Guest Reviews
- Karen (10/5): - We stayed in one of pet friendly rooms which was lovely built on to the side of the pub and came with out door seating . We had our evening meal in the bar with our spaniel which was lovely .the staff were lovely and made us really welcome
- Jill (10/5): - Room was clean, plenty of parking, food excellent and staff very welcoming and friends.
Shower room could do with a little tło, but nothing drastycznie.
- Elisabeth (10/5): - Superb pub with rooms some of which are pet friendly. The bar area was open to dogs and we met quite a few well behaved pooches. The food is the same whether restaurant or bar and is excellent. The breakfasts are worthy of mention, eggs were delicious. Staff are lovely helpful and seem very happy in their work. They could not do enough for us. Excellent large car park with quick access to reception. Needless to say surrounded by beautiful scenery, Lakeland views and set in a quiet location . Brilliant short break.
- Julie (8/5): - Lovely stay but room 3 too close to kitchen area constant smell of seafood , I would definitely stay again but would request a different room , I have stayed before room 5 which was excellent, staff and service received were excellent , lovely area , would definitely recommend
- Evelyn-Anne (10/5): - What a great find in Winster. The Brown Horse Pub did not disappoint.
We stayed in the external King room ( non pet) and it was lovely, clean and tidy with daily housekeeping. The bed was very comfortable and plenty of tea and coffee supplied with biscuits 😀.
The private patio was a bonus with great views.
The cooked breakfast was absolutely delicious and cooked fresh, with plenty of choices. Plus you also got continental breakfast additions of fruit, yogurt, cereal selection, juice, pastries that were warm , fresh bread for brown and white toast, lovely fresh coffee and tea.
The main dinner menu had a great selection, and accommodated to all. We dinned in each night instead of going into Windermere, that’s how nice the food was. A good selection of beer and wines plus spirits in the bar .
The staff, well they were all first class!
Friendly, helpful and always smiling.
What’s not to like about this pub, beautiful inside with wooded beams and comfortable seating. Outside with plenty of garden seating and the view was amazing.
We will return here and we cannot recommend The Brown Horse Pub enough.
Just a note : The pub is dog friendly and there are the woodland Pods at the rear of the Pub ( but we did not look at those)
Stayed in External Room 7 from 22.09.2025 to 26.09.2025

- Stuart (8/5): - Had a lovely stay, friendly bar, not too keen on pre ordering your breakfast before you have your evening meal the night before when you are hungry then feel bad because you didnt finish the food you ordered.
- Henry (10/5): Lovely weekend away - Excellent weekend at the brown horse inn. Really friendly staff, great food and drink and a lovely spot. The bedroom was big enough and very comfortable. Excellent breakfasts. Service in the restaurant was always friendly and accommodating.

- Gail (10/5): Great stay! - We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay and would return if we were in the area again. The room was beautifully decorated and spacious. Breakfast was excellent- we didn't have an evening meal.
- Kazuo (10/5): - Thank you for kind hospitality.
- Glyn (10/5): - There was a hiccup during check in due to the hotel not receiving the message about our dog staying with us. The hotel think this is due to Expedia not passing on the message. Anyway, the hotel quickly dealt with the problem and we had a lovely time. The food was excellent.
- Monica (10/5): - I loved the property and the available walk nearby. Also, getting to destinations in the area was pretty easy.
- Farivar (10/5): Beautiful Location! - Lovley experience in the heart of nature. Awesome dishes!
- Monica (10/5): Brilliant stay - Lovely room. Clean and homely. The shower in the bathroom brilliant as I love a “power shower”. The staff were friendly and helpful at all times. Couldn’t fault anything
- Mark (10/5): - Friendly staff, Clean Room - Pub is really nice, Good Food
- 297carolw (10/5): Big yum - A hidden gem amongst the glorious landscape. We had the gammon and chips it was worthy of a Michelin rating absolutely sublime and the pineapple chutney was a genius idea. Staff very friendly. Highly recommended. So glad we found this place
- ANNIE (10/5): - Staff are extremely lovely, can't do enough for you. The room was beautiful and the little touches made it feel very special. The food was out of this world. Can't say enough about our stay.
- Helen (10/5): Thank you!! - We had a lovely stay and was just perfect for the dogs and loved our little patio area infront of the room!
