- Carlos (4/5): Overall disappointing and not value for money - Location We were surprised by major construction works ongoing during our stay. Nothing was indicated neither on the platform nor on the website prior to our reservation. On our first day the property gave two hours notice of a water cut that was planned for a few hours. Later they informed the water cut was rescheduled to the next day. WiFi never worked during our stay until late in the evening of our last day. The property advertises the accommodation has hair dryer and mini fridge but the cottage did not have either.

- Sherri (6/5): - Location, history of property, staff and owners were engaging and have great ideas to expand their property into more health based location. It was great to experience a home with history decorated for the holidays. Food choices did not meet pricing for dinner. Due to a travel companion with mobility issues we were away from the main house and there was no designated handicap parking to find at the main house for dinner. The owners state they are just taking over the property and plan on updates which sound good.

- Katie (4/5): - The staff was friendly and accomdating to our late check in and made sure that we were able to check in after were were delayed with traffic. The views were beautiful, as touted. You can see the beautiful mountains from the back lawn and there are many comfy chairs. Our 4 rating is for the quality of the staff that we had chatted with prior to our arrival, but given the cons, we are not able to say much else postive as we didn't end up staying. We actually did not end up staying the night. The property itself felt a bit run down and not quite as pictured, but the main issue for us was something much deeper. We wish we had known more about the history of the “romantic cottage” before arriving. The building that our room, Rapidan, was in had been converted from former slave quarters. The energy felt extremely heavy for us, and had this been disclosed on the listing or website, we would not have booked. While some guests may feel differently, this context is important to share so that future guests can make an informed decision.
- Pablo (7/5): Good experience and if we return we'll book a different room. - The Summer Kitchen room is a separate two story building connected to the main house. It is full of period furniture, old books, fireplaces. Dinner in the patio off the main house was wonderful. Very talented chef. Good local wines. Breakfast was also very good. Terrific service. The bed is an 18th century style bed three feet high but no step stools to get into it. Quite a maneuver to get into bed. Bathroom is in need of some fixing. The sink doesn't have a stopper; the toilet seat is loose and the bowl had rust stains; the shower needs cleaning of the water ducts. Perhaps the change in seasons brought in swarms of flies and the property is now aware that it needs to control this.

- Carol (10/5): - I loved that we got to stay in a whole colonial, well-appointed, immaculate house by ourselves. I loved the staff, that went out of its way. The grounds are beautiful, as are the accommodations. I didn't like my breakfast, a "sandwich" made from a croissant, some flavorless cheese, a fried egg and overcooked, very salty bacon. No garnishes. Croissant was second-rate. Should have had tomato or greenery. Caused us to cancel our dinner reservation. Other than that, the staff was amazing, as were the grounds and the accommodations.
- Greta (9/5): Great hotel! - Loved this hotel, the room we stayed in was so charming, and the property is gorgeous, we did the loop around the hotel and it was an extremely pleasant walk. The staff is amazing we had dinner at the restaurant and couldn’t recommend it more
- Lisa (6/5): - Cottage smelled horrible, damp and moldy. Spoke to the young lady about it but she basically threw up her arms. We left and went the store to buy a Febreeze defuser. Half of the plugs didn't work so we had to move furniture to get to a working outlet. There was a mouse trap behind the nightstand. The shower floor appeared moldy both inside and out.The property was beautiful but rundown. The young man who served us breakfast was wonderful. Parker engaged everyone and was kind and professional. In fact he was the only person working there who spoke to us the entire time other than the young lady who checked us in. Our last evening there we were watching the sunset, however, there was a great deal of shooting going on somewhere near the property. While I realize there's no control over another property, it did definitely damaged our calm. Overall I could not recommend this place.
- Jeffrey (7/5): Nice quiet place in the country near historic little towns and Shenandoah National Park. - We were looking for a quiet getaway in the country, and this place was certainly that. The room was very comfortable (though no TV, which for us wasn't a problem). The grounds were fun to walk in the morning. Breakfast was good (the egg sandwhich on croissant was better than the farmer's breakfast), and the coffee was great. I also liked that they put out trail mix and water and chips for snacking. The location was really great for seeing many historic little towns and attractions and Shenandoah National Park, which was the best part. The water wasn't potable due to e-coli findings, so we had to use bottled water for brushing teeth and any drinking, which was a surprise. The facility was undergoing some much needed painting, so we had to walk around that. Towels were not replaced in the room after the first day, but I was able to get more on request. The tavern/dinner was only open days when we were not visiting (we stayed early in week), which totally caught me off guard.

- Paul (10/5): - Its a great quiet and serene place to escape to, less than 2 hours from DC. It happened to be dog friendly which was perfect for our needs. Many wineries and restaurants nearby. Onsite dining was excellent for dinner and breakfast.

We particularly enjoyed sitting on the patio and looking out at the view with the mountains, the excellent breakfast, the friendly staff, and the charming cottage room with a real antique feel in spite of the necessary bathroom addition and very comfortable bed.

