Guest Reviews
- Ben (8/5): - Clean, good price, good location near lots of resturants and cafes. Shared bathroom was clean, and liked that there was a sink in the bedroom. Facillities were a bit old and insulation was not great, both for noise and heat.
- Aidan James (10/5): - Everything was great
- Jared (5/5): Cheap and cheerful you pay for what you get. Don’t expect to be too cosy - Price First impression of the hotel was a homeless man trying all the doors of the rooms
Door was very flimsy
- Chris (8/5): Good 1980s style pub - Friendly staff, great facilities, good locals in the pub, good pubfood, good televisions Too many cobwebs and spiders in toilets and bedrooms, pretty dated... Kind of good that its still operated like a 1980s kiwi pub... Rear area has fat drums overflowing into walkway to woodshed.

- Miyuru (6/5): Good for a one night stay, manageble if you want a quick break - It’s almost at the main road, plenty of parking, closer to all supermarkets, good resturant with beer and gaming. Kind of pub Rooms are very old and dusty. Smell was bad. All the rooms in our side was out of order except ours, including all the showers and toilets. Have to goto other side for a toilet and there was only one at the closest to us and it was having a bad smell when flushed. No soap / liquids in the showers. Less staff and the accomodation also manager by the person who serves the beer!
- Janice (5/5): Tired old hotel great food - 2 friendly staff members and a lovely hot shower.
The di ner on the menu was generous and very nice. The cover on the bed was a single on a double bed and no extra blankets were provided. There was a bath but no taps to fill the bath. Both taps on the basin dripped continuously, the tv could only be tuned to the horse and dog racing channels.
The room I had was near an outdoor bar area for smokers.
An old hotel in need of refurbishing.
- James (4/5): The noise from the pub is hit and miss. - Meals are great from the pub (good value and good quantity) It is a pub, and our adventure racing team have stayed there several times. Unfortunately this year (2026) the pub was pumping and the bedroom was above the pub, so very little sleep before the Rangitikei 12-hour adventure race... mind you it can't have affected us too much because we won the mixed paddle team
- Charles (5/5): Shorter and noisier than I had hoped - Tidy Too noisy. Had to go somewhere else on 2nd night
- Charmaine (3/5): Would not stay here again - The place was all locked up when we arrived. It took a while to get though to booking.com after trying the number of the owners several times with no luck. It was cold and dark. 2 females standing on the street did not feel safe.
- Wiesław (8/5): Fajny hotel w podróży - Hotel oferuje dobre warunki, adekwatne do ceny. Za 50 dolarów nowozelandzkich otrzymujesz skromny, ale czysty i odpowiednio wyposażony pokój. Łazienka i kuchnia są wspólne. W pokoju wygodne łóżko, czysta pościel, umywalka i regulowane ogrzewanie. Personel jest miły, wi-fi działa bez zarzutu, zaś na dole budynku znajduje sie fajna knajpa, do której licznie przychodzą lokalsi. Można dobrze i stosunkowo niedrogo zjeść I się odprężyć. Lokalizacja jest idealna dla podróżujacych samochodem. Polecam tym, którzy akceptują podobne warunki.
- J B (7/5): -
- Ariane (5/5): A place to lay your head for a night - Bathrooms were clean Suboptimal shared kitchen facilities - bins were not emptied
Overpowering smell of fried foods
Quite noisy on a Saturday night
- Rebecca (6/5): It was what we needed for a quick overnight stop but could have been more comfortable. - Easy to find and had great parking. Just what we needed to a quick overnight stop. Maintenance on the building wasn’t great - taps leaked. No soundproofing so could hear when others used the bathrooms. Staff didn’t expect anyone to be checking in so weren’t prepared.
- Simon (9/5): -
- Bruce (1/5): - We arrived to check in and the place was locked up. A business across the road said they are closed on Mondays. Why did they not decline the booking if they were not going to be there to accept guests on Mondays.
Had to find alternative accommodation in a hurry.
- Yvonne (9/5): -
- Lisa (7/5): - Despite first appearances our stay was great. The room was clean and comfortable and superb value for money
- Christopher (8/5): -
- Flo (9/5): -
- Kylie (6/5): - Location was perfect for a one night stopover. The double bed had roll together. While there were four pillows they did not even equal one decent pillow. An up grade here would have made it more bearable lucky I bought my own pillow.
- Xindi (5/5): -
- Scott (8/5): -
- Muirhead (1/5): - Location Noisy. No bar fridge or jug in the room
- stacy (2/5): I want my account credited for the over billing - I was double billed for my stay and can't seem to get this paid back to me. rip off double billing
- Wendy (9/5): - Great location in town, easy to find and so handy for an overnight stay on the way to Wellington.
Staff really friendly and helpful. There was a good choice of meals for dinner, and reasonably price. Overall stay was great value for money. Room and bathroom absolutely clean. A little mirror in our room would have been nice. Pillows a bit small, but we had our own, so all good.