- Amber (10/5): - Very good stay will definitely be back
- L5961KFjanetc (10/5): A fabulous spot to stay.…., - We’ve just got back from a fantastic couple of days staying in one of the cabins. The food has been scrumptious, combined with delightful wine and a really friendly team. We stayed in dog friendly accommodation and had a wonderful mini break celebrating my husbands birthday. We’ll definitely stay again. Thank you ❤️
- 946binnyl (10/5): Great Food - We have just spent a week near Windermere as a family and had two lovely meals at the Brown Horse Inn. Excellent food and friendly staff. We will come back as soon as possible. We had a variety of options from the menu, they have some nice vegetarian options. Fish and chips, ravioli with wild garlic pesto, chicken burger, all delicious
- Jill (10/5): First short break with our dog - Lovely dog friendly room. Food amazing as was service in the restaurant.
- global-golfer (10/5): Great Two Night Break - Excellent 3 Star hotel with great food. Special thanks to Sarah for her excellent service who went above and beyond helping my wife and myself before and during our stay. All staff were very friendly and attentive. Lovely rural location, would return for a second visit.
- LancashireMrsKBG (10/5): 5 star experience - From warm welcome from staff, to every morsel of food, this was 5 star experience. Lovely atmosphere and each course was stunning. Waiter was so helpful and happy to chat about the pub and the food. Reasonably priced menu and plenty of choice. Fabulous
- Linda (10/5): Lovely few days away - Enjoyed our stay very much, I liked our room which was outside the main hotel, my only comment was it could do with modernising inside with a coat of paint
- G3orginaS (10/5): Fabulous Sunday lunch in a quaint country pub - We spotted this beautiful pub on our drive past and soon googled the number to book in for Sunday lunch the next day. We’re so glad we did. Such a quaint, cosy pub with a lovely atmosphere and excellent service. The Sunday roast was delicious and we can’t wait to visit again on our next trip to the Lake District.
- angelacY789SH (10/5): The Pods @ The BROWN HORSE 🐎 - Spent the loveliest few days at the Pods at the Brown Horse Hotel Winster in the heart of the Lake District.
This is local to me but felt like a million miles away from anywhere, we stayed in the Oresstt Head pod which is one of eight and is set just minutes from the pub up a little path, all the Pods have local names of places and are all individual.
Our pod was just perfect for the weekend and I would certainly recommend to anyone near or far definitely a little gem to be found.
- Pandamedic (10/5): Great stay & Dog Friendly - We stayed here for a couple of nights and had a dog friendly room.
Car park is large, but does fill up as it's for staying guests and visitors to the pub and restaurant.
Check in was easy and pleasant. The gentleman showed us to our room and where everything was.
Room, was a good size, very clean, and beautiful decor and style. Good sized TV, and free tea and coffee facilities.
Bed was comfortable and cozy and had a good nights sleep.
Bathroom was clean and came with amenities to use. The shower was a rainfall shower head and had plenty of pressure to it. Hot water took a bit of time to start coming through though, so assume the boiler is further away, but once it came through it never rain out.
Bar and restaurant area was nice. Very busy. If you plan on dining, it's worth booking.
We ate on one night, and the service and food was great.
Room came with breakfast which is served in the restaurant area. There was good selection of continental style breakfast items, as well as cooked to order hot food.
The hot breakfast tasted great. Would have liked 2 sausages instead of 1 with my full english though.
Oh, the french doors to the room has privacy film. So during the day you can see out, but can't really see in. Just remember though at night, you can't see out, but you can see in, as it's lighter inside then the outside darkness.
- Martin (10/5): Excellent again - Another very enjoyable & relaxing overnight stay. Dinner and breakfast excellent as always
- W5490PJsuep (10/5): Excellent stay - My husband and I have just spent 3 nights at The Brown Horse, Winster, we couldn't fault it at all! The room and bed were extremely comfortable and spotlessly clean, the staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was amazing and the restaurant/ bar food in the evening was superb, make sure to book your table on a Saturday, it was very busy!
- Alex (10/5): - Fabulous weekend away with our dog at The Brown Horse. The staff here are fabulous. From check in to check out efficient and friendly. Praise must go to the restaurant and bar staff for just being so professional and friendly.
