- JAMES (6/5): Way too expensive for a run down property - The onsen, the beds The food, they need to cater more for foreigners. Translation
- Elmar (9/5): -
- FrancescoSgobba (1/5): - READ THIS BEFORE TO BOOK THIS PLACE AND I WILL TELL YOU WHY
- Please read carefully the description, no shower in the room. So you need to go to the onsen to shower
- The open air onsens are actually public. You can just stay somewhere else and enjoy them as all other people of the town do
- The room was cold
- We found used socks in the wardrobe
- The tea they provided is not so good as other places we tried in Japan
- The staff is young and low experienced
In my opinion you will not get the right value for the money you spend. One of the worse experience in terms of quality/money value in the last years of Booking use.

- Christopher (10/5): Went above and beyond! - This hotel exceeded all of my expectations and was the nicest stay on my two week trip. The staff are very friendly and will go out of their way. The included dinner was absolutely amazing. The onsite onsen was a real treat. The rooms could use an upgrade, but other than that, this hotel more than delivered on all accounts. The rooms could use a bit of an upgrade. Other than that, absolutely no complaints about this property.
- Sean (8/5): Comfortable onsen hotel in a time warp - Lovey staff. Great to have multiple onsen options. Good location for those walking the Kumano Kodo. Comfortable (if dated) rooms. Good food. Some may not appreciate the older decor. The onsen areas in Sasayuri could be cleaner.

- phitsinee (10/5): Love here - Good food , nice room None
- Kian Hee Winston (10/5): - Spoilt for choice for the numerous onsens here. Great food.
- Moran (10/5): - Extra ordinary service level by the amazing staff! Great food, the onsens are nice and comfortable. If you'de like to experience classic Japan in its fullest this the place. Nothing
- Stefany (9/5): Overall lovely. Staff was excellent. Very welcoming. Loved yukata and bath experience - Beautiful Restaurant closed at 7pm. Guests could not buy dinner or breakfast at the hotel unless the booked online previously. Challenging for hungry travels who arrive at 7pm or later.

- Oliver (10/5): Immersive visit to Japan - Amazing food, friendly staff, great variety of Onsen

- Hien (10/5): Exceptional, would stay again! - The food was perhaps the best we’ve had on the Kumano Kodo trail and we ate well. They have a shuttle that took us to Hongu Taisha which was very convenient. All the staff were very friendly and the onsens and baths were relaxing.
- Florian (6/5): - Nice Onsen Pretty high class, but old-fashioned and very expensive hotel; personally not worth the money
- Taryn (10/5): We loved this hotel and the beautiful and healing baths, the helpful and professional staff! - We loved the bath options, the breakfast and dinner were exquisite, the property was beautiful and the staff were extremely helpful in helping us plan our travel and transportation. It was farther away than we realized however a gorgeous location.
- MICHAEL (7/5): Not suited to westerns and charging 5500 for a lost room plastic card is just plain profiteering - Lovely room and lots of effort showed in the dinner and breakfast No yukata in the room - had to ask for them.
Not really suited to Western guests - the meals were beautifully presented but we had no idea of what anything was or how to proceed with the meals (this is our 3rd trip to Japan so accustom to Japanese food but this was a whole other level)
Charged 5500 yen for a lost plastic room key - outrageous given how expensive the accomodation was. The card was worth about 100 yen at most. Very disappointed
- Zheng (8/5): -
- Susan (10/5): Beautiful serene place in Kumano Kodo - Definitely the onsen. There’s an option for private and public onsens, and also public/private options. Full board with breakfast and dinner included It’s a little dated and could use a refresh. Would be nice if the laundry is within the Onsen instead of having to walk out
- chunning (5/5): -
- Gail (10/5): Highly recommend Watarase Onsen Hotel Sasayuri! - Very friendly and professional staff, delicious meals, private onsen soaking rooms, large and comfortable guest rooms. It can be difficult to find if hiking or using the bus drop off.
