- Hester (6/5): Could have been better! - It was a very modern Ryokan with really good facilities (air conditioner, washing machine, bathtub that can be filled with just a press of a button). The team came to brief us the moment we checked in. They were very friendly and gave suggestions on where to view cherry blossoms. When one of my sons were sick, they even went out of their way to liaise with the paediatric clinic so that we can receive timely treatment. There were toys readily available for my children, which they really loved! 1. The stairs were stepped and slippery, and I fell from the stairs. This can be improved by putting anti slip rubber on each step of the stairs.
2. Even though the apartment appeared modern and generally clean, when you look in greater detail, there were spiderwebs at the corner, dust on the TV console and shelves. I feel that the cleanliness can be improved.
3. The toilet had no area to hang clothes or dry towels.
4. The location of this apartment is far from the train station / bus stop. It requires around 10 minutes walk in a rather quiet neighbourhood.
- Aruna (4/5): Overall absolutely not the worth the money. - It was an extremely complicated check-in process. The documentation they required was not convenient to fill out. When I had called about early check in it was difficult to communicate w the person on the other end due to language barriers. If the check in process is this complicated, then I would hope that the staff would be able to communicate well over the phone to make the process more seamless. Hot water in the shower was not hot, it was quite chilly. The toilet was not cleaned properly on our arrival and the toilet as well as the bathroom sink kept backing up.
The washer/dryer was not easy to use and there were no instructions provided in English on how to use it.

- Emily (10/5): We will return for another stay. - Everything. The house is super cozy and comfortable. The staff makes sure you are comfortable and settled. If you need anything they are really accommodating. Heated floors on the main level which was amazing after a long day of walking. The soaking tub was amazing and futuristic with self heating and auto shutoff. Having a separate room from our teenage daughter was a huge plus. It’s really central and close to everything. Highly recommend staying here. Nothing.
- Thomas (7/5): Solid machiya in a good location for exploring Kyoto - Excellent location near to Tambaguchi station just two stops from Kyoto station and on the line to Arashiyama. Convenient supermarkets and places to eat nearby. Helpful book of information on the dining room table had lots of local walks and guides on things to do.
The house was clean and tidy and well equipped, including a combi washer/dryer. The kitchen was pretty small but was enough for us to make breakfast and lunches.
Shower was excellent and beds were comfortable, though I would have liked more pillows for my head! Steep stairs (though not the steepest in a Kyoto machiya I’ve seen!) and low ceilings, as well as lots of sharp corners, meant I was bumping into things a lot.
The front door and its lock seemed pretty insubstantial and insecure to me.
The WiFi was pretty poor and unreliable throughout our stay, and I wound up having to use my mobile signal instead (mobile signal here was excellent as is typical for Japan).
There’s a beautiful little garden outside the dining room, which is sadly locked off so you can’t sit in it.
- Bonte (9/5): - Belle maison typiquement japonaise, très bien équipée,avec un petite cour zen.De l'espace et une belle décoration.Nous avons eu droit à une présentation des lieux par une personne attentionnée .(Service client réactif)
- Matthias (7/5): Nice Japanese style accommodation - Nice accommodation with traditional Japanese furnishing style. We visited this place for the 2nd time and enjoyed our stay.
- Molly (9/5): Very happy with our time here - The bathroom was lovely. I really liked how you could look out into the garden from the bathtub, it was relaxing. This was both myself and my friends favourite thing.
The laundry machine came in handy as I was running out of clean clothes. I appreciated how the lady came and showed me how to use it as I was overwhelmed by all the buttons!😄
The toilet was very nice and clean with good functions.
Bedrooms were all spacious and staff were very accommodating in helping my friend move into the other room so we didn’t have to share!
Overall we very much enjoyed our stay here, there was a good amount of room, the building gave off an old fashioned Japanese vibe which we enjoyed and it had plenty of amenities. We’d both stay here again next time we’re in kyoto. The Wi-Fi cut out for over a whole morning on one of the days and was pretty slow while we were there. I didn’t need it too much as I had data, but if I was online working from here or didn’t have data and was using it to book taxis or for maps, etc this might have caused a problem. It did come back up on its own though. ☺️
- Tacettin Cagri (8/5): - Only down was that you have no access to garden, which was actually one of the main reasons I made my booking there. It was a bit frustrating, there could be some fresh air from garden. It’s more like an glass exhibition.
- Thomas (10/5): - Great Machiya property, highly recommended.
- Heidi (8/5): -
- Zuzana (10/5): Amazing - The place is absolutely stunning. We loved every part of it. It is located a short walk from the train station, there is a store close by as well. It was clean and fully equipped. We traveled with our almost 2 years old daughter, and they even left some toys and small chair for her. It was so thoughtful and she was super happy.
- Biswas (8/5): Very good - I liked everything about this stay. Wonderful experience!!
- Thearith (10/5): - Staff member greeted us at our Machiya and showed us how to operate things which was very helpful. Machiya was really nice and they provided everything we needed for our stay. A lot of dining and sights to see within walking distance.
- Jacintao (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matt (10/5): Calming stay in a quiet but great location. Exactly the experience we wanted in Kyoto. - Beautifully renovated old Machiya, will super-modern bathroom, and functional kitchen. The layout, and garden worked well with our flow as a family. Highly recommend - stay here and walk to the nearby bicycle hire place (~20mins walk) with amazing coffee! (100bikeskyoto) Nothing I didn't like...
