- Kenji (8/5): Convenient ski and onsen, needs updating - Right on the ski slope. Sulfur onsen Grumpy staff with ok food
- Neil (10/5): Great Hotel and Location - Amazing food, so close to the ski slppes it's not funny, onsen was sublime The steps, no lifts...after skiing all day and an hour onsen walking up four flights of stairs is hard going!
- Nalinee (10/5): -
- Amber (9/5): -
- Robert (8/5): Overall a pleasant and comfortable stay - Awesome location with ski-in ski-out. Friendly and helpful staff. A bit dated and rooms a bit daggy

- Hiroaki Abe (7/5):
- Alphond (3/5): -
- Anson (8/5): Great location, ski resort is amazing and snow monsters are well worthwhile for the travel! - Location and the ski in skin out accessibility. The hotel also provided a shuttle to help navigate around the town. Meals are the same everyday and could have more variety and options. Room was a great size for a small family, but toilets and bathrooms are very small.
- Henry (8/5): - ski in ski out public onsen is very small. ski rental shop is in an unorganised mess.

- Liang (9/5): Very nice place to stay - Location is convenient for ski enthusiasts, onsen was very comfortable, and room was very comfortable and spacious for family stay. Can see the lift right from the window of the hotel room. My father fell outside of the facility due to the ice on road. The staff only provided information of hospital which was 40 minutes away. I wish there could have been more helpful information. Clinical resource was scarce in the village that we could understand, but having some emergency response protocol in place on site would be very helpful for the guest who came a long way to visit.
- Winter (5/5): Passable - The dinner. Lack of varieties and not much choices. The rooms bathroom n toilets are very old n the bathtub really need to be changed. It's very unpleasantly black n with many stains. The taps are with green rust
- Cindy (8/5): Ski in n ski out resort - Ski in and ski out resort. Breakfast and dinner are the same menu throughout your stay. The staff are helpful and friendly. The resort entrance is on the slope of the mountain therefore it is inconvenient for luggage and old people. Car is not accessible there.
- Ester (8/5): Very good -
- Wish (10/5): - good location
clean room
- Shuo (6/5): Pleasant -
- Jonell (10/5): Great facility - Ski in ski out Pillows and same food every morning
- Niveachan (5/5): Passable - It is easy to ski-in and ski-out of the hotel. 1. There were very limited choices in the buffet-type breakfast and dinner.
2. We were really surprised that the hotel did NOT make the bed while at the same time they take out the trash and replace the towels.
3. There was no direct access to the hotel lobby from the driveway. The tourists need to carry the luggage in the parking lane (which is actually the driveway closed to the hotel) and step on the slippery snow to reach the entrance of the hotel. What a scary way to get into the hotel!
- Snook (9/5): Pleasant, clean, great staff, fantastic location! - This was a very clean and comfortable hotel, right on the ski slopes. We sent our skiis to and from Narita airport via the affordable luggage delivery. Room was huge and clean, onsen was nice, staff was very helpful and friendly. Discount ski lift tickets are available at the front desk. Meals were fine, but the vegan and vegetarian in our group had little difficulty. All entrees are meat. There is hot tofu at breakfast though. It would be nice to have the tofu at dinner too..
- Maya (6/5): An average stay with ski and onsen - Ski-in-out perfect. Perfect Japanese breakfast. Onsen. Big Japanese rooms with comfy beds. Nice helpful staff. Horrible bathrooms, small, old and dirty. Dirty wardrobes. Rooms need a revamp. Staff that speaks English gave us wrong information. Not enough good English speaking staff.
Not a great resort for skiing. Disappointed.
- Joy小喬 (8/5): Very good -
- Wee Lee (10/5): - We had a great stay at Jurin. Glad that the hotel rooms are renovated. Toilets are fine, only thing is the tap is still old. We were glad to read the reviews before driving up. It was too steep to drive up. so we call for help at Takamiya Lucent. The staffs are all very helpful. and shuttles are very helpful for us during this trip.
- Hendra (9/5): Superb - The view was amazing, we even got free Onsen anytime.. The bathroom was too old..
- Chia (9/5): Superb - Good location Ski in/out. They also have the ticket discount at front desk. Nice hot spring and the drink/wine are included in the dinner buffet. It’s good hotel for family trip. The breakfast and half buffet dinner are all the same every day. Suggest to stay here no more three days.
- Anonymous (9/5): Good place - Very good location! Friendly staffs
- Bir (7/5): Good - Hotel is tired and out fashioned.
Dinner was ok, breakfast was ok.
Nepalese were good.
