Guest Reviews
- Richard (8/5): Our stay was very comfortable in a very good lovation to town centre. - The location
- Chris (10/5): Amazing - We really enjoyed staying at the Calais guest house. Especially the dining/living room was beautiful which had a terrace with a nice view. Also the breakfast was perfect, which was specially made for only the two of us.
- Chantel (10/5): - Breakfast was of very high quality and the staff was very friendly...we would definitively come back again and do recommend this place to others
- Cathryn (10/5): -
- Ritchie (10/5): -
- Sophie (9/5): -
- Jake (8/5): Relaxing and pleasant. - Lovely place to stay. Homely and quiet.
The room was spacious and stylish with a bath and a shower, inc. all the smellies that one might need.
We had a nice welcome and opted for the additional breakfast which was a home cooked affair and great value.
The staff were a delight. Perhaps a bit far from the main street for some, or in bad weather, but fine for our stay.
Breakfast isn’t inc. through booking.com, which I don’t think is very clear; but it’s really cheap and excellent. Not an issue.
- Andrew (7/5): - Very modern Nothing
- Markus (10/5): -
- Hannah (6/5): A pleasant stay, but not what we expected. - Breakfast was from 9-10 which was too late for us. It also wasn't included in the room fee so when we were offered breakfast the night before we thought it would be an add on. The upstairs section of the house is very much someones home, so coming in late and leaving early you left you had to sneak around. Room was pleasant, dated and a very old aircon but comfortable and had all that we needed. The location was safe and in a quite street. The housekeeper was very rude, she didn't make us feel welcome, talk us through the room, explain how everything worked. I was 8 months pregant and had to ask for help with bags which she seemed annoyed about. She was also annoyed by us not having breakfast, even though we never said we would be joining. She honestly left such a bad taste for us for our stay.
- Daniel (10/5): If I make it to Franshoek again.. this is my castle - Everything was pitch perfect. I know I sounds like a paid contributor. BUT this stay was insanely good. Great rooms, gorgeous building. Pool, and an amazing public space and small but deffo sufficient and wonderful breakfast.
- Frederick (9/5): Relaxing - Perfect breakaway and romatic setting with very friendly staff. No complaints
- Jon (10/5): A delightful, peaceful and welcoming stay in a stunning location. - Beautiful property with excellent facilities and stunning views. Excellent pool, which was very welcome during the recent heatwave. Very comfortable room, excellent wardrobe space (we were here for a week and had been travelling in South Africa for nearly 3 months, so this was most welcome). Great hair and make up dressing table, almost nowhere gets this right but this property nailed it. The hosts were fabulous and welcoming, they gave a complimentary breakfast due to a short power cut one evening, due to the extreme heat. This was so generous considering it was an event beyond their control. The breakfast was delicious ( thank you Blom) and you will not beat the 360 degree views of the Franschhoek mountains from their terrace. I would highly recommend to anyone.
We also met some lovely fellow travellers, which was an added bonus. Absolutely nothing.
- Pascale (8/5): - De afstand naar het centrum
- Stijn (10/5): Wonderful stay - Really nice, big room and lovely small swimmingpool.
- hershilla (10/5): Cosy comfortable good views good location - Lovely views from the balcony, good location, spacious and comfortable
Very relaxing and peaceful
Easy check in No parking designated for guests but that was stated on bookings.com
Air con a bit noisy
Breakfast not included in room rate - little bit pricey room only rate.
Pool not heated
- Peter (10/5): - Spacious and quiet Nothing
- Andrew (10/5): Ane & Carlos were great hosts and Calais Guest House was simply stunning! ❤️ - Calais Guest House had the real wow factor the moment i entered the property. It is stunning and I thoroughly enjoyed my seven nights stay there. Ane, Carlos and their team were so helpful and friendly throughout. Breakfast was delicious, served weather permitting on the outside balcony with lovely views of nearby mountains. I would definitely stay at Calais Guest House again! There was nothing to dislike about Calais Guest House.
