- Jambo_Lambo (10/5): Beautiful property in the country - Just arrived today. Check in was smooth and the young woman at reception was professional and efficient. I had dinner at the hotel and ordered the roast chicken with mushroom sauce and garlic mashed with asparagus. It arrived fresh and hot. Chicken was tender and tasty, and the mashed and asparagus were good too. Hari attended to me, provided excellent service and was lovely. I look forward to the rest of my stay. The grounds look beautiful and my (luxury) room is bright and spacious (decor is a bit dated). I was welcomed to the courtyard by a lovely, super friendly grey cat (apparently the neighbour’s cat). I love cats ( have three at home) so I was thrilled to be greeted by this vocal, sweet cat, who followed me everywhere.

They had a courtyard room separate to the main building, which was perfect. Got the wowcher. Added the extra nights directly with the hotel. It didn't disappoint. The staff were so helpful, the room was fantastic and the hotel grounds are a total delight. The breakfast choice is excellent. I took a walk around the grounds and the lovely hotel cat came with me. Would recommend this wonderful hotel

Das Hotel selbst war wunderschön innen und außen gestaltet. Wunderbares Essen. Einziger Minuspunkt: Es war wohl zu wenig Personal da, das Essen zog sich lange hin, so dass wir die anderen 2 Tage woanders abends gegessen haben. Beim Frühstück war es ähnlich, alles ein bißchen langsam. Zum Glück hatten wir Zeit :-I Parken auch kein Problem, großer Parkplatz vorhanden.

Room stocked with tea coffee hot chocolate and biscuits. It was quite hard to get to the nearest town as had to go down the side of the road.

I booked this hotel for my partner's birthday, and we encountered so many issues that ruined the stay completely. Firstly, it is advertised as a dog friendly hotel, but it is not clear on their website that there is a pet charge. We were almost allocated a room that could not accommodate our dog. The room was not clean. There was half eaten food left in the room and crumbs on the floor. There was a light in the room that could not be switched off making it difficult to sleep. The advertised dog walks on their map were not accessible. The room service in the evening took a very long time. The room service for breakfast, that we organised with the reception staff, didn't even bother to turn up! When you book a hotel, the bare minimum you expect is a clean room and a good night's sleep. With the Barnett Hill Hotel you don't get either!

- farfromhomeReading (8/5): Lovely setting - I've stayed at this hotel before years ago. I liked the plenty of parking and the gardens and foyers of the hotel are beautiful. The young man checking me in was pleasant and helpful. My room was v expensive £170 - (no breakfast)it was nice and roomy and the bedding and toiletires were lovely. It was not though in the central hotel. I was disappointed not to get a bath for that money as pictures showed one, and the hairdryer could not be found. Next time I would not spend the extra for a kingsize room. My sat nav suggested the hptel was earlier than it was - so do drive on a bit - roads are very windy.

Atmosphere was quiet as hotel was not full, grounds are nice to walk around Our garden room was nice apart from the fire safety lighting in the room that cannot be switched off or dimmed and remained on all night so sleeping with the lights on is not possible. So we had to be changed rooms, along with the Hurd of elephants above us constantly slamming doors. Value for money id say this is closer to a 3 star ⭐ hotel not a 4. Everything looked clean, but if you look closer you can see that this would not be 4 star level of quality. Amenities are limited, spa is very limited and the offerings are not that different to high street offerings. Service was lacking, slow and forgetful. I would not recommend this location as an outstanding stay more of a convenience.

They made our day the most magical day, and Carla, our wedding planner, worked so hard to make sure everything was perfect for us. Their attention to detail was insane and the team on the day ensured it was a seamless and stress-free day for us and our families. Couldn't recommend them enough - thank you Barnett Hill!!

Not so much didn't like but felt the room we had could do with a re-fresh. Bathroom was bijou but perfectly adequate. However the basin tap was such that it was impossible to fill a kettle!
- nnella123 (6/5): Lovely setting, with a few small improvements - We recently visited the restaurant at Barnett Hill Hotel and overall had a pleasant experience, with a few areas that could be improved. The grounds were lovely for the children to explore, and we enjoyed drinks on the terrace in the sunshine, which made for a very relaxed start to the evening. There were a few used cigars on the ground beneath our table which seemed easy for staff to miss, but it slightly detracted from an otherwise nice setting. Service was friendly overall. The maître d’ stood out as particularly professional and attentive, anticipating what we needed and when. Other members of the team were polite but seemed less experienced and didn’t always read the table quite as well. We had booked the main restaurant but were given the grill menu. We were also seated alone in a rather dark restaurant room while the adjoining bar grill area had noticeably better lighting and atmosphere. In hindsight, we would have appreciated being offered the option to dine there instead. The food was enjoyable, though the presentation wasn’t quite what we expected from a two AA rosette venue. Some dishes, such as burgers and sharing items, were served on quite small plates which made them feel a little cramped. Larger plates or platters would elevate the presentation. Overall, a lovely setting with good service at its best, but a few small improvements in atmosphere, communication and presentation could make the experience feel more polished.

