Guest Reviews
- Nicholas (10/5): Charming pension with lovely hosts in a great location - We had a wonderful stay at this charming pension. The place is incredibly homely, with so many comforts including equipped kitchenette and front sitting room (with fireplace). The hosting family was very attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. Their hospitality truly made our experience special. Also a very convenient location for happo one, rhythm snowsports and some nice restaurants. Don't be caught out with showers (open 5pm-10pm daily).

- Carl (10/5): Home away from home. - This place has warm and welcoming vibes. Ito san kindly picked me up from the train station and his lovely wife didn't hesitate to help me by calling up the courier service when I found out my snowboard had been delayed with the delivery and wasn't sure when it would arrive. I really appreciated it.
- adam (9/5): Great choice for accom close to the Happo One slopes. Hosts are helpful, friendly and caring. - The hosts Ito san and Ikouo san are lovely people and very helpful. Their daughter , Makikio san was very helpful when she was there for the first few days. They all went out of there way with a few little hiccups we had on our trip, and this was greatly appreciated. Ito san has lived there for 50+ years and knows a lot of the history of Hakuba and is a great conversationalist ( better with a translator on your phone) and we ahd many hours of stimulating conversation. Thank you.
The Pension is what you would expect form a ski lodge. Rooms are sizable, the thermal bath is fantastic after a day on the slopes. The common area has a fire and big area to sit and chat or play games. There is a small kitchen area with microwave, kettle and toaster and fridge, so you can be a little self sufficient for food.
We organised to have a pick up from the train station and to and from the ski rental shop prior to arriving. All of this was no problem for the hosts.
The walk to Happo One ski lifts is about 500m ( reasonably flat), which means you don't necessarily have to rely on shuttle busses, unless you go to other ski fields.
There are close places to eat, with "The Pub" only 50-100m walk. Convenience shop is about 15min walk away (if you don't get lost in the dark).
Overall, a great place to stay in a ski lodge type accom. The hosts are helpful, friendly and caring about your stay. They have been doing this for 50+ years so they are definitely doing something right. Nothing

- Isabel (9/5): Cozy little room with all the essentials and we absolutely loved the little onsen. Slopes were a short walk away which w - The location was close proximity to the slopes, useful kitchenette, cute little onsen, good bed/floor heating Fair distance from Happo one bus terminal and Lawson’s - was unable to organise a lift to the accom
- Feng Yuan (10/5): exactly what we needed, felt like home - Azumi was just what we needed- a small, cosy lodge run by an elderly couple with such hospitality we were sad to leave. The old-school pension was small but so well designed you have everything you need- from the cosy , sun-filled living room with a real fireplace (and a cuckoo clock), to bedrooms with hooks and shelves for storage, to the spacious and effective drying room, and the heated bathrooms. Our children - ages 5,4 and 2, treated the pension as their own home.
Best of all was the hospitality of the elderly couple and their small team. They were genuinely helpful and friendly-and went out of their way to help, and the simple home-made breakfast ( with home made from real strawberries, pear and blueberries!) was a winner. The kids loved them and we miss them already.
Prices are very reasonable and the place is extremely conveniently located- just a 2-3 minutes walk from Rhythm ski rental, and barely a 5-7min walk from Evergreen Ski school ( i timed myself walking at a leisurely pace in the snow and took 5 min). There are also a few restaurants across the road.
After tons of corporate travel, coming to Starlight Azumi with my family reminded me how a small, quaint , home-run pension is a much more special experience than a big, commercial hotel. I can’t recommend this enough if you’re looking for a homey, low-key experience in a good location.

- Michael Hutchison (10/5): Great Japanese family vibe! Very well located right in the Nagano Olympic village. - I Loved Starlight Azumi but enjoyed the experience provided by the Japanese family who hosts and owns Starlight Azumi, a real sense of living in the snowy area of Hakuba, with family photos displayed throughout, you definitely get a feel of a genuinely cozy family run pension.
I loved it and stayed for 10 nights with plans to return next year,
Very reasonably priced and very central. You could very easily walk to Happo One. nothing really.
- Samuel (10/5): - Really nice staff

- Shawn (10/5): Best choice in Hakuba - Very warm-hearted staff and excellent service Can hear kids running outside when staying in the room
- Yuriy (6/5): Basic hotel built in the 60s with all the accompanying decor - The hotel is run by a kind elderly couple. It is situated only 200 meters from the Kokusai chair lift, so you can easily walk to the ski slopes. The facilities are shared, but there are 3 sinks, two separate bathrooms for men and women, two showers and a washer/drier available to guests. There is a cozy living room with a fire stove and large windows. The house was built in the 60s, and frankly, I am unsure if it underwent many alterations. The decor is brown and faded, each room has two spartan twin beds. Communication with the owners can be a bit challenging if you are not a Japanese speaker.
- Brown (10/5): Fantastic homestay in Japan alps - The owners were amazing and while the rooms were quite small, the location and charm was awesome.
Shared bathrooms were a concern but it's fine, the showers / onsen bath was fully private and lockable. Great if you want the onsen experience without the public bath.
Few minute walk to the lifts or rhythm for buses to goryu or iwatake. And about a 15 min walk to the bus stop for the further resorts. We loved Norikura and Cortina!
Price was much better than other options we had. Single beds for a couple.