- Petra (7/5): Taihape pure - Staff were friendly.
Great ub food. Some noise from the pub, but it wasn’t too bad.
- Nadège (8/5): Hôtel bien placé, on peut se garer devant et excellent rapport qualité/prix du restaurant, on s’est régalé. - Le restaurant était excellent et le cadre étonnant
- Shona (10/5): Such great welcoming staff.. ! Thanks ! -
- Tejinder (8/5): -
- Ellen (6/5): - Nice meal on site Could use new pillows on the bed.
- Robert (8/5): Very good value - Good old fashioned place, well maintained, comfortable All good
- Leen (7/5): - Nice and delicious dinner. Good location.
- Abraham (9/5): -
- McDonald (7/5): -
- Lucille (9/5): -
- Heather (7/5): Fine for a night or so - Friendly staff, good food on site in the bar & a comfy clean bed. Strange policy for check out as the cleaner tried to get in when we were still in the room!
- Dean (5/5): -
- Scott (10/5): -
- Corey (8/5): - Great value money
- Thomas (10/5): -
- Kimberley (8/5): - Perfect for an overnight stay! Super clean’ Was a very warm night and we only had a pedestal fan! But given the age the building, we didn’t expect air con! It is noisy buy ear plug will help that!
- Latoya (10/5): - I loved my 2 night stay lovely staff lovely people around and some that permanently live there.
Great location easy to get around to places when needed. Actually having to leave is the only thing, I'd definitely come back to stay again
- Chris (7/5): -
- Michel (10/5): - Nice stay in a small town! Thank you:)
- Linda (7/5): - The service Bed uncomfortable
- Owen (7/5): -
- stephen (7/5): - Its a basic country town hotel which has accommodation and a bar and a restaurant. Perfectly adequate without being flashy. Good price for an overnight, nothing promised and nothing missed. Just a good enough place with no frills. Car parking outside. Nice chinese restaurant nearby. We felt safe and secure and comfortable without being Hilton standards.
- Jennifer (8/5): - Great staff, food was amazing
- Nicholas (9/5): -
- Annie (7/5): Friendly staff and locals made this a memorable evening in the heart of rural NZ. Real Kiwis. - Very friendly staff and locals. Good dinner menu in the hotel restaurant and good pool tables. I liked the friendly atmosphere of the good country folk of Taihape where all ages were welcome and they were enjoying a relaxing evening together. Nothing fancy - it’s a very old hotel from the 1930’s - so the facilities are old too, yet very clean.
I have special dietary requirements and the chef cheerfully sorted out a special salad for me to replace the usual one on the menu. One of the window frames in the bedroom needed replacing as there was a gap that couldn’t be closed. However it was not a cold night. It’s a very old building which could do with refurbishing - yet is comfortable, clean and had the basics provided. I could have asked for a different room but it wasn’t worth the fuss.
- paige (10/5): -
- Taha (9/5): - Bar staff was awesome, happy an really welcoming. The rooms were all good.
- Evan (4/5): Passable but nothing to write home about - Room lighting upkeep poor
- Manui (3/5): Felt safe, beds uncomfortable nice staff. - Lady on the bar and checked us is Sat afternoon very friendly and helpful. Nothing worked, TV in room 35 , air con had a burnt smell so we turned it off, fan didn't work. Black small things on the sheets and pillows think they falling from the holes on the roof. Cobwebs and spiders in corners of the room. Bed uncomfortable. Slept on top of bed.
- Kali (8/5): -
- Sarah (9/5): - Always a good time at the Gretna
- Sarah (9/5): This place is always a pleasure - High country hospitality at its humble best
- Kathy (5/5): -
- Jess (10/5): Warm, cozy, comfy, affordable, really helpful staff. - The staff were really friendly and helpful. I was on a bikepacking trip and was so tired by the time I made it to the hotel, and just wanted to rest and dry my clothes. The staff stored my bike securely, prepared me a meal in a takeaway box so I could eat in my room, brought me a clothes rack to dry my clothes, and were just so helpful. Really happy to have stayed here.
- Adrian (6/5): Affordable, average quality - Handy central location, fairly quiet and easy to find. Secure room and heater included helped keep it warm. Kitchen was useful for storing leftovers. Water leaked all over the bathroom floor from the shower. Taps didn't turn off either so sound of water trickling all night.
- Matt (6/5): Perfect place to get some shut eye, Ive travelled the world and this place is perfect the night - Booked the hotel as I was doing work in the area, and just needed somewhere to rest over night, nothing more nothing less. Sheets were crisp and clean, no noise by the time I had finished my work it was midnight head hit the pillow and I was Zzzzzzz alarm went in teh morning I got up and was gone by 0800. I asked what time the hotel and bar closes as I was doing work down the line and I was told, Oh it will be late as its Friday night. My European mind thought oh that will be like 0100. Got back at 22:30 and the place was shut, could have heard a church mouse. Umm bed and the room was on a bit of a lean. Oh and TV is only what the Bar is watching so Sports or TAB racing.
