Guest Reviews
- Cheryl (10/5): - Good price for time of year. Room was clean. Other customers who were gathered and talking outside of room until 11pm were noisy.
- Steven (10/5): - Friendly, mellow proprietor with a cute dog
Quiet, basic, clean
- Mark (6/5): - Would not recommend!! The room was absolutely disgusting!! There was a used razor stiil in the shower along with used shampoo. The bedding had stains, the carpet was filthy, and there was so much dust on everything. We didn't even stay the night because of the filth.
- Sally (10/5): - Easy check in, friendly staff and liked that the room had both street parking and a balcony overlooking the lake.
- Bradley (10/5): - Greatest staff
- Billie (10/5): Great stay - The rooms are newer with carpet and confortavle beds. There is also lake view in some of the rooms
- Dianne (8/5): - I like how it is so peaceful.
- Jana (8/5): - Beautiful patio view of Bear Lake from room 16. Quiet location with great dining option around the corner (schnitzel sandwich!) Property is old, appeared clean, and has friendly/helpful staff. BETTER than I expected.
- Jeremy (8/5): - It was good stay no loud noise at night very quiet easy to get sleep and a convenient location. I will book here again sometime.
- james (2/5): - The innkeeper was not here when we arrived!! He was 13 miles away. The code for the room did not work!! Just a mess.
I’ve stayed over 500 places across the US and several European countries. THE WORST!!!!
How in the world did Expedia contract with this place??? You owe us!!!
- Phyllis (10/5): - We were a late check in , so they called with instructions. The information given me was clear and concise.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Clean but missing a few things! - I liked the flooring, no dirty carpet! Also had a large stainless steel sink. The pillows weren’t very fluffy but got two more that were better. No hairdryer, hangers and not a single garbage can inside, but a large receptacle outside. Bed made a lot of noise when you moved. Was not good for my neck and back. A/C worked but was very loud. Neighbors were nice and obviously lived there full-time. The lobby could use a good cleaning. A nicer fridge than most hotels.
- Bee (8/5): - It would be nice if it can upgrade more outlets for phone and other chargers.
- joe (4/5): - You really do get what you pay for. This felt like a very sleazy motel. The road to get in was nearly, impassable due to disrepair. The place was kind of unclean, and we just felt unsafe and it all felt very unkempt. The bed was horrible and the shower was terribly dirty. It was noisy from 9:30 till midnight with people knocking on the door, coming and going with no exhaust and just loud talking and loud televisions, etc, etc.
- Frances (4/5): - Staff was very polite, but the room needs to be updated. Stained carpet, towels and the bath/shower was disgusting. Couldn't sleep, the bed was horrible. Only good thing was the friendly staff.
- Moung Zhong (8/5): - I’ve stayed at this lovely little place before so I had my experiences. I don’t know why this time was different; the air had an odor smell to it, there was red gunk on the bathroom door/handle, and the sink would clog. Everything else was fine. A bit disappointed but I didn’t worry too much. Just had my expectations.
- Shiloh (6/5): - It was a cute property. I appreciated them texting me before my arrival to let me know how to get find and get into my unit. I was travelling for business, and the internet was not working very well. That was inconvenient because I had work to do when I got there and wasn't able to complete it.
- Michelle (2/5): - Very strange furnishings and smelled strange
- Captain (10/5): - My wife and I were travelling and only looking for an overnight stay with bed and bathroom. No frills needed. This was perfect and should our path ever take us this way again, we'd certainly stay there again. Great value compared to "name brand" hotels up and down the interstate.
- Laverne (10/5): - Very nice relaxed visit in a beautiful area.
- Laurie (8/5): - IT WAS NICE AND VERY QUIET
- Heather (8/5): - The room was very clean.
They say that they have free Wifi. They did not give me the password when I checked in. I had to ask for it.
- Julia (6/5): - Check in was a breeze. Furniture in room is literally falling apart. Bathroom fan extremely loud!
- Dianne (8/5): - Did not have internet. Otherwise it was a great place to stay.
- Lisa (4/5): - The doors were not very soundproof, and we could hear people talking and watching the TV next door until 2 AM. I wasn’t sure if the bedsheets had been changed as they looked wrinkled.
- Richard (6/5): - The table on thr deck was dirty. We had wipe it off with a napkin before we could use it.
We did think the bed was very comfortable!
