Guest Reviews
- Edward (8/5): - The location was perfect for what we came there for.
The property itself is very old and needs a total renovation. The carpet throughout the facility was filthy and the mildew smell was everywhere. The people we met where very friendly and the staff was very nice. We stayed because there was no where else to stay. Not to mention the annoying siren. For a moment we thought it was "The Purge". The hotel needs a lot of work.
Sorry, just being honest...
- Jaime (6/5): - The inn was cool but not well kept up. Needs some repairs and TLC. They were out of some food and drink each meal. Not the cleanest.
- Margaret (8/5): - Lovely little inn with friendly staff. Very cozy and clean room. Unfortunately next to a fire station which lead to a panic when I heard the sirens about midnight.
- Jennifer (10/5): - I loved this place. There was an update in 2016 and someone made the mistake of getting white carpet. Live and learn. The bed was comfortable, there was a variety of pillows, the tavern shuts down at 9:00 so its all quiet by 11:00 p.m. The tavern is superb. I’d eat there again in a heartbeat. The place is old and has some quirks and that’s something that you either like because you like historical places or you don’t because you like modern things. I’d stay here again.
- John (10/5): - The Historic nature of the property is the NUMBER ONE REASON to stay and return! It's 270 years old AND George Washington and his family DID ACTUALLY STAY THERE!!! The property has all the indications of that advanced age and it is charming and fun. Clean, spacious rooms with updated lovely en-suite. We intend to return in May 2023.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Solo traveler, history buff & nature photographer - There's lots to like about this property, but the staff members really deserve recognition for their outstanding service and absolutely elevate the experience of staying at the Washington Inn and Tavern. The Inn is very quaint, beds were comfortable and parking was easy and plentiful. The common areas are charming and the front porch is a great spot to enjoy this small picturesque town. The food at the tavern was fantastic and service was the best - very attentive and put the needs of the customer first. Breakfast was a one-man show and he really did it all - cooked, served and dished up suggestions of things to do in the area along with directions to get there, too. I enjoyed the historic feel of the Inn, but stayed in a more modernized room with king sized bed. On my next stay, I'd opt for the smaller queen sized room with canopy bed and non-working fireplace just to get more of that historic vibe. Like others have posted, the wall-to-wall carpeting in the upstairs lodging area really needs to be cleaned, but it does help with soundproofing. My room was quiet and I didn't hear any noise from the tavern or common areas downstairs.
- James (10/5): - This is a very charming, old inn and tavern with public areas and rooms that have been brought up to date. The dining (dinner and breakfast) is really good. We will visit this property again.
- Ellen (6/5): - The property is old and historic but needs some restoration and cleaning.
- Denise (4/5): - This property is like a bed and breakfast without the modern amenities. The hotel rooms are on the 2nd floor of a small and narrow stairwell. If you have any issues with climbing floors, please do not choose this hotel. The rooms are nice but small and need to be updated.
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Love the Inn, bummer that we stayed Sunday night when tavern was closed. Your website needs update to indicate that you DO serve breakfast on Monday mornings.
- Jeffrey (10/5): Charming and sweet - It’s a charming hotel and the service was nice.
- Lucas (10/5): - Is next to the fire station the two days we were there the loud alarm went off at 7:04 AM and next day at 6:30 AM that’s how they let the volunteer firefighters know they need them to come in.
- Ellen (6/5): - I liked the room a lot, and the menu was intriguing. However when I arrived there was no staff to assist. I had to get my key from a lock box and navigate the building alone. I never found the parking. It was so disappointing to learn that even though Expedia, Google, and the Inn's own website listed their restaurant as OPEN that evening, it was not. I had to go out and find food in the middle of nowhere. With staff I would give top ratings, but unstaffed I feel mediocre at best.
