Guest Reviews
- Conny (4/5): It was terrible as compared to other places I’ve booked in Nelspruit - Nothing The rooms were stuffy , the smell of cats everywhere not clean at all .
- KATSUKI (10/5): Perfect vacation place - Apprently Top 3 hostel out of where I ever stayed in 41 countries.
I originally booked for three nights, but this place is so incredibly comfortable that I ended up staying for five—and honestly, I still didn’t want to leave. The first thing that struck me upon arrival was just how massive the property is. Being tucked away in the middle of nature with the constant, soothing sound of the river made it an ideal spot to focus on my work. The property is also a bit of a haven for animal lovers; I spotted five cats, two dogs, and even rabbits and peacocks.
The highlight of the trip was definitely the Kruger National Park safari. I joined a tour organized right here at the hostel and was thrilled to encounter so many wild animals. It was also a pretty unique experience sharing a dormitory with the tour guide! When I wasn't out on safari, I spent time by the pool—the water was quite chilly, but it was perfect for a quick refresh. In the evenings, we gathered around the bonfire space, where I had the chance to experience an authentic Braai with a super nice South African friend I met there.
Between the great vibes and the hospitality of Dave and Bella, my digital nomad work was more productive than ever. Dave is locally known as "Crazy Dave," and while I spent my whole stay wondering why, I finally got the full story from a local taxi driver on my last day. Even when I was leaving for Maputo, Mozambique, they gave me some great local tips that made the journey much easier. I’ll definitely be back for a much longer stay next time. The only real problem with this place is that it’s so cozy you’ll struggle to decide when it's actually time to check out.

- MARCIN (10/5): Ottima soluzione per i veri viaggiatori! - La struttura è situata in una posizione molto tranquilla e piena di verde.
I titolari, Dave e Bella, molto professionali e sempre disponibili!
Consiglio vivamente!

- Daniel (1/5): Unpleasant and service not worth my money, at all. - The room was clean. That’s about it I can say that’s good about this place. I booked for 3 nights but only stayed 1 night.
Firstly, the room I paid for was a SHARED dorm room with bunk beds and a shared bathroom. That’s not what the description said and was not was agreed to. But this was upon my arrival.
They said if I wanted my own room and bathroom, I have to pay extra R600. Which was R200 extra per night. I had booked for 3 extra nights. So I paid for it expecting a much better deal because they said it included much more. So I paid for that. I paid the extra R600. In total I paid R1485 for 3 nights. The power was out when I arrived to the accommodation. They said the power will be on within an hour.
I sat and waited, no power came on. I had a cold shower and then went out until 10pm. I arrived just before 10pm and went to my room. The power was STILL off.
I didn’t want to stay there because there was no power so I couldn’t watch tv, I had no internet / WiFi, I had no A/C and no lights for the entire evening and it was extremely hot. I also could not charge my devices, couldn’t have a warm shower.
I could not do anything.
So I went to reception the next morning, asked them why my power was off only to find out that my room’s plugs were switched off on the DB board. After which I wanted to make a coffee when the power was on in my room, I opened the coffee and sugar jars and found that it was infested with ants. I went to reception again, the lady came and asked for the whole tray with everything on it. I gave it to her. I packed my stuff and asked her for a refund for the next 2 nights that I paid for but won’t be staying for. She said because I paid with card and not cash, they can’t give me the refund in cash. I have to ask the owner.
I asked for the owner’s details and she gave me the Old Vic’s business card with 3 phone numbers and an email address on it and said I should email the owner on that email address and he will attend to it when he returns from Swaziland. So I did that.
Nicely requesting a refund.