The chef here knows how to cook with a spin on pub classics.
Highly recommended.
- jackhB600ZV (10/5): A classy place to stay! - We have stayed at The Brown Horse, Winster, on numerous occasions and it is one of our favourite special places in The Lake Disrict.
It’s a cosy, rustic, warm and welcoming country pub that’s just far enough away from the bustle of Bowness but yet close enough if you want to explore the bars and restaurants. We have always had a warm welcome and the staff are on hand to help (this time we needed scissors and an iron and nothing was too much trouble!).
Our room was clean, spacious and the tea, coffee and biscuits were appreciated after a busy night out! Breakfast, as always, was immaculate with a large selection of fresh fruit juice, pasties and cereals and then a freshly made to order fry up. The atmosphere is very relaxed.. think log fires, walkers having afternoon drinks and the smell of Sunday dinner being prepared was just divine (this is on our list for next time).
I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to recommend The Brown Horse to anyone and we can’t wait to return at Christmas.
- 444AMC (10/5): Delightful stay in a popular country pub - Delightful stay at the Brown Horse Inn, 5 minutes drive from Lake Windermere in a quiet location. Very popular - always a good sign. We had a lovely room (No 5) with views over the fields and rolling hills. Nothing was too much trouble and David gave us some good advice about where to go, including Beatrix Potter's house, Hill Top and the flagship Lakeland store which were close by. Excellent dinner in the evening (including a truly amazing cheese & almond souffle) and a delicious full English breakfast the following morning. Our thanks to Jake, Lucy, Michael, Craig, David & Shaun the award-winning chef! Parking is available at the rear, there's a beer garden in front (great views from the terrace) and a play area for kids at the back. We'd love to stay again one day.
- Theodore (10/5): - What a beautiful, but remote location. Our terrace room were outstanding! The views oar breathtaking. The restaurant was busy but had good selections fast, accurate service. Really enjoyed our stay.
- Rebecca (10/5): Great base for Windermere outings - What a find! Beautiful rural location just outside the Bowness business & within an easy drive of west Windermere. Our room was beautifully decorated & spotlessly clean. The food at the pub was excellent & the service friendly but unobtrusive. The only downside for us was that although the outside room with patio was dog friendly there was nowhere on site to safely let our dog off lead. Otherwise we would definitely be back to stay again.
- Jayakrishnan (10/5): - Excellent service and good food (we only had breakfast), and quite nice, modern style accommodation in their independent "pods". About 10 minutes drive from Bowness Pier, which is easy if you have a car. If not, you have to call a taxi; there is no bus stop or train station in a walkable distance. This can be a challenge during peak hours, with long waits so you have to plan your day well and call in advance.
- Hannah (8/5): A lovely base for exploring the Lakes - The Brown Horse was a lovely place to spend a couple of nights while our family of three explored the local area. The room was a good size, with a modern ensuite bathroom. It was pretty clean, although some of the fabrics could do with a good dust as I couldn't stop sneezing. The bed could have been more comfortable as it was quite firm, but perhaps that's just a preference. The food was top notch. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast both mornings, which you're asked to preorder the evening before. We also ate dinner one evening and it was delicious. There is a play area for children to enjoy, with benches for adults to relax while supervising the children.
- James (10/5): - We had a great stay. The room was just what we expected. It was clean comfy and had a nice view out to the countryside.
- Paul (10/5): Nice - Was lovely apart from the ladies toilets in the bar needs a lot of work
- STEWART (10/5): Hidden Gem - Great pub in the Lakes District both for accommodation and food.
- Jeanette (10/5): - We’ve never been to this area of Cumbria. We normally stay around towns. The Inn is very rural but it is easy to get to Bowness on Windermere by car. Our room was lovey and clean, the bed was comfortable, the shower was great, the views were amazing and the staff were friendly and polite.
- S H (10/5): Would definitely return! - Lovely little inn, not too loud at night. Nice vieww of the hills. The ataff were friendly, the food was delicious amd the bed was comfy!
- Kimberly (10/5): - Lovely pub, fabulous staff and excellent food
- Deirdre (10/5): Great stay in a great location - We had a lovely stay at the Brown Horse. Our family room was lovely, the staff were very helpful and friendly and the food was outstanding.
