Guest Reviews
- Krista (10/5): - Great quiet stay, in central location
- Irene (8/5): - Room was dated, but very clean and spacious. Great view of the harbour.
- Sanette (6/5): - It wasn't the cleanest property we've ever stayed at, but what was most disappointing is the hot water in the shower was warm, not hot.
- Alan (8/5): - Overall experience was good. We could be back again.
- Gordon (8/5): - odd check in. wasn't expecting much so the actual rrom was a pleasant surprise. Unique lay out
- Margrit (2/5): - My wife booked for two nights at the Sportman's Inn. When we were trying to check in to the room. They send us to a busy pub next door to check in. The very busy bartender told us that she can't check us in because the owner run out of printing paper and didn't come back yet. It would take at least two hours. Little did we know that we actually had to stay at the Mc Neil's Inn close to the Sportsman's Inn. We stayed for two nights with no house keeping as advertised. We will definitely not stay there again.
- Tania (6/5): - Parking was hard to access but mostly empty. Maybe because of the low occupancy or because it was difficult to access.
Coffee machine wasn’t working well. Went to the Sportsman inn where there was a sign on door to check in a pub next door. At pub, was given keys and sent to the McNeill inn next door to that. Very confusing and not overly welcoming.
- Maura (4/5): - Hotel has no staff on site. Very dirty carpets. Shabby
- Jolene (6/5): - A very basic room for one night. It provided a bed which was all I needed. I felt safe as a single traveler, however, walls were thin, and I could here snoring from the room above. Overall, it served my purpose, but would not stay there for any period of time.
- Michael (10/5): - Parķing was beside the building
Walking to ferry right there
- Macreena (10/5): - Room was nice and bigger than anticipated. It had a great view of the water too! Staff were incredibly helpful and friendly!
- Helen (8/5): - We stayed on the top floor in Room 9. Small "living room" with a sofa bed, table, chair, lamp, wall-mounted tv, microwave, small refrigerator with freezer, counter, coffee maker, cups, coffee, sugar, coffee whitener (no spoons/stir sticks). The window does not open. Blind on window. The carpet in this area was very stained. It should have been vinyl/tile. Large closet with bedding for sofa bed, fan/iron/ironing board. Extremely large, tiled bathroom. Sink, counter, toilet, deep tub/shower (no grab bar). Usual toiletries/hairdryer. There was a partial wall, then the large bedroom with two, comfortable beds, dresser, wall-mounted tv, alarm clock, arm chair, side table with a lamp and WiFi booster. As this is at the back of the room, there was no window/airflow. Recently renovated. There is no reception area. Check-in/key pickup is at the Pub next door. There is no sign in the Pub, you have to flag down a server to get checked-in. No staff on-site and only saw a the housekeeper once during our stay. Had to ask her for more coffee/plastic glasses. There is no check-out, just a key drop-off box on the railing of the landing. The property sits kitty-corner to the water/harbour, so any view is a side-ways view, over the roof of the attached restaurant/parking lot and the adjacent pub. The area around the hotel is strewn with garbage/pizza boxes which was never picked up the entire 3 nights we were there. The hotel is still undergoing renovations.
- Angela (10/5): - Clean spacious room.
- Bob (8/5): - Port McNeil was a very nice little town situated right on the ocean . It has great views of the harbour and you can walk to anywhere you might need to go . I would recommend staying at the Sportsmans Inn at the waterfront .
- Molina (8/5): - Clean and tidy room close to the waterfront
- Martin (6/5): - Bathroom was renovated but carpets need replacing urgently
- Joanne (6/5): - Staff was great.
- SSarafinchan (8/5): Not bad - We stayed here for one night as we were passing thru the area. The rooms aren't fancy but are comfortable and had everything we needed.
- Joyce (8/5): - coffee machine didn’t work
- Michael (6/5): The Good, the Bad, the Ugly. One night was enougn. - We delayed booking until far too late and there were virtually no rooms available in Port Hardy so we looked at Port McNeil & found this hotel.
The pictures looked nice, the rate was very good, the reviews were mixed...
The Good:
(1) Port McNeil is actually much more charming a village than Port Hardy. So for a night this was a great choice.
We enjoyed the marina, the excellent Devil's Bath brew pub, and Gus's Grill (outstanding fresh seafood!) the restaurant associated with the hotel.
(2) The after labour day rate was good.
(3) The staff were friendly and nice.
(4) Very comfortable bed.
