Guest Reviews
- KWAN MING (10/5): - Fireworks in summer very impressive
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The hot spring is not clean, there are many hair in the water.
- Sophia (8/5): - The tatami has some stain on it. Luckily the bedsheets is clean. We didnt know that they will come n setup the tatami for us so we did it on our own without any knowledge. When we back from dinner, someone came over. He was standing outside n see that we already did it, he just said ok and wanna walk away. We asked him to check he just simply walk in and dont even bother to check thru and said it was correct. Till we went to the next hotel with tatami setup, then we know we did it wrong way for the blanket. Very unprofessional
- Song Zhi (8/5): - Traditional and slightly dated onsen resort. The onsen was alright but need to take note to bring the towels down as they dont provide it below. However, the staff was all very helpful, the nightly firework shows are also viewable from our room which was a bonus & the morning view of the mountain at 4/5am WAS SOOOO GORGEOUS IT FELT MAGICAL! The morning breakfast was also good but not amazing! Overall will still stay here for the experience and the beautiful view! If you are looking for more modern amenities then look elsewhere~
- OwenArlia (2/5): Worst hotel I've been to in Japan - Forget any of the typical Japanese hospitality of having everything clean and incredible attention to detail. This is absolutely the worst hotel I've ever been in during my trips to Japan. The hotel is an extremely old building that hasn't seen proper maintenance and cleaning, everything is worn down and nothing is kept clean.
We stayed at one of the larger rooms which fits up to 6 futons and it has been anything but pleasant. None of us have been able to sleep and this stay felt like a complete waste of money.
Listing just some of the things wrong with this place:
1. Lots of uncleaned dirt and grime everywhere, check attach photos. The biggest ones were that there was literal MOLD on the ceilings from what seems to be water leakage and they DID NOT CARE to clean that. So that tells you how much they do not care about anything. Which can be seen from the disgusting mold and dirt even on the sink in the bathroom (which was also cracked).
2. A lot of the furniture and building itself is worn down and they did not bother to fix them to be presentable.
3. Aircon doesn't work and the room got very warm, was especially unpleasant after going from the hot spring.
5. No blackout curtains means light coming in and disturbing your sleep from 5am in the morning.
6. There was one toilet in the hot spring area and it was left uncleaned with pee on the floor.
7. There are no lounge or any free food or drinks available, unlike in other onsen. They have a "tatami relaxation area" which is literally just an empty tatami area and a vending machine beside it. You can't even get an extra towel in the hot spring area itself, you have to bring your own towel from the room.
The only redeeming thing was the buffet had a lot of selection and was somewhat interesting, but I am not worried about how clean they even kept the kitchen.
You might see good reviews for this onsen, but I really wonder if they are paid/bot reviews or just from people who has never been to better. In the hotel I see a lot of large tour groups from SE Asia countries, which to me seems like they are just here because they got a good deal and they didn't know better.
- Jay (10/5): - We were overwhelmed with the value, amenities and everyone's attention. Great stay and we highly recommend.
- Wan Ting (10/5): -
- sefuel (4/5): Very old hotel - The property is really old. Toilet is old... feels like they haven't change it since 1980s
Then the carpets in the hallway have alot stains.
- Zhongzhe (8/5): - The food is very good
- Wai Yi Abby (6/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5): Grand old hotel - Grand old hotel. The traditional Japanese and western bedrooms are both very good, with a lovely view of the lake on one side of the hotel. The in-room bathrooms spoil it; they are past their prime.
Buffet had an enormous, interesting and delicious variety of food.
Both onsens are excellent, parricularly the far outdoor one. Men's and women's facilities are swapped once per day, so both genders get to try both ends.
Great location on the lake and near eateries, shops and transport.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Nice people, onsen with a fab view, great location but tired property… rooms were basic but traditional and quant, bathrooms however had black mould and stank like public toilets. The window seal looking out to the beautiful view, also had black mould.
- Sammy (8/5): - Check out time too early!
First time need to pay extra money using hot spring in hotel in Japan.
- Angeline (10/5): Awesome stay! - Staff was really helpful to check and advise on JR train information even it is not their responsibilities.
The hot spring was very well maintain and comfortable to use.
Dinner and breakfast buffet variety is very good.
The lake view is perfect also !!
- Kum Ling (10/5): - The hotel is just on the shores of Lake Toya. Our room looked out to the beauty of the lake. Pleasant stay.