- Lou (10/5): The Brown Horse Inn - Gorgeous hotel really friendly the only downside for me was the hard pillows but that’s personal preference. Food in the bar was outstanding as was breakfast which was fresh. Will be back again in the summer!
- DAVID (8/5): Great night - Fabulous staff
- Compass27716586549 (8/5): Midweek break - Pleasant room. Only downside very cold when we went in. Disappointing as we were asked, and gave, our arrival time to ensure 'a warm welcome'!
Lovely dinner & excellent breakfast. The hotel looked very Christmas.
- Katherine (10/5): - Idyllic location for a cozy inn & pub with welcoming and helpful staff.
- Ian (10/5): Relaxing getaway - A fantastic stay, friendly staff beautiful setting, great food
Our dog boycie was spoilt as well sausages every morning woofs from him
- nothingcomestomind (10/5): Comfortable room, great shower. - Very comfortable room and great shower. Superb breakfast and very good staff. Next time I would take a plug extension - there are 2 on each side of the bed (lights and phone chargers) and 2 behind the tv (tv and light). Not a huge issue but a faff for plugging in the hairdryer and kettle - really nitpicking here as it was a great stay and we would highly recommend.
- Steve (10/5): Dog friendly - Excellent stay with our cocker spaniel. We ate in the bar twice and the food and service was brilliant. Highly recommended
- Sarah (10/5): - Great stay at the Brown Horse Inn
Comfy beds and great location to Bowness-on-Windermere
- tinylwong (10/5): A place who cares about its guests. - We spent two nights as part of our anniversary visit to the Lakes. On the 2nd night, our car broke down at Kirkstone Pass. Decamping back to the hotel by taxi, the hotel staff were extremely accommodating and did much to help upon hearing our plight. They allowed us to push back our check out to a later time, and booked a table at the pub so that my wife and little boy have somewhere to hang about whilst I sorted out the stricken car. We could not be more thankful enough to everyone, and can truly say that this is a place that cares it's guest.
As for the stay itself, nice comfy room, fabulous food. We learnt that it is a well known place locally and it certainly lives up it's reputation.
- Sanjeev (10/5): - Great location, pleasant staff, good service
- Sarah (10/5): - Quiet lovely pub- the rooms are comfortable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Worth the stay - Great staff and hotel. Rooms were clean and and bathrooms looked new.
Road noise is quite loud and you can get some smokers outside the pub causing fumes to flow into your room which is not a fault of the hotel.
- pieeater22 (6/5): Nice pods, but not for us….. - The pods are beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean, they are also at the bottom of the pub car park, albeit a very leafy car park!
The pub is more of a restaurant and so gets very busy with diners so it’s not really somewhere you can wile away an evening if that’s your thing, you would really have to drive to find another cosy pub or spend it in your compact/cosy pod.
The pub required payment for breakfast the night before and at £16 each for a fry up we expected quite a feast….Tables were laid out in the pub, no real friendly welcome, we sat down the breakfasts arrived then we were told we had to make our own toast. It was fine. However the sausage was excellent!
The evening we arrived I wanted a shower but found that the cold water was barely existent in the bathroom so the shower was scorching hot, we tried the following morning with the same issue. When we raised this after breakfast the manager/owner did try to fix the problem by offering another pod for me to shower in but we waited for the plumber to arrive (the shower had been newly fitted the day before) but he confirmed there was an issue with cold water supply to the bathroom. His solution was to turn the boiler down so we had a fairly warm drippy shower. That was really the last we heard from them….I didn’t really want to continue staying there, so even though we had paid for two nights we left after one and found a place we were thrilled with for the next three nights.
- Paul (10/5): - Had been for lunch on another trip to the lakes, came back for a stay. Good value, warm welcome and spacious clean room.
- Derek (8/5): - Everyone working there was extremely friendly and the food was very good and reasonable
- L (10/5): - Everything was excellent as always
- 681zachc (10/5): WOW! - What a place! Definitely a hidden gem.
Rural location, easy accessible into Bowness if needed, but in all fairness, there is no need to leave the place, especially if staying for just one night. Food menu and daily specials catered for all, I must say the food was fantastic, really impressed.
We had Pork Belly as a starter, for mains curried cod off the specials, and Tomapork Chop, with a side of Haloumi fries and it didn't disappoint. One of the best meals we have ever had.
