Guest Reviews
- Roel (10/5): - Less expensive and budget friendly. Amenities available like Onsen and table tennis. Laudry is also available. Distance is the disadvantage. It's a little far from the city center although still walking distance.
- James Glenn (8/5): - This large and rambling hotel is on a wooded mountain slope near the Happo-One gondola and quite far from Hakuba Station. It is one of only a few hotels operating during the off-season (late June) and would be bustling with winter sports enthusiasts during the ski season. My visit was quiet and relaxing.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Teresa (10/5): - Stayed here in Spring, which I suspect is a whole different ballgame to Winter. Location was great as we did not have a car. As others note it’s a steep hill to walk up but it’s not long. With many restaurants closed at this time of year having breakfast onsite and the option of buffet dinner at the restaurant was brilliant. The hot baths were great too. The rooms themselves were a little tired and basic however the beds were comfortable and the property was quiet. We did hire a car for 24 hours to get to see the snow monkeys (recommendation for
- Philip (10/5): - Great place to stay
- Kathleen (10/5): - Unique property and a cozy alpine feel

- Yvonne (8/5): - This is a nice budget hotel. The hotel is a bit outdated, but the room is clean and spacious. Hotel staff are nice and helpful, fluent in English. Good facilities - big lockers for skis/boots, big common area, indoor/outdoor onsen. It is up on the hilly slope. That's the only drawback, but it can still consider as that it is located at a convienent location in Happo One. We were happy to be able to book a room there at last minute (before it is sold out!) - to attend the Happo One Fire Festival.
- Susan (10/5): - Third time here - staff fantastic and in a great location!
- Allie (10/5): - Super convenient and wonderful staffs.
- Nathan (10/5): - Great property, lovely staff and close to Happo one lifts. Would stay again
- Reyn (8/5): - Easy access to lift
- Uzair (10/5): Good bang for the buck! - Extremely comfortable hotel, very friendly for skiers with free heated storage for boots and gloves, nice heated common areas, excellent breakfast, decent indoor/outdoor baths. And not too expensive. Highly recommended
- Glenn (4/5): - The property is near the top of the hill with limited road service. It’s a 10 min walk down to the strip and Gondola area. If it’s snowing you will not be able to get a taxi, and there is no Uber in the area. The hotel does not provide a shuttle service or is not part of the Hakuba ski shuttle. There were other issues such as an embarrassing breakfast buffet. The selection was limited and the only thing we could eat was the tiny croissant and miso soup. Even though it was free we ended up walking down to a cafe on the strip. The rooms were kept clean but very dated including the beddings and sheets. The walls of course were quite thin so one night there was someone singing karaoke and on the other side a family with kids banging thins around. The staff were pleasant enough and the ladies at the front desk were helpful but the lack of transportation was the biggest drawback. We had to walk at night to restaurants because taxis couldn’t get there and when we checked out we again couldn’t get transportation to the bus station. We had to load up and walk down to the strip in snowy conditions and from there we got a taxi.
- Kevin (10/5): - Very close to the side lift which made it very convenient. Still close enough to the main lift for purchasing ski passes and where the rentals are. Facilities are old but not bad. Onsen was clean but the outdoor area is a bit small (if there are more than 3 people). Parking is tight but available if you can get your car up the small hill and the counter can help you reserve a taxi which is super helpful. The receptionists all had good English too.
- Koshu (10/5): -
- Isaac (8/5): - It's at the hill top, having to drag your luggage would be a difficult task. Likewise for the ski and snowboard. Will have to hike up just to get back to the accoms. Just a poor location other then this, all is pretty decent.
- Tomonori (10/5): -
- Peter (10/5): - Heel rustig gelegen.
- Rei (8/5): - The interior and facilities have a retro charm, but they are well-maintained and clean, so there's no issue. However, the parking lot is adjacent to the building, which made it feel a bit noisy at times.
- Harrison (8/5): - Friendly staff
- William (10/5): - Hotel was situated very close to Happo one, though it was a little bit of an uphill slope going back. Rooms were clean and surprisingly spacious.
- Cary (8/5): - Basic standard room. Good hot bath. Snack shop, whole place very old school. Building from 70’s my guess. Well kept up, easy storage for skiing stuff
- Chi Ho Tony (8/5): - The room is small and old. Renovation is required. The price included two meal and all you can drink alcohol. Public bath is open aired. Overall, value for money choice.
- Chi Ho Tony (8/5): - Value for money stay with bkf n dinner and all you can drink. Close to Happo liftchair but the room is a bit old
- EMILY YAN YAN (6/5): - Breakfast has not changed over the 5 days of our staying
- EMILY YAN YAN (8/5): - Breakfast has no changed for all 5 days of our staying.