- Cory (8/5): - Property a bit old. Toilet is very small.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- BartChua (4/5): Choose a different hotel - We were very disappointed with our room. The carpet was stained, the bed sheets were graying instead of white and the bathroom was all plastic, from the walls to the tub to the sink. Being in the bathroom was like being in the bathroom of a standard room in a cruise ship.
The hotel had the overalls feel of being decrepit and neglected. We complained to our travel agent and got upgraded from a western style room to a Japanese style room which was marginally better. The room size was bigger but the bathroom was still the same yellowed plastic.
- Dennison (2/5): - Old. Central Air Condition was not working. They had to bring inc3 electric fans so I can sleep. Did ask to change room but they said “NO”
I would not go back there again
- HSING-CHUNG (8/5): - The onsen is winderful, however the dinner is not worth for the price. The room is large, but the bed is too old to sleep. It is not so confortable.
- Jeff (8/5): - Roomy, quiet, nice view from the room and very easy to get to the shore of the lake.
- Hiu Shun (10/5): -
- Akkadet (8/5): Nice hotel for relaxing and a nice view of the lak - Nice hotel for relaxing and a nice view of the lake. Nothing is around much. The onsen is not so many types, but ok for relaxing with the view.
- HAU HUN (8/5):
- weifeng huang (10/5): - Excellent !
- Yuk Kuen (6/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Sophie (6/5): The high price is for the onsen, not for the room - Awesome onsen and view over the lake Toya. Very diverse and nice dinner and breakfast buffet. Quality of the western style room average. I have stayed in cheaper hotels with better rooms. It was clean when I arrived, but has not been cleaned before the 2nd night of my stay. Extra bath tax charged at hotel during checkout.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Yuet Chun Winnie (6/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- Jess (8/5): - The view is wonderful and We like the onsen very much.
- ChrisLai08 (8/5): Comfortable - Sleep on Tatami in the floor.
The hot spring is excellent. Not too crowded and easy access to amenities inside. Good view to lake Toya.
Buffet was ok but not many choices
Nearby to drug store and 7-11.
The only cons is that the toilet is extremely tiny around 4’x4’
Apart from that everything is fine.
- V1110UBpaulm (6/5): Hotel of differing standards - My wife and I stayed in October 2019
Pros
Restaurant staff were very helpful. I loved the restaurant layout and service. It is cosy and traditional without being at all intimidating.
The dinner buffet was excellent. I have read previous reviews and perhaps the quality has improved.
Our room had a beautiful view of the lake. We had a small Japanese style seating area which was great.
The fireworks are fantastic. Would love to see them again.
Cons
Room was smoking when I had messaged and asked for non smoking. I suspect the website contact us form may not have worked.
Room quite smelly due to the smoke.
Bathroom tiny. I could sit down but certainly not very attractive.
Breakfast was ok but not as good as dinner.
The room is very old and tiny never stay again - I have been to stay at Lake Toya many years ago, and I have been looking forward to the hotel in Lake Toya. Check in at one pm,I didn't expect the hotel to give the Internet customer a poor and rating room 851. The room was not only very narrow and small, the carpet was worn out, the sofa was dirty, and the phone was an old-style rotary phone 20 years ago. It is hard to believe that such a dilapidated room would cost US$220. Ask the counter why the room is different from the photos on the Internet. The service staff answered that it was just a web photo. Seeking assistance from the hotel duty manager at 8/23 pm, the manager refused because he show did not understand English. It is hard to believe that the manager of a hotel does not understand English or deliberately pretends not to understand English? I am very grateful to a service person who speaks Chinese for his assistance in translation. After continuous communication with the counter, the counter later took out the key of Room 606 and told me that this was the type of room I originally ordered on the Internet. I don’t understand why the hotel was arranged at the beginning of the stay. What about the 851 room type? (The room in the west building is dilapidated, and the room in Dongdong is refurbished) In Japan, the price of a child under the age of 12 is cheaper, but the hotel charges the adult's expenses, which is really unreasonable! Although the hotel later let me upgrade the room type with the cost of adult and child , it has made me completely untrustworthy to this hotel! It is a pity that the beauty of Lake Toya is beautiful.
- Jason (4/5): - Very old property. Dinner place was oily. Variety of food was OK not fantastic. Plus is very close to fireworks. Musky smell in room.
- MeijeanC (4/5): View is good and that was it. - As in the title. The food was so-so, there were no numbers to call for room service, no hair dryer available and part of the wardrobe was stained in my mother's room. Would not recommend unless you are desperate for a decent view of lake toya.
