Guest Reviews
- Helen (9/5): It’s a nice hotel and I wish we could have stayed longer. We had to rush off as we had a long traveling day. - We booked two rooms for one night and they were right next to each other so that was super considerate. The rooms were spacious enough and the staff were extremely helpful and went out of their way to help out. The Onsen is beautiful with several pools. Great facilities. The breakfast was amazing (Japanese style) and the views were breathtaking out of the windows. The onset is a real thermal spring and has a bit of a smell that my son didn’t enjoy much. But it was part of the experience. (The grown ups didn’t mind).
- Erika T (8/5): - Nice hotel located next to the ropeway , good place to stay however it seems they will be undergoing renewal works and will be close from May 2026 onwards
Overall the hotel is big and is located next to a river and nice Onsen
Staff is nice and friendly, who are made up of international staff and speaks English. NA
- Sophie (10/5): - Tous.

- Jasmaine (10/5): - This is really a superb place to stay, large room with more than sufficient space for big luggage. There is outdoor parking just next to the hotel and alot more public parking 2mins away where the ropeway is. The decor is a little dated but is the character of the older onsen hotels. The dinner and breakfast were a star to the experience, specially curated Japanese menu and introduction to the delicious Hida beef. I chose a room with a view where you could see the snow capped mountains and running stream next to the hotel. The air was so crisp but cold though. There was onsen at the basement. I had such a nice sleep with comfy linen and perfect pillows and large single twins. It is highly recommended to have the half board option, definitely worth it. The toilet and bath was in the same area and was not levelled so need to have one step up and quite squeezy. I supposed it fits fine for standard Asian size. But it is workable.

- João (8/5): Gorgeous outside onsen and traditional rooms - The staff was very polite and accommodating to all our requests. The dinner and breakfast were both luxurious and tasty. The outside onsen is so beautiful and peaceful, it was raining and foggy and it was magical. We booked a traditional room and it was very beautiful. The meals felt a bit rushed but we were not told there were time limits, I would have liked to know that if that's the case. The breakfast was tasty but way too big, I felt bad for leaving so much food on the table.

- Jennie (6/5): - The hotel is very dated and has a musky smell. The food was very average. We arw quite disappointed about the food. The locatio is far. Except that it is very close to the ropeway.

- Bill (8/5): Traditional Japanese hotel in a great location. Don't have a big lunch if you want to eat dinner! - Traditional Japanese hotel in a great location by the cable car up the mountain. The dinner was included and was a real feast - very traditional and focused around a burner on the table with many small side dishes. Breakfast was remarkably similar to dinner. Room was comfortable, if not especially modern. The river was extremely noisy, especially after it rained, even through triple glazing. It's lovely, but.... The dinners were too much, even after an active day - we couldn't eat them all and on the second evening, we really wanted something less complicated. Not much to do when it is raining.
- Janet (9/5): Very special mountain location with wonderful hot spring baths. - Lovely mountain retreat with gorgeous onsen, both indoor and outdoor bathing areas. Strong sulphur smell from hot springs.
- Nurul (8/5): Very good - Awesome view overlooking the snow cap mountain. The Japanese style room was spacious for our family of 5. Enjoyed our stay here. No mini mart nearby for late night snacks.
- Vanessa (8/5): Very good -
- Chun (9/5): Great stay here. - Great breakfast and dinner. Outdoor onsen is superb. None.
- Kum (9/5): Superb - Very good dinner prepared by the hotel.
- Alcides (10/5): Amazing experience! I recommend both the dinner and breakfast. - Awesome cuisine!!!!!!!!!
Really good hot springs.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Duangmanee (8/5): Very good - The A5 wagyu was top notched. Love the dinner and breakfast.
- Piyawadee (8/5): Very good -
- Cheng (8/5): Good location for visit to ropeway - Location is good
- Jessica (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lalita (9/5): Everything exceeded our expectations. It offered great privacy. We highly recommend this place. - Onsen/traditional meals/scenery
- Gan (9/5): Superb - Food serve in delicious. Location super good for shinhotaka ropeway As long as fine in everything
- Michal (8/5): Very good - The location right under the ropeway! The traditional meal was lovely The design a bit outdated
- Louis (10/5): Fabulous place for a relaxing retreat in the mountains - Ideally located if you're planning on taking the Shinhotaka ropeway (as moving around the villages can be hard without a car as you have to follow the bus timetable), the place is set on giving you the best experience for a relaxing stay by the mountain.