- EMILY YAN YAN (8/5): - Breakfast has not changed over the 5 days of our staying
- EMILY YAN YAN (8/5): - Close to ski station
- James Crawford (10/5): - ,
- Alex (10/5): - Great place to stay for the family in Hakuba for our ski trip, would definitely recommend.
- Craig (10/5): - Great ski field access
- Hitoshi (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- CHENG WEI (10/5): - It was my 1st time in Japan hakuba skiing ! Miki and other staff was super helpful and show great hospitality , love the simple room nothing fancy . The outdoor hot spring was great and buffet style breakfast and dinner ! However, there no shuttles service so either you take taxi from happo terminal bus stop or walk 20min up hill..
It 5min walk down hill to Happo one which is great , but everytime you go back hotel you will have to hike back up again so just a heads up..
- Danny (10/5): - Great location with very close (short walk) access to lifts and Adam Gondola. The staff were fantastic- so helpful and obliging. Would highly recommend staying here!
- James (10/5): - We had an excellent stay Staff couldn’t be more eager to help you out. Great position for skiers. good boot drying room and lockers for storing of skis. Excellent breakfast and dinner with free alcohol. We really enjoyed our stay.
- Adeel (10/5): - Believe it or not, I liked the name so much that it was the first reason to book this place. The breakfast hall was a bit away from the front desk but I liked that I could park so close to the hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great hotel with very friendly staff. However, the nearby skiing field entrance was closed. This has caused a bit of troubles to going to the skiing field from the hotel
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great hotel with very friendly staff. Great dinner. Close to skiing field entrance. However, the skiing field has decided NOT to close that entrance gate, which causes a bit of troubles to enter the skiing field
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Located in a far uphill area with large carpark. Staff service quality varies from person to person. I had need for urgent matter and Ayano and Matsuda gave me execellent help than a 5 star concerige could have done.
Better comminication is needed especially with from the hotel and senior staff in addressing needs usually required by travellers. No water boiler no larger hair blowers, just simply make it loud upfront. The hotel has aged and the carpet floor is filthy and toilet stinky.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Place to Stay! - We were in Hakuba for two nights and we loved staying at Hotel Paipu No Kemuri! In addition to being a five minute walk from the closest ski lift, the hotel also offered a small discount on lift tickets and rental pick up services.
We would also highly recommend the breakfast and dinner - it was super convenient and a great value.
Great overall experience, would stay here again!
- YY (8/5): - Very close to skiing field. But if the nearby entrance chairlift is not open, then this would be quite a walk to the main entrance
- andysC1100XQ (6/5): Charmless, basic and dated - but some decent facilities - As the title suggests this place is not going to win any awards for stylish and modern accomodation. Not particularly good value either. But there is a wood fireplace in reception, a small shop, spa baths with complementary gowns, razors and cotton buds, a drying room, lockers and pretty much everything else you could need.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Close to the skiing field. However, the skiing field has NOT opened the nearby chairlifts and no pressing of the snows on the path. Make it hard to access the skiing field everyday from this hotel
- Theresa (6/5): Good for the price we paid - Surprised the dinner buffet comes with all you can drink alcohol. Food was decent for the price. Just know that you have to be on-time for dinner or else they clear out at the time they mentioned. Rooms are old but decent size.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Close to ski fields. Staff are very friendly and helpful
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great Value for money property though quite a distance away from Happo Bus Terminal
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very good hotel. Location is a bit far out and the meal serving is average. But the staff are very very friendly
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Rooms were a bit dated, but staff and location were top notch... ski lift is a very short distance away
Terrible service. No support when something trouble happened. They did not help at all. I will never stay this hotel again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Great location if skiing at Happo-one but bit of a walk up hill from shuttle bus with ski boots if returning from a different ski resort. Breakfast and dinner great and excellent value for money. Outside onsen was nice after day skiing. Unfortunately no room service on a 7 night stay however we also didn’t ask. Great place to stay overall and excellent value for money.
- Nadia (10/5): Great location - Fantastic location. The buffet breakfast and dinner options made it for a very convenient stay.