- Ilizma (9/5): -
- Bradley (10/5): A beautiful property in a stunning setting, lovely staff too - A beautiful property in a stunning setting
- Marc (8/5): -
- Carla (10/5): A relaxing, comfortable getaway in a perfect Franschhoek setting. - Wonderful location—peaceful, quiet, and perfectly situated. The room was absolutely beautiful, and the beds were incredibly comfortable. Breakfast was great: simple, fresh, and just what we needed.
Our room was conveniently located right next to the lovely pool, which we really enjoyed. We absolutely loved our stay, and the owners and staff (along with the two adorable pugs!) were so welcoming and kind. Thank you for such a relaxing and comfortable experience—we’d happily return. 😊
- Laura (9/5): Lovely stay for a few nights in the winelands! - Lovely guest house just outside of town. Well appointed room and lots of space. Good outdoor area for relaxing and pool as well. Gracious staff and homemade breakfast was super !
- Annatjie (9/5): -
- Sumita (10/5): Can’t wait to return soon! - Lovely facilities, beautiful spacious room and great breakfast! Nothing!
- Wood (8/5): Lovely 3 days - Lovely accommodation The pool was cloudy for 2 days out of 3 so did not use it
- Josef (10/5): -
- Simanye (10/5): -
- Lehlohonolo (7/5): Couples place or a place where an adult needs to sleep, retreat and read a book - It’s a really beautiful property. The breakfast times were very rigid for me. It was strictly 9-10. Appreciated the alternative arrangements but perhaps it could start earlier.
- Sugden (9/5): -
- Charl (7/5): -
- Marcel (10/5): Great stay. Beautiful facilities. - Beautiful room and house.
- Van Der Schyff (9/5): Bastille getaway! - I loved that breakfast was included and it had quite a lot of seating areas... very luxurious, but homely! The fact that we couldn't connect to wifi and it wasn't a smart television. Pity our room didn't have a bath. Would have loved it to be a bit closer to the town.
- Peter (10/5): - Very nice breakfast.
Staff helpful with maps.
- Linda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Johannes (6/5): Pleasant -
- Lorna (9/5): Superb - Lovely location and venue. Clean, cosy, and comfortable. A lovely breakfast provided. Everything was great.
- Titterton (10/5): Outstanding and can't wait to return!!! - Thank you for the most amazing mini getaway!! Everything was absolutely exquisite, and the bed was heavenly!!!! The chef, Blom, went over and above every morning to spoil us with a mouth watering breakfast, we feasted like royalty! Our room was spotless and looked after by the lovely Maria. Staff were so helpful and friendly, and nothing was too much for them. We loved getting to know the two little pugs too :) Also wanted to add that the entire guesthouse was filled with the most amazing fragrance, and their attention to detail was spectacular.
- Paul (10/5): Very, very classy and inspired property with excellent service and facilities. Would definitely stay - The room was spacious and well kitted out. Water was hot, sheets were crisp and the bed was very comfortable.
The situation and the gardens and layout of the property was very classy.
We had a full breakfast with cereal and muesli to start and a cooked breakfast, cooked by the lady. The weather. It would have been lovely to sit in the garden, but there was a very spacious lounge area inside.
- Crystal (8/5): Pleasant accommodating and calm. - The design the pool and the rooms are quite spaces Nothing it was good.
- Branson (6/5): It was an okay stay, nothing special.alterations were also being done - The complementary sherry and the comfortable bed. No place to sit in the sun. Gave the room we booked to another couple. Paying was an issue and not done through booking.com and she made us pay before we left and made it unpleasant. Never had to pay through booking.com like this before.
- Thaisa (10/5): Exceptional - Had a wonderful stay at the Calais GH. Ane and her team were very attentive and made us feel very welcomed. The room was spacious and well equipped. I will definitely be back!
- Taryn (9/5): Superb -
- Christian (10/5): High class guesthouse with excellent service - An excellent guesthouse with beautiful rooms, great staff and great breakfast. Eye for detail and consistent high quality. Perfect location for roaming Franschhoek and walking distance to the main streets.
- Barbara (10/5): Lovely surroundings in a good location with very comfortable accommodations and beautiful artwork. - Beautiful setting, nicely appointed with comfortable beds and linens. The pool was right outside our room, which made it convenient for an afternoon swim to cool off. The hosts were pleasant and offered many suggestions for our stay in the area. The breakfast was cooked to order and served on a beautiful veranda.