The BAD
(1) Bait-and-switch. When we arrived, following directions, went to Gus's for check in. Were informed that the Sportsman's Inn we booked was closed for "refreshing" and instead we'd be staying at a different hotel on the other side of Gus's, which was NOTHING like the hotel we'd booked on line.
The UGLY
(1) The room we were given, #2, was on the ground floor, in a parking lot (not harbour view as booked).
(2) The bathroom caulking was BLACK.
(3) The side table, cheap pressboard, was pitted and marked (for $10 at a thrift store you could do better)
(4) the microwave & coffee maker the cheapest I've ever seen.
(5) There was no cultery, plates, nothing The table provided was wobbly.
All in all, check before booking if you are REALLY getting the Sportsman's Inn or being shunted off to a dive with NO warning until arrival.
- Sharon (8/5): - Clean and comfortable
- Al (8/5): - The room was ok but the carpets were very dirty! The bedroom had a claustophbic feel to it without a window to let in some natural light and ventilation.
Also some plastic teaspoons and a sink in the "kitchen" area would be nice.
- christophe (8/5): Très bon emplacement ... - Très belle chambre , hôtel tres bien placé , restaurant Gus, à côté de l'hôtel, au top ...
- Tom (10/5): - I doubt we will return. The walls are paper thin for one and the bed was awful. Quite run down the only good thing was the check in
- Paul (10/5): - It was quiet , clean & comfortable
- Kjell (4/5): - Room wasn't ready when we got there and would have liked to go in and freshen up before going to meet up with others. Check in is at a bar which was annoying. Will be staying elsewhere next time in Port McNeil
- Pauline (4/5): - They need a new bed in room #6, it drops off drastically on one side.
No drapes on windows to block light. Very bright streetlights right outside window. Couldn’t sleep!
Furniture is dilapidated and stained.
Bath shower curtain dirty and stinked
Never again!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Unable to stay here as claustrophobic - We didn’t stay as the room had no windows in the sleeping area only in the kitchenette area which was separated by a wall & short corridor by the wardrobe
We like fresh air when sleeping & it felt very claustrophobic for us. bed looked comfy & good amenities in kitchen area. Close to the water
The reception staff were helpful in recommending elsewhere & we ate in the restaurant which was good.
- Rhonda (6/5): - Internet was down for both my nights. No windows. No air conditioning. Room was stuffy and had to leave the door open to get any air in the room.
- Marie-Pierre (2/5): Most horrible stay, not as advertised ! - I have nothing good to say about this place. The room wasn't at the Sportsman Inn as per the name, but at the nearby McNeil's Inn on the other side of the pub where you do your check-in with servers who's duty is to simply give you a key. The room was extremely small, no chairs, no suitcase tray, all furniture was heavily damaged, the toilet wasn't screwed properly and had a small leak, the shower curtain smelled and was disgustingly stained. The windows go all the way to the floor so curtains must be kept closed as otherwise you are lying on your bed for the whoke parking lot to see. The staff told us they were completely full and could not help out. This left us with a sour taste about Port McNeil. We were on the road by 7:30am. The little café next door was vey nice.
- Jennifer (4/5): - Did not have a room in the Inn that was booked. Mold in shower. Huge spider in bathroom. No phone. Noise from upstairs.
- Tod (6/5): - Your standard motel. Clean, older furnishings. A good bit of noise transfer. Could hear people out front of the hotel and we were woken in the night by people walking in the room above us. Bed was clean and comfortable.
- Rosemary (10/5): Great place to stay. - We enjoyed our stay very much. Our rooms were spacious, with comfy beds, soft pillows and suited our needs really well. They were very clean and neatly presented. It’s in a great location, close to the water front and has a wonderful coffee shop/bakery next door and brew pub which provided excellent music and atmosphere just across the road.
- Jeremy (6/5): - Quiet
- Barbara (6/5): - We liked Gus’s pub. Did not feel totally private because of condition of the window blinds. Bathroom dated and did not feel safe in the shower. Slippery tub and no grab bar. Bed was comfortable and blinds were dirty. Could have used paper towels in kitchenette to wipe up coffee spills.
- COSTIN (10/5): - Perfect stay.
- Jamai (4/5): - Bed incredibly lumpy and the sound between units very noticeable. Hot water? Nope.
- Marilyn (8/5): - Great location. Nice to have the Harbour Views and coffee shops and restaurants right nearby. Room was a bit small but very well taken care of.
- Ian (6/5): - This could be a nice hotel, but is not cleaned well. In particular, the carpets were heavily stained and did not appear to have been vacuumed as there were chip crumbs evident. For almost $200 a night, I expect more.
