Guest Reviews
- Jeff (10/5): - Interesting experience. There is no on-site staff, but the building is in excellent (restored) condition. You let yourself in with the door code and then you’re on your own.
The on-site restaurant is not operating, so we drove a couple miles for dinner. We made breakfast from what was on site.
Thankfully there was no noise from the railroad outside.
We’ll be back.
- Cathy (10/5): - Lyle hotel is a work in progress. I am sure as time passes they will do more to improve making it more modern. It was great to get out in the courtyard and to sit in the lobby area and just relax. I enjoyed watching the trains go by and would enjoy a better view of the trains. I would visit again as they progress.
- Linda (8/5): - My fault for not asking for more info! Because of my age the stairs were a little difficult but I made it! The bed was the highlight of my overnight stay !wonderful comfort! Also did not realize you weren’t fully open! But thanks for the amazing sleep! Also enjoyed the beautiful and thoughtful surroundings! Thank you!
- JAMES (10/5): - Very historic hotel. Manager Merika was awesome with great hospitality.
- Emily (8/5): - We never saw anyone who worked there, but we were able to get in and find everything we needed.
- Chris (10/5): - Check in and out was easy and efficient.
- Thor (6/5): A bit louder thN normal - In the past my wife and I have had very memorable experiences at the Lyle Hotel and its former restaurant.
- Nancy (10/5): Unique place to stay - This was a very comfortable, clean and a unique place to stay. They are not serving meals but I bought great Chinese food made on the spot at the local grocery store. It was kind of noisy from the trains going by on both sides of the river. The manager was great and we enjoyed knowing about the area. It is beautiful on that side of the river.
- Charles (10/5): - Historic hotel with very friendly host. We really enjoyed our stay!
- MICHELLE (10/5): Worth your money - Fun little place with friendly staff.
- Alberta (10/5): - Sooo cute ❤️ Right by the Columbia River. I think we had the whole place to ourselves 🥰. The bed was super comfy❤️
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We loved this charming vintage hotel with unique accents. The beautiful staircase leads to a floor of bedrooms and shared bathrooms. Our stay was quiet an comfortable and there was never a wait for the bathrooms. The AC in our room was ideal on the 100 degree day. Easy free parking in front of the hotel. And a quick drive across the beautiful Colombia for wine tasting or watching wind surfing in Hood River. We look forward to our next visit.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Quaint
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Share bathrooms really! Not worth the money no AC in a 90•degrees room HORRIBLE
- Jennifer (8/5): - Perfect location for visiting the Columbia Gorge scenic area. Great location for access to Catherine Creek/Coyote Wall, Horsetheif Butte, Stonehenge, Maryhill. The hotel was a cozy landing spot for two tired hikers/climbers. The beds were too firm for me, post strenuous physical activity.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful historic hotel from the railroad days.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very historic and beautifully restored small hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The charm and style of the Lyle were relaxed and friendly. The owners Richard and Trece have done a lovely job of making their guests feel at home. I loved it.
- Jay (10/5): Hotel with history and character - Great host, amazing food. You have to go up stairs to get to your rooms and bathrooms are shared, if you have traveled Europe than you should be used to this. Rains pass the hotel throughout the night, if you can make sure your window is closed, especially if you’re a light sleeper.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The location of the Lyle is right on the river, most rooms have a view. Even though there is a train near by (which did not wake me) I slept more soundly and awoke refreshed. So close to wine country how can you loose trying something unique. Thanks Richard!
- Mike (8/5): - Staff was great, enjoyed the food and the live entertainment on the patio. Room was clean and bed was comfortable. I’m going back
- Andrew (2/5): - Nothing to like...the location, everything about it should scare you😳.No parking..it’s all a lie!we had to reserve elsewhere after seeing that structure!Imaging loosing 120$..that’s how terrible it was!
- Court (10/5): - Highly recommend. The food and drinks were delish, the staff are wonderful and the place is homey. Great vibe. Feels like you’re in big house with all your fun friends.
- Sandy (10/5): - The staff was so friendly and we had a wonderful time. This place has history and comfort.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Friendly and Helpful - Nice comfy vintage feel, clean and super friendly and helpful staff! Wonderful menu, service was excellent!
- Diana D. (6/5): Nice, friendly place - We enjoyed our stay here. The staff is really friendly and welcoming. Make sure to eat while you are here. The owner is also the chef and is a fantastic cook. I had ravioli and it was delicious.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - There was no one there to let us in. There was no breakfast. Way overpriced for a shared bathroom and inadequate air conditioning. We do not recommend this hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Favorite place on the Gorge. Love the historic setting. Extremely friendly staff. Delicious home-smoked cuisine and low-key entertainment on weekends. Delicious and affordable local wines and hard cider selections. I seem to keep returning every year....