- Guy (10/5): - Friendly staff, excellent food service in the Tavern. The place is getting a remodel .. beautiful clean bath facility & amenities. Could use a new carpet in the rooms but I’m sure that’s in the planning
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The food was awesome and employees were very friendly and helpful
- Harrison (10/5): - Cutest hotel
- sandra (8/5): - It was is a comfortable stay. It was clean. Staff were very friendly. The restaurant was very good. Checking in and checking out was simple
- Jaimee (10/5): - The inn is beautiful and the staff was very accommodating.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Hidden gem - Love this Inn, historic and charming and a great value for its price. The restaurant a d tavern are wonderful. A hidden gem in this area.
- Stephen (10/5): - Old and new , welcoming in a 200 yes old fashion.
- Eileen (8/5): - There was an owners family emergency. We were called and emailed to make us aware of the problem and our keys were left in a lock box with phone #’s and directions in case of need. The breakfast service was extended until 11:00 for Sunday.
- Debbie (8/5): - Our room appeared very clean, bedding fresh and comfortable, had Keurig coffee maker and fresh bottled water. Bathroom and shower was very neat and clean, with its own heater. Our room was located on first floor right beside the Inn’s tavern and was noisy. Could hear customers and staff talking, dishes being collected, vacuuming. Breakfast was included in our room rate, was very good and wait time was short. Only one wait staff working breakfast orders but she was very friendly and accommodating.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Air raid siren! - The biggest issue is it’s right next door to the volunteer fire department and the call in the volunteers using an air raid siren. If a fit is called in at night, it’s quite the rude awakening!
- Daphne (10/5): Charming Hotel with a nice atmosphere - Beautiful hotel, restaurant/ tavern popular with locals too. A wonderful atmosphere. Breakfast was very good and the staff were friendly. My room was spacious and clean. Thanks for a lovely stay
- Barbara (8/5): - Good restaurant. Friendly service. Hotel basic but clean and comfortable. Located in 200 year old building. Good for stopover en route to south. Town is charming and historic.
- Tyeace (10/5): - I was so pleased with my stay at the Washington tavern. The place was super clean and the staff were incredibly nice. I will defintley refer them to my family memebers and I look forward to staying here again. The included breakfast was a bonus .
- Kim (10/5): - When we arrived we were greeted by a very nice woman who had our keys ready for us. We were happy that they had an on site restaurant bc after a 4 hour drive from NJ we didn't feel like going back out. Our room was clean. The next morning we got a full breakfast for Free and it was good! Usually free breakfast is pastries and coffee/tea. We had pancakes, bacon etc and had te best server Barbie. She was friendly and courteous. If i ever came back to Princess Anne i would stay here! I never stayed at a bed and breakfast before so i'm glad that Washingon Inn was my 1st one.
- Jeanine (10/5): - From the moment we arrived we were impressed. From the warmth of the staff to the unique charm of the historic Inn. Staying at this Inn was like staying in a realitives home where you are always welcome. Breakfast in the Tavern was wonderful. The area surrounding the Inn had many historic homes that you could easily walk to. I look forward to staying here again should our travels bring us back to this area.
- Frank (10/5): - Great little find in Princess Anne Maryland. Excellent breakfast and really enjoyed interacting with Barbie who provided great service.
- Drew (10/5): - Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Had a wonderful meal at the tavern.
- Joyce (10/5): Our stay - Loved the hotel. The only thing was we stayed there on a Sunday & Monday and Monday it was all closed down. Thank goodness the little cafe was open across the street. Other then that it was wonderful.
- Laila (2/5): - No staff for check in.. arrived at 9:45 PM a to lights on only outside.. doors locked! Paid in advance… nobody to answer the phone.. most upset after a 6 hour drive. Also we expected the tavern to be open. Lucky for us the high school age dishwater was locking up and he kindly took us in. An envelope with receipt was in the desk in pitch dark lobby but no key for assigned room. He was kind enough to call his boss who explained that key to building and room were attached to building. AN EMAIL EXPLAINING THIS PRIOR TO ARRIVAL could have saved us this stress and hassle. So tavern closes at 8:30 and check in staff hours are minimal!