- Leo (7/5): Good -
- Jeremiah (9/5): Great Place to Stay in Nelspruit! - Loved this place! Felt so cozy and homey. Lots of open spaces and common areas, there’s also a pool where guests can cool off.
Kitchen facilities were right at the dorm room which was so convenient. There’s a stove, microwave, and fridge that guests could use.
The location is great too. Sure, it’s not at the town center but it’s in a safe, quiet residential area. If you need food, there’s a SPAR just 20 minutes away on foot, as well as a couple of restaurants. The staff could help you order food for delivery too. If you need to go to the town center, it’s easy to book a cab from here.
It’s easy to book tours. Dave helped me book the perfect tour and found people I could join to cut down expenses cause i was traveling solo.
The staff were great! They were all friendly and helpful. Dave and Bella were the perfect hosts, made me feel right at home! Wish i could have stayed longer! Just minor gripes. wifi was weak and spotty at times at the dorm room i was at. Not a problem in the common areas though. Also there are only a few electrical sockets in the dorm room. Wasn’t a problem when i was there, but it could be a problem if the dorm is full.
- Khumalo (5/5): Passable -
- Karabo (8/5): Very good - Peaceful surrounding, safe premises, welcoming owners and staff members It's only doometory rooms,no space for private rooms
- Lwando (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nonkululeko (3/5): Poor -
- Renata (10/5): Great choice for a solo traveler - My experience was amazing! A friend recommended me Old Vic and I couldn’t have had a best place to start my vacation! They helped me even before I arrive and I could plan the transfer from de airport and the tours with peacefully. Their property is beautiful! The room was excellent, very comfortable and made me feel at home. I could wake up hearing the birds. I booked the tours with Dave and had the best experiences. He is fun, very friendly and experienced guide. Definitely I will recommend for everybody to stay here with Bella and Dave! I liked everything.
- Mthombeni (8/5): Very good -
- Carolyn (8/5): Very good -
- Emma (8/5): Very good -
- Sophia (7/5): All I can say is Nelspruit is the most expensive area ridiculously inflated because of tourists so it is worth it to dri - The Staff was awesome and attentive and the guide that became my “uncle” his tours were great very knowledgeable I especially liked Swaziland … the animals around everywhere were a big plus! I love animals The noise at night made me annoyed…as well the expensive airport transfers back and forth was ridiculous pricing and the power kept going off it was insane
- Vuyo (5/5): Passable -
- Benette (10/5): Exceptional - The view
- Vuyokazi (8/5): Very good - I enjoyed the scenery the most. The room on the floor was not cleaned regularly

- Alfred (8/5): Very good -
- Paul (2/5): Very poor -
- Andile (8/5): Very good -
- Krull (7/5): Good - Pool and rooms were always clean. Gate service was great. It needs to be advertised in the website clearly that breakfast is not included in the price you pay to stay there. I don't think it should be advertised as a B&B if breakfast is not included in the price. And because I had not budgeted to spend extra on meals I did not have any meals at the Inn.
- Mabena (10/5): Exceptional - The environment and the rooms where we stayed. It was clean and quiet To convert the rooms into self catering.Iprefer to cook for my family. It was costly to buy food daily .

- Chanell (10/5): Exceptional -
- Myeni (1/5): Bad -
- Josh (8/5): Very good -
- Sharon (10/5): Exceptional - Hospitality cleanness and staff like everything is perfect. Nothing just the place is good when you have your own car cause the the taxi is expensive
- Mudiwa (8/5): The very friendly and helpful staff led me to consider staying here again in future - The staff were verry friendly and accommodating
- Mudiwa (9/5): Basic but well-maintained facilities. Excellent staff. I will return - I particularly liked how warmly we were welcomed and how all requests were cheerfully met.
- Johannes (2/5): We booked out the next morning We ask to see the owner but no luck we sent a mail no replay not grom the owner or Bookin - Location and staff They were not prepared fur us Bar was close or do not have your drinks Restaurant was close for lunch and dinner When we told them we want Breakfast that was included in the price we were told they only offer toast and fried eggs for is Not prepared at all for quest who booked for a week We booked out the next morning

- Vermeulen (10/5): Loved every moment. Beds comfortable excellent service - Staff friendly
Awesome vibe
Will definitely go back again The location is close to everything
- Robert (6/5): It did the job. - The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean. The lady at reception gave off an air of being far too busy to answer my very normal traveller questions even though the hostel was nearly completely devoid of any other guests.
They had 2 big flags in the reception area that most people associate with apartheid in 2024. Quite bad taste considering this is a hostel in South Africa.
- Matildah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Enrico (7/5): Good -
- Mahlalela (10/5): Exceptional -