- Wayne (10/5): - Mondays and Tuesdays are the owners normal days off Because it was my birthday, Richard fixed us a birthday dinner, delicious!! We pretty much had the place to ourselves, especialy Tuesday .
- Jillian (6/5): no pride of ownership - Sadly, I cannot recommend this hotel. The restaurant was not open, despite hotels.com saying it was. The train that went by was extremely loud, like it was pretty funny how crazy loud it was. my husband and i just had to laugh. they did provide earplugs, but still woke up me up every hour. the carpet and furniture had some stains on it. There were plants in the back patio that werent planted, just sitting in their store containers on top of the ground (kinda trashy). Also, the bathroom has random toiler paper holders attached to the back of the door...why not just remove those? Seemed kinda lazy to just leave the extra TP holders on the doors, would be an easy fix. Breakfast was the most comical though. All we found was 1 english muffin in the fridge at 8am. All the granola was gone and there was no yogurt (despite the front desk stating there would be when we checked in). The fridge was full of leftover staff takeout food, old cake, costco size bricks of butter, again just seemed lazy. Why not have a cheap mini fridge for just the milk/yogurt/butter for hotel guests? Dirty dishes from guests were just left on the counter and mixed in with the clean dishes, since there was no way of knowing where to put things in the tiny kitchen area. We met 1 staff person at check-in but besides that was empty. no one at breakfast time to ask questions or about the lack of breakfast. still wondering what my hundred dollars paid for...a noisy night and an empty stomach.
- Tobue (6/5): - It had a very nice atmosphere. But, I had some large problems.
The info given said there were no check in staff after 6pm and I knew we were going to be 30-60 minutes late since we were driving from mid California. I tried to call at 3 different points in the day (left a message with first call around 9:30am), multiple times, no one answered. So I was driving 12 hours not knowing if I would be able to get a room that night. I ended up calling Expedia around 4pm, they also tried calling the property (not sure how many times) and no one answered for them either.
We arrived around 7pm, thankfully got checked in by some friendly ladies, dropped off our stuff in the small room (Shared ammenities with the entire floor. I think 2 bathrooms for all the rooms?), and went out for dinner. 10 minutes into my drive I got a call by a male staff member asking me about the message I left (The one I left earlier). I let him know that we had just checked in, and he said it would have been ok as long as we had been there before midnight.
The hotel is right beside some train tracks and they're constant through the night. I wasn't bothered by it, but I know some would be. (Also some next door neighbor yappy dogs).
Next morning, took a shower in the shared bathroom. They provide very nice products for showering, I was actually impressed. We had our lovely day in Oregon, came back around 9pm and found that our bedroom door was open. Our stuff was still there thank goodness.
- GN (10/5): - Friendly hosts and a charming place. Hope to stay there again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely Lyle Hotel! - The dinner was exceptional. Such a lovely quaint place to stay and minutes from White Salmon and a Hood River. Great price!
- Dawn R (10/5): I'll be back - Perfectly period.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Quaint Hotel, but disappointing. - We arrived a couple minutes prior to check in and the doors were locked. When we finally checked in, we were not really given much information about our stay/amenities and had to ask for information. The bathrooms were not very clean -all drains were pretty plugged with hair. Inside bar and dining area were very nice. However, the self serve breakfast of granola, tangerines and english muffins was a little confusing and not too impressive (silverware not very clean and water was warm). The back patio was definitely disappointing, with the view of the backside of building in poor shape, ground very dry with no grass, and all ashtrays were full. Can't say that we would go back anytime soon.
- Jill (8/5): - No elevator and shared bathrooms might be detractors for some people. The shared bathroom was no problem for us, but we did wish for an elevator. This is a great place that is much more like a bed and breakfast than a hotel feeling. The family who owns the place make you feel so at home.
- sally (10/5): Welcoming and charming - Comfortable room, tasty food and ample menu of wine and beer. Staff couldn't be more kind and helpful. Would stay at the Lyle Hotel again.