Friendly staff from start to finish that went above and beyond, really helpful throughout the stay. At a busy time, one of the staff kindly showed us around one of the newly built pods as we were already planning our next visit. We were that impressed with this place, we booked our next stay before we left.
Would recommend to anyone wanting quality food in a really pleasant country pub. There is a reason why they have been voted the best pub and bar award in Cumbria, and will have every chance at the Nationals.
- Zoe (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing stay, lovely room in a beautiful location. Breakfast and evening food was exceptional. Staff very friendly
- Suzanne (10/5): Best little inn in the Lake District! - We loved our stay at The Brown Horse Inn! In fact, it was the most charming and most comfortable beds our party of 5 slept in!
We loved the dinner and the breakfast too!!! Highly recommend it!
- Geoffrey (10/5): A simple one night stay was perfect. - A simple one night stay in the family room was exactly as hoped for. Lovely room, welcoming host, comfortable beds, lots of tea and coffee in the room. Bar with a wide slection of local brews, plus international selection. De to the nature of our visit we were unable to sample the menus for dinner and b reakfast, but what was seen looked very good'
- Christine (10/5): - Stay here regularly, Craig and team superb as always. Stayed in pod first night and external room with little patio two nights - very relaxing just what was needed
- Guy (10/5): - Beautiful room and views and great food
- Dallyg (10/5): Excellent Food and friendly and attentive service - a must visit - We were staying in the Pods in the grounds of the Pub. These are fabulous, really comfy beds, fabulous views from your private decking.
We had Dinner on Friday evening and Sunday lunch in the Pub.
Service was top class, really friendly and efficient and the food was fabulous. The Sunday lunch (I had beef) was simply delicious - This is a great place in a beautiful location serving great food and drinks. Highly recommended.
- NORTHERNSOUL2013 (10/5): Another good stay, and Marius you made it for us!! - We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay in room 2. Special thanks go out to 3 members of staff Jake at the bar Kevin and Marius. These guys were so welcoming and friendly and Marius had both myself and wife in stiches at the breakfast table. Nothing from any member of staff was too much trouble, the food was lovely too with a superb breakfast. We can't wait to return. Thanks to all of you.
- bryani64 (10/5): a happy return - We used to be regular visitors to the Brown horse but for some reason we realised that we last stayed there 9 years ago and so we booked a return visit hoping that it would have maintained its high standards.
We were certainly not disappointed , The Brown horse offers really good accommodation and is good value for money , where it really scores is the food which is varied plentiful and excellent .
The atmosphere is great and the Team offering the overall experience are lovely people who cant do enough for you , they are genuine and very efficient
We wont leave it another 9 years
- Bradley (10/5): I'm so glad they had availability! - We booked this place last minute and we're so glad they had availability. From start to finish the staff at The Brown Horse Inn treated us like we were part of the family. Room was modern and came with a great view. Dinner was absolutely amazing - we had the shin of beef with a recommended bottle of red which I'm still dreaming about. The breakfast was also one of the best I've had. We will definitely be back!
- Kimberly (10/5): - All services provided by the brown horse are excellent, facilities, food and staff.
- BH (8/5): Good but not perfect. - Excellent beds and shower.. Room size V.G.. Food excellent. BUT our stay let down by a few details.
ROOM 3 ...had no shelf in bathroom for toiletries etc. No table and socket for the kettle which had to be boiled on floor or at bedside. Kettle difficult to fill from wash basin tap There was inadequate hanging space and no hooks for outdoor coats. No alternative to duvet for beds (blanket option should be made available). Bedside and table drawers too small for clothes. The shower cubicle needs a wall mounted soap dish, the gel provided was not suitable for my wife's allergy. She had nowhere to put her soap.. Door to shower room needs oiling, noisy in middle of the night. ROOM 2 had no easy chair.
These may seem small issues but made our stay less comfortable than it should have been. PLUS they are so easy to fix.

- O9221LCjohnl (10/5): A great find in the heart of the Lakes - A wonderful inn in the heart of the Lake District. The bedroom was tastefully decorated and had great views.
We ate in the restaurant and it was a delightful experience. There was a real buzz about the place, the staff were friendly and efficient and the food was superb.
Can’t wait to return.