- Parish (7/5): It was ok for the place it is, just few things let it down - Breakfast was OK but over priced Tv connection was poor, and cleniness wasn't up to scratch for a 4 star hotel house keeping needs reviewing as took to long to come and change stuff and pick up dinner tray from the night before! Wasn't collected till late afternoon so was outside room all that time, food wasn't cooked to right standard ie.(steak was still mooing) when ordered medium rear, and not a lot of choice on menu.

Excellent selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes. Staff were so lovely and friendly, would highly recommend and will definitely be back again. 5 Star all round. - La-Viajera971 (10/5): Dog's Holiday - A fabulous stay at Barnett Hill Hotel. My first visit. The house is beautiful and full of history. Gardens and house were immaculate. Beautiful lawns. We travelled with two dogs who were well catered for and we were all made to feel very welcome. A friendly and professional team of staff, lovely room with big bath tub and Temple Spa products. Wonderful afternoon tea!

- BSwan_11 (10/5): Fantastic stay from start to finish - My partner and I booked the Barnett Hill Hotel because we love the Alexander Hotel Collection and were not disappointed. Our stay was fabulous from start to finish: we were warmly welcomed at check-in and given a very nice room, which had all the amenities. Breakfast was delicious and catered well for vegetarians. Dinner was the highlight of our stay: the staff was extremely helpful and could not do enough to help, anticipating our every need. The food was perfectly cooked and hot and the recommended wines went really well with our food choices. The ambiance is very relaxing and elegant and the hotel is in an ideal location to walk the Surrey Hills. Definitely recommend it.

The staff were so responsive and helpful with a slight issue we had and came back with a very productive solution quickly.
- Tourist762Cal (6/5): Disappointing - This is the 3rd Alexander group hotel we’ve stayed in - if it had been the first, we wouldn’t have tried others. I cannot fault the friendliness of the staff, especially the warm greeting, and the building is stunning, but it was not the luxury stay we were looking forward to. A few points: Breakfast – hugely disappointing and not the usual Alexander breakfast, despite the menu on the table being the same as in the other hotels. Very much help yourself, involving many trips to and from the buffet table as a lot was missing and attention to details lacking. No bircher muesli, no yoghurt, no winter berries, no fruit aside from rather sad bowls with slices of melon and 3-5 grapes in each, no marmalade, no butter (I actually went to the kitchen fridge to get some myself as couldn’t find anyone), a machine to make coffee yourself, not ‘served to table’ (I asked for fresh ground but apparently they do not have cafetieres – the machine coffee is unpleasant), insulated hot water jug for tea (warm, not boiling), no English breakfast tea, 3 (very mini) croissants the first morning, 1 (to share presumably!) the 2nd, with a 15 minute wait if we wanted more, juices definitely not fresh – the contrast with the wonderfully fresh juices served at the Alexander Hotel couldn’t have been more apparent, mugs were dirty – picked up 3 before a 4th was clean. Cooked breakfast 1st morning was mostly good, but one very tiny egg, hash brown full of grease, & I could count the baked beans (swimming in a sea of juice). 2nd morning, avocado on muffin – heavily salted and rather unpleasant. Table decoration: dead leaves, some hanging on to life. Evening meal – very restricted… basically sandwiches, burger £21 (chips £6 extra), steak & chips, fish & chips. Passion fruit martini – first time I’ve had it with a slice of orange floating on top (the next night, the fab local pub managed it with passion fruit so not sure why the hotel cannot do so). Room – lovely views, very comfortable bed, but noisy air con unit which went on and off all night making for a very disturbed night, cracked window pane, a sink with no plug (just avoided dropping a ring into it), shower is meant to be a pressure shower but a ½ inch turn and it’s boiling so cannot turn it to full pressure. Car park was a dark walk back and I hurt my ankle tripping on a drain. Gardens are beautiful and incredibly well looked after. Overall, just not what we’d expect for the amount we paid and the fabulous experiences at the other two hotels in the group. On check out, receptionist was sorry to hear I was disappointed, but no attempt to write down what was wrong so didn’t go into detail and I have no confidence this wasn’t just dismissed. Sad to have to say, I wouldn’t recommend – this was a precious and much needed (pricey) break that disappointed
- NickW46 (4/5): Fawlty Towers, if Manuel was running it - Fawlty Towers. Stayed here with family. Room was absolutely tiny and had no bottled water despite the welcome photocopy saying there would be both still and sparkling in the room. There was a fire / security alarm blaring outside our room, which had a panel with a "silence alarm" button, which I used. Upon informing reception they could not have been less interested. And when leaving 18 hours later it was still going off. Clueless bar staff - when asked what red wine was available by the glass, she just started pulling bottles off the shelf and reading the label. Our "prosecco reception" for 50 of us, involved being crammed into the bar with a bunch of other poor patrons, no one poured the wine so we had to help ourselves. Similarly at dinner, one glass was poured and then wait staff disappeared, having moved all the wine off the tables... odd. Food was incredibly average. The "beef" was some kind of reconstituted stew accompanied by lumo-green mash which claimed to include some kind of garlic but tasted of plain old mash. However, the piece-de-resistance was breakfast. Nowhere to sit as they refused to clear any tables - patrons ended up clearing tables themselves. The included "continental breakfast" had none of the promised fruit, yoghurt or bircher muesli and ran out of pastries by 930 (on a Sunday). So you were paying for toast, and your choice from a Kellogg's Variety Pack. Anyone ordering cooked food had to wait 30-40 minutes. Zero proactivity from staff - patrons had to ask for more coffee beans, so the coffee machine would work, more milk for the coffee machine, milk for the Kellogg's. Any questions around a timeline for hot food, the missing pastries, some / any fruit and help clearing tables was met with silence and a shrug. That said - it is a stunning house, the room was clean and the shower was good. Just don't expect anything resembling "service".