- Kevin (4/5): Great ambiance, terrible comfort - When we showed up, check in was great and the owners were very friendly and amiable. Had a GREAT time grabbing a drink and enjoying the live music out on the patio. Room was well kept and bathroom and shower were in good conditions. Unfortunately, once we tried to sleep things turned south. Because it was the middle of summer and there is no air conditioning, we were forced to keep the windows open all night - which was problematic given that there are freight trains rolling by about every 30 minutes throughout the night. While the hotel was kind enough to provide earplugs, this did little to help. Knowing that the trains are so loud, I feel like a window air unit or at least a box fan in the room would be provided so the windows could be kept closed to offer the chance of sleep.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Very very noisy - This hotel is right by a very active rail line, may be just 100 yard away from the line. We heard loud noise made by passing freight trains through out the night which was very uncomfortable. This is a small hotel situated in a rather beutiful small time. Hotel conditions and amenities also dont have much to say. Rooms are very old and very small. Our room had no space left after the queen bed. Wall paint was chipping off all over the second floor of hotel where we stayed. More ever our bed has one corner base broken so it was tilting on one side which made things worse. We never complained because we were quite tired after a long road trip. Overall i will never rate this hotel experience more than 2 stars.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Historic character - The Lyle is a lively little hotel with a friendly vibe. Rooms off the nearby railroad are fairly quiet. The dinner was delicious.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Awesome get away! - The owners are incredibly nice and fun people. The hotel is quant, the food is delicious and the beer is all local. Can’t ask for much more. The only reason we didn’t give all 5-stars was because my wife and I both woke up with sore backs the next day (bed was a little stiff and you can feel the springs). There’s one down side to the Lyle that’s not there fault; the Indian reservation is literally 50yrds away and there are packs of wild dogs roaming around. You only need to worry if you’re bringing your own pets but it’s a little unsettling and prevented us from exploring more.
- Suzanne (10/5): Columbia Gorge - Wonderful trip, loved the trains at night...bea utiful hotel, great food! Good people that own it. Highly recommend! Lyle WA. Is so much fun!!!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Out of the way, B&B/ - Nice place. Friendly, but not overbearing owner. LIked the sounds of trains at night.
- holly (10/5): Beautiful, clean & Friendly - This beautiful old building was a perfect getaway. We practically had the place to ourselves due to all the wildfires burning nearby. The restaurant was reasonably priced and the food excellent. I had the pot roast and my husband had the pulled pork and we shared a carafe of Hood River wine. The room was clean and very comfortable. I had to go to the lobby to plug my laptop in (had to edit the photos I took). The area is stunningly beautiful. I cannot recommend this place enough!
- Tam (10/5): Awesome old train station turned hotel! - Right from the beginning Richard and Trea ,owners of the hotel ,were very welcoming. We chose to stay here because of the idea of an old train station. They normally don't take in guests on the day we booked but they took us in anyway, no questions asked! They sat and talked with us about our travels and added input and helped us with where we were going next. Richard is a Chef also and went to a french cooking school, unfortunately we had already eaten and didn't get to eat there. It had an indoor and outdoor eating area with a great atmosphere! Rooms were fun . The washrooms and showers were conveniently located right outside our door. Just a great fun place to stay!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I love old railroad hotels. Wish we had more time to stay and explore the Columbia gorge.
- AlohaJoe (10/5): Enjoyable stay! - Had a great dinner and a very comfortable night at the hotel. Dinner in the restaurant was delicious.
- Jordan (10/5): Hospitality at its finest - Our stay at the Lyle Hotel was awesome. Richard the owner was amazing. Terrific host, brilliant chef, and great boss to his staff. Karissa and the team made everyone feel special. The rooms were a little close together and the walls a little thin but what can you expect with a hotel over 100 years old? Tied to the history of Lyle, WA. I highly recommend this hotel.
- Kathy (8/5): Hidden treasure in the Gorge - Lyle Hotel is a quaint clean comfortable old Train stop hotel along the ColumbiaGorge. The owners and staff welcome you with a personal touch. the outdoor seating area is pleasant of the bar. We were surprise by the wonderful offerings in their Restaurant. We recommend the lamb shank in with a cherry sauce, spinach and scalloped potatoes, and the brussels sprouts sautéed in sweet chili sauce . Clean and very comfortable beds offered a good nights rest. Self service granola, fruit and yogurt got us off to a nice start of exploring Horse Thief Butte and the spectacular tor of the pictographs and petroglyphs. Easy access ride to spectacular drive to MaryHill Winery and White Salmon.
- Pat (10/5): A Perfect Example of an historic European Inn/B&B - We found this place at the last minute, when all of the hotels in Hood River were either full, or too expensive during a huge brew-fest event. We were absolutely blown away with the experience! If you are looking for a place to watch TV...or have qualms about sharing a bathroom (there were many on our floor), then this isn't your cup of tea. However...if you are into taking a step into a beautifully revived slice of history, similar to the best B&Bs and rural inns in Europe, you will not be disappointed. The small bar that is part of this place has GREAT food, and a wide selection of wine and ciders. We stayed two nights, and have told everyone we know, that the view, and the short drive across the river, are well worth the "trouble" of not staying in Hood River or The Dalles.
Why stay in a cookie cutter chain hotel...when you can have a unique experience that leaves you smiling? The owners of this establishment should be very proud of their hard work. It shows!
