Guest Reviews
- Angelika (10/5): - Outstanding service, we had a pleasant stay with
- Dorthe (8/5): Interesting stay - The hosts are very kind and considerate and we had a nice stay in a traditional Japanese style room with very authentic Japanese meals for dinner and breakfast. The hotel is perhaps a little dated but it added to the charm and it is very clean. We didn’t get to try the outdoor onsen as we had hoped as we were put off but a large spider other guests alerted us to. Nevertheless we enjoyed our stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Super!!! - Super!!! Everyrhings OK...Execept outside ryogan. Outside bathtob was closed. However, great experience and nice meals. Thanks.
- Jeffrey (6/5): Has potential - Nice location and beautiful surroundings. Ryokan has definitely seen better days and is need of refurbishing. Still staff is friendly and helpful. Meal is traditional so may not be for everyone. The onsens also look dated and can be brighter.
- Farzad (10/5): - We loved our stay at Ryokan Sansui. The view of the mountains around the hotel were amazing with tri-colored foliage.
The staff were also very lovely and kind. The food was also delicious and more than I had expected. Communication wasn't too easy, but the message would get across.
The best part was, of course, the onsen (hot spring) experience. They offer both public (gender-separated) hot springs and baths, as well as 4 private ones that don't need prior booking or extra fees.
Getting there and back took a lot of time though, so our 1-day trip seemed a bit too short.
- Thomas (10/5): - Lovely rooms and in-site onsen (both public and private). Great quiet location; convenient to get to and from.
Has a lovely dinner and an Izakaya nearby.
- Bryan (10/5): - The host family is extremely kind and friendly. They prepared delicious meals in accordance with our dietary preferences. It was a pleasant, restful place to stay while we explored the beauties of the Kamikochi region. We greatly enjoyed our stay!
- David (8/5): - Staff was very helpful in planning my trips each morning, asking where I was planning to go and then helping me find the right bus to take. The night of my arrival as I walked pass the ryokan they called out to me so I would not remain lost.
- Kam Hung Kenneth (10/5):
- Jonathan (10/5): - The hosts and staff made this a particularly pleasant and unique stay. They were very attentive and helpful.
A delicious Traditional Japanese Dinner and breakfast were served to us in a private room.
There are public and private bathhouse options- all of which were very clean, comfortable, and relaxing!
- Imran (10/5): - I went to this hotel twice. The first time was last year and the second time this year
One of the best in the area
The staff are friendly and kind. I really enjoyed my accommodation here
- Vanessa (10/5): - The service and attention to details were top notch. The owner/manager was very helpful and with his help we were able to go to Kamikochi by public transportation even though it was closed. We really wanted to do this so his help was much appreciated. We did not have breakfast but the dinner was very good and served by these nice attentive ladies which we really enjoyed. The ryokan is more traditional which worked for us in the remote mountains. The view from the spacious lobby area was very pretty.
- Etienne (10/5): - We very much enjoyed our stay at Ryokan Sansui. Our host was excessively kind and the stay was great. We particularly enjoyed the private baths, especially the larger one which is tucked away.
- Fong Dik (10/5): - The host is very warm and friendly, food is natural and nice, overall is a very pleasant experience.
- Margarida (10/5): - We had a wonderful time, everyone was very kind and welcoming and the onsens were amazing
- Alan (8/5): - The hotel is easy to get to from Matsumoto by bus on a very scenic ride. We were collected by the hotel manager from the bus stop. This is a very sleepy village, though we ate at two very good restaurants. The hotel has seen better days (not really a Ryokan). However two major highlghts: were their evening meal which was was brilliant, incredible course after course in a private dining room. Equally, the experience of sitting in their hot pool looking at the mountains was very memorable. Catching the bus down to Takayama was easy at the end of our stay.
- Damon (8/5): Lovely Owner/Manager! - Off the beaten path, and probably best suited with a car (which we rented), but also accessible by bus/taxi. Owner/Manager was SUPER nice and helpful. Breakfast and dinner were unique and tasty, and reasonably priced. Very close to Kamikochi, and a few dining options nearby by car (and possibly an itzakaya across the street...if the owner is not napping 😆). 3 lovely private onsens on-site, too, plus 2 public for M and F. Nice alternative to western hotels with tatami mats and a lovely view of the mountains.
- Kevin (10/5): - We felt very taken care of. The property has not seen renovations since the early 70s, I suspect. It actually adds to the charm of the place.
