• ifhod (9/5): Great place for hardcore Japanese hospitality - Extraordinary food. Real Japanese ryokan. Strict, flawless, impressive. Location is difficult to reach. Lots of stairs to climb. Parking limited.

• Charles (8/5): A detour but worth it - It was a relaxing, traditional stay away from big cities. The room was very large and we appreciated that. The onsen was great and you can book a private onsen which was ideal for us. Location took an hour from Yamagata. When we were in Zao there was very little to do and most businesses were closed (outside of skiing season). The dinners were very good and very traditional, the breakfast was difficult for non-japanese people. A lot of pickled veg, smoked fish but good to get to understand traditional Japan.

This was critical for the one member of our party who is trans. Staff were incredibly kind, efficient and effective. The dinner and breakfast will forever be two of our most memorable meals. Beautiful experience all around! I can’t think of a thing!

• Chan (10/5): It was the highlight of our trip and we loved it so much. - It was a beautiful historical building with nice interior designs. There are 4 wonderful onsens which we enjoyed a lot. The room is spacious, clean and beds were comfy. The dry room was very convenient for us to store our snowboards. The kaiseki meals provided were excellent and the highlight of our trip. The staff were very welcoming and kind and helped us pack our luggage into our car during our check out and helped us arrange our breakfast and dinner times. It was a bit cold in some parts of the room etc the corridor. However when the doors were closed the rooms were very warm and cosy.

The onsens were fabulous and the staff was polite We stayed at a suite on the first day (12/18-12/19) and compared to the suite, this second day twin room was sub-par: small, run-down with a cold bathroom and toilet; the dinning experience was not as good due to the room downgrade. My suggestion, if you can book the suites, do it

• James (5/5): Authentic Food. Maybe better as a restaurant than a ryokan - Well thought out food menu that was very authentic and delicious. Kudos to the chef and those serving. A special mention to the concierge who helped us with the very heavy luggage. This is no your stay where you can just drive up to and drop your luggage. Parking is a 5 mins walk in the snow, steep stairs and uphill. The ryokan seems determined to only provide one staff to help with my four luggage. This private Onsen is not available we were told that the wind blew off the window and is under repair. While the ryokan pride itself with a long history, the floors creak, no master switches, steps even in the room, bathtub is raised so high you need to step up…

• Horia (10/5): Beautiful & authentic ryokan experience! - One of the best ryokans we’ve stayed at in Japan. The location feels straight out of a Ghibli movie, with over 300 years of history and an amazing atmosphere. We stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed some of the best Japanese food each day at the ryokan restaurant. Since both me and my partner have tattoos, we booked the private onsen every evening through reception. The real highlight was the staff. They went above and beyond to make our stay special, spoke good conversational English, and checked in daily to ensure everything was perfect. Highly recommended for an authentic, cozy ryokan experience!

• Herbert19890716 (10/5): 藏王溫泉歷史悠久的老飯店，感覺來到千尋的異世界 - 從18世紀開業至今有三百多年歷史，可以感受到濃郁的歷史，溫泉分兩個區塊，是日本很稀有的硫磺泉，溫度偏高，但泡起來很舒服，一泊二食的餐點很好吃，提供搬行李的服務，而且還會親自送行，服務相當周到！ 飯店內階梯太多，不適合膝蓋不好的老年人入住，浴室有蟲，但這是有三百多年的旅館，可以諒解，希望營運方能注意除蟲。

• Catherine (7/5): The property needs more maintenance - History, location. It’s a 300 year old property with lots of history however poorly maintained. Onsen area is small and not well maintained.
• Kevin (10/5): Wonderful retreat close by but with a far away feel in time and distance. Classic, but unique design - Excellent food and service at dinner and breakfast. The server spoke English and made the translation of ingredients and the hotel's history more informative, and in general, added a welcoming touch to converse about his experience. The staff was very accommodating and efficient in performing their duties down to carrying our bags to the parking area on departure. It is an older, historic building and the baths needed some updating as in modest repairs to the wood screens and facilities. This is only a minor distraction. Also, the walls are thin so some noise from neighbors was intrusive, but this is not the hotels fault. Note, as you are literally on top of the hot spring, the smell of sulphur can be a bit strong.

Where it was located at the base of the mountain, the beautiful scenery, the timeless aesthetic of the ryokan’s history, and the ongoing relaxing ambiance from the river flowing through the town. Honestly, we absolutely enjoyed everything. Takamiya Ryokan provides an elevated service that is truly worthy of nobility or royalty, yet they were all accommodating and sweet.

• Ying (9/5): I would really like to share this stay to my fd. - The room I stayed is huge and have own onsen, which is very good for my partner as he has tattoos. The hotel is big and like a maze. I love all the public onsen in this hotel. Especially the 石風呂, the environment is super nice. The dinner and the breakfast tastes good. However, I was expecting to have highest level of dinner set, which is having very good beef in sukiyaki. Because I saw in the official website, my room is serving the best set of dinner and having a bottle of sparkling wine as gift. And the price in booking.com and official website is similar. I wonder if booking the room in booking.com may level down the set.

• Nat (8/5): Very good - There is free van service when check in-out, no need to carry luggage from/to the bus terminal. But no service to the ropeway. Staff and service are the best. Location is ok, not near the ropeway but not too far as you can travel around the village. Ryokan is traditional style, good renovate. Good Dinner and breakfast. One thing to recommend in winter is it is very cold in many areas liked - Open air bath room -> Bathroom is too cold, living room is a bit cold. - Japanese-Western bed -> Bathroom and walkway is too cold, bedroom is a bit cold. - Hotel public bath and many areas are too cold. It will be perfect if the ryokan solve this problem.
• Hoi Ting (4/5): - 我是因為有室外私人風呂才訂這套房間，但店員告訴我們，因為太大雪，所以房間的室外私人風呂沒有溫泉提供，只有熱水上來，我不明白室外大眾浴場照常開啟，如果沒有私人風呂，其實我會訂普通房就可以了，因為普通房和有私人風呂的房間價格有很大差距😔，最後付款租了貨切風呂浸溫泉。

• June (8/5): Food ample but limited to 3 types of selection. Some area Old ageing condition - Location and the private onsen within the room. Old detoriating condition for some of the areas. Poor maintenance. Too many staircases due to adhere with conservation requirements. Staying at the big villa is challenging. The staircase leading to upper floor room is super steep. User unfriendly and perhaps expose to potential hazard issues. The ground floor living room is nice, but I feel like a big fridge in winter. Bar counter no housekeeping... poor maintenance. For winter stay... the heating facility is below performance... "uneven heating system". Low headroom clearance within the hotel corridors and the big villa link to ground floor room door transom is greatest hazard. My husband suffered minor physical injury by hitting his head against the low door transom as there is no safety signage. He also hitting his head against different low headroom clearance within the hotel corridors for 4 to 5 times. Our stayed was 6 nights : (2 nights large room with open-air hot tub "not onsen water" but hot water) + (4 nights Large Villa -with "Natural onsen water"). The big villa food quality is not premium. No private dining which is deivated from hotel website. Hotel owner clarified reservation through booking.com excluded premium food and no private dining for Large villa stay for 2 perons. Instead the hotel served our dinner with 3 persons sharing a single hot pot with my other friends which is staying in the same hotel. This is shocking.