- Mavuso (8/5): It’s a beautiful place. Very quiet. Very safe .The birds in the backyard are gorgeous - The backyard is beautiful. The reception smells like cats . The pool was abit green .
- Sandra (9/5): Had a great time, would go back - Location was great and the staff very helpful and friendly
- Bernitia (1/5): Bad -
- Runganda (3/5): Poor - The people are racists arrived late in the night the treatment was not pleasant and was asked to pay 400 rand on top of the booking fee to change from where I head booked to another room. The room was comfy n tidy
- Sello (1/5): Was not good - Good
- Thabapelo (7/5): I enjoy my stay ,with few challenge I mentioned - Good Accessibility, person with disabilities struggling to move around the place due to stipness/stairs

- Mo (8/5): Very good -
- Akki (7/5): It was good. - It was good value for the amount we paid. Safe location The huge animal cage near the pool
- Nathen (8/5): Very good -
- Cauê (10/5): Exceptional - The place was really great!
Dave and all the staff were really nice.
The room was spacious, the bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom and shower were good. The only thing i can say is: bring a plug extension if you are staying in a shared room and want to use your cellphone charging in bed. The plug is close to door. If there's close to the beds, i havent seen, sorry.
The hot shower runs on gas, so if it doesn't work, let Dave know and he'll either fix it or direct you to another shower. No worries.
The room heater worked really well. Despite the cold weather outside, I slept extremely well without feeling cold.
The common facilities were also great, with a good kitchen, a very nice outdoor area, and a few bird aviaries. also, The laundry works fine!
I spent an afternoon working and drinking some beers on the balcony, and it was quite pleasant.
It was low season, so no food prepared on site in the afternoon/night, but he sells beer for a good price and can get you food delivered.
I stayed with them for one night before going to Kruger for a overnight tour with other company (Dave was doing other tours in that period), and when I returned, I stayed there again. In the meantime, they allowed me to keep the food I had bought on the first day in the kitchen fridge for my return.
Had a perfect time with them and would recommend at most. Attention only to the 2 points below. Business partners: taxi driver and the bank requirements.
1 - Terrible experience with the partner taxi driver, Ben - or should have been him.
Called him upon arrival from the bus, he told me would arrive in 10 min max. I waited for 40min on the street, quite strange/dangerous place and had my backpack with me.
Some guys leaving a bar nearby asked me what I was doing there, showed concern for me, and decided they would only leave after my taxi arrived. It could have been gone really bad for me if not for that.
I didn't cancel it cause every time I called, he would say 3-5 minutes max, but he wouldn't tell me where he was. Well, when arrived, became clear: Ben sent another guy, that’s why he didn’t know where was.
On my way out, 2nd: my bus was at 9am, and I agreed with 8 a.m. max at the hostel (it's a 10 min drive).
Result: same thing, from 8 a.m. onwards, he kept saying he was on his way, 5 min max. The lady at front desk called a number and recognize the voice: Ben sent someone else again. At 8h40, nothing. A guest offered me a ride in his car and I got just in time for my bus. Don’t know Ben, but at least he should have said. One time: happens. Two times in a row: It’s a pattern. Get another guy.
2 - Paid my stay here through Booking. When arrived, Dave informed that needed a photo of the used card info. Showed me a document in which the bank demanded and told me a story that another Brazilian guy committed fraud with him by using his mother card without her knowledge. I understand his side, but also don’t know how common it is in SA (didn’t need in other hostels), but def didn’t feel comfortable with it. I use a virtual card, so I sent a print with some numbers scratched out and I’m not using it anymore. If it had been with my physical one, I would not have accepted it.. Don’t take me wrong, but don’t want anybody with my cards full info besides me.
- Nobuhle (9/5): Superb -