- James (4/5): - We arrived at 4 pm and the doors were locked and the building was vacant. We were not previously notified that there would not be anyone there. We walked around the whole building, trying doors, until we read the notice on the front door saying that we should call. We called and learned that we had to open a lockbox to get the keys. We spent the entire night in a huge, old building, (1700’s) by ourselves. We had to call again to ask how to turn on the lights in the lobby. The next morning there were two people working in the dining room and we were given a mediocre breakfast.
- Barbara (10/5): - The Inn was built in 1744, so I loved the historical mystique surrounding the building. If only the walls could talk, what would they tell and who would it be about?
- Jennifer (6/5): - There was a distinct mustiness in our room. It was also a little damp. The carpet was old. It would have been so much nicer and in keeping with its age to have bare floors.
- Patrick (10/5): - The restaurant in the property is very good.
- Sharon (10/5): Great night! - We had a great night at this bed-n-breakfast. It was clean, comfortable, quiet and safe. There was plenty of parking and the dinner and breakfast were excellent. Everyone working there was really friendly and went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable.
- Warren (10/5): Stay here - Great food and drinks. Great breakfast! Barbie was super pleasant.
- Michael (10/5): A Real Treat! - The Washington Inn and Tavern exceeded all expectations. I chose it primarily for the incredibly low nightly rate. I also liked the location as central to many of the eastern shore sites I wanted to visit. Only once I arrived did I come to learn and appreciate the history and beauty of this old inn. The staff are all very friendly and take personal interest in how you are doing, especially the incredibly kind woman who serves breakfast in the tavern. The food is excellent, and when open in the evening, the tavern is a great spot to grab a drink and relax. I arrived as a guest and left as a fan. I can't wait to go back!
- Bettylou (10/5): - Great surprise in sleepy little town. Very nice, newly rennovated, old time inn. Convenient to US13. Great cooked breakfast and server Barb was cheery and quick.
Disapointed we missed dinner.
look forward to staying again.
- Maria (10/5): Great little B&B - Great for a B&B - will definitely stay there when I visit my daughter.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Charming hotel with a great team running it. - Lovely staff and a really comfortable and interesting hotel. I had a good sized comfortable room and the food was great. Not sure what more you could want.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property had old world charm! The front desk person was extremely helpful and pleasant! Our bedroom and bathroom had everything we needed and were very clean and well appointed! We had a delicious dinner at the Tavern. We highly recommend the property to others !!
- Cynthia McKallip (8/5): - The Inn is very clean. Check in was easy and good parking. We were very disappointed in the town of Princess Anne. There were very few restaurants open or limited hours. Really very little to do in the area. I would definitely not stay in the area again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Historic beautiful Inn, with a excellent kitchen.
- Carol (10/5): Superb! - Never question should i chose this Inn because it is the only place my daughter and I will stay while visiting family. Our room is perfect with parking practically outside our door. The staff is superb extending hospitality that is rare today. Although, in this part of Maryland it is more common. The accommodations are clean, comfortable, well above average. The food is that of a 5 star restaurant with reasonable pricing. This inn is gorgeous, with a beautuful dining room and a fun filled tavern. We will definitely return!
- Robert (8/5): - Perfect place for a one night stop on our way home from vacation. Lovely colonial inn located in a small, sleepy town. Very peaceful night sleep in a quaint room that was very clean and well appointed. Staff was very courteous and welcoming. Had a very nice dinner in the tavern and enjoyed breakfast across the street at Squeakys the next morning.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Room was clean nice little bar downstairs staff were very friendly location was safe.
- Greg (10/5): - Very nice
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean and quiet. The room was recently updated. The included breakfast was across the street at a small cafe with a nice staff and good food. Great if you are looking for a quiet place to stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The building is old, but it's clean and nice. The staff was friendly and courteous and did their best to make all of their guests happy, but they could've used more staff on duty and a manager on the premises. In the morning when I tried to brew a cup of coffee with the Keurig in my room and watch TV a circuit breaker tripped so I had no electricity to anything that had to be plugged into a convenience outlet.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Quaint and nicely restored. For the most part the meals were good.