There was a fireplace instead of a TV, which made for a quiet evening. Unfortunately, it was cloudy when we stayed, but the starry sky must have been beautiful. (We were fine, but perhaps some of you may be concerned about the water pressure in the showers.) During the day it was clear so we were able to explore the trails. It was beautiful as well. The food was very good and we were very satisfied. We would like to visit again in another season.

Dinner at the restaurant was equally as enjoyable. The hostess and Chef made it a wonderful experience and meal. A quiet getaway. We’ll go back.

- Connector723716 (2/5): Unfortunate experience - My wife and I had planned a romantic escape and decided on The Inn at Meander based on the photos and reviews only to find pictures do not always tell the truth nor does the Meander's web site. The approach to the facility was beautiful. Our excitement quickly evaporated as we walked towards the buildings. Much of the grounds are in desperate need of grooming. Walkways of brick were treacherous. The main house (built in the 1700's) looked like it had needed restoration. Attic level windows had glass panes missing. The lobby/grand room had peeling walls, water stains on ceiling, a large, patched hole in ceiling with paint peeling from it, a couch that looked like a cast off from the Goodwill store with a sofa cover on it. The reception desk is very small with veneer peeling off of it. The back yard of house you can see the fencing is broken, the small brick pool/fish pond had extremely green smelly water. Our cottage was not ready because there was a broken water line earlier in the week. Work was just being completed when we got there. The room looked nice when we entered only to find it was surface beauty. The air inside was very heavy and smelled musky. I had breathing issues within minutes of being in the room. The tile on the floor in the bathing area was missing a lot of grout. Dangerous for walking on with bare foot. The folding door to toilet was also missing hardware to keep it closed. The cottage, which was dog friendly, had some brown stuff ground into the carpet and some also hardened on the tile. Water stains were on the ceiling and walls had some damage. Opening the door to the back patio, the hole from the water work was still open and the area was overgrown. I spoke with the management immediately regarding our concerns and that we could not stay. They were understanding and did agree to refund our deposit. As frustrating as this experience was, I feel the property could be beautiful and a must stay destination. Unfortunately, it would need to be closed down for several months and a total renovation completed.

- Angela Rose (8/5): Charming get away - It is so cute. We stayed in the Rapidan. It was lovely but the bathroom could use some updating. The exterior needs help which is sad because it is both historical and charming. Hopefully they will get an investor to help and make it into a wedding venue to bring in additional money. The staff is beyond helpful and nice. We would stay there again.

It’s a separate two-story building with two fireplaces, offering a cozy and charming atmosphere. The charcuterie plate I ordered was fantastic and made for a special birthday surprise. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed. I highly recommend this bed and breakfast for a romantic getaway!

The Shearer Suite was very cozy and comfortable. All of the staff were professional and very friendly. It felt like we were visiting in a home, not a hotel. We will definitely plan another visit when we are in the area.

- Linda (10/5): Surprising find in rolling Virgina hills - What a great surprise. Found this by browsing for accommodations while passing through the area. It’s a beautiful, historic Inn with excellent breakfast included. A fine dining restaurant is available in the evening. We stayed in one of the 8 cottages surrounding the main house. Property is beautiful with hiking trails and even a historic cemetery. Staff was friendly and accommodated requests. Highly recommend! We will go out of our way to return in the futur.
- kdh78 (8/5): Charming, historic inn - Beautiful, historic property with lovely views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Charming rooms with fireplaces and we were able to use the public areas in the evening, which were lovely. Had a balcony off our room with gorgeous views. Close to Montpelier (home of James and Dolley Madison), which is why we chose this property. Also a short drive to Orange, Va. The only down side was breakfast was only offered at 8:30 a.m. and we had to leave at that time as we had tour tickets to Monticello, and so missed breakfast. Would have been nice if there were 2 breakfast times offered such as 7:30 a.m. for people with early departures as well as the 8:30 a.m. breakfast. At the very least, a Continental breakfast could be offered for the early guests. Also, I might mention that guests staying during the early part of the week should know they would have to drive into town for dinner as the restaurant is not open the earlier part of the week. This did not present too much of a problem for us. The staff was friendly and we were made to feel welcome. It was a treat to stay in such a lovely, historical home and would love to visit again.

The breakfast served at the dining room in the main house was excellent with several selections to choose from. The staff were warm, friendly, and very helpful. We'd definitely consider coming back again in the future.

- Okaaay (10/5): A Peaceful Countryside Visit in an Historic Home... - This gem of an historic property gave the two of us a wonderful anniversary getaway! The summer kitchen with its gas fireplace downstairs & its wood-burning fireplace upstairs, the soaking tub, the huge and comfortable bed, wooden floors with period square nails and lovely vistas from the windows created the perfect ambience of a peaceful time in the country. We enjoyed a truly first-class breakfast in terms of selection, taste and presentation. The sunset over the inn proved spectacular, as well. Keep in mind that this is not a new property meant to look old. As a pre-Revolutionary home, it's a step back in time, holding a unique charm and personality ready to win the hearts of discerning guests.

