Guest Reviews
- Dr.N.saravanasankar (9/5): -
- Smitha_Ganesh (10/5): - Beautiful stay and service! Incredible staff, food and so close to the beach!
The whole ambience and comfort is incredible! The restaurant has great food as well
- Ramu (8/5): Nice. Near to the Beach. - The location was fantastic. The Lunch we ordered was really good. The room had a old wooden smell. Pungent and no airy. The bed sheets were dirty and the towels were pathetic. Overall needs a good upgrade.
- PRADEEP (8/5): We had a great time. The Varanda and staff were exceptional - The Bungalow is on the sea front so it’s a great view. The varanda is what is unique and special about the property! We spent hours on it. Maintenance has to be substantially upgraded to Neemrana standards
- LAGRANGE (9/5): - L'endroit est extraordinaire, ce comptoir danois perdu là au bout du monde, quel charme!
La situation de l'hotel, vieil immeuble colonial juste face à la mer est magique, personnel trés sympathique

- Salil (7/5): Spectacular historic location on the beach which can be maintained better. - Location, location, location
Breakfast reasonable.
Responsive Neemrana management Wall was leaking from the top and one whole
wall was stained and fungus infected. This was in one of the two rooms we booked.
On complaining, a refund was made for that room. Neemrana central management was responsive and that was appreciated.
- Robert (10/5): An exceptional period property on one of Tamil Nadu’s undiscovered stretches of coastline. - So many things! After the bustle of Chennai and Pondicherry, the Bungalow was a glorious escape into peace and rest. Tranquebar is a very quiet village with a fascinating history, which allowed me to gain some cultural time combined with relaxation at the hotel. The hotel was in excellent condition and had been maintained like a colonial villa, with antique furnishings and art; the rooms are set around a veranda with garden or sea views. Bed was comfortable and the French doors let in the light and sounds of the coast. Food was exceptional. I enjoyed fresh coffee delivered to my room. The danish fort and museum are right next to the hotel. Perhaps the highlight were the staff: every interaction I had was a delight. From the security man on the gate, to the manager, to the housekeeping, all ready to help with the slightest request and with broad smiles. I wish I’d had another few nights here. Nothing.

- francois (5/5): - The property is beautiful and peaceful The price vs the service
- Emily (9/5): Beautiful hotel and very comfortable for a couple of nights escape from busier towns. - Beautiful building and grounds, right on the coast and the beach. Very spacious and comfortable bedrooms with access to stunning wrap around balcony. Pool area is great to relax. Staff were friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent. It’s a special place, but highly priced.
- Karthikeyan (8/5): -
- Mayanka (7/5): Good -
- Vinod (9/5): Superb -
- Denis (3/5): Poor - localisation, swimming pool not clean, not good food, poor breakfast, poor value for money overall, overall not well maintained
- Arun (9/5): Quite stay in luxury by the sea - The heritage vibe of the hotel was excellent. The bathrooms could have been more modern
- Vidya (7/5): Good -
- Rakesh (7/5): Good - Chlorine too high, got eye infection
- Binoy (9/5): Superb -
- Saswata (8/5): Very good -
- Lesley (7/5): Charming Danish villa with stunning wrap around veranda overlooking the sea - This was once a grand house with high ceilings etc. The property is charming. Lots of antiques and history A fabulous upstairs verandah to view and hear the sea Bedroom had very high doors which opened onto the verandah where we sat to watch the sunrise Unfortunately the pool area/garden is seriously neglected. The sun loungers had to be washed down due bird droppings. Some of the tables and chairs were so rusty, almost collapsing, one could not use. The lawn needed to be cut and cleaned up. The pool although perhaps quite old, was on the other hand very clean and a good size. Not a person in sight for any form of service. We also had great difficulty communicating with the sweet young waiters who could not understand our food orders therefore numerous mistakes. However I would stay again as it is a special place. Just needs someone to properly oversee the property
- Whitehead (5/5): With a bit of training and work it could be amazing, feels neglected - Location was amazing close to the sea, and to sit on the balcony to watch the waves was stunning. especially in the evening wathcing people gatering to see the sun go down, was lovely. The rooms are lovely and spacious. Service was lacking and we expected so much more from a Neemrana Hotel having visited others in the portfolio, our overall impression that this one has been neglected by the owners for some time.