The room was superb, diner was great and the onsen is cherry on the cake.
Relaxing in a hot spring outside in the cold with snowflakes running around while contemplating the snowy mountains around really makes a magical moment
- mUHAMMAD JAMAL (8/5): - Its proximity to the ropeway was the biggest catch. They have a true onsen but sadly people are naked and don’t wear clothing and modesty is not followed . The staff are great and speak good English. The breakfast is generous but doesn’t quite fit the foreign pallet . Recommendation is that enjoy the delicious bakery items in the ropeway eateries .
- Boontida (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bee (9/5): A walk across to ShibHotaka Ropeway - Its proximity to the shinhotaka ropeway. As the group wanted to be first in line for the ropeway to enjoy the Views of the Japan Alps. It’s remote n there are no eating places around. Highly recommend full board with Hotel Hotaka.
This Means both breakfast n sit down dinner. Excellent set meal n our group was given a private room.
- Charunya (8/5): Worth for money - Nice dinner, good onsen and location, attach the ropeway
station. no
- Tohru (10/5): - Great hotel!
- Quah (10/5): Exceptional - Next to bus stop and ropeway. Rooms are big and clean. There is indoor and outdoor onsen. Surrounding area is scenic. Staff are friendly and helpful. None.
Good!
- Jenny (7/5): Good -
- Gerald (8/5): Very good -
- Sing (8/5): Very good - Location very close to cable car station
- Kai (10/5): - Sehr schöne lage
- Ilse (8/5): Very good - This is the real traditional experience that you might be looking for in Japan! It is rather expensive but again, you have a very authentic experience with the onsen, rooms and food (dinner and breakfast). Japanese people do eat faster than Belgian people: we felt a bit rushed going through all the courses but again ... authentic experience
- Rudi (10/5): - Alittle overprice, but overall satisfied since I did last minute booking
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Masaki (8/5): - よい
- Bin (10/5): - Nice dinner for Hida beef and breakfast. But their price does not clearly indicate $67 includes dinner and breakfast. Nice hot spring indoor and outdoor.
- Anabella (9/5): Superb -
- Thomas (7/5): Very nice one I got used to the smell and then fold. But a very pretty area. The rope way was amazing. - The onsens were great. And the ropeway was really pretty. The sulfur smell from the water was pretty bad. They didn’t have western food especially breakfast so we didn’t eat at the restaurant much.
- Fadi (10/5): Great location, excellent onsen, spacious rooms - I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this hotel. Everything was great, the food was good, the view breath-taking, the rooms spacious and the hotel had a lovely retro vibe to it. The Onsen were incredible.
- George (8/5): Okay for one night, Kaiseki meal experience and western-style room - Being right next to the bus stop at the Shinhotaka Ropeway made it easy to find and get to the hotel. With the two day Nohi bus + Ropeway ticket it was convenient to get on and off the bus and go to other places on the route between Takayama and the Ropeway. The Japanese kaiseki meals were an experience(!) and their inclusion in the room rate was one of the reasons we booked this hotel. The staff were very hospitable and did their best to describe the different courses in the meals. As other reviews have mentioned, which we did not pay enough attention to, the hotel was actually quite dated. The pictures in the listing do not reflect how it currently looks. Having said that, it was well maintained. We made the decision to stay near the ropeway, rather than go only for a day trip, at the last minute, so our choices of accomodation were limited. The size of the western style room, which is what we wanted, was acceptable by Japanese standards, but not on the riverside, so we didn't have any view. The hotel was nowhere near full, so I'm not sure why they couldn't have given us a room with an outlook, especially considering the room rate we paid. Maybe only the Japanese Style rooms are on the river side? Make sure you request a room on the river side of the hotel. From the listing summary, "...Featuring 2-Michelin stars..." Hmmm... Having eaten at 2-star restaurants all over the world, to be honest, this rating surprised me. The breakfast time of 7:00 to 8:00 is too limiting and smacks of the timing being for the convenience of the hotel and not their guests. When I'm on holiday I don't like being forced to get us this early. Also, in hindsight, I would suggest they offer the Kaiseki evening Dinner with an optional western breakfast, even just a Continental Breakfast, as my breakfast stomach wasn't ready for another culinary adventure. My guess is that the hotel caters mostly for an older Japanese traveller and we were not their target market. We did not feel we got value for money.