We had to be right up to the TV to make it work. After a bit of frustration we did figure it out and were able to change channels of control the volume.
- Andrew (10/5): Barnum Hotel - Nice Mom and Pop hotel, nothing fancy and pretty much basic needs were fulfilled. Very impressed walking in everything neat and clean. Nice oversized mini fridge, beautiful balcony overlooking hwy then Bear Lake. If anything the Towels were too basic and small and some of the lights didn’t work. Would for sure stay there again.
- Donald (10/5): - Beautiful lake view!
- Karyn (10/5): - Quiet
- debbie (10/5): - Loved it. Giant room with suitable patio and great view privet with big grassy lawn
- Emma (10/5): - Amy was extremely helpful the whole time! Everyone was so nice there. It was a wonderful experience to stay. I would honestly go back over and over. Probably one of the best placed inns in minnesota too! Its about an hour from most major cities in minnesota. You get great access to everything minnesota has offer. It is a wonderful stay for just getting to know minnesota.
- Anthony (10/5): We will stay here again. - Very nice experience. Staff was friendly and helpful, room was very clean, comfortable bed, nice view.
- Alexander (4/5): - Paper walls. Couldnt sleep because I could here anything and everything on either side of my unit. Even regular conversarion sounded like they were in the room with me. Otherwise the room was clean.
- Michael (4/5): - No Housekeeping during my three day stay.
- Shelli (10/5): - Verynice
- Chelsie (10/5): - The room was alright clean. Bed was kinda stained, and bathroom was dirty. An service kinda sucked.
- Tracey (4/5): - It is a very old property and although it was clean, carpet very stained, not even a bedspread, loose and hanging sheets, no second ( ie: chain lock) for door, furniture all over the place. Just not put together.
- Stanley (8/5): - It's a perfectly fine place to stay.
- Holly (10/5): - Very nice hotel,. Friendly service, would stay again
- William (8/5): - Pleasant basic motel w soothing lake view. Very clean.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Overnight up north - Overpriced but clean and quiet. Looked to be recently updated. A funky driveway to rooms located below
- Syen (10/5): One night in Barnum. - The manager was very friendly which made us feel really welcome.
- Jana (6/5): - Stay was fine for our purposes. Would have preferred a mirror and more towels
- Leslee (4/5): - Needs a deep cleaning and some updating. Broken furniture in room.
- Kathleen (10/5): - Very clean.
- Sara (8/5): - Check in was to start at 3pm, after calling 3 times we got a call back at 3:45 the he was on his way. there was another person waiting to check in as well.
- Rachel (2/5): - This rated among our top worst hotels ever.
- Deb (8/5): Good for the caretake but bad for the owners - It would help if the owners would give the caretaker money to do some improvements to the rooms and the outside parking lot as well as other things that need to be done otherwise it is a very nice and quiet place to stay and the caretaker is friendly and tries to accommodate as much as he can with what he has available.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not worth it. - I will never stay at this place again. The parking lot was dark. Absolutely no lighting in the parking lot or by the doors. There was a block of wood holding up the toilet. The sheets were a dark purple and had crusty stains on it. The comforter was also dirty. The comforter was very old and very used. The only lock on the door was the lock on the door knob. The rug was a sample of carpet. The air conditioner did not get cold. No ice machine. The furniture was from a garage sale. The pillows were very cheep. Not worth the $128 per night that I was charged. The soda machine was not working. It just sucked. There are rules posted in the room. There is a large bucket of cigarette butts right outside the door. The wash rags said RAG on them. The rags looked like they had been used to clean the bathroom for the last 30 years.
- Julie (10/5): - A little outdated but our stay was comfortable, no issues. Staff was great! Room was clean. We had fridge, microwave, air, coffee, basic cable tv. No continental breakfast. We would stay there again.
- Heather (8/5): - We stayed in a two bedroom cabin. Very nice. Beds were comfortable and plenty of space. Only complaint is water had a sulfer smell, but otherwise great. Would stay again.
- Ruth (10/5): - Instant hot water! Beautiful view from deck. Sufficiently large room, bed and furniture in very good condition. We were very comfortable, even spent a day lounging inside. It is very near Interstate 35 and the Lazy Bear restaurant is almost next door, has great food. It's not a luxury motel, but very clean, has several outlets, good AC, coffee maker, refrigerator, TV, long bar to hang clothes, hair dryer. We enjoyed our stay!