- 858wayner (2/5): Website pictures and descriptions are very deceiving. - Went for wedding anniversary. Stayed in the Lightfoot Room in the Manor House. The location and setting are beautiful, the history of the place in enchanting, its clean, the breakfast was excellent, and Gen. Mgr. Daniel was very friendly and accommodating. However, the pictures and descriptions on the website are very deceiving. The manor house and grounds are badly in need of maintenance and renovation. The common rooms, with the exception of the dining room, are stark, and uninviting: devoid of any quality furnishings or decoration.The overall appearance is run down. Our room had a very noisy window A/C unit that recycled every 2 minutes (20 secs on, 2 mins off......) that made sleep nearly impossible. The chairs in the room were old and worn, the cushions flat, and the bathroom very inconvenient and in need of renovation, We had booked 3 nights, but stayed only one as we could not face another night without sleep. WE explained our concerns to GM Daniel, and he listened politely and apologize for the problems, but offered no real consolation. We paid in advance over $600 for the 3 nights and were give only a partial refund of $78. Very disappointed in our experience.

- huckleberries (6/5): Takes you immediately back in time- but not far enough- need serious repairs. - Husband's birthday kidnapping for a 1-night getaway. We stayed in the Groom's Cottage which at one time used for the horse groomers to live. Charming, private, and oddest place I've ever visited. Nice bed and bedding but absolutely no place to sit except the nasty, old hide-a-bed sofa left from the 80s complete with creepy, decorator pillows full of holes. We went outside and grabbed 2 rusted-out chairs from the patio and brought them in to use, sweltering outside. Wouldn't sit out anyway, the total area hadn't been maintained in years- overgrown, uneven open spaces and walkways and bushes and trees untrimmed for years. In honesty, the whole place hasn't been maintained in quite a while, falling apart and neglected. Slept well with little AC maintaining temperature however the rattle of plumbing in the middle of the night would speak of something living there besides us. Closed sink and tub traps, shut the bath door, and went back to sleep. We did not eat dinner here the night we stayed, the restaurant was not open. Didn't do breakfast either, a bit late for us, so I can't comment on any of the food or service. Probably would not stay here again- just my opinion.

- 981williama (10/5): A Most-Pleasant, Comfortable and Memorable Stay Hearkening Back to Colonial Times - Everything about our stay at the Inn and Tavern at Meander was delightful! It's a beautiful colonial era estate that preserves a welcoming, authentic and comfortable sense of the times. Everyone on staff was a pleasure to be with and and Sunday Supper on the porch of the Inn was delicious.. Our suite was large and well decorated. We enjoyed just being in the manor house and walking the grounds. The General Manager, Mr. Daniel Bushey, went out of his way to make our visit memorable.

The dining room waitress, and it was not a very busy dining room, was very single task oriented and not alert to customer needs. For example, she brought out coffee in a pot to pour for another table but did not look over to ours to see if we would like coffee. She could use some pointers on how to wait tables. There were only four of us in the dining room, so from an old waiter and bartender, she coulld have read the room better.

Learning about the history of the home from Daniel was a delight. Dinner and breakfast at the on property restaurant were both so incredibly delicious!

Common areas gorgeous. And the grounds are immense and varied, from a river to rolling, grassy hills. The history of the property was interesting, as well. And for the relatively low cost, loved it! We missed out on the variety of breakfast options on the first day due to a mechanical issue with their fridge. But all wasn't lost. They had some good stuff available and scrambled to get eggs to the BnB early, as well. Sometimes things don't go perfectly. How they handle things when they didn't made a great impression.

We were given a brief tour of the main mansion upon check-in and some history about the home and the area. The room was clean and cozy. The bed was very comfortable. We stayed in the Lightfoot Suite.

- melissasX1237BQ (10/5): Charming Inn that is changing - We did a 2 night get-away from DC to the Meander. Our first time there - but definitely not our last. Currently the Inn is very rustic - with all the charm (& some hiccups) that comes along with a house built in the 1700s. However, the cottages are modern, updated and spacious - many with fireplaces and private patios. Dinner was a delight - a wonderful pre fixe menu with plenty of options. All four of us loved our meal with nice selection of wines from the local wineries. As good as dinner was - breakfast was even better. Sitting out on the porch, overlooking the Blue Ridge Mts with a steaming cup of coffee and gourmet breakfast options - a lazy, lingering morning - yep. But even better than that is the staff - Daniel and Chandra are always there ready to answer any questions, give suggestions or help with any issues. Within an hour, you feel as if you've known them for years. They are the true heart and soul of this Inn. We cant wait to go back and see all the changes planned. What a gem of a place in the country.

- Leslie (10/5): - I love the history behind this property. It's very quiet and peaceful, due to its setting on a beautiful 80 plus acres and its distance from the main road. Staff was very friendly and enjoyable to be around. The breakfast in the morning was very good and set the tone for the rest of the day. Only a few negatives, and both small. 1) every time we got toast, it was always hard, dry and cold. 2) In our room, only had one very small waste basket. I think of one thing that could elevate the hospitality experience, since they have a kitchen available, is to have a little cheese and cracker spread with some local wines. This would give the guests an opportunity to mingle and get to know one another. I would not hesitate coming back here, and enjoyed our stay.