- an12an (2/5): Room filthy dirty, onsen nice - The room was the dirtiest room I have seen in Japan. It was a Western style room, although we asked for Japanese style, and it was not lakeside. I wonder if this makes a difference. It was really dirty. If it had been a one-star hotel, I would have thought they could clean it better but ok; for a relatively expensive three star, it was really very dirty.
That being said, the onsen was very clean and the outdoor part had nice views of the lake. The dinner and breakfast were both good. I believe they have one dining area for Japanese and another for non-Japanese, and because we were with Japanese people, we ate in the Japanese section.
- Ryan (10/5): - Everything was relatively well and we had a really good stay. The breakfast and dinner buffet were a huge plus!
- Andrew_Deep_Blue (6/5): Old-school hotel with an (almost) to die for view! - Choose this hotel for its absolutely spot on location right next to Toya Lake (Toyako in Japanese). It has a front and centre view of Nakanoshima Island which sits in the middle of the Lake Toya caldera as well as the spectacular Mount Yotei in the background (snow-clad even in late May).
The room we got faces the front car park and not the more expensive lake-facing ones, some of which come with balconies. Our room is styled in the traditional Japanese ryokan which means futon mattresses and floor level dining table and chairs sitting on tatami mats.
The hotel has a nice lobby to the extent that we felt that the hotel's renovation budget was primarily spent on this part of the hotel and not on the rooms.
The hotel has an Onsen at level 9 which offers a direct view of the lake. Those who are open to this experience can take the opportunity to shower there instead of taking a bath in the room's small bathroom / toilet.
Buffet-style meals (breakfast and dinner) are offered in a large banquet room at level 2. The dinner spread was reasonable and focused more on Japanese / Chinese fare. The breakfast offering covers both Asian and Western palates.
When we checked in on a Friday, there was a firework display which started at 8.45pm which lasted for about 20 minutes. The fireworks were launched from boats and floating platforms on the lake. The display takes place every night at 8.45pm.
There is a long and wide path running between the hotel and the lake which allows guests to take in the majestic natural vista that is Lake Toya.
This hotel is recommended for a no-frills stay at lakeside Toyako, well no-frills except for the daily fireworks display!
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Thomas (10/5): - Staffs are polite and willing to help. The room is clean with nice view. I love their onsen even it’s not very big, but you would be enjoyed.
- Yao chen (2/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- hung yi (6/5): dont stay there i think - first it was confusing with the language when check in
second the food was soooooo terrible
i am not sure because the foreigner paid less or what. i saw the japanese went to the different restaurant

the only i like was the view and the hotspring it was nice and clean
- Verified traveler (8/5): . -
- HUNGTIN (8/5): - good good good.................................................................................
- KK (8/5): - Good view. The room is rather old but ok. Dinner anf Breakfast is ok.
- Kate (6/5): -
- mdscott76 (8/5): A genuine Japanese hotel experience - This hotel has received a number of negative reviews which do not bear out with the experience my family and I had last week. We stayed two nights. The Kohantei is a need of a little renovation, but overall, it is very well presented, very clean with impeccable staff. The cost per night does appear expensive - approx. 30,000 Yen per night for a family of four, however this includes breakfast and dinner and bus transfer from and too Sapporo Station or the New Chitose Airport.
I will discuss each aspect of the Kohantei experience in detail.
Bus transfer. We departed from Sapporo Station at 1.30pm and arrived in Toyako at approximate 4.30pm. It should be noted that in the height of winter, the bus is often only travelling at 40kmh with maybe a max speed of 60kmh. It is a long trip but very picturesque. The driver stops for one comfort break as there is no toilet on the bus. The return trip departs the Hotel at 9.45 am and arrives at Sapporo Station at approximately 12.45pm.
Arrival.
Hokkaido gets dark early in the winter and Toyako is no exception. So 4.30pm means the whole resort town is in late dusk. The front desk staff were courteous and professional. Most members could speak English. The staff advised on meal times and hotel and town diversions.
The Room.
We had a 14 tatami mat room overlooking the mountains. If possible, opt for the lake view. It is glorious as the mountain view is more the view of the side of snow bound land feature. The room fittings were a little frayed but overall in good order. A bottle of cold water was in the fridge and tea and rice crackles were waiting on the main room table. Yukata robes for four were in the robe. Note - kids size and extra large yukata are available in the lobby. Also available in the lobby are the colourful summer girls yukata with silk obi and zori sandles. Yukata are worn throughout the hotel. You wear them to the Onsen, you wear them to dinner, you wear them in the lobby. You wear them to sleep. They are very comfortable. The heating in the hotel is sufficient that you can wear the cotton yukata without a jacket. After you return from dinner on your first night, you will find the hotel staff have laid out the futons for sleeping. The linen is clean, fresh and crisp. We found that the 14 mat room was very roomy for a family of four.