- Jos (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lusine (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing stay! Very friendly and helpful staff! The room was very clean and we really enjoyed our stay, we felt very welcomed and we had a comfortable stay.
- Seow (8/5): Very good -
- Madeleine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Swee (8/5): Good - Good The WiFi is a bit slow. This should be improved.
- Echo (9/5): Gorgeous Property - Lots of space for a couple, automatic bath, very clean, convenient access to transit, super stylish Some beams a bit low for a 6ft tall person, mind your head
- Patryk (10/5): Cozy Machiya - We loved the bath, kotatsu and the garden. Beds were very comfortable and there was a lot of space. Everything we needed was there and the vibe was great.
- Foy (10/5): A beautiful, relaxing and spacious place to stay! - The very luxurious bath was amazing - the house overall is just gorgeous, and the amenities were really great and generous. Also LOVED looking out at the beautiful garden. The washing machine didn’t work super well, and the futon beds were pretty hard but everything else was perfect!!
- Satoko (10/5): Exceptional -
- Koo (9/5): Superb - Everything!
- Feng (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alessandro (10/5): Exceptional - The space is beautiful and very well stocked with all the amenities. It was peaceful but also close to good restaurants. The bathroom is the highlight with the window overlooking into the garden. The check in process is complicated and less than welcoming
- Marco (10/5): Fantastic place to stay in Kyoto - Nice machiya, spacious and well equipped. Well connected by bus, 5 or 10 minute walk to a bus or train stop. Big drugstore just across the street and a local fish monger next door. Excellent place to stay and can only highly recommend. The door to the small garden is locked due to insects. Pity since I would have liked to sit there for meditation.
- Emily (10/5): We loved our stay, will visit again. - The place was lovely, quiet and clean. Staff were friendly and welcoming, very timely response to questions. We loved our stay, will visit again. Nothing
- Marcos (9/5): Superb - The space
- Pamela (9/5): Lovely - Lovely renovated machiya in a quiet neighborhood away from the tourist buzz. Had pretty much everything we needed for a four-day stay. It was well-heated for an old house and we enjoyed the ofuro bath.
The staff was very kind and arranged to have us taxied to the home from our checkin point. The doorways are low as is typical so be careful if you’re over 5’10!
- Susanna (10/5): Amazing traditional house which is very well upkept - The house is beautiful and feels very lived in (in a good way! does not feel like a soulless rental). There were a lot of amenities (amazing bathtub!) and the kitchen was very well equipped. The house is very roomy and in good upkeep. It is not very central but we did not mind walking 25 minutes to Nishiki market or 35 minutes to Gion. To check in, you need to go and get keys from a restaurant near the Kyoto train station which was an easy process.
- Spencer (8/5): great stay experiencing Japanese culture . Also the home was cleaned twice which was great - Very traditional Japanese home. Clean and functional it was a little small with low ceilings, so if you are tall you may be bumping your head. However this was a tradityJapanese home so it is to be expected.
- Atita (9/5): Big space , clean , - Beautiful as photo , far from station , Big space , clean, unique style
- Susanna (9/5): Superb - Excellent location, well equipped, quiet and comfortable house in a residential area of Kyoto. The beds were incredibly comfy. I enjoyed having our own house, away from the main tourist drag yet there were still a lot of great restaurants, convenience stores and supermarkets around. It was also just 2 stops away from kyoto station from the nearest station. There were many convenient buses too.
The staff were very kind and even sent us off in a taxi to the house from the check in location for free. The staircase to the bedroom was very steep and narrow, and the ceilings are quite low if you're tall, but I recognise that's a common characteristic of Machiya houses in Japan!
- Frank (9/5): Lovely and comfortable stay in nostalgic space - Very comfortable bedroom. Beautiful garden and authentic tatami spaces. An enjoyable experience of what it used to be like, with modern comforts. Located only steps from a main road and lots of infrastructure, but super quiet at night. The kitchen space was a bit tight for two people to move around in simultaneously, but fine for simple meals. The house next door was under major renovation, but was not very disruptive for us as we were out most of the day. Still, may be a good idea to ask about that before booking, as the whole interior was gutted.
- Alina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Norahmed (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts really went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable, and even helped to forward our luggage to the Tokyo hotel. The house was very quaint and comfortable and the amenities were generous. The neighborhood is closed to several train lines, but not in the heart of the action. For us this wasn't an issue, because provided a chance to check out a different side of Kyoto. There were lots of neighborhood cafes around, catering to the local community instead of tourists.
- Sopyte (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matthias (10/5): Beautiful house in traditional Japanese style in the middle of Kyoto. - Beautiful house in traditional Japanese style in the middle of Kyoto. Very convenient to get to all highlights of Kyoto. Very friendly staff and service. Nice traditional breakfast restaurant „Kado“ just 5 minutes away. Nothing to complain!
- Emmanuel (9/5): Superb - Beautiful and comfortable home with everything we needed. We loved the hot bath with garden
view. The staff was extremely available and helpful to every question we had. They came over within 15 minutes if we needed them. Great experience! It is not specific to this house, but traditional Japan houses tend to have door frames that are quite low (the guys in our family are all over 186m). We hit our heads quite often despite we were aware of this fact. It’s slightly out of the way, but very manageable with taxi.
- Trong-viet (9/5): Family stay in central Kyoto, look no further. - Machiya Oozora is centrally located and quite easy to get to bus, train and places of interests in Kyoto.
The Machiya feels like a home away from home, and the staff has been very responsive to your needs. Great value for family. Nothing really