From the moment I arrived, the peaceful setting and beautiful grounds made it feel like a real escape from the city. Waking up to the greenery and quiet surroundings each day was incredibly relaxing. The room was comfortable, clean, and well-appointed, and it felt like a calm place to rest after full days of meetings and activities. What really made the stay special, though, was the warmth and attentiveness of the staff — everyone was friendly, welcoming, and genuinely helpful throughout my stay. I also enjoyed the food, especially breakfast, which was consistently good and served in a lovely setting. Overall, my three days at Barnett Hill were both restful and memorable, and I would happily return for either work or leisure.
- Ksandiford (2/5): Disappointing Christmas Stay – Service Fell Well Below Expectations - We stayed at Barnett Hill over the Christmas period as a family and were extremely disappointed by the overall experience, particularly given the premium pricing and four-star rating. There were multiple service failures during what should have been a well-managed festive stay. Food provision for children was poor and inappropriate, and communication around allergens was unclear and concerning, creating a genuine health and safety risk. Overall service levels fell significantly below what was advertised and reasonably expected. What compounded the experience further was the hotel’s response to our complaint. After a long delay, the reply was dismissive in tone, focused more on internal reflections than acknowledging the actual impact on our family. Compensation was rejected outright, with no meaningful recognition of the distress caused or the cumulative effect of the issues experienced. For a four-star hotel, particularly over Christmas, we expected far higher standards of care, communication, and accountability. Unfortunately, neither the stay nor the handling of the complaint reflected those standards. We would not recommend Barnett Hill for families during peak periods unless significant improvements are made in service delivery, food provision, and customer care.
- RobTPO (4/5): A poor experience - A pretty terrible stay. I arrived at 810pm and the kitchen, which is advertised as open until 830pm was already closed. I had to order Uber Eats which arrived at nearly 10pm. And then the night manager thought it would be a good idea to start moving tables and chairs around in a meeting g room 10m from my room between 11pm and midnight. I had to tell him to get a grip in my underwear. Won’t be staying again.

