Guest Reviews
- Dominic (10/5): Value for money 👌 - Great location No complaints
(6/5): - Close to rental shop. Easy access to ski slope. The hotel lacked facilities like a restaurant or a lobby.
I found the coffee was too weak.
The whole facility was too dark and gloomy.
Public bath was too old and not pleasant.
- Ekaterina (7/5): -
- Tracey (10/5): Amazing - Absolutely loved our time here. Next time we will stay longer. Thank you to all the amazing staff
- Rudrum (10/5): Kodama comfort - Location is perfect for ski in ski out.
Room is large and very clean.
Staff are great.
- Stephen (9/5): Location ski in/out, comfort, food, big rooms - Japanese older style hotel with great food, big rooms and comfy bed. Fantastic location ski in/out right in the middle of the ski area cross Point. Would stay again, great value hotel.
We we're in a Triple room which was huge As with most Japanese style hotels the lounge area could be a little more cosy for after ski drink and chat. Not enough of a reason to put us off this place we had a great stay!
- Yoriko (2/5): Never again - No enthusiasm for business very sad Location is not bad
- Geoffrey (7/5): - Great location to access Central Shiga Kogen skifields. Just a few steps to access Ichinose Diamond or Family ski areas and on from those to a number of others by skiing. Bus stops opposite the hotel also. Very nice dinners at night. For non-Japanese people the staff spoke very little English so I experienced a few communication issues even when we used Google translate. Not much to do in Ichinose or Shiga Kogen at night. The main light in "western style" rooms is disabled for some weird reason so I found my room a bit dark.
- Bernie and Greg (10/5): Overall experience one to remember. Will repeat again without hesitation!! - Location, efficiency, friendliness, extraordinary food for dinner, ample substance for breakfast. Vending machine for a quick coffee or hot white tea not available - empty ☹️
- Okamura (7/5): -
- william (9/5): Recommended for catered accommodation with ski lifts just out the door. - Great location, wonderful food, friendly staff!
- Jamie (8/5): Great place to stay in Shiga Kogen - The place was very convenient and centrally located to the ski slopes. The rooms were clean and comfortable, though dated. Dinner and breakfast were great, though. If you aren't a seafood eater or have allergies, you might want to see if there are options. The ski lockers were small, and we had trouble getting all our skis and poles in. No WiFi in the rooms.
- Catherine (8/5): -

- Martha (6/5): Excellent, hearty dinners, 5star location, but a frill-free older hotel - Location close to lifts, tickets and ski rentals at Ichinose Area. Bus stop close. Waitstaff very nice. A Most interesting (unsafe, creepy)top floor stairwell with no light for the washing machine/dryer. Good ski locker area. Onsen crowded, small with no seating or ammenities , poor ventilation in the Ladies wet area caused steam so thick you couldnt see where the washing area was, or the edge of the onsen. It also was TINY. Mens was much larger but always very crowded reported my husband.
Our Tatami Mat room had very old foam underlay cushions with hard and cracked foam. And no soft pillows (just trad.bean bag style, hard as rocks). So sleep left us with neck cricks and sore hips (not from our skiing).
No need for alarm clock, pipes at 7am pinged and creaked better than a custom ring tone! (But we did find the room temperature comfortable overall.)
Kodama has two large statement piece fireplaces at reception lounge, but neither operating. Lounge lights overhead were too dim to be inviting for guests to engage in a social setting. No warmth or style on reception floor. Little artwork, poor lighting, no warmth or color except brown.
Hotel Kodama is clean and efficiently run, starkly furnished everywhere except the dining areas. It lacks any charm but has so much potential. Dinners were a star but inflexible for inviting additional family members to join us for dinner one evening . The building has been maintained in mostly original 1970s era but structure has been repaired, double glazed windows updated, bath fittings good…. But so plain and dark and sad.
- Ping (10/5): I would definitely stay here again. Excellent location and great value. - Old school Japanese ski hotel. Excellent location located on the slopes and mid resort. Easy to get two different parts of the mountain from here. Restaurants are a short walk away and the bus stop is located just across the entrance of the hotel. All parking in the Shiga Kogan area is free and there is a parking lot just across from the hotel. Breakfast is simple and abundant however, you only have about an hour window to eat. When the hotel is full, the line can be pretty long. Dinner was exceptional and included in our stay as well as breakfast. Having a private bathroom and shower in your hotel room is very nice. There is a ground level dry room for all of your ski and snowboard gear. Each room has its own locker, however small and dated. The front desk staff was very accommodating and can help with shipping and receiving your gear. There are several features of the property that are not being utilized that could definitely add to the grandeur of the property. I didn’t find the age of the hotel to be offputting. Mainly that certain areas were under utilized or not well kept.
- Diane (8/5): - Great location next to the ski lifts. Meals breakfast and dinner were excellent and the staff very good. Public bath was great after a ski day for a soak.
- Ken (10/5): A hidden Gem - Dont spoil it ! - This is our third visit. We dont want the word to get out that its so good. This is a very traditional Japanese family hotel. The meals are amazing every night is better than the last, Breakfast is a Buffet with everything you need. Its located across the road from the one of the ski lifts. It snowed so much we could ski home without taking our skis off. Nothing at all we love Hotel Kodama. Dont feed the Snow Monkeys