- Zhihao (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jai (2/5): prepare good snow shoes with spikes to climb up to the Hôtel entrance. - very friendly and experienced Nepali and Mongolian staffs smelly… during stay, changed room twice. toilet in guest room got issue with toilet drainage. they said pipe issues…
parking lot and Hôtel entrance setup is ridiculous. no dry land nor paved between the parking lot and the hotel entrance. we had to carry all bags to climb up icy slippery hills to get to the hotel entrance. it was quite a challenge with snowboards / boots / suit case….
they could’ve have a stairs or dry slope from the parking lot to the Hôtel entrance. no cart was found…
- Phattarachokhirun (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christophe (9/5): Superb - Location. Very attentionnée staff Hotel is great, but the price is way to high for the standing of the hotel (I paid ~350€ one night)
- Marina (9/5): Superb -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Manuel (6/5): Great staff, good for ski, overpriced room - Very average. The room is overpriced but that's common for Japanese style onsen hotels. But despite the price, room amenities and housekeeping service are very basic.
Onsen bath is nice but quite small. It's awkward even to fit 4 people inside.
One highlights is the staff, very helpful, especially the gentleman at the ski rental place, very warm service.
Dinner is also very good and priced fairly (¥3,300 per person for a set menu with a choice of either hot pot, sukiyaki or yakiniku)
The resort is right by the slope so it's perfect to ski. But be careful, the entrance is very tricky. Because of the snow my car struggled to reach the parking and after, we had to walk up the stairs on slippery snow for a few minutes. With a luggage, it's a real struggle.
- Sachin (8/5): - Property location is nice except approach road if one is going by big SUV. Roads in night might be difficult for new person.
Property is not very new and not value to money. Especially toilets in room are bad.
Staff is very nice and co-operative. Breakfast was OK.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Ski in Ski out - 酒店位於雪塲山坡中間
- _e244 (8/5): Beautiful view - It is an old hotel, so you may not want to take a bath in your room, but their public bath is good. This place is on the hill which means you will not want to walk by your own in winter because of the slippery Mountain path. But in other hand it is really convenient because they provide shuttle bus to bus station or cable car station. And there is a ski place just in front of the hotel, you can borrow the equipments from hotel.
- David (8/5): Excellent (but small) onsen - Tip for guests: call the hotel when you get to the Zao Onsen bus terminal; they have a shuttle that will pick you up so you don’t have to walk up the mountain!
Excellent spot for winter sports; you can hop on your skis/snowboard from the lobby and go straight down to the lift! Unfortunately, we were there for the onsen, which was quite small for the number of people the hotel accommodates. Our twin “club” room, on the other hand, was very spacious and had a nice on-the-ground view of the slope.
The included dinner was immaculately plated like most Japanese dinner packages, however drinks were paid separately and the portions were a bit small for us.
- chinkiatc2016 (8/5): Basic ryokan with dated amenities - For the price we paid, we did not expect much. This hotel met our expectation. Meals were served in a large room with little decor. The rooms needed to be upgraded. The shop at the the lobby carried few interesting items and were dearer than elsewhere. The only we liked were the onsen. Even there, the facilities were quite basic. Those who want a touch of luxury should look elsewhere.
- whywendywrites (6/5): Friendly staff, just by the ski slopes - Even though staff could not really speak English, they tried to help. My basic / broken Japanese helped us to communicate with the reception. The rental ski equipment (esp shoes) are abit dated but good enough for a ski just outside the hotel. Location is Good for ski in and out.
The slight slope climb from the car park to the hotel entrance cab be daunting with huge luggage. Luckily the porter helped us. The hotel also kindly arranged shuttle service for us to go to our school school and train station.
Hotel onsen is nothing fantastic tho.
Food is fine but do arrive early for breakfast!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Onsen Hotel - Overall it was good! Staff service was excellent. Breakfast and dinner was served with creativity and variations!
- Tribe-tours (10/5): Little things that matter where service conquers all including understanding each other - I don't say this lightly, but I dare say that this is the best service I have gotten at any hotel ever. But it started out with a bit of frustration and difficulty as almost all of their staff don't speak much or any English at all. But again, that's the beauty of choosing to be away from the usual crowds who flock to Hokkaido.
They do have one staff that they rely heavily on for English speaking guests. I don't remember her name, but she tries very hard. And at times, she is almost forming her sentences as we speak. But she proves once again that great service knows no singular language and conquers through all. She patiently tries to explain all our queries.
Next, the driver. Again, didn't get his name. But this gentleman wears a hat and is around 60 - 70 years old. He operates the van which brings guests up and down the windy snowy roads and back and forth the the Bus Terminal. He took us on so many trips and at the end when I insisted on giving him a tip, he flat out refused us. If you ever book with Jurin, please give him a friendly hi from us and a pat on his shoulder. He works hard and tirelessly without complaining.
Now on Hotel Jurin itself. We booked this through a friend who is Japanese. And what a lovely gem it turned out to be. It sits on a gentle slope and you can literally come out of the hotel, pop on your skis or snowboard and ski down to Jupeer. Our room's view faces the slopes and you are 15 metres away from the ski lifts. Fantastic view.