- Bryan (10/5): - The hosts were extremely hospitable and helpful. They prepared exceptionally delicious meals tailored to our dietary preferences. The onsen areas are beautiful and peaceful. The scenery is incredible, and it is close to wonderful hiking and sightseeing. We greatly enjoyed our stay. Highly recommended!
- Shawn (10/5): - This was a delightful surprise. It is a 40-min bus or taxi ride up from Takamaya and is well worth the trip out and back. We stayed longer here than most other hotels.
We will remember this one for its charm, the kindness and cooking skills of the owner and family, and the nearby ryokans that provide the best lunches, Cafe mokkamokka, and Ryoken Tonoyashi (sp ?)- the Sansui people will tell you which one. This dinner spot provided the most delicious simple and AMPLE dinners for much less than we spent elsewhere on our 3-week trip. Definitely, we'll come back.
The walks into and around the mountains were breathtaking. We made sure to do a pre-lunch and pre-dinner walk up and down a short span of the main road.
As a ryoken, the usual pajamas provided by hotels the Sansui provided were a full kimono and jacket suitable for men and women. We wore these to the one dinner we had at Sansui - private dining room, and it was a hoot. The food was amazing, and highly traditional consisting of about a dozen small plates and 4-5 larger plates. Great value for excellent and abundant servings.
The mountains at the start of spring are beautiful. We picked a good time.
This is a retro 60s ryoken. So know that as such it has everything, including a throwback to ski resorts of that era, but misses slightly on wifi only in the lobby. Still, we met other friendly travelers all cranking into wifi and telling stories.
- Carlos (10/5): - Amazing location in the mountains. Very beautiful location and friendly staff.
- Yousef (10/5): - Exceptional Ryokan hotel experience with friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Yuri (10/5): Perfect hot spring getaway - Perfect ryokan stay! Cozy location in the mountains with lovely hot springs and super friendly staff. Some of the common areas are a bit dated but full of charm and very clean. Highly recommended!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Love the unique resort and view of the mountain. Staff were excellent and helpeful too. Directing us to the close by restaurants as we wanted a easy dinner with children. Over all it was good. Thank you
- Y (8/5): - The surrounding of the ryokan is very picturesque and peaceful. The onsens are lovely. There are gender-specific public onsens as well as private onsens that you can reserve. The ryokan itself is a bit dated though.
- Travis (10/5): An incredible stay!! - We loved, loved our stay here. The onsen was wonderful (four outdoor private, a male and female onsen, both indoor and outdoor). The breakfast was incredible and they made gluten free for my wife (celiac). (No dinner, just breakfast). They even noticed she liked lemons in her water and provided those each day. The staff was wonderful and so helpful (didn't speak much English but enough to get by!) The building interior is outdated, but not in a bad way once you get used to it. It's traditional Japanese - tea, slippers, robes, breakfast, futons (we doubled ours up to make them more comfortable) on the floor, tatami mats. In a small town with hiking nearby, only one place to eat (walking), a small morning market and other onsens. The bus comes right through town (a couple minutes from the ryokan) and can take the bus all over - transportation in Japan is on point. We had a wonderful, restful and adventurous stay! Would absolutely go back and would highly recommend if you're looking for a traditional experience.
- Marie-A. (10/5): Awesome - Awesome stay, great service, perfect location. We liked also the private onsen.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Rooms and baths were clean, staff were friendly and very helpful. We were able to ask for a vegan version of the breakfast, and they helped us find our way to our next destination.
- Ruttakan (10/5): Best Ryokan ever - Best service. Friendly and helpful staffs. Recommended. Superb
- lisa (10/5): Super leuke ervaring - Super leuke ervaring. Personeel is heel aardig.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- B.Cook (10/5): - Didn't ever check in because we didn't make it to Okuhida but they were very responsive. Thanks!
- SIU YUK (8/5): Nice and free onsen - Small family running hotel. Nice service. Dinner and breakfast taste good. There are different individual onsen for guests and free of charge. Better by drive especially in the evening.
- James (10/5): - Very helpful staff, they arranged rice bowls for us when we didn’t book dinner at the hotel and found that the only restaurant in the village was closed that night.
- Angel (10/5): - Excellent staff, the hotel room is spacious and clean. The Onsen is good size and the arrangement of private Onsen for couples or families is a great idea. it would be better if they could provide electric kettle. We enjoyed our stay very much and will recommend it.
- Chun Tim (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): Everything is very nice - -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): Good place to stay. 40km from Takayama!! - 40 km from Takayama!! If you are driving it is a very good place to stay.
- MAN FONG CANE (10/5): -