- Kristina (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean everywhere, provided toiletries and free water to refill. The shower was hot and the room was warm. It was right next to the Shinhotaka Ropeway, so it was very easy to get to the hotel by bus and go to the Ropeway. It was really easy to get to all the other attractions by bus too. You get free access to the indoor and outdoor part of the Shinhotaka Onsen, which is lovely! You have to reserve breakfast and dinner 2 days in advance and there aren't any shops nearby, so if you don't do this, you'll go hungry!
- Drew (10/5): Wonderful Onsen in a very remote location. - The onsen was amazing. The onsen on the men’s side consisted of one indoor pool, two outdoor pools, and two individual tubs outside. It was amazing. The hotel itself was a bit dated and the staff, while wonderful, were not as attentive as other Ryokans we have stayed. One other reviewer described it like staying at grandma’s house. This was a fair comparison. Finally, this hotel is very remote, the last place on the bus route. Given the price we could have stayed closer to town, but we loved the Onsen and our overall experience was excellent. Dated property that could use a bit of TLC.
- Ivan (9/5): Amazing place in the mountains with a natural onsen - Situated next to the Shin-Hotaka ropeway, has amazing breakfasts/dinners, but most importantly a natural onsen in the basement. The only missing thing is - they don’t provide lunches.
- Malairat (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bungon (9/5): Superb -
- Traveloftwohalves (6/5): Overnight stay in Hotaka Hotel. - The room is spacious with big bed and right next to the Ropeway. Dinner was good. Friendly staff. Unable to check in before 3pm.
- Mera (5/5): Passable -
- Sih (10/5): Exceptional - Comfortable
- Man Yee Maggie (10/5): A5 Hida Beef - Exceeding my expectation, good value for outstanding service, A5 Hida beef and comfortable real hot spring water. English speaking and helpful sraff is available.
- Hoi (9/5): Everything about the room was exceptional !!! If you want to go to the ropeway, the location is very convenient!! - Location If we want room service order food , there are not available!
- Effie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alan (10/5): - Hotel Hotaka is just about 50m from the ropeway station. The bus stop right beside the hotel. A very cosy and nice hotel with nice indoor and outdoor hotspring.
- Gary (9/5): Superb -
- Noona (9/5): Superb -
- Dendow (10/5): Exceptional - Location is perfect because it's nesr Shin Hortaka Ropeway. Dinner and Breakfast is good. Onsen is very good. All staff is the best. The room is large and clean. Welcome drink is well. No.
- Duangdean (7/5): Good -
- Duangdean (7/5): Good location and good dinner - When went down from the Hotaka rope way,it’s location very near.save time. Smell something during i was there.just like waste from piping system.
- Ting (9/5): Superb -
- Lai Fun (8/5): -
- Kitty (7/5): For the convenience and proximity to the ropeway - I chose this hotel because it is adjacent to the ropeway. Unfortunately, the no.2 ropeway was under maintenance. If I have known this earlier, I would have cancelled my stay.
Three of us stayed in a traditional tatami room for the experience only. This is indeed okay, I could not say it's fantastic (when I compared to other traditional hotel I stayed in Japan). The private bath would make the highlight of the stay, you will be able to enjoy natural spring water bath.
The staff are hospitable.
Quite a lot of Japanese elderly stayed in this hotel, maybe it's due to the proximity to ropeway or indeed they prefer this type of traditional hotels, I guess.
The hotel is also located right next to the bus stop, which is the final stop of the line. Plus point! While the pictures look okay, the hotel was actually a bit dated, including the bath. Just to manage expectation.
The meals (dinner and breakfast) were both included in the room rate. While they taste okay, they are average.
My parents quite like it, but I found it quite dirty, especially I found hairs in the wash basin when I enter the room. And I could not stand the musty smell when I entered the lobby.
- Nalinee (8/5): - Near tourist attractions