Meals while not top-notch are very decent. There is a choice between Sukiyaki, Shabu-Shabu, Chicken mushroom pot and some korean style BBQ lamb (menu spells it ramb meet, haha!). If like me, you are thinking you prefer not to have hotel food for 3 days and are the kind who likes to venture out, think again. First, you're there to ski or snowboard. When you come back in the evenings, you may be too tired to. Heading to the onsen in Jurin makes the most sense. After which, you're too clean to want to put on your clothes and head out in the snow, get a vehicle to head to town to find a restaurant. Instead, you'll leave the onsen feeling recharged in your yukatas (traditional Japanese garb) for a warm soupy meal looking at the sunset and watching the night skiers go.
As I said, it's the little things that matter. And I dare say, this is the BEST service I have ever received at any hotel I have stayed in. The hotel may be slightly dated but with the outstanding, friendly service, you'll start seeing the little charms of this hotel. Honestly, I don't know if all the other hotels at Zao have the same friendly service, because this is my only hotel I have stayed in, but generally, the people at Yamagata are super nice and way friendlier than the big cities like Tokyo. Highly recommended!!
- melscottmax (6/5): Good location, tired room - Hotel Jurin was like a number of Japanese ski resort hotels we have stayed in, in that it is getting old and in need of renovation. The decor and fittings are very dated, possibly even original. Our bathroom was one of the smallest we have experienced, and not in good repair. The breakfast was fine, with mainly Japanese options, but also a small range of western breakfast items. The staff tried very hard to assist with enquiries, but English was either non existent or limited. This is obviously not unusual in Japan, but given the promotion of the hotel to English speaking guests, and given our experiences in similar local run hotels, we found the hotel's capacity to communicate with English speakers to be below average. On the plus side, we were able to arrange transport to and from the village on several occasions, including drop off and pick up from a restaurant on a very cold, snowy night.
The location is a winner - true ski in, ski out. And a do-able walk up the hill from the Jupeer Centre ( we found it more direct to do this straight up the side of the ski slope, rather than on the road.)
Having stayed in a few similar Japanese ski hotels over the years, this one wasn't our favourite, although we did enjoy Zao Onsen as a resort.
- em-a-lee1756 (10/5): Sensational location and great place to stay! - Stayed here with with the family of 4 (mum, dad and 2 teenagers) for 6 nights. Caught the Tsubasa Shinkansen to Yamagata and then 40 min ride bus to Zao Onsen bus station (1000¥ pp one way). Arrived at the Zao bus station and got the lady from the visitor centre to call hotel and organise for a pick-up which took about 10 minutes, great service, limited English. Got our ride to hotel which is located part way up the ski slope, definitely ski-in, ski-out!! Wear robust shoes/boots because you need to track a few metres through snow to get to front door and lobby. You need to ski down the slope to catch your first ski lift and lift pass at the base. Check-in/out was easy, though there is limited English spoken here, we made do with simple words and hand gestures, staff were always very friendly and helpful (translate app can also be helpful). Hired our skis, boots and poles from the hotel, good prices. They do hire ski clothing but it was fairly dated, so we made the decision to hire our ski clothes from the Jupeer Base Station which was more appealing to the kids!! Organised our evening meals from a list on the first night (was always a bit of a lucky dip), but we were never disappointed and were fairly excited to see what we would be having each night, very Japanese style evening meals and suited us perfectly because I didn't want to be bothered walking down the slope in freezing weather trying to find something to eat after a full day skiing. Breakfast and dinner held in hotel restaurant, fairly casual, just make sure you wear slippers, many people wore yukatas supplied in room by hotel. We shared a Japanese style family room and had our own bathroom and toilet because our daughter wasn't keen to try traditional Onsen. Slept on mattresses on tatami floors, camping, Japanese style!! When beds were made the first night, the pillows were hard, I mean like being filled with wheat or tiny pebbles!! So went to reception and managed to get ourselves soft feather pillows, you just have to ask, and they were brought to our room. Beds are put out when you have dinner and packed away mid-morning after breakfast. Breakfast each morning is a full buffet with choice of Japanese or Western, plenty to choose from. Kids ended eating enough breakfast we would often skip lunch and just have a snack and then have an early dinner. My favourite indulgence here was the Onsen bath, every day after skiing. Generally went fairly early between 4-5pm and often had the bath to myself, I know it got busier later on. There is a choice of ladies and gents inside Onsen and an outside Onsen (outside ones gets rotated between men and ladies at different times). Small gift shop onsite and usual vending machines available. Beverages were an extra cost at dinner. If you are after a place to stay with Japanese flavour and experience, I highly recommend it, not very many westerners and a lot of Japanese people staying here. Like I said not a lot of English, but be patient, polite, keep it simple and you will get by. We had a ski lesson with local company at base, he was Japanese and said he spoke simple English (was actually fairly good) and gave us a great lesson and tour of the slopes. Walked into the village on a couple of occasions and when we were finished, got shop owner to make a phone call to hotel and they would pick us up. Free wi-fi in lobby, but not in room. I know this is long winded, but I found it hard to get any English info about this hotel, so I want it to be informative. Return trip was the same, got a lift in hotel shuttle to bus station, bus to Yamagata and Shinkansen to Tokyo. Not sure if I would stay here with little children, as long as they are not fussy eaters. Highly, highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again.