The big disappointment for me was that there was no staff presence much of the time. Most communication was by written notes.
The website states this is a smoke free facility but our hallway reeked of smoke, possibily coming from someone downstairs.
I enjoyed my stay but I think the owners rely on its charm to make up for lack of service. When staff were present it did not appear to be a smoothly run operation.
- Kai (10/5): Great Inn for an overnight - Historic Inn and Tavern with delicious dinner and very friendly service. The hotel is truly historic including slanted floors. We stayed one night on our way back home and would recommend this Inn for an overnight. The is no need to search for dinner options and breakfast is included. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The only downside (and no fault of the Inn) is the fact that the fire station is right next door. We experienced a 5:30AM "wake up call" due to the sirens.
- MADELINE (4/5): Not what one expects from a B&B - Room was fine (uncomfortable bed) except TV wasn’t working and there is NO STAFF to answer questions. There was an envelope at the front desk with my keys and a voucher for breakfast across the street. I love B&Bs to chat with owners and other guests. This was not that experience. The view outside my window was the dilapidated roof of part of the building; couldn’t tell if it was sunny or cloudy. Food at tavern was good.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great hotel. Clean, historic and quaint. Staff was absolutely wonderful. Food at the Tavern also excellent. Only reason I gave it a slightly lower rating was because the fire dept. is next door and the loud alarm went off twice in the middle of the night. To be fair, they do tell you on the website in advance!!
- Michael (4/5): - Dust everywhere. Not overly clean and not a good impression.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Cute place to stay. Good service and food in the restaurant
- Verified traveler (10/5): - All Good!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - My room was extremely small and tight. All the other rooms in the Inn are twice the size and I paid the same price. I contacted the Inn afterwards about other issues about my stay and got no response. I will not be staying there again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - We booked an accessible room - and when we arrived we were supposed to be on the second floor. Since there was no elevator, we were unable to stay. The hotel was unable to refund us - they said Expedia had to - Expedia put us on hold 30 minutes TWICE and hung up. We will dispute with our credit card.
- Roberta (4/5): On fire - Cute and quiet. They try hard but are far off the mark. The room was clean but shabby. It is literally in what could be a dining area. The bed , king size, had two pillows the size of postage stamps. The air conditioning was a portable unit ventilated through a window. The inn is right nest to the firehouse. A fire alarm rang out at 2;30 am. It was like the siren was in the room. The bathroom was slightly updated in the shower but otherwise very dated.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - This is an historic building. You definitely feel like you’re staying in another time period. It’s charming.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This is a very pleasant, reasonably priced hotel and the tavern's food is splendid. The only vegan option on the menu is the mushroom risotto but it is delicious. I highly recommend the chicken Marsala. Plus, you get a complimentary voucher worth $10 at Squeaky's Cafe across the street for breakfast. The rooms are smaller with some awkward layouts, but they are well appointed and clean. The tapwater isn't very palatable but they have bottle water in the rooms. I just bought a pack of Fiji water. The only thing I real disliked was the fact that the hotel sits beside a fire station that still uses an air siren. Other than that it's a great place to stay, especially if you're into history.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Washington Inn was a real disappointment for us. We expected old, but not run-down. The rooms are not as quaint as the one shown on the web site.
The town of Princess Anne was very depressed. No restaurants or charm to be had. If you're looking for small town charm, stay in Berlin or Snow Hill.
This hotel and town were a real disappointment.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Polite customer service clean room
- Sandra (6/5): Hot Historic Inn - Cute historic inn. The tavern food and wine were good. The free breakfast at squeaky’s was delicious. The room overall was good. Just the ac in our room was not working. We were sweating and up all hours of the night googling how to use the ac. We even opened the door at one point to the hallway to get a breeze but then got worried someone would walk by and see us in our underwear. The window was painted shut so we couldn’t open it for air. I wish we had a fan, we wanted a romantic getaway but could not even cuddle due to the heat. I wouldn’t stay there during the spring or fall unless you like the heat. Maybe the ac works in the summer?