- Cathryn (7/5): - Clean but basic. Great value & good meal in the adjacent bar. Friendly staff, good shower. No mirror in the room, replacement light bulb needed in shower.
- Ellapen (9/5): An unexpectedly enjoyable stay - We were really looked after by the lovely staff and locals, thoroughly enjoyable.
- Kylie (6/5): Great location, price and clean. Great place for a stopover. - The location and the price was just what we were looking for There was a TV room with only one channel and staff did not come to look even after asking. Take your own pillow, pillows were flat.
- sialesiale (10/5): Catch up - We loved the atmosphere, staff location, facilities & the smell of kai on arrival Nothing everything was kapai
- Matthias (8/5): -
- Matt (2/5): I wouldn't stay here again. - The hotel is typical pub hotel accomadation. I like pub hotels, they usually have good character. The lounge was nice and comfortable. There were lots of things we didn't like. The sheets for our bed were covered in dog hair. And the pillows had some kind of dead bugs on it. A "maintenance" man was called to look at the room. He was an old drunk man who didn't know anything (and farted shamelessy in front of everybody) He refused to change the sheets, and tried to move us to a different room with only 1 bed (but there were 3 of us). In his defence he eventually offered us a 50% refund on the room. We took off all the sheets and used our own linen. In the morning he refused to acknowledge our existence.
Unpleasant people were obviously living at the hotel, which didn't help the overall experience.
- Janina (7/5): -
- Shyam (7/5): Met our expectations for one night stay as a stopping point to break our long journey - Very old hotel, motel.
Met our expectations for just one night stay to meet our stopping point to break our long journey. Couldn't experience the pub & food due to late check-in. Great staff communication and were very friendly.
- Jaime (8/5): - Personal amable i ben disposat La cuina una mica descuidada
- Jaime (8/5): -
- Carter (7/5): Rest stop over. - Great stopping point to break your journey. It was like stepping back in time to get a taste of pub life of yesteryear. Great budget accommodation, good pub food and friendly staff. We would stay here again.
- MONICA (3/5): We stayed for the shortest amount of time we could. - To be clear this is a Single Resident Occupancy building NOT a hotel for a family on vacation/holiday. The rooms are above a bar, it smells like grease. The shared/community kitchen was not clean. The room was adequate if you have clear expectations. If you are a backpacker/bikepacker looking to not sleep on the ground for a night and a place to shower this would do just fine. As a family with a child we did not feel comfortable here. We did do an interesting hike in a shared space with sheep not far from the building. The TV was "broken", there were electric blankets but no place to plug them in. It was adequately clean for what it is. Again this is not a hotel for a family on holiday, this is a single residency occupancy building. There were two guys sitting in their cars for hours outside the entrance (maybe using the wifi??) if I had been a single woman on my own this would have felt less safe. This is a very small town with very little to do in the surrounding area.
- Oscar (5/5): Basic accommodation - Comfortable beds and helpful staff It's old and needs a renovation, plus the bathrooms can be distant (there's only a basin in the room)
- Tania (10/5): -
- Donna (7/5): Comfortable - Location friendly check in
- Seno (6/5): - Staff communication I didnt know that toilet and bathroom was a common one.
- Gwen (9/5): Comfortable - No breakfast
- Damijan (10/5): -
- Grant (7/5): -
- Karen (8/5): - Friendly staff
- Dilara (5/5): -
- Wayne (7/5): Fit for purpose and enjoyable - Fantastic evening meal.
Enjoyed being with the locals.
All the staff were so friendly and helpful.
Great price. The noise of the trucks and trains during the the night take some getting used to but that is down to the location of Taihape rather than the Gretna.
- Patricia (10/5): - The place is always really clean. The staff are really friendly and welcoming.
- Sheryl (9/5): Great stopover even though shared bathroom facilities very clean and great value for money. Food was very good too - Old school but very clean fresh linen and wifi
- Russell (8/5): -
- James (8/5): Grenade Hotel - Location, clean and tidy for old hotel, friendly staff.
- Tracy (7/5): -
- Daniel (8/5): -
- James (3/5): Overall the stay at the Gretna/Bates motel was humbling experience - There is little to like at this accomodation, but I guess for the price it was humbling this box is to small to list them all but here is a few examples:
Floors crooked
Walls uneven
Shower riddled with pubes and toe nails
The other shower had a front door as its divider.
- Catherine (10/5): Convenient location half way between Auckland and Wellington. Outstanding value for money. - Suits my modest budget. Quiet room. Basin in room. High quality sheets. Opening window. Good lighting to read by. The pillow.
- Ger (8/5): -
- Bruce (9/5): -
- Gad (8/5): -
- James (7/5): -
- Thomas (10/5): -
- Mosen (9/5): Enjoyable, comfortable and very pleasant - It was quite and comfortable amd the people were very helpful and friendly N/A