- Daniel (8/5): -
- Irving (9/5): - Breakfast and dinner were delicious
- Geoffrey (8/5): - Location near lifts and transport, quality of meals, staff help Bath small in traditional Japanese room
- Alan (7/5): -
- Gail L Dempsey (6/5): Very basic hotel. There is no lounge area, just tables in the foyer. No warmth to the hotel. - Location. No Lounge area. Very basic hotel. Onsen ..... tiny.
- Narumon (9/5): Great - Location, Dinner, Staff
- Bonnie (10/5): Loved our stay. Would love to return again. - Amazing location. Bus drops and picks you up right from the front. Across the road is the ski rental place and also the lifts. Did not have to line up for anything which was awesome.
Could not ask for better food. Different food each night and breakfast. Dinner includes delicious sashimi. The staff were all very friendly. We were travelling with our baby who received a lot of attention from the beautiful ladies from the kitchen.
Good size traditional room with everything you needed. Loved using the communal bath. Can’t think of anything.
- Adrian (8/5): -
- Cox (7/5): - Location to lifts transit bus and shuttle bus is amazing
Onsen is great..
Staff at the desk did everything they could do including giving some adhesive for my google foam. Old needs some work and repairs.
- MichelleAlan (7/5): -
- Allister (5/5): Good location to ski from but little else apart from a bed and a feed. - Plenty of food... but a bit mixed up between Western and Japanes 1. Smoking room next to the ski area so you get the stink of smoke when getting ready to go skiing
2. Smoking room smoke pervades up to the end of the dining area.
3. Seats in the onsen are so low that you have to be a contortionist to sit down on one, especially after a big day skiing
4. Had to dig a car space and was parked in on occasions.
5. Difficulty in obtaining extra pillow.
- April (6/5): -
- Yasuo (8/5): -
- Karin (8/5): Enjoyable as a good location next to ski area - Fabulous location near ski lifts and bus stop. Japanese room was clean but basic. Heating was variable. Dinner was mainly Japanese but plenty to eat and good fresh local food. No drying room for ski gear and would bring own ski gear as nearby rentals very limited. Would definitely stay there again but probably take a western room.
- Jesse (3/5): Good location - Good location Terrible food
- Michael (8/5): Great location and friendly staff - Great location. Just across from the ski rental shop and the slopes. Easy to catch a small lift to cross a bridge to the Ichinose family ski area or just head across the road to the Shiga Kogen Diamond area. The Onsen was good and the staff helpful. Our room was an end room with views of both ski areas. The meals were large and gave a good variety of Japanese food that was appealing to a person akin to western food. While there were a few lounge chairs in one area and some tables and chairs in another area, It was a shame that there was not a functional lounge and bar for socialising. We found we had to go to other lodges for this sort of thing. I’m sure it could be done as there was a bar that had been used in the past and a shop with all sorts of ‘goodies’ but neither were open despite the hotel being fully booked out. Not a deal breaker but it had obviously been functional in the past.
- Chia Yi (8/5): -
- Dani (10/5): I will definitely recommend this hotel to anyone that wants to eat and sky. Best combo! - Great location, on the ichinose ski slopes which can let you to all the areas in no time.
The food is out of this world, excellent dinner!
- Karin (10/5): Well go back for sure! - Amazing meals! Coffee in the room
- dean (9/5): - Amazing location for our ski trip. The dinner was great and staff were helpful.

- Lydia (10/5): - The food was excellent, the location was convenient to skiing and the bus, and the onsite onsen was awesome and relaxing.
- yoshihiro (5/5): -
- Francis (8/5): Good accommodation with very convenient location to the slopes and bus station. - Meals provided were excellent and good value.
Location is convenient to the slopes, bus station and also to the equipment hire store across the road.
Rooms were comfortable. Heating during the night in the room would switch off which made the room cold.
Poor lighting where the dryer and washing machine is located.
- Brad (9/5): -
- Zhang (10/5): -

- Jessica (8/5): Perfect for a ski holiday with no bells and whistles! Great value. - Comfortable beds, great location, amazing food!! Everything you need any nothing you don’t. Western rooms are big. We’ll be back for sure!!👍 Staff weren’t overly welcoming or nice, starting to get a bit run down, the women’s Onsen is tiny (especially compared to the men’s Onsen!!!!)
- Atanas (9/5): Would go back in a heartbeat. If you are not picky on luxuries, a great place to stay. - Amazing location, snow and skiing, superb 7 course Japanese dinners, very good buffet breakfast, room and bathroom size, cleanliness, onsen, room views, great price for what is on offer. It is not a luxurious place but very well run and comfortable. Hard bed mattress and uncomfortable pillows, 7am wakeup call from the heating pipes, little English by any of the staff
- Nadine (7/5): - Great hotel to ski in and out at the outskirts of the Ichinose ski area. We had half board. Plenty of food at dinner, sashimi fish, plenty of meat, not many vegetable options. All Japanese food. Fresh fruit, great Apple juice and a mix of Japanese and western food for breakfast.
Nice little onsen per gender. There was an unusual smell in the room that seem to come from the traditional pillows. Rustic interior.
- Andrew (8/5): -
- Vladimira (8/5): The dinner is definately increase total evaluation. Staff was always very helpful and kind. - Excellent dinner... old room with noisy heating. With dinner combination is good balance for accomodation value.
- Craig (7/5): -