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a lovely hotel situated right downtown on the main street. Very convenient to everything downtown and well appointed hotel. Staff was over and above friendly and attentive.
- Norman (2/5): Terrible service! - My wife and I were house searching in Salisbury (driving hours to get there) and I wanted to find a nice hotel with a restaurant and bar to relax after a day of house hunting. The reason I made the reservation at the Washington Inn and Tavern was for that reason, paying up for a large room. When we checked in, at 5 pm, we were told that the restaurant and bar were closed, but open the next day! We were directed to a pizza parlor close by. We had to drive to another town for dinner. We checked out a day early. When we left, the manager wasn't in, so we just left the key with the housekeeper. I contacted the hotel asking for a refund for the second day, and was told that since I used Expedia, they could not help me. Regardless of COVID, this was terrible service!!
- Scott (8/5): Charming but Alarming - This is a charming old Inn ion the Main Street in town. Our Saturday night stay included a lovely Sunday breakfast menu served in the dining room with a variety of choices. (On other days breakfast is at a nearby restaurant.)
We arrived after 9 pm just as the staff was leaving, but they kindly poured us some wine which we took to our room.
The room itself was a classic king and the bed literally filled almost the entire room. Fortunately it was a comfy bed and the bathroom was clean and in decent condition.
The volunteer fire station is next door to the Inn and while this is stated up front when booking and reiterated by staff upon your arrival, experiencing an actual alarm is very memorable. We got two of them at around 10:30 pm. Each consists of 8 ear rattling blasts. Wow!!!
It’s a small town and those were the only alarms we heard during our 12 hours on premises, and we were glad we were not asleep when they sounded.
So, overall it was a charming but alarming visit... new manager, nice staff, good food, clean, and the fire house is right next door... just in case!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Historic property with welcoming bar/ restaurant
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Under COVID restrictions, we weren't sure what to expect. This is our third annual visit to the property, and other than a limited menu and limited staff, it was exactly as it was before and once again, we had a pleasant visit.
- LYN (10/5): Beautiful place to stay - Very beautiful and quaint place to stay. Very friendly and welcoming staff. The room was amazing, the bed was comfy and huge. Free breakfast just made the stay that much nicer! Would stay here again!
- Geoff (8/5): - Nice old fashioned inn with good dining room and inclusive breakfast. Unfortunately, Princess Anne is pretty much of a dump, so plan accordingly.
- Judith (8/5): immaculate room; blah breakfast - Our room was immaculate and the bathroom literately sparkled! Very impressed. The breakfast was disappointing but everything else was wonderful.
- Kathleen (8/5): Anniversary Weekend - Liked the room and the breakfast was fantastic. Not much to do around the inn. It would be helpful if the owners provided some information about what is available to do in the area.
- Jeffrey (8/5): Overnight Stay - Everything about the Inn was wonderful except it being next to the fire station and the fire alarm waking us up in the middle of the night....I guess it added a little adventure to our trip! We would definitely stay here again it was by far the cleanest place I have ever stayed and we travel pretty frequently.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great place to stay. The room was great and the bathroom huge! Breakfast was wonderful as well. Great staff.
- Debbie (10/5): - Nice inn - my only suggestion would be to leave the A.C. on in the room after cleaning during the heat of summer. It was very hot when we checked in that evening.
The young woman, Star who made and served our breakfast was delightful, very attentive and a good cook! She deserves praise!
- Michael (10/5): memorable stay in an historic inn..... - We enjoyed a fabulous stay at the historic Washington Inn and Tavern. Both the room and the cuisine were first rate, and staff couldn't have been more welcoming. This will be our go-to place when we head south from NY and pass through this neck of the woods!