1. Dinner was ordered for 7.30 and finally arrived at 8.30 on our first night, we specifically asked for it earlier the second night and it came just before 8pm, even though others had been served earlier. I was also given the wrong dish and no staff remain,so when they did realise they brought the correct one, swapping a chicken for a paneer one, and giving the dish that had been sat on our table for ten minutes to another guest.
2. Lunch and Breakfast were erractic with no one in charge, at breakfast the jar labelled honey was empty I asked for some but it didn't arrive and was still empty the following day, we had to go into the kicthen to request eggs, no one clears plates when guests leave the table so the crows pounce and walk all over the tables which stood uncleared for up to 30 minutes, highly unhygenic and unpleasant.
3, At lunch on the day we arrived the area was filled with smoke from a smouldering leaf pile in the garden, I noted a previous guest had mentioned this a week or so earlier and response from the hotel was that it would be addressed, clearly not.
4. Why put Nespresso machines in the rooms but not give you any coffee pods ? it would be nice to leave a couple and then charge for any extras, but to charge for them seems mean and churlish when charging the prices for the rooms.
5.The bill was incorrect on check out, being charged for a meal that we didnt have, being told it had been charged to our room (was not our problem), we had also been charged for things which we didn't have such as a dessert which wasn't available. I would advise anyone to check their bill carefully.
6. Its not obvious that there is no bar and no alcohol available.
7. There was a dog wandering around with chain attached- begging at the tables at breakfast time.
- Philippe (10/5): Exceptional - Fantastic hotel and area as if we were back in XVIII century
- Helen (8/5): Best place to stay in Tranquebar from what we saw elsewhere, right on the beachfront - Wonderful location overlooking the sea and the Danish Fort. Lovely to have supper on the first floor balcony, cool with lovely views. Rooms are decorated beautifully in colonial style, spacious and well appointed. Good pool. Food at supper was excellent. Both days we were there, the gardeners were burners garden material and plastic in the garden with the wind blowing the smoke over the swimming pool and breakfast area on the terrace which was not pleasant and smelly. Gardens themselves were only well tended in part of the property, rest was a bit scrubby.
- Adrian (8/5): A tranquil oasis in tranquil Tranquebar - A lovely property in the calm oasis of Tharangambadi. Delightful staff gave us a very warm and generous welcome. Food is delicious!
- Syed (9/5): Superb -
- Tobias (9/5): Superb -
- Kumar (7/5): Good -
- Avijit (7/5): Pretty pleasant for a two day stay. If possible, ensure a first-floor room. - The location is one of the finest that any hotel anywhere can have. You can hear and see the waves and feel the bay's wind on your face as you have tea in the verandah. The hotel about 100m from the beach, which is pretty clean and unspoiled. It is also a stone's throw, literally, from the Danish fort, which is Tranquebar's top, though not only, historical attraction. The room was neat, decent-sized, though not elephantine as it was named, and well-maintained. There's even an expresso machine in the room. The bathroom was neatly stocked with first-rate toiletry. The food, especially the southern snacks and the Indian seafood dishes, were good, but in my book, not memorable. The staff is pretty courteous. Overall, a pretty pleasant stay in pretty pleasant surroundings. We reached the hotel around 2.50 pm. By the time, the formalities were over it was 3.05 pm. We asked for some sandwiches but the kitchen had closed. We had to wait for the chicken nuggets till 4.30 pm. The staff was aware that we were coming, I had spoken to them around 1 pm. Surely, something could have been arranged. But that's a minor quibble. We would have also preferred a room on the first floor, but they were fully occupied by a tv crew. I guess someone has to stay on the ground floor too. Which are quite good too. In any case, you can also go upstairs and have your coffee there.