Onsen.
The 9th floor of the hotel is the onsen floor. There are two - one for males, the other for women. The onsens are switched so the guests get a chance to experience both types of bath as they are different. Both have epic views over the lake. One though has its outdoor section under cover with two large round baths and a stone lined Rotenburo (outdoor natural pond style bath). The other onsen has a big outdoor area that is completely open to the world. It has a big round bath and three bathroom type baths on a deck as well as the Rotenburo. When we were staying, this outdoor area was covered in snow. Very beautiful and an amazing experience sitting in the 47C onsen water with snow falling on your hair. Both onsens have indoor baths as well, with a huge plate glass window separating the bather from the world and the magnificent view. The onsen facilities are spotless.
Dining
The room fee includes breakfast and dinner in a buffet restaurant. Contrary to the other reviews, we found the buffet to have a good selection of various Japanese dishes including fresh sashimi. Breakfast had both Japanese and western options available. The food was fresh, well made and presented. The house miso soup was an outstanding prawn/shrimp made broth packed with flavor. Soft drink, hot and cold tea and coffee is available on the buffet. Beer, sake and shochu is available, however is a little on the expensive side by Japanese standards, with a chu-jockey coming in at 650 Yen. A 2000 Yen drink package is available for one hour.
Hotel facilities.
There is a shop that sells a very good array of local products as souvenirs as well as array of minor groceries including alcohol. Prices are very reasonable with 500ml cans of Sapporo Classic selling for 310 Yen. Drinks purchased from the shop can be drank in the hotel lobby. The hotel bar was closed during our stay. There is a games room with karaoke booths, pool and table tennis. These can be paid for at reception.
Hopefully readers will find this review helpful. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Kohantei and would recommend it to anyone.
- yml2029 (2/5): Don’t waste your money on this down trending hotel, bad food, staff, room.
- O1404ZXannat (2/5): Staff rude - Hotel also have bad condition, room was so cool and he give me that room, this only for room and not have good warm.. just small cold wind from that machine ,Toya Kohantei staff not friendly, she rude I just can not read her name
- Chi Ho David (6/5): - Poor buffet dinner, not much choice and food not fresh.
- Wan ying (8/5):
- xojhuixo (6/5): Amazing onsen view but food was disappointing - You get to gaze at the amazing combination of mountains and lake while you soak in the wooden barrel in the onsen. We enjoyed the soak so much that we went 3 times in the one night that we stayed.
Hotel bellboy and receptionist were extremely helpful and friendly too.
However, other than the above, the rest of my stay was subpar. Maybe it’s because the hotel is catered towards large tour groups so most of the food tasted frozen or from cans. The pineapple and mangos were sadly from cans and the lychees were frozen. I believe a hotel can do better than that. Ventilation in the dining hall was extremely bad as well and I smelt super bad after leaving the dining hall.
Way too many tourists to properly enjoy our stay.
- LEE (4/5): Poor communication skill - Hotel staff communication skill was poor. Unable to understand simple English.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice hotel with a prime view to the lake
- loteoc (10/5): Day onsen - I did not sleep here, but just used their onsen for a 800JPY admission fee. Talking about onsen with a view, in my experience this is right at the top with another one facing Kagoshima bay that I visited a few years ago. Soaking in the pool on the terrace watching the light changing over the lake and the small island is priceless. I went just after noon and almost nobody was ther, which added to the experience. The bus stop is right in fron of the hotel, so you don't even need a car to get here.
- G_Intl_Travel (10/5): Nice hotel and onsen - This place is clean although a bit dated. The rooms are well kept with nice amenities, and the onsen is very good. We came here in Nov, and found the heating to be very good. As the weather was turning cold, we expect the heating to be kept up. Even in the onsen, we find the heating to be able to counter the cold outside. After a nice dip in the outdoor onsen, one need not worry about catching a cold as the place is well insulated.
Overall, nice hotel, good food, and best onsen with the Toyako view.
- KennethOJJ (4/5): Only the fireworks - Be sure not to miss the fireworks routine. Best view of Lake Toya if you have the lake view rooms. Unfortunately not my case but that wasn’t the main issue. The size of the room was good but the cleanliness wasn’t. The windows and the floor were really dusty. Dinner wasn’t appetizing as well.