- Siddharth (10/5): Amazing experience!! - Best place to stay, nothing like it.
- Lois (8/5): - Very nice and quaint hotel. The bed was very comfortable and cozy. The only drawback was a very loud siren from the fire department right next door. Overall a pleasant stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a great place for a romantic weekend getaway. If you are looking for a hotel with all the modern amenities this may not be the place for you, but if you love charming properties this is an excellent place. The room was lovely but the real star of the show was the tavern. We loved our meals- both dinner and the next day's breakfast! We will be back again. The only drawback to this is the fact that this town is pretty much closed on Sundays.
- BAFriend (10/5): - This was our second visit to this property, and we will certainly return again and again. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the staff is friendly and attentive, and the food and the tavern is to die for! Thanks for another great experience!
- Paul (8/5): - Room was very clean and dining areas and bar were very nice. Staff (Lisa and Nicole, especially), were very accommodating and friendly. Lobby and dining areas were a little chilly, even with heaters and fireplaces. Bar area was warm, and that's where we ended up having our meals.
- Eleanor (10/5): - Loved the personal service, area and history of the Inn.
- Corinne (10/5): - We love that it’s an old inn/tavern with all of the character and quaintness we love but with updates that make it modern and clean.
- Uralrocks (10/5): - I stayed only one night and was truly impressed by the friendliness at the reception, and the room. Room is a not your standard hotel room and feels more home-like. It must have been recently renovated, with excellent solid wood furniture, bedding, foam mattress and pillows, Keurig machine with free cups and 4 bottles of water. Huge renovated bathroom with extra heater. High quality at a reasonable stay. Did I mention that George Washington stayed at this Inn?
- Debby (8/5): Charming Inn - Very quaint. 1729 inn. Dinner and breakfast in the Tavern, good food and atmosphere. Very comfortable bed and clean bathroom!! Super nice staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - What a charming inn. Delightfully historic. Comfortable and historic details while having up to date rooms and bath!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Had a great time, only stayed overnight but I'll definitely be back!
- Terry (10/5): - Very unique property! Cool area, lots of historic building nearby. Breakfast (included) was great as well!
- Gary (10/5): - Emergency eye surgery required me to stay in the Salisbury area for 24 hours post op. I chose the Washington Inn because I wanted a place with a restaurant and a place to chill, because I was not able to drive, and my vision situation limited my mobility. The staff, especially GM Blake, server Nicole, and chef Eric went out of their way to ensure that my needs were met and that I was comfortable. The Inn is very cool and charming, and the food was awesome. Highly recommend to anyone staying in this area.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The owner was present almost all the time during my stay. He couldn't have been more welcoming, especially fitting me in for dinner at the bar. Chef's Fish and Chips was perfectly cooked. Had one of the most pleasant conversations with an instructor at both UMES and SU. The room was just right for me. I will definitely stay again. The location was perfect for my alumni weekend at SU. The included breakfast is a nice treat......unlike other establishments their breakfast is "real." Thank you Staff at Washington Inn and Tavern. Randomly throwing these moments out to you viewers. I had an incredible experience...can you tell????.....
- Mike (10/5): Loved it - Nice place, lots of history with great food👍😄
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Overall everything very comfortable. Dinner was excellent!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Quiet, simple alternative to Eastern Shore chain motels. Good menu, very informative host Blake, and Nicole will take care of all your food and drink needs.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great place to stay! Friendly staff, very clean, delicious made to order breakfast included. Better value than the big chain hotels! Highly recommend.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautifully restored and oozing colonial charm (with staff to match) our bedroom and bathroom were full of modern comforts clothed in colonial style and were spotless. Breakfast was a daily delight. We stayed four nights and were sad to go.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The room was clean and location is great. The staff was friendly and courteous.
- Caitlin (10/5): - My husband and I loved our stay here. Quiet, quaint and charming place. Will definitely return when we are in the area again.