- Martyn (10/5): Excellent stay! - The stay was excellent from the second we arrived, the staff were all very helpful and friendly and did everything they could to make the stay a great experience. The food and service for dinner and breakfast was perfect too!
- Carolyn (10/5): Food and staff excellent as usual - The evening food menu and quality was excellent, which is why we chose here again. Cosy relaxing bar and restaurant, the staff are very professional and friendly, brilliant. The room was nice , lovely bathroom
- rod (8/5): 3 day stay - Food was excellent, however not a great selection.
Service and staff extremely efficient
The only fault was the service of the room. On the first day i said to reception don't worry about cleaning the room just make the bed.Sadly that happened every day and we didn't get cups replaced or dirty glasses removed and no fill up of tea coffee etc.
- Jane (8/5): - I can highly recommend booking for dinner whether or not you are staying. Breakfast also perfect. Room was well decorated with quirky features and was pitch black at night, bed comfortable and a good size, hence a good sleep.
- Jeanette (10/5): Brown Horse - Lovely hotel. Great food. Staff so friendly
- Christopher (10/5): - Always friendly
- Keeley (10/5): Wonderful hotel. - Excellent hotel. We loved every aspect; the room was perfect, the food outstanding, setting beautiful. The feel of the hotel was peaceful, welcoming, friendly and easy-going. The standards are extremely high, yet the atmosphere is relaxed, effortless. The staff are so lovely; present, attentive, responsive and we felt totally unpressured. Would highly recommend without reservation.
- carolyn (10/5): Brown Horse - Classic Lakes country inn , good food and friendly hosts. Renovated bathrooms and a very comfortable room.
Wifi is patchy but can get a mobile signal.
- Christine (10/5): - Nice quiet location in the country side with lovely views over the fields. Dinner and breakfast was excellent.
- Susan (10/5): Dog Friendly Stay at The Brown Horse Winster - Very enjoyable stay with friendly staff and made us and our dog very welcome. Super breakfast and excellent meals in the bar restuarant as well. Good choice of ales in the bar. Nice, quiet location but still very easy to get to Bowness, Windermere and beyond. Look forward to returning soon!
- Carole (10/5): Very comfortable stay! - Had a very brief but comfortable stay here. Unfortunately we arrived late due to storm Eunice but the staff very kindly left key our for collection in an envelope at the door. We then had to leave early next morning so couldn’t take full advantage of our breakfast however again the staff came up trumps and made us bacon rolls and coffee to take away. Thank you Brown Horse and sorry our visit was so short.
- samantha (10/5): **Top of the class** - A perfect retreat, nestled peacefully in the hills of Cumbria, The Brown Horse is a MUST for any traveler, thirsty, hungry or tired. Excellent service, friendly staff. Kudo’s to the team & management.
- Patricia (8/5): Lovely stay - Staff friendly food excellent rooms very clean however the courtyard rooms only have a window in the bathrooms so although lots of light from the french doors if you like fresh air at night you have no window to open. One fanlight could be put into the door side panel. Otherwise a lovely stay.
- J M (8/5): September 2021 - Excellent service. Friendly staff and clean room. We also enjoyed the atmosphere in the restaurant in the evening. Food was good too!

- Gemma (10/5): Fantastic getaway - We arrived at the Brown horse in and was greeted by Craig who was lovely and very welcoming he showed us to our room what was absolutely outstanding. We had a small spot outside our room where we could sit and have a few drinks and look at the amazing view. The room was wonderful. It was clean and very comfortable with a lovely modern clean bathroom. The room had all the usual things provided was able to make a brew and hair dryer. We stayed for two nights and booked tables for our evening meals that were absolutely beautiful and returned to our room after our meal to be provided blankets to sit outside and watch the sunset. We were very well looked after by a lovely lady named Lorna who made us feel so welcome and who was always making sure we were ok as did everyone else who worked at The Brown Horse. This was a trip that was definitely needed and it was made super special for us as well. The second night we booked a table for ourselves and so friends who weren’t staying and they too were made to feel extremely welcome. The location of the hotel was perfect as we had activities booked around the area and was a great driving distance and about 7 min drive to lake Windermere. This place will definitely be somewhere we will be booking into again in the future had an excellent time and would definitely recommend. Cat wait to return
