Cynic43 (10/5): Delicious Food - New Menu - Heard there was a new menu being launched today, so decided to treat ourselves - we have not been disappointed. The menu caters for many tastes including, vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. Reasonably priced food which is delicious, well presented, ample and served with a smile. The cozy fire in the lounge is just a bonus to the ambience. Definitely worth a visit.

Christopher (10/5): - A very warm welcome, friendly staff all across the hotel. Our dog was made to feel very special. Our room was a great size, with a big comfy bed and a good sized shower room. We also received a dog box, with towel, poop bags and some treats which was a lovely touch. The pub at the back of the hotel was very charming, and served an amazing dinner. Breakfast was also very good quality, a self service style but also could have items cooked on request. Location was perfect for the drive between England and Scotland, not too far from the motorway. Good green space at hotel for our dog too. Nothing.

Hartmut (8/5): Eine tolle Unterkunft in Schottlands höchst gelegenem Hotel - Das Hotel stammt aus dem 16. Jahrhundert. Unser Zimmer war aber wohl gerade renoviert worden und in einem Topzustand. Einziger Kritikpunkt waren die beiden eng aufeinander folgenden Zugangstüren, die mit einem sehr strammen Türschließer versehen waren. Beim Check In mussten wir erst etwas nach der Klingel suchen, dann klappte das Einchecken aber problemlos und schnell. Im Restaurant gibt es eine angemessene Auswahl an Speisen, das Hühnchencurry ist sehr zu empfehlen. Der Frühstücksraum befindet sich direkt neben dem Gastraum. Das Angebot ist umwerfend, Es gibt alles, was man sich vorstellen kann. Die warmen Speisen werden frisch zubereitet, der Kaffee war gut und die Mitarbeiterin sehr freundlich. Wir haben uns im Hopetoun Arms sehr wohl gefühlt. Die Parkmöglichkeiten an der Straße sind sehr begrenzt.

657nikkig (10/5): Delicious homemade meals in a cosy, family-friendly setting. - A warm, welcoming, family-run business. We went to the Hopetoun without a reservation, and sat in the main lounge area which was very cosy with a well-tended open fire. The back bar is incredibly dog-friendly (treats for all!) and the full menu is served in there, which is a bonus. We tried out the new menu, which has a great offering for vegetarians, including one of the board specials. Everything is freshly prepared and homemade - and it really shows that it's created with heart! We enjoyed the venison and chorizo chilli, and the pheasant supreme was absolutely delicious. Our 3yo daughter polished off the feshly battered and crispy kids' fish and chips, and we were treated to kind, considered service throughout. Prices are reflective of a rural hotel, with everything homemade, and we were happy with our bill. We'd recommend giving this great new menu a go and to embrace this small, independent gem in the middle of the stunning Southern Uplands.

ChapInAKilt (10/5): Cosy, very comfortable.. a joy! - Really comfy big bed, lovely room, great hearty food (enjoyed the pheasant), friendly helpful team (thanks Sarah, Rab Co.). What more can one want!? As the team say: middle of nowhere, historic building and small town, superb for walking, breaking journeys and discovering an area of Scottish heritage. Nothing 'cheesy' here, the decor and food is done with care and love. Finish the evening in late autumn and winter in front of the open fire on the sofa with a dram. As Rab says: a snowy winters night, with a dram, the fire roaring, passing time with like-minded old and new friends! Heaven. Summer, outside under the long Scottish light nights, the same. First stay at Hopetoun, certainly not the last. I have found our two 'go-to' havens and the short distance from the m'way helps one find peace from a journey. My French family will love it here too. 695VeronicaB (10/5): A great little overnight stay in an historic inn, within a characterful village & lovely scenery - We stayed at the Hopetoun Arms overnight on the way to Skye last month. We had a warm welcome on a rainy afternoon, a lovely room with its own vestibule, (where we could sit and have tea and coffee) and a great evening meal in the bar - the fish, chips & mushie peas were excellent. The beds were comfy and the bathroom spacious & well equipped - think it was Room One. Breakfast the following morning was plentiful - we had "the full Scottish". We'd definitely return and maybe spend more than an overnight if possible. Leadhills has so much history and character, plus the surrounding area is beautiful, remote-feeling and looks good for cycling and walking. Thank you to All at Hopetoun for a great little stay.