- Belén (5/5): -
- Phoebe (10/5): Well-worth splurge - Customer service is 10/10. Personalized tour of the facilities and to my room. The dinner and breakfast were delicious and made me feel like a special guest. The access to the private onsens was perfect Room facilities were a bit dated
- Yuki (8/5): - Comfortable bed
Free shuttle from/to Kumano Hongu Taisha
All staff are very nice and friendly
- Sippy Sondhi (7/5): Modern style onsen hotel; outdated; overpriced, good food - The staff were amazing and it was incredible to be able to have access to indoor and outdoor onsen all day and until 9pm at night. Very spacious rooms. The in-house meals were exceptional. Very outdated (felt very 1970s) and even though it was clean, it felt musty and old. Definitely felt very overpriced for what it was.
- Sarah (10/5): Fabulous stay in the Kumano Kodo region - Super helpful and friendly staff. Great breakfasts and evening meals. Comfortable large rooms. Private onsen a bonus Nothing to criticise
Maybe worth noting that 'shared bath' means no shower/bath in the ensuite and that you need to use the indoor/outdoor pools for a shower/bath.
- Bowen (8/5): -
- Chen (9/5): Wonderful staff, the breakfast and dinner were excellent. Serene surrounding and short hike to kumano odo - THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT While the room was clean, it was obvious that it’s very old and seem outdated with the interior
- Linda (9/5): -
- Yane ken (10/5): - The staff Mr. Shiraisi is extremely helpful and let us feel it is home while we stayed there. His suggestion to have a local fishing in the stream next to the Hotel is a fun time to our family. They cooked the fish we caught as part of our dinner although is a very small one. Definitely recommend this hotel for people hiking in Kumono.
- ran (9/5): -
- Arnon (6/5): More of a health vacation place - Room size Food variety - no room service
No shower in room
Hervorragendew jq
- Joshua (9/5): Luxury Onsen experience with great food - The dinner and breakfast assortment was more than enough to be satisfied and also of great variety of flavours and dishes. The focus is on Japanese cuisine, with some surprises we would have never eaten otherwise. The staff always did their best. The provided facilities and Onsen were all great. The washing machine and dryer was on the other side of the bridge, but as long as there is one I am okay with that. You can also use the private spa, right next to it, to wait for it to be done.
- Masashi (8/5): -
- Ponyohua (10/5): 惬意和温馨 - 地理位置:离汤峰王子大概10min的车程,比想象中要更便利一些;而且离小云取越入口请川也很近,也是十来分钟的车程;
温泉:酒店的私汤还是蛮不错的,人不多,我们入住的那天貌似就只有我们,泡完汤还体验了和服,蛮开心的;
便利店:酒店内没有大的便利店,但是像泡面、水、以及特产,还是可以买到的;
餐饮:有个公共的露天吕风,边上有个餐饮店,7:00-19:00营业;
- Kathy (8/5): - The staff was very helpful with coordinating transportation for us. The facility is very nice with both private and group onsen - we only wish we’d had more time to enjoy all of the onsen. The dinner was great also. Expensive compared to other onsen in the area.
- Xinyu (8/5): Very good -
- Julie (8/5): Very good -
- Tyler (9/5): Superb -
- Clare (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful, peaceful hotel with amazing onsen facilities. Dinner and breakfast exceptional - a real highlight. Staff lovely and welcoming. Would definitely recommend!
- Romuald (9/5): Local Japanese experience with superb food and picturesque onsen - Great staff, wonderful onsen facilities and river access… food was superb …. Twin beds was disappointing but everything else was great….
- Helena (10/5): Friendly, welcoming hotel in a beautiful location - I was very happy when I got to the hotel the atmosphere just felt really friendly and warm. I loved the bridge over the river to the onsen. The onsen was lovely, three outside pools and an indoor pool plus a private onsen for families or couples. The food was fantastic, eat slowly I ate too quickly and felt full too soon. There was a very friendly front of house staff member called Suchittra or maybe Sasayuri. I had a western twin room on the ground floor. The hotel was comfortably busy without being hectic. They have a shuttle bus and that was very handy from Hongu. When I left they gave me very good instructions how and when to catch the public bus to my next location. Nothing. It was all lovely. Maybe a bit expensive for a solo traveller.