- Jayabalan (8/5): Very good -
- Varun (9/5): Superb - The wifi was pretty bad. The network was also bad so it wasn't good for working.
- Lakshminarayanan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sumi (8/5): Comfortable scenic - Stunning location charming property A little old.
- Samuel (8/5): Very good -
- Truecolours (8/5): Food, sun, sea and a great getaway - Comfortable stay and the food was above par!! Thought there's nothing to do around the place this bungalow made us feel at home and we just lounge around and used the pool. Perfect getaway right by the beach. Was all good. Maybe a few more activities could help make the stay more enjoyable.
- Amrita (8/5): Very good -
- Ashvin (5/5): A decent get away on the east coast road. - This is the only property on the east coast road between nagapattinam and pondichery. It used to be a good property. Can see that it is run remotely by a head office from Delhi. It is not worth the price. Everything in the rooms are broken. The property is run down. This property is one of those failed opportunities at a legacy property.
- Shaji (8/5): Very good - The property and location! The Food was just ok...
- Ron (6/5): - old and not modernized to present time
- Venkateswaran (8/5): Very good -
- Anandhi (9/5): Superb - Very nice place near the beach.
- Mettu (8/5): Very good - Exceptional location by the sea. It is a nicely restored building converted into a hotel.
Staff were very helpful and attentive.
Ala carte menu was good and the quality of food was excellent.
- Vinod (9/5): Lovely and we will be back - Breakfast was good with an excellent spread. Enjoyed the same. Your dinner food specially the continental could have been better.
- Dr. (8/5): Very good - Great location, right on the beach, great food and courteous staff in a heritage property soaked in history. No gym, no activities besides food and beach. But is was still great.
- Venkatesh (7/5): Good, plesant stay - good staff - nice food
- Mohamed (8/5): Salutary day with garden view. - The location was good. Nice sea breeze. Good for sunrise. Garden view is pretty upsetting. They need to uplift cleanliness.
- Amitrajit (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gowrishankar (9/5): Very good overall - Location. The beach view was amazing. Food choices for vegetarians could be better
- Nimalaraj (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing location
Beautiful furniture and decor
Very tasty breakfast
Exceptionally helpful and friendly staff
- Brenda (8/5): Fabulous location, delightful rooms. - The location was superb, views of the Bengal Sea and the old Danish Fort. Rooms were a good size and furnished in old colonial style which we loved. Grounds & pool were spotless. Breakfasts had a good selection, they even provided French pressed coffee. Ahh, the lovely staff were young and inexperienced, they would have performed to their potential given proper oversight. They wanted to please but no-one in the hotel was fluent in English which caused one or two misunderstandings. We were there for 3 nights and grew very fond of them all.
- Ajay (10/5): Exceptional -
- Admin (9/5): One of the jewels in the coromandel coast - Location Nothing
- Ramanathan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nathalie (10/5): Unique - Everything perfect
Dedicated staff.
Preserved spot. Payment problem.
Difficulties with the bills and undue debit.
- Bharathi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nicolai (7/5): Good -
- Nathalie (10/5): Mémorable - Heritage.
Unique hotel. Thanks to the founder.
Dedicated staff, from the arrival till departure.
Good food.
- Nathalie (10/5): Unique - Excellent on all levels.