- Jennifer (6/5): - The description of the room (on Expedia) stated that there was wi-fi, there was not. The main lamp in the room was broken and the fitted sheet kept coming off the side of the bed. The bathroom light/vent made a very loud rattling noise.
- Larry (10/5): - Great rate for a nice clean room. Two cute little towns with old fashioned diners. Lovely lake view from balcony.
- Lori (10/5): - The owner was very accommodating. Very pleasant. WILL stay again & spread the word
- David (2/5): - The area was generally very pleasant and quiet. However, the water had a terrible sulfur odor. This is a known problem in the Barnum area, but the staff member who checked us in didn't mention it. On our first day, the air conditioning didn't work initially and needed staff attention. Then the next day, the temperature dropped drastically and required the heat to be utilized, but that didn't work either and there wasn't a staff member to address the problem. All of the dishes/utensils we attempted to use were dirty and needed to be washed before we could use them. Overall, the stay was very disappointing for the cost of the cottage.
- ronald (8/5): - Personable staff, very functional, no wifi so I read a book. Good view of the lake. Friendly and helpful guests.
- Kimberly (8/5): - Quiet and clean.
- Randy (6/5): -
- Alex (10/5): - The property backs up to a beautiful view of a lake. The manager was super nice and helpful. It was clean and stocked with a decent bed and full shower supplies. I definitely recommend this property if youre in town.
- Michelle (8/5): Great lil' Place - This is a great place to stay. Clean rooms, comfy bed and a great view of the lake. Super quiet. Reasonable rates too. Lazy Bear restaurant is within walking distance. I would definitely stay again.
- Joy (6/5): - Person next to us was up making noise until 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning.
- Mike (8/5): - I liked the location and price.
- Aurora (10/5): - Awesome
- haley (10/5): - i really appreciated how sweet the person who checked us in was! the rooms are adorable! would for sure stay here again!!
- Alexis (10/5): - I loved how quaint the cottage was, staying there was super comfortable and welcoming everything was very clean. All necessities were on hand including stove, dishes, microwave, coffee pot, fridge, TV with cable, Wi-Fi, bath/shower nice beds , heat air conditioning! If you’re a minimalist and can enjoy the simple things this small town cottage is perfect for a weekends away!
- Rick (10/5): Great Place - Very friendly staff. Clean rooms. Awesome views
- Randy (8/5): - Conveniently located off US 35, this room offered a firm comfortable bed and basic amenities.
- Gordon (2/5): - What was unique is that the hot water in shower was dangerously hot, the breeze from under the front door was refreshing, the dime store lock on the front door needs replacement, no internet reception and for $145 / night it was exceptionally over priced. I realize things are tough for the business but in my opinion Expedia has some explaining for not monitoring what they represent. Embarrassing incompetence.
- Blaine (4/5): - No hot water in the shower!
- Dianne (2/5): - The carpet was very dirty stains all over it .Hot water was not very hot .Sheets had brown brown spots on them . the room needs a very good update . the drive way going down into the room needs new pavement . Would never stay there again. The man in the office was very nice that was the only thing going for that place . no WIFI
- stevensaundra (4/5): - this property is nothing like what advertised small OLd OLD and basic rat hole people live there,,,,,,,,only good was when guy seen my reaction he didnt charge me for not staying
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was clean and the staff very friendly.
quiet nice fire pit
I just was very dissappointed there were not any places you could eat inside..all drive thru OR one place was extremely expensive 17.95 for a hamburger. We had to drive all the way to Cloquet to a Perkins. NOT convenient
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I liked the big bathtub, comfortable beds, and large TV screen that worked immediately (having stayed in many hotels, this is not something that I take for granted). The greeter was friendly enough but I paid in cash and was almost given the wrong change. To compare: the next night my husband and I stayed in a b and b for the same price. While the house was historic and recently redone (fresher appearing than the hotel), it had no bathtub and a smaller TV that did not work initially upon our arrival. Overall, I was more satisfied with Northwoods Inn than with the b and b.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great mom and pa motel! Very comfortable bed and pillow! Very pleasant view while I sat at the small table by the window. It was nice to have a refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. I plan on staying there again. The motel was a little rough around the edges but I did not mind. Small motels don't have the money for major repairs but the room was very clean.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The price. motels are getting too expensive.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The rooms are very old. Spider webs and a spider in the room. Floors looked kinda new. But wall beds need update. I wouldn’t stay if I didn’t have a choice.