- Sleepy (8/5): Convenient comfortable stay when visiting temples in Kumano area. - The front desk staff and concierge staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The grounds were pretty especially because we went during Sakura season. We arrived on a rainy day and even then, looking out at the flowers through the lobby window was like a painting. Outdoor onsen is another attraction. Property is a bit run down. Typical 70s style decor could be improved. Heating only; no AC.
- Qasim (9/5): Superb -
- René (9/5): Great stay with onsen baths and near nature - Our stay was a truly Japenese experience, with the multiple onsen baths at the hotel. Breakfast and dinner was very extensive and impressive.
- Mary (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mary (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephen (9/5): Comfortable and relaxed with excellent dining. - Overall very comfortable and relaxed. Excellent outside bath and excellent refined or cheap dining options N/A
- Rebecca (10/5): Exceptional service, magical location, incredible exquisite culinary experience! - We loved the incredible kaiseki style dinner and breakfast - absolutely incredible! So delicious and interesting. I am vegetarian (rest of my family eat everything) and I was very well and specifically catered for - exceptional. The private onsen was also awesome - great for those with tattoos, as also great as we could have our whole family together in one onsen. The indoor baths were also really lovely. We had them to ourselves. The hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating and even helped us out by driving us to pick up luggage from our previous hotel which was well beyond our expectation - exceptional service, thank you.!
- Takahiro (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice staff
- Lachlan (9/5): Superb -
- William (8/5): Very good -
- Jessica (8/5): Wonderful to get the feet up after hiking. - The massage chairs (near the Ice cream vending machine) and it was so quiet and peaceful. We couldn’t get dinner despite the restaurant being mostly empty because we hadn’t booked it the day before. We didn’t know. We had a walk to a market that closed at 5pm.
- Montoyany305 (6/5): Pleasant - Decent place The shared bathroom .not sure if private baths are an option but it is what it is I suppose . Ac not to cold either
- Stefano (8/5): Very good - Access to onsen baths and great dinner Looking old, would need refurbishing
- Andrea (7/5): Good - We liked that this property was available when we decided at the last minute to hike the kumano kodo. The room was large and very comfortable and the various onsens were excellent. We were able to take the hotel shuttle to the start of the hike on our first day hiking from there. When we needed to organise a lunch for an early start the second day the hotel drove us to the local shop in the evening because we would be leaving too early for the hotel lunch. The dinner at the hotel was excellent (though we felt a little rushed) Ideally, as a hiker, it would be easier for bus transfers if we had stayed in Hongu. Early starts proved a little challenging from here. Also, because we booked just two days before staying (in the busy hiking season) the price was very high.
- David (8/5): Very good -
- David (9/5): Quirky and thoroughly enjoyable - The onsens we delightful and the staff were extremely helpful and polite. Nothing was obvious or easy to understand concerning services offered by the hotel. No obvious information about methods for walkers to start or finish the Kumono Kudo. For english speaking foreigners, this is very important information. Of course in Japan there is always a system and method, but it was opaque and not obvious to us aliens. eg there is a free bus service in the morning from the Hotel to the JR station. This would be very good to know if you are not travelling by car.
- Elena (9/5): Superb - The onsen! There were 3 onsen options:
1. Big thermal baths inside the main hotel building
2. Small external private baths in the main hotel building
3. Big natural thermal bath in the other side of the river
I think the external private baths were a very welcome luxury.
The location was isolated which is what we were looking for, very relaxing. The view from the rooms was like a painting and the river side and bridge were beautiful when surrounded by pink flowers.
Breakfast was quite complete and tasty, it was never the same.
The service was very attentive, without us asking they accompanied us after the check out to offer taking a picture of us on the nice bridge. I had an issue with the reservation on Booking, this is an issue because of Booking, not the hotel. When I reserved the room in Booking, I selected an option with dinner and breakfast, I was happy with what I paid (a lot for my standards) only because I though dinner was included but it wasn't, only breakfast was selected. Considering there aren't many dinner options in the area we got very angry...