- Diane (9/5): Lovely colonial property with sea views. - Our room with its veranda overlooking the sea provided a welcome respite after three weeks of sometimes hectic travel. A lovely restored colonial property. The manager spoke good English and was helpful. There were lots of flies at mealtime at the tables on the ground floor (all meals are served outdoors). Fast fans helped some. Meals could be confusing. The young men who were the wait staff tried to please but may not be well trained and had limited English. (1) Our first night a menu was brought to us as we sat outside our room. They came back later and we ordered. A little later we were told told they would bring the food to the table on the veranda in 45 minutes. But 15 minutes after that we were told that our dinner was ready downstairs. (2) We could order our first lunch from the menu but on the second day could only do a buffet because they were also serving a tour group. There is no reason not to have told us at breakfast. (3) We were told that our second dinner would be ready by 7:30. It didn’t arrive until 8:15 which was not a problem for us but we should have been told. (4) We’d ask for a bottle of water and it would be brought but not glasses. All of this was more amusing than upsetting to us but fussy people with high service expectations may not be happy here.
- Aparna (10/5): - We really loved staying at this very unique place. The building which housed a British collector's office has been meticulously renovated preserving the original aura. The rooms are spacious, clean and open into a sea facing verandah. The front desk staff are very accommodating and helpful. The food was exceptional. We would very highly recommend the bungalow on the beach to everyone looking for a peaceful relaxing place.
- Ashish (9/5): Very nice but they need to inform that their logistics support outside is low - They need to tell us that they do not have a liquor license . It’s remote so we have to be logistically self contained By the sea a glass of wine is adding to Life’s pleasure !
- Sridhar (9/5): Superb -
- Karthik (6/5): Love the location. - Location, Needs more upkeep.
- Srikanth (7/5): More like a club in a big city. Except for the location, there was nothing to write home about. - Excellent location. Great view of the sea and the fort. There was mould on the curtains. The staff was lazy and least helpful. They had to ask the manager for everything and he was seldom available. Only one staff who was doing his hotel management was switched on and did a great job.
- Shwetha (10/5): Exceptional - The location of the property, the facilities, the staff are very courteous the breakfast spread is good
- Ravi (9/5): Superb -
- Denise (7/5): Beautiful property from a bygone era. - The setting of this hotel is just amazing, It is right on the shore with beautiful views of the waves. The whole hotel is in a fort area which has a church and several points of interest. The hotel is beautifully maintained and the staff is polite and obliging.
- Jacob (8/5): We enjoyed a relaxed holiday. The staff were very accommodating. - The old style rooms. The staff were very good.
- Amrutha (8/5): Fantastic - Everything was good - the place is brilliant. Service could have been a bit better
- Parthasarathy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Giuseppe (8/5): Very good -
- David (3/5): disappointing for a Neemrana property - location and overall ambience run down as compared to prior visits…awful breakfast for the rates charged…incompetent staff
- Anjali (1/5): My stay was so terrible that I will not be recommending this property to anyone ever. - Nothing except the location, and the property can’t really take credit for that. Everything needs vast improvement! The swimming pool was teeming with dead and live insects, the water in the bathroom was grey water that stank bad, the staff was totally inept and ‘forgot’ too many things, the food was limited and certainly nowhere near the mark. The chef admits to not knowing how to cook certain dishes on the menu. The kitchen closes in the afternoon despite their menu declaring it’s an all day menu. There is no indoor dining and the flies outside make it compulsory to have the fan on full speed else they get in your food in droves. Neemrana is doing a terrible job here.
- Kamaljit (9/5): Superb - The one factor which needs to be improved is the meals. If it wasn't for this one factor The Bungalow on the Beach would be a 10.
- George (9/5): Superb - Beautiful Location, Amazing Hotel, Wonderful Food and Great Staff!