- Ronald (2/5): - This was a disgusting place to stay. We cut our visit short a day because the room was a disaster. When we arrived we discovered that one of the two beds had simply been remade from the previous occupant with sheets unchanged - evidenced by dozens of hairs between the sheets, and a filthy pillow case.
The bathroom was a dumpster. Mold ringed the tub surround, and when we used the sink it filled quickly with large chunks of mold bubbling up into the sink. Disgusting!
We don’t mind budget hotels, but at $220 per night this was a rip off. Spider webs filled the doorway, the furniture was broken - the one chair sported a broken leg leaving anyone who used it to tip onto the floor, and the beds were a remnants from the last century- no support. The blinds were also broken and would not close exposing the room to anyone caring to look in.
I was offered a $100 discount for my troubles only to have the offer rescinded when I said I wouldn’t stay a second night. Frankly, the dumpster in the parking lot was a better - or at least as good an - option.
Save yourself the grief sleep in your car this place is a dump.
- Devon (8/5): - This hotel is one of three buildings all owned by the same group/company. It is in the downtown area and Port McNeill, being a small community, makes everything very close at hand.
If you want to go on the ferry as a foot passenger, it is also within walking distance so a great location.
It was neat, clean and quite nice.
- Edward (8/5): - We were placed in the additional building, in a room overlooking the harbour. The rooms are next door to Gus' Bar, a friendly sports bar with good food and pool table and TVs. Great views of the boats in the harbour. Easy parking. Room was comfortable and clean but basic and also smelt of smoke slightly. We would stay here again.
- Paul (2/5): - this stay was cancelled within the time frame why did it still pop up as if i stayed?
- Verified traveler (6/5): Great Location low expectations - The bed and pillows were just ok, the place smelled like mildew. Shower was only luke warm not hot and I didnt need to turn on the cold at all. No instructions on where to check in asked a cleaner and they told me to go to the pub. Location was great, price was decent its what I expected for this rating.
- Erika (6/5): - Great location but the fact that there was no ventilation in the room was bad. No windows in the sleeping area so it felt like a dark cave and the window by the entrance couldn't be opened. You had to open the door to get fresh air.
- Chantal (8/5): - hard to reach staff
- Janet (2/5): - There was no one to call to complain about the noise from the next door guests. We don’t get much sleep for two nights. The coffee maker was no restocked. There were stains on the carpet and it smelled
- Elizabeth (4/5): - This place had no air conditioning and the window doesn’t open , so we wanted to open the door but it’s so bright with the porch light. We felt quite suffocated in the heat. There is no one to check in at the right address but have to go inside the restaurant next door to check in. Wish that instruction was more clear
- patricia (6/5): - The shower didn’t drain. Obviously plugged up.
- Stephanie (8/5): - Good for a couple of nights. Comfortable, quiet, right across from the Visitor’s Information, and very short walking distance to Ferry to get to Alert Bay.
Washroom needs more attention in terms of maintenance and cleanliness (mainly shower/tub).
Visit Gus’ Pub (18+ only as it is a bar) excellent service and food!
- Steven (2/5): - This hotel was a major disappointment from the moment we arrived. Check-in was chaotic—there was no staff at the front desk, and we had to walk to a bar two buildings away just to find someone to register us. Upon finally receiving our room key, we discovered the room had not been cleaned. We were told it would be another two hours if we wanted it cleaned before check-in. The staff throughout this process was unhelpful and impolite.
The property appears to be severely understaffed, with the same few employees managing multiple motels and bars. The room itself was in poor condition: an outdated 32-inch TV from 2006 with no internet connectivity or streaming options; no air conditioning, ceiling fan, or portable fan; and only a small, barely-opening front window without a screen. The lack of ventilation left the room muggy, musty, and with a strong moldy odor. Lighting was inadequate, giving the space a dark and dingy feel.
For a rate of over $200 per night, the overall condition of the property was unacceptable. The building’s exterior was visibly deteriorating, with siding and roofing coming loose. The staircases were rotting and unsafe. Inside, noise insulation was nonexistent—footsteps from the room above were loud and disruptive, even when occupants were simply walking. To make matters worse, it was 30°C inside when we arrived, with no way to cool the room.
In summary, this stay was overpriced, uncomfortable, and poorly managed. I left deeply dissatisfied and regretful
- Robert (8/5): - Enjoyed our stay.
- Ben (2/5): - I should get a refund, called hotel earlier today, told them I would not arrive before 11:30 pm. They said a key would be left under doormat of room arrived at hotel and there was no key. Was not able to access room. A reply on this issue would be appreciated.