- Wayne (10/5): Great location close to ski school. Buffet dinner - We really enjoyed staying here. Having the buffet breakfast and dinner made life very easy. Didn't have to worry about where to find dinner as it is a little way away from restaurants. Agree with what others have said that the breakfast can get a little same same after a few days. Not a great deal to choose from for western palettes but it is enough to get the day started. Dinners are decent with free beer, wine, sake and our favourite, a Scotch and soda mix. Very close to the Evergreen ski school.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Close to snow field. Room is good. Very good onsen. Breakfast is just ok. Dinner is very very good. Great Value for money
- Jess (10/5): - This hotel was an absolute treat. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly, going above and beyond all expectations. The room was warm, comfortable and clean. The shower had surprisingly the best water pressure I've had on our entire trip - super powerful! They also have an onsen/spa inside the hotel. The hotel was also very close to the Adams gondola (main gondola) to Happo-one ski slopes in Hakuba, and right across the road from one of the chairlifts on the slopes such that you could ski right infront of the hotel. All in all, highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay again next time we're in Hakuba. Thanks so much for everything!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Fantastic hotel in a great location with quite a few chairlifts & gondola close by. The staff were very friendly and spoke fairly good English. A great variety of dishes were served at brekky & dinner
- Nelson (8/5): Good price, good location, decent hotel - The hotel is a simple no frills hotel but for that price you really cannot complain. The front counter staff were really friendly and helpful with our queries and gave good suggestions on which ski slopes to go for. The room was decent but the beds were not very comfortable.Everything was clean and tidy though. Toilet was small but all the toiletries were provided and sufficient. Tried the hot spa and enjoyed it. Though the front counter staff made it clear to us that it is a spa and not an onsen. Couldn't tell the difference anyway. The location of the hotel is good in that it is very close to the gondola and another ski chair lifts. However there is a slope down from the hotel to the gondola. May not be easy to walk up and down that slope with the ski boots on. The breakfast and dinner were ok, for our family. Be aware of the closing times of the breakfast. Woke up late on our first day there and missed breakfast altogether.
- Chee Huei (8/5): Good value hotel - A very basic hotel with good location for skiing activities.
- Staceylee123 (8/5): Great location - A great place to stay close to the lifts for Happo-One or for the bus to Hakuba47. Staff speak limited English, but definitely enough to get by. The breakfast is good, the onsen is nice.
Little walk back up the hill from the town/bus stop (Happo), or you can easily go right out to Evergreen etc the other way for more restaurants etc.
- gemma212018 (8/5): Perfect Spot - Enjoyed our stay here due to the location-50m walk to the slopes. Room was basic but clean. Our bin and towels weren't changed at all but we also didn't ask. Rooms don't have wifi but there's a fire and heaters in the lobby with comfy couches which was great to relax. Staff were friendly but spoke limited english. They have a drying room for gear and lockers for boards. We loved the dinner only about 12 dollars with all you can eat including an ice cream machine and all you can drink beers and chuhai's. The breakfast was traditional Japanese but also had fruit, crossiants and nutella pastries. Would stay here again.
- Canuck20yearsabroad (6/5): Budget hotel but good location near slopes - Our family room was a row of 4 single beds in a long narrow room, and each bed had a small chair facing it. You step up into a small modular type bathroom. There is also a small closet near the door. So, it's functional but not much else. Fortunately, for all your bulky ski equipment and clothing there is a ski room, locker room, drying room, and a small laundry area.
Onsen was nice and my daughter and I used it every night.
You get one towel for the week unless you know to ask for another one. No one came in our room all week to clean or empty the garbage. Not sure if you're able to request that? Since the room is small with no sitting area and no wifi, we spent most of our time in the spacious and light lobby area reading, playing games we'd brought or using internet.
The hotel feels like it hasn't been touched since the 70s, with brown carpeted walls and stairs. Very basic. My kids didn't love the local breakfast. We mostly just ate the yoghurt, fruit and mini croissants. Not fancy, but certainly functional. People at the desk and in the restaurant spoke limited English but were pleasant and helpful. (It's our fault for not speaking any Japanese!) Easy walking distance to the gondola and a chairlift (5 min). Free parking!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very good.
Close to the chairlift.
No complaints at all.
- rileyjackson90 (10/5): Excellent hotel - First time staying at hotel paipunokemuri and loved it. Great location only a 50m walk to the closest chair lift on happo one located one the same slope as the main gondola. Breakfast is traditional Japanese style. Dinner buffet of only ¥1080 is amazing all you can eat and drink (beer, wine, sake sho chu). Only downer there’s no wifi in the rooms but the lobby has plenty of space with ample seating and heaters/fireplace. Highly recommended.
- Rattanaporn (10/5): Good place - Very good price with good location. Nice place to stay and convenient.