The tv also worked intermittently which they knew about. So we paid full price for a room they knew had issues?! That aside, cleanliness was pretty poor and the bed mattress had seen better days. rabandted (10/5): Old lead mining area stay - We like to spend some time elsewhere before we have a week in the Lakes and this year we went to this village in remote Borders area in Scotland for a couple of nights. It’s a really friendly hotel with good pub type food. Lovely big room and huge bathroom! Locally there is the little railway running through the old lead mine country, and a bonkers Teedytown which kids will love.

James (8/5): This hotel could benefit by linking up with Wanlockhead Lead Mining Centre - pure gold! - Although a traditional style building the room I was in had been refurbished to a high standard. For my purposes, the location was ideal - I had booked on to a Gold Panning course at Wanlockhead. I was also able to squeeze in 9 holes of golf at the nearby course which is in the midst of a club house refurbishment. I would like to see a closer link with the Gold Panning courses as I would certainly return but would welcome a discounted joint venture rate.

Between us we had a pork dish, a lamb dish, a chicken dish and a duck dish. There were plenty other options including pub classics and what we had was really tasty as well as being a decent portion. Good value for money and very efficient service given how busy it was and that was a staff shortage! Would highly recommend.

Anita37 (10/5): A place with character - Old school pub, lodge with restaurant. Stayed for a night. Our room was a good size, clean well equipped and had character. Parking was across the road. Restaurant was fairly basic but did the job, same with breakfast. What made the place for us though was the owner Rab who we spent a very pleasant evening with whilst enjoying a beer or two. We had a right good time! Be sure to ask him about the hotels connection to Prince Charles when you stay!
Gary (9/5): A quiet stopover en-route further north/south. - Breakfast is a basic, hot and cold buffet style breakfast. Wouldn't advise go down for breakfast too late as hot food stops being cooked. Location is very much off the beaten track, but would not advise driving those roads after dark, if one isn't familiar with them. Staff were very helpful and accomodating. The road to the hotel, especially the back road to Leadhills from the south.
Margaret (9/5): Lovely old hotel, very comfortable - Lovely old hotel with lot of history and character, we had twin room under eaves, very comfy beds, huge bathroom but shower bit temperamental..hallway with tea facilities. Dinner was exceptional but unfortunately breakfast wasn't as good as previous stay..toast only part done, pre cooked limited hot selection, but cold plates. Was fine just not great. Overall a lovely stay. Breakfast not brilliant..was just ok.

Karen (8/5): A cosy inn in a quiet rural spot. - Leadhills is a lovely location and The Hopetoun Arms is a great, traditional inn. The rooms are homely and the staff were very friendly. I would certainly book again when in the area.
Kevin (10/5): Wonderful. A gem of a hotel! Cannot compliment enough. - We stayed for one night only on this occassion, it is the first time we have stayed in the Lowther Hills. The location is breathtaking and the hotel is bathed in history and character. The proprieters were exceptionally friendly and knowledgable. Enjoyed a long and very interesting chat with Rab at the bar on our arrival. The staff were all extremely helpful. The bedroom was wonderful and the peace and quiet was exactly what we needed to decompress from 5 busy days in London. The area around is one of the most glorious and isolated areas in Southern Scotland, with excellent walking opportunities (we did not have time though, on this occassion, to do any real walking). Points of interest abound, the museum and Cafe at Wanlockhead is well worth the visit. We stayed for dinner before we left - the Kitchen and the service was excellent. We will be back before long. We can wholeheartedly recommend the Hopetoun Arms. Nothing