- WILLIAM (10/5): - Well situated good restaurant below
Only down side carpet was quite dirty in sitting area
- Carole (8/5): Good Choice - Comfortable and clean. Conveniently located. Enjoyed a drink at the pub and dinner at Gus’s.
- Carmelita (2/5): - We arrived to the hotel from the ferry from Prince Rupert and the hotel reception ( and bar) was closed. We ended up sleeping a couple of hours the before continuing our journey. The hotel should be used to people arriving from the ferry and make sure there is a way of entering the room without getting locked out, especially since there is no cell reception on that route.
- Bernard (6/5): - Carpet had stains all over it. Room was very hot with no windows to open or air conditioning to cool it down. One good thing was restaurants were all in walking distance and so was a good coffee shop.
- Samir (6/5): - The washroom was disappointingly unclean, with mold on the bathtub. Paying $300 for a night in a room like this feels like a complete rip-off. I would not recommend this place.
- Margaret (6/5): - The room was spacious. Bed was comfortable. Area was quiet. The coffee pot didn't work, if it would have, they only had de-caf in the room.
- Lani (2/5): - Do not stay here. The Sportsman Inn is in fact 2 separate buildings, you don't check in at the hotel, you check in at Gus' Bar. We checked in with the bartender got our key to our room which was in a different building than the Sportsman inn. The caulking around the tub was covered in black mold so the room would not be suitable. We returned to the bar and told the bartender of the situation and that we wanted a different room. They didn't have one, we advised her that this was not acceptable and wanted to speak with the manager. This was an expedia booking so there was little they could do.She phoned the manager and left a msg, and said to come back and that the manager was on her way to deal with the situation. We were pressed for time to find alternate accommodation in Port McNeil which is very limited since the room we were offered was completely unsuitable due to the black mold. While we waited we secured accommodation at the Humpback Inn, while waiting the bartender would not give us the number to speak to the manager ourselves and we had to relay messages. In the meantime we were also in touch with expedia using the online chat to obtain an emergency refund but were advised they had to contact the hotel .we told them it was a bar and there was no active hotel number. The manager Dana finally arrived and authorized the refund with expedia. We were fortunate that we arrived early enough to secure alternate accommodation and obtain a refund.
- Aurelia (4/5): - The rooms are a lot more outdated than the pictures, isolation is poor and we could hear the guests upstairs walk during the night.
Bathroom was clean but only the hot water was working in the shower and the bathroom seals were gone/moldy.
- Pholene (8/5): - Poor insulation..people above could be heard talking loudly with heavy foorsteps.
- Virginia (8/5): - We had a very nice stay at the Sportsman Inn on the Harbor. It was clean, convenient, and quiet. It doesn't look like much on the outside, but it is very nice inside! There are many options for restaurants and grocery stores nearby within walking distance, and it is right on the harbor front so we had a good view of boats coming and going. I am glad we chose this motel for our stay in Port McNeill.
- Linda (8/5): - The view was lovely, walkable to restaurants. Great hikes in the area.
The unit was good for a night - the plumbing struggles when there is a lot of activity from multiple units.
The bathroom shower stall needs to be replaced.
- Wendy (8/5): - Room was clean. Bed was comfortable. Very convenient location within walking distance of several restaurants, shops and the harbour front. Especially enjoyed the Mugs Cafe next door.
- Peter (8/5): - Check in is at another location, expensive for the age and quality of room
- Ladan (6/5): - Excellent location. No
- Verified traveler (4/5): - No front desk person, had to check in down the road at a pub. Room was extremely hot when we got there, no Air Conditioning.
No spot to drop key at the end of the stay. Zero customer service. Would never stay again.
- Kristen (4/5): - There is no lobby or front desk. You have to check in at a bar that kids can not go in. We stayed for 4 nights and they didn't clean our rooms even after we asked 3 times, they said they would and then never came 3 days in a row. Bathtub was gross, very moldy in the corners. We had two rooms the other one in a different buildings was much nicer. Great location and nice view of the Harbour. The sunsets were wonderful!
- Muhammad (2/5): - Horrible and dirty
- Lisalyn (4/5): - Carpet had stains and felt crispy to my feet. It seemed dirty. I made a coffee and it tasted funky, when I went to make another one, I discovered a used coffee pad still in the filter. There was some ones beer in the fridge. The tv desk and bedside table were in terrible condition. The toilet was loose, and the tub drain was clogged. I chose this hotel due to the good price. The lady at check in was helpful and the room view was beautiful out to the ocean. It was next to Mugsy coffee shop which was amazing.