- Bruce (10/5): - Excellent value compared with area competition. Clean and comfortable room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Staff were very friendly and the room was clean and cared-for.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This is a wonderful old style motel, but with clean and updated rooms. Newer carpeting, tiles and paint- some newer and some older furniture. The highlight is the nice deck in back with lovely views of the lake. Walls are thick and noise from next rooms or highway are no problem. The bed was comfortable enough, and tv, microwave, fridge, AC were all in good working order.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - A beautiful lake tucked right behind the property was easy on the eyes. The gentleman at the front desk was very kind and welcoming. A quaint motel with 2 cute little cottages on either side. It's a bit outdated, but what do you expect in the midst of a very small town in the woods. It was clean up to standard and did the trick for the one night. The only complaint I'd have is the rate I paid for the particular night I stayed. It was overpriced. I paid less the following eve in the heart of a major city with all the perks.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Blanket covered in dog hair. Everything stained, broken, hair in tub, only 1 towel in room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very very quiet easy walk to a great restaurant
- Susan A (8/5): Clean and comfortable room for a quick overnight - When I arrived at the hotel, I found the door to the office locked with instructions to call two different phone numbers in order to advise the management that I would like to check in. Understandable with this being a family-owned and run property in a small town, the manager came right away to check me in when he knew I was there. I was glad to be able to check in early so I wouldn't have to disturb them with a late-night arrival after spending the day with my son's family!
Room was clean and had everything I needed for a quick, overnight stay.
My only issue is that I was not charged the same room rate as the one I reserved on-line. I paid $99 plus tax; my reservation was for $89 plus tax. Should have checked my reservation to ensure I wasn't being over-charged, but the convenience of being able to check in a little early is worth the extra $10 to me.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - It was a bit of a dump. Very old. Poor security. Poor carpet. Poor parking lot.
- Dina (4/5): - Fairly clean but tables had a lot of dust on them. Room had a smell.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Upkeep was great, friendly on-site staff, calm and relxing.
- DonnaLouden (4/5): - Room was clean, beds were comfy. Property is not well taken care of. Did not offer breakfast or even coffee, just small pot in room with coffee for 2 cups. Definitely not worth the price they charge per night more along the $60.00 to maybe $70.00 per night.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The place was fine. It’s fairly close to a busy highway so noise was a factor.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff was very friendly and excited to help! We would absolutely come back and stay. The price was a bit high, but it still was worth the stay! Thanks!
- Gretchen (4/5): - Just what I said previously. the cost was 138$, it should have been half of that. Carpets stained, noisy, seemed clean, heat didnt work.
- Louise (2/5): - Old motel, outdated rooms, smelly room, and outrageously high price, I would never stay here again.....
- Louise (4/5): - Way overpriced, parking lot crowded with machinery, old paneling, musty smell, old carpeting and bedding, stayed only because the bathroom and bedding seemed clean, and no where else to stay. The $129 a night seemed like a rip off to travelers....I’d would never recommend it, I’d drive the extra mile anywhere else.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Beds were comfortable but the entire facility is in desperate need of some major TLC.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It wasn't on a lake, as suggested in the ad. The external condition wasn't great. However, it was neat inside.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - We liked that it was clean and available at a price less than the Duluth market offered on a weekend.
If the patio doors were open, Hwy 35 noise was always there. "Lake view" was questionable.
- James (8/5): - Nice overnight stay going home from Canada. Homemade bread and fresh roasted coffee a block away. Wine store 1/2 mile away. Poor Gary’s pizza 5 miles away in Moose Lake. Really really really good pizza and a patio on our room to eat and drink supper.
- Katherine (8/5): Good - Its older place but clean and quite
- Verified traveler (10/5): Peaceful Rest! - Thank you!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Don’t be fooled by the plain, run-down look from the road. We were pleasantly surprised by our room. We had a nice view of the lake in the distance from the small balcony. Bed was comfortable, good looking furniture and clean carpets The only thing missing was a towel hook in the bathroom. The lady at the check-in area was very nice and professional, even though the check-in area needed an update and was a tad untidy. Overall, much more pleasant than you might think by the exterior.