A kettle and two cups were provided but NO tea, Coffee or milk...that is unforgivable in a hotel of this level! On arrival, we mentioned the room was cold, and there was no heat at all in bathroom. A plug-in heater was delivered, so good service! Bathroom was OK, although shower controls were difficult to operate. The breakfast was mediocre and inconvenient as it had to be carried from one room, across a corridor, to another dining area. Staff were very pleasant so no complaints... As already stated, our room was not touched after the first night of a two night stay. (It was over Christmas, but to be charged full price with no service was a bit much!) As two 77 year olds, on arrival we were told our room (No 21) was on the second floor, with no lift. Then the access to our room was up a further two steep stairs (see photo). On leaving the room, the heavily sprung door tended to push us down the two stairs...really dangerous for elderly people. (Very Fawlty Towers!)
- jow376 (10/5): Wonderful Wedding Venue - We chose Barnett Hill on an exclusive basis for our wedding. Zsolt and his team absolutely knocked it out the park and really looked after us from when the bridal party arrived on Friday afternoon to when we left on Sunday morning. During the planning process we were helped by Liz and then Kate who made sure all the details were worked through and everything was ready for us. The mansion house is absolutely stunning and looked extra special with the Christmas decorations and lights, which were complimented by the beautiful flowers and added decor. The Garden room for the wedding breakfast had drapes and fairy lights added and looked magical. We were lucky to be able to make some of the late autumn colour for photos in the beautiful gardens. Zsolt and his team worked exceptionally hard all day - a big shout out to Eloise who still had a smile on her face at 1.30am. The guests all commented how great the dinner was and the service throughout the meal was very attentive. The guest rooms were all very comfortable and we will definitely be back to enjoy an overnight stay. Also a big thank you to Zsolt for helping with the sparkler exit!! We are so pleased we chose Barnett Hill for our wedding. We would 100% recommend it as a venue. Thank you Zsolt and your team for ensuring that our day was everything that we wanted and more.
- Paul (6/5): I love this hotel , but it needs serious input in a lot of areas - A stunning building, shame about the greenhouses, look dangerous and in a state of disrepair a shame as you could grow all you produce on site I stay here a lot over the past 4 years , and there’s alway a lack of staff wile in bar , also the bar is so bright and why is it on so many occasions it’s so cold ! A fire that’s not alight it’s very uncomfortable to eat in there , as for that magnificent restaurant with the amazing wood paneling!!! Who decided to hang the most hideous paper into the paneling, a disgraceful decision! Cold and again a lack of warmth, this restaurant should be more busy then I have seen over the years , sorry about my input but it needs to be looked into especially that restaurant

When we arrived there were only 5 cars in the car park and only 4 cars at 10pm. So the hotel wasn't even half full. Felt £50 was unreasonable.

- ciarant670 (10/5): Warmly Christmas Atmosphere with Attentive Staff - I was gifted an afternoon tea and visited with my partner and went in with no expectations. It was exceptional. From the Christmas themed sweet treats and the scones being beautifully baked and having so much filling. The atmosphere within the hotel had a great Christmas vibe and all staff were so attentive, warm and friendly to our needs. Would definitely recommend to other couples and families.

The interior and exterior are stunning, very beautiful, impressive that has been there since the 1900s , so a compliment is very well preserved and gorgeous, the staff friendly and kind, food delicious , generous breakfast and personalised which is incredible , room clean , they pleased me with with special and important requests . I'll definitely come back the room heating didn't work ,but they solved it, giving us some useful solutions it did work, which honestly was good. And the shower water was too hot 🔥 😆
- janegO8157YD (10/5): WOW what an amazing 2 days we had a Barnett Hill Hotel - We held a 2 day corporate meeting at Barnett Hill and the level of service we received was incredible. Jolt and his team were attentive, super professional and friendly. They could do enough for us to make our meeting a success. They handle last minute changes with ease and were super accommodating. From the moment i (the meeting planner) arrived i was introduced to Jolt, he showed me up to our meeting room and went through the preference sheet to make sure he had all the details needed. He was on hand to make sure we had everything in the room and showed us how the AV worked and the magnetic walls for putting flip charts up. The meeting room had everything we needed. The service of tea & coffee was impeccable, the food was delicious and the cheese straws in the afternoon were divine. We were well fed throughout the 2 days. Jolt is such a warm friendly person and every time i saw him in the corridor he would stop to check everything was ok and have a little chat with me. Its the little touches that make this hotel a great place to have a meeting or event. The hotel bedrooms had everything you need in them and the beds are comfy. The grounds of the hotel are stunning and there are lots of walks and trails for walking and running. We will definitely be returning to Barnett Hill Hotel and look forward to staying again in the future.

The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making it ideal for a relaxing getaway or a fun-filled day together. Most of the staff are incredibly kind, attentive, and eager to help, which adds to the overall pleasant experience. However, the receptionist’s attitude was noticeably unfriendly, which slightly detracted from an otherwise enjoyable visit. Despite that, the positive energy from the rest of the team more than made up for it. If you're looking for a family-friendly destination with great service, this place is definitely worth considering.