- Sruthilaya (8/5): Very good - Service, ambience, food, location Needs a little up keeping in terms of the pool, improvement on food availability is required
- Subramaniam (9/5): Superb -
- Dami (9/5): Awesome relaxing fun and great - I loved the location. The service was excellent. There was nothing that I did not like. Everything was good
- Ramesh (8/5): Pleasant - Key reason as to why these small boutique hotels sustain is the STAFF there. They wall ere extremely good, and i would like to highlight one Mr. Vinodh, (Facility Manager) who goes out of the way to meet all the expectations of the guests. Food choice could be better,
- Vishal (8/5): Very good -
- Palanikannan (9/5): Great place to stay - Its an excellent European style beach front property with a pool - all very well maintained. Takes you back in time with heritage look and furnishings. Very courteous staff and special mention of new joinee Riyaz Ali should be made. Food was excellent and taste was perfect. Can stay here and do a spiritual tour with famous temples, dharghs and churches with in a short driving distance. Everything looked good
- Nagarajan (10/5): One word - Amazing - Amazing place , hospitality is great. Nothing , everything is amazing. Keep it up
- Vijay (10/5): AMAZING property and the food is a highlight - The property is fantastic if you wanted a short getaway.. the staff, food, location is unmatched.. simply superb! nothing at all.. love to go back again
- Rajkumar (9/5): Superb -
- Vargheese (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chandramouli (9/5): surprisingly nice spot - location and the way the rooms are furnished.
excellent cooling with AC lack of staff
- Kavitha (7/5): Good - Great location. Friendly staff The food could be improved. Chapathi's were hard. Onion pakoda had a lot of food colouring added. Premises could be maintained cleaner.
- Kavin (8/5): Very good -
- Pia (9/5): Very memorable ... stunning view from the balcony - Tthe staff was super accommodating The breakfast - would be better with more local food. ... even just offer some of the delicious coconut water you have in abundance on the property
- Daniel (8/5): Very good -
- Radhakrishnan (4/5): Great location....Very expensive....Bad service... Property poorly maintained - The property was a very old building....located on the beach...But very poorly maintained...For this tarrif it is very expensive...Service is very poor.. garden and surrounding not at all maintained....For many years not maintained Very poorly maintained
- Ben (9/5): A tranquil escape for a weekend, an ideal escape to write a novel from start to finish. - Bungalow on the Beach is an intriguing place to stay for an escape, as a short part of a holiday or for a real escape from it all. Don’t expect to have every luxury you are used to because that would be unfair and impossible, plus spoil its unique beauty. But there is Wi-Fi 95% of the time so you are never marooned.
If you are a European tourist, I am, take time out to get there and travel back in time to what top Indian hotel stays were like in the 60s,70s,80s. We only stayed two nights and loved it. The food was really good and fresh, especially the fruit. All rooms are furnished to fit in with the charm of Tranquebar and the Bungalow. The swimming pool is very dated, but was very clean, which is all part of that rustic charm you may want to escape to.
The location is very special. Adjacent to a Danish fort/trading station , there is local history to explore and be educated by. An incredible beach stretches south from the fort that disappeared into the horizon. So if you are looking for a high activity holiday, don’t go there because you will ruin it. But it is perfect for a long run at dawn. If you want to chill out on the verandah, dip in the pool when you can be bothered, read books in peace and quiet, be disturbed by teas, coffees and lime sodas, I suggest you might like Bungalow on the Beach.
The staff are all very polite and helpful. The locals, who visit the beach especially at weekends are very sweet. Make sure you let them take selfies with you to take home. That’s as tough as it gets at Tranquebar. It takes awhile to get there, about three hours from Pondicherry due to road works for a new highway in the southern section, but you know what? You might just prefer seeing the local countryside on the way down now before highway completion when you will just hammer past it all on a fast highway. The last half hour of winding roads are a delight to see.
- Roy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Puzhakkal (9/5): Great place to stay - very good property, nostalgic, will definitely bring back good old memories. - Location, Property, Food and ambiance. Swimming pool
- Umah (5/5): Passable -
- Siva (8/5): Superb - Location was near to the sea
- Sangeetha (9/5): Romance by the beach - Loved the location and the architecture of the property
Loved the bed 💕
Food was really good. We had catch of the day which was served with herb rice cooked to perfection The pressure washer and shower head were clogged. Upkeep a bit lacking
- Dr (7/5): Good -