- John (8/5): Nice hotel close to mountain - We had a great experience, the hotel was right next to the mountain, which made it easy to start the day on the slopes. Also came with discount deals at one of the rental shops. The room was small but comfortably fit two, and didn't matter since we spent all day and night out. The staff was incredibly friendly. Also the hotel had an Onsen (hot spring) which was incredibly relaxing after a day on the slopes. And the location was within walking distance of restaurants, bars and the Happo One bus stop.
- MichaelO4755 (8/5): Bare bones, but functional - - Room has two decent twin beds and space for two people.
- It was always somewhat chill in the bathroom.
- Close to the slopes.
- A bit far from the happo one bus station, but still walkable.
- Had an included good breakfast buffet at 6:30 AM. Recommended.
- Purchased a dinner buffet too, price was reasonable (about 10$USD), good value for the food options plus unlimited beer, wines and hot sake.
- Did not get a chance to try the onsen, it did not look too exciting either.
Overall - not too cozy, outdated and used up, BUT not dirty, functional and reasonable. Some staff was friendly and helpful, but some stuff was also somewhat mean and ignorant.
I would consider it for another stay if the price stays the same.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great hotel with Onsen and good value dinner - Buffet with wine / beer / sake for ¥1080 can't be beaten for value. Sitting in the outside Onsen while it's snowing is so nice. It's at the top of a hill but you can drop straight off the piste near a car park to avoid walk.
- Marko (8/5): Solo ski trip - The best value for money for the snow enthusiasts in Hakuba. Short stroll (2 minutes) to ski lift, hotel sells discounted Happy One lift tickets and cheapest ski equipment hire around.Rooms and facilities are in reasonable condition, staff helpful and hot shared baths are surely a bonus to relax sore muscles after a day on the ski fields.Tasty breakfast, a mixture of cooked, continental and oriental food.
- mcgandhi (8/5): Brilliant budget hotel for skiing - This is an excellent budget hotel ideally located for skiing in Happo-one. Conveniently located across the road from the Shirakuba 2 chair lift from which you can access the rest of the slopes. Lockers are provided free of charge, there's a boot drying room, a work table and plenty of gas heaters in the lobby to warm up next to on comfy sofas. There's separate onsens for men and women to relieve those aches and pains and the usual vending machines at the usual prices in the lobby.
The beds aren't the most comfy (quite stiff) but are fine by Japanese standards. The en suite bathroom is very small but the water pressure in the shower is excellent! We stayed on the 4th floor and there was a bit of a weird brassica smell at times which was probably the only downside to this hotel.
On our first night we ventured out for food and accepted the high prices for little food in the restaurants as we rarely eat in hotels. However on the second night we ate in the hotel and we're glad we did. For ¥1080 (approx £7) there was an all you can eat & drink buffet. The food was really good and had something for everyone, and unlimited beer, wine and soft drinks was very much appreciated! So much so, we ate there for the rest of our stay! Breakfast was ¥580 and again was buffet style all you can eat and drink. A really good spread and miles better than eating a cup noodle in your room!
The staff were always helpful and friendly and the majority spoke good English. Overall I would thoroughly recommend staying here in Happo-one.
Overall we were extremely happy with the hotel, it's quiet, peaceful and comfortable. If you're looking for somewhere with good Apres-Ski then this probably isn't for you, unless you fancy the long steep climb back up from the town....
- James Delaney (10/5): Name is fun to say. - Name is fun to say, my friend and I decided to make a little rhyme of it. The staff were extremely helpful and went absolutely out of their way to assist with everything I required. My only complaint is the wifi is only available in the lobby and not the rooms.
- Michael and Zoe (8/5): Perfect location so close to the slopes - Good hotel in a great location. The rooms were comfortable and adequate size for the 2 of us. The breakfast was excellent with a good variety of both western and traditional. The onsen was also an excellent way to finish off each days boarding.
- KrysH (8/5): Great location, friendly staff, enjoyable stay - We enjoyed our stay here very much for a number of reasons. Firstly, the location. Walking distance to three ski lifts and the Evergreen ski school (brilliant for the kids) and close to the Happo Gondala shuttle bus stop. There is ample parking for those who choose to drive but you really don't need a car.
The onsite restaurant was good value for money and had a range of food for all tastes with free beer and wine included with dinner. There are a number of cafes within walking distance for variety and a fridge in the rooms and hot water. There is a small shop in reception with snacks, coffee and some fresh fruit.
An onsite onsen is very enjoyable as is the lobby with its heaters and log fire. There are lockers for skis and boots near the front entrance and slipper provided in the lobby. Skis and boots can be hired via front reception (although sizes are limited to fit Japanese size feet not larg Western feet) and discounted lift passes purchased.