- Clara Mae (9/5): Great value for money, would stay again - Hotel Kodama exceeded our expectations for value for money and convenience. The ski lifts are right across the road which made our daily trip to the lifts a breeze every morning. The bus from Nagano station also stops right outside the hotel (return bus is also a short walk to the bus stop), which is ideal in sub zero temperatures. A ski rental shop is right across the road. Dinners were also fantastic, we looked forward to it every night after a gruelling day on the slopes! Breakfast was great with fresh breads, scrambled eggs, cereal, cold meats and sausages. The hotel is simple but comfortable and perfect for a 5-day stay. We will be recommending the hotel to friends and rate it 5 stars for convenience! The wifi in the hotel is awful, most things took ages to load. The public bath serves its function but was slightly small. There’s also no bar in the hotel but there’s one right next door which is a minute walk.
- Justin (8/5): It was a very good value and enjoyable stay for enthusiastic skiers and snowboarders. - I think this hotel is the best located accommodation in Ichinose, very close to two lifts, very easy to access both central area and Yokoteyama area.
It was also nice that most room here are western style , good for those not used to Japanese futon. Also the dinner was very good. Although the facility in here was quite solid, they will turn down heater at night , which is not a problem, but the noise in the morning for turn on the heater was quite loud.
- Edward (9/5): Great location and value for money - Great location staff helpful and friendky and tried to communicate even though little.english was spoken. The half board was excellent value. And food served each night was delicious..the onsen helped after a day of skiing. Great central location in the resort. Basically, ski in ski.out position Pillows where hard seemed to be like large wheat bags , mattresses were a bit thin so need two to three on top of each other to be comfortable. Not able to control room temperature and the Thermos made noise when coming on at 6am so.woke up.the room.

- belinda (10/5): Top Notch Ski location with Protein filled Dinners to Fuel any ski enthusiast. - We recently had the pleasure of staying at Kodama during our family skiing trip in Japan, and it was truly an exceptional experience. The hotel's location was absolutely perfect—practically ski-in, ski-out, which made it incredibly convenient for our family of four, especially with young children in tow. We could easily access the slopes without any hassle.
One of the highlights of our stay was the free parking, which eased our travel worries and allowed us to enjoy day trips without the usual parking stress. The staff at the hotel were incredibly helpful and went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed throughout our stay. Their friendliness and attentiveness made a significant difference in our overall experience.
We opted for the half-board meal plan, which included both breakfast and dinner. The dining experience was delightful; the dinner service was a sit-down affair featuring three types of protein each night, expertly prepared and beautifully presented. This was a refreshing change from the buffet-style meals that many other ski hotels seem to offer, allowing us to enjoy quality time together at the table.
The rooms were in good condition and provided a cozy retreat after a long day on the slopes. They were spacious enough for our family, and we appreciated the comfort and cleanliness during our stay.
Overall, Kodama offered a fantastic skiing experience complemented by excellent service, convenient amenities, and delicious dining options. We would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a family-friendly ski hotel in Japan. We can’t wait to return! There truly wasn’t anything we disliked about our stay. If we had to nitpick, the coffee in the morning could have been stronger, and the onsen temperature wasn’t always ideal.
- Chee Kiat (7/5): Generally good if you don’t use the laundry and public bath - Location was good, next to ski slope
Dinner provided for half board was very good
Rooms were generous in size.
Staff were very helpful Laundry was in the fire escape stairwell, and had no lighting. Washing machine was also dirty
I was there during winter and heating was turn off late in the night and turn on only at 7am!
Public bath changing area is cold

- yuko (8/5): -
- Javier (1/5): Disastrous! Like traveling back in time to the 80’s, and not in a good way! - The location is great for a ski trip. The hotel is really old and poorly maintained.
The hot water in our room didn’t work, and they took 1 day to fix it. That’s a huge deal when you’re skiing and come back to a cold shower after a day in the mountains. The staff didn’t have any sense of urgency, and were totally unapologetic.
The ski lockers are too small for 2 pair of skis, and most won’t fit a snowboard.
They shut down the heating at night, which is a big deal considering that the windows don’t fit properly. When they switch the heating again at 6am, the pipes sound like a submarine for a couple of minutes, waking everyone up.
The staff is poorly trained and don’t care about the guests.
You get worst than a youth hostel quality for a 3 star price.
Booking shouldn’t list a property like this!