- Alex (10/5): We had a lovely stay. The family that run the pension were so friendly and helpful. It was nice and peaceful and the hot - Very traditional and homely. Always warm and cosy. Heated floors in the bedroom are really great.
- Wei Jie (8/5): -
- Tayne (10/5): -
- Neil (9/5): Ideal Hakuba location - Traditional Japanese setting that felt homely. The floor of the bedroom was heated, which was amazing to come back to after being on the slopes. The owners were super welcoming and went out of their way to ensure my stay was as comfortable as possible. The jacuzzi was perfect for a soak! The bus service around the accomadationtion was unreliable, but this is no fault of the owners. Timetable is confusing. Go to across to Minomoki Hotel to plan your next day. Hakuba could do with more frequent free shuttles.
- Angus (10/5): A star of a stay - Staff were so friendly and accommodating, and the location was perfect and only a short walk from Kokusai slopw and buses for other mountains..
- Chantelle Nagel (9/5): -
- Merryn (8/5): -
- Lydia (10/5): Very cute traditional accommodation with the kindest hosts, would definitely stay again! - The hosts were so friendly and helpful and really made us feel welcome. The facilities were great and we found the place to be well situated, close to bus stops and walking distance from Happo one.
- Kathryn (7/5): Japanese family hospitality and access to the lifts. - Location in Hakuba One was very good- walking distance to Kokusai lift, with three mini bus stops shuttling to the different resorts. Staff were lovely and helpful, providing lifts to Main bus stop bound for Nagano. Breakfast was delicious and beautifully presented, with plenty of time to enjoy before lifts opened (additional to room rate). Hosts are Olympic royalty, with both father and son competing in Sapporo and Nagano Downhill/ GS events- enjoy the memorabilia in the front common room by the toasty wood fire. There are two large bathrooms for soaking in hot bath (like onsen but not from thermal source) after enjoying the slopes. Would definitely stay again when I come to visit the Nagano Alps! closer toilet. Kimono.
- Scot (9/5): - Convenient
Clean
Friendly
- Luke (10/5): Had an awesome stay. The owners were amazing! they even arranged to take us to the doctors when sick -
- Luke (9/5): -
- Si'Jia (9/5): Such a pleasant stay! - 5-10 mins walk towards Sakka lift
About 15-20mins walk to Nakiyama lift
Great place to stay in. Walking distance to the slopes and also down the street towards happo bus terminal
- Kieran (9/5): -
- Aaron (10/5): Beautiful lodge and great hospitality! - Lovely owners and a beautiful lodge. Great location close to the lift and a ten minute walk down to Happo town. Great breakfast and the private onsen is awesome. Perfect, no complaints.
- Olena_ES (10/5): Place where you would like to come back. - I had been staying in the pension for 5 nights and love everything about it, starting from the welcoming of owners and staff, their kindness, and assistance in any situation. I was impressed when we were invited to try/share japanese traditional New Year eve's dish (Toshikoshi soba).
Breakfasts were tasteful and nicely served (I like the yogurt and homemade jams the most). On reserving my trip, I was worried a bit about the queue to the shower. I need to admit that I had never been waiting to take a shower. Additional plus of the facility is its common area, where I was enjoying the fireplace and calmness.
Additionally, the pension is located just a few min by walk, even in boots and with all skiing gears, from the lift/shuttle bus stop.
I got what I wanted, a great combination of skiing and Japanese traditions. NIL
- Jessica (10/5): - We had an amazing stay at this location! Super cozy and perfect after a long day of snowboarding. The hosts are very kind and welcoming. Amenities were always very tidy. If you’re looking to experience Japan, this is definitely the place.
It was such a wonderful experience to stay at Starlight Azumino. A room and facilities are super clean. Staffs are very friendly. Though it was first time to stay at this place, I feel like home. I highly recommend this place. 特にありません。

- Thomas (9/5): A welcoming and comfortable Japanese ski lodge in a good location - A really nice semi traditional Japanese ski lodge which is run by a very friendly Japanese family who went above and beyond to answer any questions and make my stay both interesting and comfortable. Location was great if you are wanting to be near the Hapo 47 Ski lifts and Hakuba shuttle bus (5 minute walk) Only around 15-20 minute walk into the main Hakuba area. Furniture in the rooms was a little out-dated but that does add to the charm of the place
- Mark (10/5): great experience. lovely staff and great location - great accom. very accommodating and lovely couple running the lodge. they were very helpful and gave us lifts to and from the station as well as to the bus terminal some days
- Eric (10/5): Amazing hospitality and clean pension near Kokusai lift - Great location about 5 min away from the Kokusai lift. All of the building is warmed up, and the restaurant and lounge area are super cozy, with beautiful tables and a fireplace. The room is simple but spacious, and electric blanket is provided. All of the property is super clean, even the dry room, and there is no curfew. The family of the owners is super hospitable: we were treated with soba on New Year's Eve, and I was taken by car to the bus terminal and to the station. They made their best to make me feel at home and I am super thankful to them. Looking forward to my next stay.