The staff spoke varying degrees of English but we had no trouble communicating our needs. There were very friendly and helpful.
The beds tended to be on the firm side as is usual of most Japanese hotels.
- JLemur (8/5): Nothing flashy but it did the trick - We booked really late this season and were surprised to find a hotel so close to the lifts with availability. The location is great if you're to ignore the walk up the hill from the gondola. You'll probably hate that hill like we did by the end of the trip. Apart from that the location is excellent. You have two lifts quite close by, one up the hill and one down the hill. Both were closed early in our tour due to lack of snow but when we did Happo again we used the lift down the hill and skied back to that lift at the end of the day. Cuts out most of the hill that way. At night you can pop over to Wadano past the Roots Cafe. A top place if you're looking to hire gear from Rhythm who do premium snowboard and ski hire. The central Happo isn't too bad either and we would even walk to Echoland from here.
They say never to judge a book by it's cover. This one, judge away. It's looks Soviet from the outside and true to form it is modest throughout. The rooms are tight but in our experience that's quite the norm on the hills. My partner and I slept really well here even though we initially thought the beds were quite hard. The shower was great although quite a tight fit like other reviewers mentioned. We're not big people and I found myself tucking the shower curtain into the sink taphead so I had a bit of room. Things that will annoy you about the rooms; no wifi and a lack of power points. We stayed in the main building overlooking the car park and looking towards the hill so I can't comment on the rest of the hotel but wifi was only available at in the reception area, yet another reason to get a local SIM. As for the power points we only had two available to us so if you're like us and have multiple cameras, phones, portable batteries etc, you may want a power board.
The hotel has all the basic amenities as well. There are drying lockers and a drying rooms for boots also. There's a table for any last minute tuning to do before you hit the hill as well. As boards and skis are not to be taken into rooms this is really handy. The reception area is comfortable and every time we walked through there were people plugging away on their laptops so it's a top area for catching up on emails if you can't afford to completely unplug like us. There's also a lovely fire there and some snow-covered trees to look out to. It's not a bad place to quickly check if work hasn't burnt down. Pro tip, try the ice creams they have at reception that are essentially a brick of ice cream covered in ice cream cone. I ate way too many of those. Now, things that we didn't overly enjoy, the breakfast. Dinner wasn't too shabby but we only did breakfast once even though it was included with our stay. Luckily we didn't pay extra for it but if it's cheaper to go without then there are better options in town.
This was our first stay in Happo so we obviously have a much better feel for the town now. My partner and I agreed that we'd probably stay at the bottom of the hill close to the gondola or the bus terminal next time. Would we be upset if things were booked out and we had to stay at Hotel "Pipe Smoke"? Absolutely not. It was cost effective and had everything we needed plus the staff were awesome. Very very friendly and as we didn't speak much Japanese they were also very patient and willing to help. If this is on the cards, give it a go, we ended up loving it and I think as long as you deal with the hill, you will too.
- Patriciaychou (6/5): Ideal for winter sports fanatics looking for convenience & the necessities, not the luxuries! - I stayed at this hotel while accompanying my daughter on her school ski trip during the Chinese New Years break. It is located in close proxy to the ski slopes, just an easy stroll uphill less than a block away. Next to the lobby are lockers to store all of your gears safely without having to haul it around everywhere you go. As you make your entrance into the front glass sliding doors, large picture windows with scenic views of the snow and trees next to comfy sofas, a wood burning fireplace, and the scent of fresh brewed coffee 24/7 makes this hotel very welcoming and inviting to all guests. The front desk staff are friendly but spoke very little English except for a man wearing glasses called Sutori (?) who is forever patient in helping us make arrangements for our travels to Tokyo from Hakuba. The rooms are tidy and simple, equipped with TV, fridge, and an en-suite bathroom so tiny you feel as if you're traveling in a motorhome. If you're over 6 feet tall, I suggest you use the communal toilet down the hall which is spacious and has an automatic toilet seat cover found in most Japanese hotels. My family and I preferred to shower in the onsen, which is the Japanese public hot springs that's located on the premises especially relaxing after aching muscles from all day skiing. Yukatas (Japanese robes) and slippers are provided and there's even outdoor seating if you are not shy to be seen in your birthday suit among strangers, thankfully males and females are separated. The restaurant only serves a buffet breakfast and dinner which surprisingly was adequate and tasty, the chef tries to add or change a dish daily but our favorite is the croissants, roast beef, tamago, and soft serve ice cream made with fresh milk. A washer and dryer is available, add well as, a massage chair and computer station for an additional fee. Wifi is available for free only in the lounge area.