- Angela (10/5): Overnight - Other then you need to be aware of where the hotel is located, the hotel is amazing, clean, friendly staff, art gallery close to amenities and continental breakfast included.
- Valerie (8/5): - Very quiet the room is very clean and updated
- Matt (8/5): - Location
- Lois (10/5): - Comfortable clean and quiet!
- Allan (8/5): - Check in was confusing. The name of the place was different and we had to check in at the bar and grill. But once we got checked in all was great.
- Rebecca (8/5): Family stay- base for whale watching - Small town stay to go whale watching. Good size room and comfortable bed. Easy check in and check out. Good location in the town, beside the shops and restaurants. Decor is a little tired but good value for money given the limited options in the area.
- Lindsey (2/5): - I was not able to check in as I just missed the pub's closing. There is no phone number or any way to get in contact with the property. The emails from the Inn I received just said to go to the pub if checking in late, but it wasn't even open. I would not recommend this property. Travel plans change, and there is no reception on much of the road to Port McNeil. There are better options available. No refund was issued (after multiple requests) even though I had no room.
- Robert (8/5): - Hard to find property from instructions on Expedia; (One Way Road). Check-in was at neighbouring Bar.
Accommodations were at McNeill's Inn (across parking lot from Bar). That room was comfortable, clean and ground floor convenient for my vision-impaired wife to feel safe.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Clean, but uncomfortably hot. - The room had one window that didn’t open, no fans, no AC. The window blinds didn’t close, so we had no privacy and no one came to fix it after I called. We were there two nights so there was plenty of time to fix it. It was very clean and roomy, so those were good things. I would not encourage a stay here in the summer.
- brady (2/5): - no hot water small tv bad parking
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very small town, rooms were actually in 3 different buildings next to each other. Good proximity to Coffee Shop/Bakery (in our parking lot!) and across the parking lot to either of 2 restaurants or Brewery in the other direction. Right on waterfront so lots of places to stroll and take in the view. Room was clean, TV took a while to figure out but doable.
- Stephanie (6/5): - Very convenient location for boaters. Overall room and bathroom were clean and adequate though a bit worn. Pretty extensive mildew around the tub. Shower temp was only lukewarm.
- Terri (8/5): - Nice waterfront location, walkable to restaurants and the waterfront trail.
- Jan (8/5): - Great view of the harbour and nice size room.
- Clair (10/5): - Very confusing check in. Had to go to multiple properties. Not well identified.
- daniel (8/5): - Smell of baked goods in the mornings with the coffee shop next door.
- Andrea (10/5): - Nice people work here. Convenient location.
- Elisabeth (2/5): - Black mold around tub. Tepid shower. Dank smell.
- Sanae (4/5): - I had to stay here unexpectedly after arriving in Port McNeill on the last ferry from Alert Bay. There is no front desk at this hotel, and I was only able to check in by asking at the nearby pub. However, the pub closes at 10 PM, while the last ferry arrives at 10:30 PM — so I was lucky to have made it in time. Otherwise, I might not have been able to check in at all.
The room itself was clean, but unfortunately, I could hear every footstep and conversation from the room above. It made for a very uncomfortable and restless stay.
- daniel (8/5): - The fresh smell of baking at the Cafe next door
- Josef (8/5): - clean room with beautiful view of ocean
- Andrea (8/5): - Thin walls
- Linda (6/5): - Door was in poor condition and difficult to lock and unlock.
2 sites some distance apart and poor signage as to where to go to get key. Fortunately a cleaner on site.
Not enough creamer supplied.
Curtain but no blockout blinds.
No explanation for working coffee machine.
- David (6/5): - Fine
- Jenn (10/5): - :)
- Tabitha (10/5): - I love the town and the cafe next door was great
- Cheryl (10/5): - It was nice and quiet in the evening but as soon as 8am hit it was quite loud. Plus being the only people at the place we were put next to a building where people and trucks were going too. TV was quiet tiny but overall it was a decent one night stay
- Camila (6/5): - Staff was really nice, friendly and accommodating; however, it was weird to check in at the pub. The rooms were way bigger than expected. One of the rooms was too hot and we had to open the door. Overall it was a good experience and it’s right in front of the water so the view is very nice.
- John (6/5): - We booked at the Sportsmans, when we got there a sign on the door said to go next door to Gus's Pub. They were very nice and knew all about our reservation. Which turned out to be in a different building 'The McNeil Inn'. I realize that it's a small town and they are trying to stay afloat but wasn't expecting to hear karaoke till 12:30 after a day of traveling.
