menu had good selections. Again, service was pleasant. It was a nice touch the house chef visited with the guests. I must admit disappointment when my menu item of a curry dish with "boneless chicken" arrived with all bone-in pieces. But, the staff then provided the full dinner to me complimentary on my bill. Hard to complain.
- Marc (10/5): Absolutely perfect!! - Everything about Villa Mount Royal is perfect! Everyone treated us like we were VIP guests.
The hotel is very clean and located in the middle of tea plantations, so it is well located if you want to take a walk in the tea plantations. Also, the pool table is perfect if you want to relaxe before the dinner.
Also, it is to be noted that the chief is very nice. You could ask him whatever you want, even if not on the menu, and he will prepare it for you. He will also make sure that you feel at home.
The manager also found us a driver to visit the area and another and another one for our trip to Yala.
- nazarulla (10/5): Chic boutique villa with great service - Very nice and neat room. Excellent service from Vinod and his staff. Nice view. Will definitely stay here next time I visit Nuwara eliya
- S J (10/5): A 'Royal' Experience and restful retreat - From our arrival to our departure we were made to feel very welcome. We spent a couple of nights here using it as a base to explore Nuwara Eliya and visit Worlds End. The hotel is a tuk tuk ride into the centre of town or if you enjoy walking it takes 30+ minutes along the road for a short distance and then on a good path alongside Lake Gregory with its park. You also pass the race course. The hotel itself is in a quiet location surrounded by tea country and vegetable market gardens where you can observe the locals at work in the fields. We enjoyed the culinary delights offered by Nandasena who is an experienced chef and has an eye for presentation and puts his own twist on things. His Sri Lankan cuisine is superb. The highlight of our stay was observing him at work in the kitchen and choosing the ingredients for our evening meal, he made us very welcome. He is ably assisted by Athula and Dilhani who help with housekeeping duties and with a hotel proprietor who is also a vegetable distributor the choices are wide and varied. The manager is also on hand to make arrangements for trips and onward journeys and speaks good English. We also enjoyed sitting in the garden and having drinks in the sunshine although if you require a beer or alcoholic refreshment you may wish to shop en route as the hotel did not have a licence. Villa Mount Royal is small enough to care and the staff are keen to provide an excellent experience without being to obtrusive.
- Pabz and Mitch (10/5): Excellent Stay - We really enjoyed our stay here. The rooms were well kept, neat and extremely clean. The surroundings were quiet and peaceful and had great views. The hotel staff was great and took good care of us. Felt very homely. The food was exceptional, had lots of flavor. The vegetables tasted really fresh, as they are grown in their backyard. We would definitely go back and would recommend it to everyone.