- Phil (9/5): Stylish hotel in a peaceful location - Very stylish property with lovely views from the lounge.
Good breakfast made to order. Safe and quiet location.
Comfortable bed and nice looking pool to sit around or use. Slight trek back from the centre but no problem walking down to it. We ended up getting a cheap uber back at the end of each evening.
The open plan room lacked privacy and would be a challenge for couples who are less familiar with each other.
- Danielle (10/5): More than perfect - Everything we needed and wanted!
- Wayne (10/5): Exceptional - This was a fab and well recommended place to stay in the village, everything was perfect, comfortable and friendly. I’ve seen a few people say how wonderful the breakfasts were…………….we’d agree 100%!
- Michael (10/5): Incredible stay in an elegant home - The house is magnificent and has incredible tasteful design in every detail. The staff is very helpful, friendly and we really enjoyed the breakfast on the terrace. You can easily do a 10-15 Minute walk to center of the town or just take an Uber.
- Tucker (9/5): Large and comfortable room, close to the main street - We had the large loft room at the top of the house, which was fabulous. Location of property is 15 min walk from centre so nice and quiet and pleasant outside space. Overall lovely stay but breakfast times were limited, being 9-10 only.
- Jeffry (10/5): Wonderful stay and Ané was very helpful! -
- Sue (9/5): We stayed here for 3 nights. It’s a great base to explore Franschoek. The house team are wonderful so kind and welcoming - Amazing space, fixtures and touches. Great rooms, high quality and very very comfortable
- Gillian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shona (10/5): My husband and I wanted a 2 night breakaway in Franschoek and this Guesthouse offered the relaxed atmosphere we were loo - Tranquility and spotless pool
Breakfast was excellent NA
- Lauren (9/5): Beautiful homey getaway - Beautiful, big, comfortable bed. Delicious breakfast. Quiet surrounds. Stunning location. Nothing
- Emer (7/5): Good - Lovely place , very clean rooms , good location in walking distance to town Water pressure is shower is very very weak and in the morning barely possible to take a shower.
Bit awkward staying in someone’s house , I didn’t realize this would be the case on booking .
A separate entrance to guest rooms would be appreciated
- Michelle (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kim (9/5): We had a lovely stay at Calais guest house -
- Mae-lee (8/5): The two night stay was lovely. Service was good and breakfast was delicious! - Ané and the team are so welcoming and accommodating! Breakfast was delicious and freshly prepared! The location allows for a lovely view of Franschhoek in the morning and is a relatively close walk to town. NA
- Adrienne (10/5): The best facilities and location - Ane and Carlos were very welcoming and friendly. There was everything we could need in our lovely room opening on to the pool. Exceptionally clean and stylish we enjoyed the breakfasts and the closeness to many restaurants and other facilities. A great base from which to explore such a great area. We would definitely recommend and return. -
- Cherry (9/5): comfortable quiet, nice pool, good Food and nice facilities - Quiet, comfortable, loved the pool and facilities
- Alexey (10/5): Exceptional -
- Njabulo (9/5): Superb -
- Kalnisha (7/5): Good - Location was central and rooms are modern, very spacious and well furnished. I let the accommodation know one guest was vegan when I made my booking. At breakfast the lady working in the kitchen said nobody had informed her. I received 4 cocktail tomatoes and what must have been two mushrooms - I was not even offered extra portion sizes which I was disappointed by. You should expect better than a meal of omission rather than accommodation to suit dietary requirements.
- Ettienne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tema (8/5): Very good -
- Johan (10/5): Very enjoyable - Excellent guests
Very nice room and bed and bathroom (bath with bath foam and shower!) and small kitchen.
Accessible location in neighborhood, private with beautiful view.
- Danielle (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was good We liked everything
- Clive (9/5): Superb - hospitality, breakfast and views of mountains were of a high standard, the rooms were pleasant and an electric blanket was a welcome extra, that was essential in the severe and cold weather. parking was a little far from the room and without cover, and the Television programmed options were limited.