Apart from this, I was surprised by the big spider web in our room considering everything was quite clean.
- Agnieszka (8/5): Very good - Very friendly and helpful staff, delicious food, good onsen. Peaceful, welcoming, comfortable. Highly recommended!
- Mattias (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (8/5): Very good - Good hotel to rest in onsen for a day after walking the KUMANO pilgrimage
- Sommelierk (6/5): Great service at a standard onsen hotel. Great outdoor onsens. - This is one of the onsen hotels of the same group in Watarase onsen - used to be one of three, now it’s one of two since they closed the third one. Sasayuri is the nicer one and it’s a classic onsen hotel with large rooms and the usual public bath amenities. You have to call the hotel in advance to book the free shuttle pick up (15 min away) from Hongu Taisha mae bus stop which is convenient for those walking the Kumano Kodo and/touring the Hongu Taisha.
Excellent service from reception staff to restaurant staff to driver. We organised luggage shuttle delivery (another company called Torii) and the hotel reception were great in making sure our bag was rightly labelled. They also helped us with getting small change for our bus fare.
Food was good - not outstanding if I’m being picky as compared to other onsen hotels; but plentiful and delicious. The only area of improvement for dinner serving staff to serve up the dishes in a better order - eg let us finish the sashimi first before serving the hot dishes.
The hotel has a public indoor bath. For outdoor onsen baths you can use the ones in the neighbouring (same chain) hotel which is a short 5 min walk via a connecting suspension footbridge.
Rooms are very spacious, slightly dated but that’s the vibe of most onsen hotels in Japan anyway. Free coffee in the lobby. WiFi was good.
Overall great location to stay for those doing the Kumano Kodo hike.
I would give this a 3.5 out of 5, but TripAdvisor doesn’t allow half points.
- Niels (8/5): Comfortable, large room and great facilities. - The private onsens were great. Location wise, this hotel is in a beautiful environment. Room smelled a bit old, not fresh. Probably the carpet. But got used to it quite quick.
- Sofie (2/5): bad value for money. old facilities - staff cannot speak English which makes it hard to get any information at all. value for money is very bad. extremely expensive for a very old and outdated hotel.
- Evgeniia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mauricio (2/5): - Tried to check out and could not as they did not have staff to take payment. Had to leave to make it to bus in order to catch my train and flight. Has to go to extraordinary lengths to pay them after. Also extremely overpriced for this hotel, would never come back.
- Hideko (10/5): Exceptional -
- wil331 (8/5): Good Onsen, but very normal hotel - We took the latest bus from Shingu to Watarase Onsen, when we arrive, it was so dark, we had to call hotel to pick up us from the bus stop. The hotel has very big outdoor onsen, it was so nice. but the room had no shower and aslo too cold inside. The breakfast was only so so to compare with other Onsen hotel. Anyway, we like the onsen so much!
- J00lsC (8/5): Great baths, peaceful atmosphere - Situated along the historic Kumamo Kodo pilgrimage route, the Watarase Onsen complex comprises 3 hotels catering to different budgets. Sasayuri is targeted at the high end, with very large rooms, good service, great meals, and access to one of the largest open air hot spring baths (rotenburo) in Japan. They will pick up and drop off at Shirahama station for free if you make advance arrangements, which makes it easy to access this hotel, which is nestled in the mountains.
This hotel also offers free access to family (private) baths, as well as free use of massage chairs in the lobby.
A wonderful mountain retreat that is more accessible than you think.
- YWL_12 (10/5): Good food, nice bath and great service - The hotel is quite secluded so you will need a car to go there. From my limited Japanese knowledge, they seem to have one pick up and drop off time to train station (might be Hongu). The staff did not speak lots of English so do download a Japanese English translation app before you go, I think that would be useful. There is no free wifi there so google translate won't work.
The room was very tidy, staff were friendly and the food was amazing. The public bath was very nice with all the nice lotions, shampoo and shower gel etc. The onsen was perfect, if you go at night time, you can see the star and moon. There were 4 private onsen bath available but you do have to get there early! We went at 6:30am in the morning and it was the most peaceful place on earth.