- Valentine (10/5): A well worth stay. - The guest house is well appointed and spotlessly clean. The room had a choice of shower or bath tub with toiletries including foam and bath salts. The furniture throughout is exceptional with gallery pieces. Breakfast was an elaborate affair with fruits, yogurt and granola followed by a hearty warm breakfast . There was a leak in the bathroom after a heavy downpour. Hope the owners pick that up.
- Nadia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rukaiya (9/5): Superb - Everything Nothing
- Thenjiwe (10/5): The hosts and staff were amazing, really enjoyed our stay and we’ll definitely come back in the future. - It’s a Beautiful property in a perfect location with an amazing view Everything was perfect
- Peter (10/5): Four nights felt like two weeks. Fabulous. - It was beautiful.
Room decor was delicious and beautifully considered. I loved the massive windows with easy flowing high quality easy flowing muslin nets and drapes. Plenty of cupboard space.
My hosts were charming , relaxed and super helpful.
The bed was beyond comfortable. The ambience was serene. The shower was hot and powerful. The towels were crisp and fresh. The toiletries were luxurious. The balcony was natural, quiet and super comfortable. The pop popping of the frogs in the stream down below and the occasional raucous crowing of the four or five occasionaly visiting Ibis ( I think) was enchanting.
Breakfasts every morning included a fabulous choice of fresh fruit, yoghurts, breads and cereals with piping hot coffee and a really tasty cooked breakfast to follow. The mini sausages were heavenly.
My room was made up daily by very pleasant and friendly ladies who also cooked breakfast. N/A
- Chris (10/5): perfect spot for everything. hosts could not have been more accommodating. love the pugs! - outstanding hosts
- Comfort (10/5): Birthday celebration in Franschhoek - The place was romantic 😍 Bathroom had bath salts and candles for those relaxing moments in the evening. Nothing!
- Kelvin (8/5): Very good - Spent minimal time there. Basically only slept there. Room and location cannot be faulted. There was no back up power during load shedding and the aircon could not be used. The temperature was over 35 Deg C in the day and the room was very hot during the the 2 load shedding slots.
- Anselm (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elizabeth (10/5): Fantastic stay in Calais Guesthouse. Kind and welcoming host & hostess, the house is stunning, and the accommodation -
- Thomas (10/5): A Franschhoek gem! - An amazing stay at Calais Guest House. A beautiful property with great service, and in a brilliant location. Our rooms were spotlessly clean, both overlooking the swimming pool. Faultless from start to finish. 🍷
- Gillian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lorna (10/5): Not to be missed when in Franschhoek - This place is a real find, it’s tucked away in a quiet location, amazing views but only a short walk into town.
This home is beautifully appointed and the hosts are so welcoming and generous.
The room was very spacious and comfortable, nice extra touches that made you feel home from home. The pool and terrace is a lovely place to relax.
Breakfast was amazing, nothing was too much trouble. You’ll be really well looked after if you stay here.
- Achim (9/5): Great place to stay at Franschhoek - The Calais Guesthouse is a great spot to stay at Franschhoek. The guesthouse is equipped with lots of elegant pictures and other art things. Breakfast is very good and served by the most friendly staff. Ané and Carlos who run the place are the most lovely and helpful people. If we come to Franschhoek again, this is the place to stay.
- Noxolo (7/5): Pleasant break from the city - The host was amazing and so was Gina. She took very good care of us and ensured we enjoyed our stay. I think my highlight was when she checked in on us after an early check out due to unforeseen circumstances. Would definitely visit again No UPS during loadshedding.
- Sakhiwo (8/5): Very good -
- Matshe (9/5): Vonderlik! - Clean, beautiful, views, location, stuff and owners Nothing much except labeling the house number for ease of finding.
- Anonymous (9/5): Stunning house in a fab location. About a 15 min walk into town but it was worth it for the spectacular views from our r - Loved the location and the view. Our hosts Ane and Carlos were great and always there to help out when needed. Very friendly staff and a big shout out for Gina greeting us with her friendly smiley face and providing a lovely breakfast for us. Room was lovely with great views towards the mountains and looking down on Franschhoek. The load shedding was a bit of an issue as it was off from about 8.00pm to 6.00am everyday.
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional -
