- Stephanie (7/5): Great location in Lerwick. - The location was excellent. We wanted to stay close to the Bressay ferry. The view was right across the water which was lovely. The bed was comfortable, the tea and coffee was good. There was plenty of space in the room. The landlord was very accommodating and helpful, allowing us a late checkout in order to be able to do the Bressay Parkrun. The breakfast was lovely. The hotel was a little rundown. The windows were not double glazed and had condensation in the morning. We didn't mind but there were lots of stairs.

- Cameron (9/5): Given its a 2* hotel - it is exceptional in all things that matter to relax and enjoy. - Lovely historic hotel which gives it amazing charm. It's not your standard run of the mill bland Travelodge or Premier Inn. Add the fantastic location, extensive car park, wonderful staff who clearly care and want you to have the best stay possible, substantial breakfast, value for money and finally incredibly comfortable beds/linen for a relaxing sleep. Nothing - was sad when I had to leave.

- ivort820 (2/5): AVOID - An absolute dump of a hotel. From the moment you walk in to see the dirty carpets and damp smelling staircase, to the bedrooms which are in a state. The kettle was yellow(used to be white) wallpaper peeling off of the walls. Filthy windows. A triple room the size of a single in most hotels, with about 1 foot of space between beds. Ceiling light with dead insects inside. Dirty carpets in the room⌠which were holes tooâŚNo evening meals. Staff helpful but in need of some sort of uniform instead of whatever they found at the bottom of the basket that day.

- E3902NRdavide (10/5): Certainly a grand welcome - The location in the centre of town right behind the main car park can't be bettered. All of the staff of the hotel are extraordinarily helpful and very friendly, offering to carry our bags up to the top floor, producing huge breakfasts, and arranging Up Helly Aa tickets for us. The room was spotlessly clean, as were the public areas. Clearly some people don't understand the monumental task of maintaining such a building on a remote island in the North Sea, but for us, the welcome more than made up for any dated wallpaper.

- Leigh (1/5): Deeply disappointing experience. - Location The lobby and reception are extremely dated, which might have been forgivable had the room not been in such appalling condition. The level of cleanliness was unacceptable. The windows, walls, and light fixtures were coated in dust and grime. The waste bin hadn't been emptied, and contained beer cans, toilet paper, and used tea bags, among other items. The wallpaper was well past its expiration date - peeling, stained, and visibly neglected. The windowsill was visibly deteriorating to the point that fragments of the wood were littering the floor. The overall state of the room made it impossible to consider staying, and forced alternative accommodation to be booked. The property is in urgent need of an overhaul and a serious commitment to basic hygiene standards.

And Janet and the other staff were so good not just sorting and bringing breakfast but with tips and advice on Shetland, thanks to you All. Not much at all, the Grand Hotel is an old and listed building so the owners cant put in a lift. But the grandeur and comfort more than make up for this. Plus the friendliness of Lisa, Barney and all their staff was fabulous, thanks to you all.

- leighmckennan (2/5): DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY GOING HERE IT IS DISGUSTING!! - WOW is all I can say and not in a good way. AVOID THIS PLACE!! Lasted 5 mins in my room before leaving and finding another hotel. Place smells foosty and damp as soon as you walk in the front door. Felt like I had walked in to the 1700âs with the decor. Place was silent which is a red flag straight away. Wallpaper peeling off the walls in the room right next to the bed and all around the room. Carpet was extremely worn and stained. The bin hadnât been emptied when I got in to the room and something had splashed on the wall! Was going to go for a shower but think I wouldâve came out dirtier. When I told the guy I was leaving he said theyâve never had anything like this before, I very much doubt that. The pictures donât do it justice it was 10 times worse being there in person. The wood all around the window in the room was rotted and dirty and there were dead flies inside the light shade in the room and bathroom. If I couldnât have found another hotel I wouldâve slept in the car for 2 nights. Honestly do not waste your money on this place itâs an absolute disgrace.
- sharonrG6482XA (2/5): Please please do not spend your hard earned money - itâs truly disgraceful! - Right in the centre of the Main Street in Lerwick, location is its one and only redeeming quality. Iâm so upset to write this, but itâs an absolute rat pit. Itâs INCREDIBLY expensive!, please, please do not spend your money here. It needs completely redecorating, cleaning and overhauling. I donât know how anyone can give this a good review itâs really not fair to other paying customers. The stairs, corridors and rooms are Iâm sorry - DISGUSTING! I think it was last decorated circa 1990 (35 years ago) itâs truly awful and the smell throughout the hotel is damp, musty and old. The rooms have had the bare minimum done to them over the years (my room had new windows and therefore the windowsills had been painted, the ceiling had been painted but the 80âs/90âs wallpaper is still in situ (and is FILTHY and peeling) the architraves and skirting boards hadnât been touched, the carpet is gross, the toilet seat was broken, the hot tap was broken. I couldnât bring myself to unpack my belongings into the ancient dirty furniture. The cleaner definitely does a good job as the bathroom was clean and the sheets and towels were too but it doesnât redeem how truly gross, oppressive and ancient the rooms are. The kettle, hairdryer and trouser press are yellowed due to age (30 years plus at a guess). My TV didnât work. Iâve seen some saying the breakfast is great- breakfast is just âokâ, there is a decent cold variety but itâs not presented well and as for the cooked breakfast, I think they must have a different chef now to previous reviews the bacon is only cooked on one side, the beans are cheap and there is a funny sweet taste to it. I prepaid for 3 nights but only managed one, losing ÂŁ618. It is without doubt the worst hotel Iâve ever stayed in and I really donât know how itâs managed 2 stars from the Scottish Tourist Board. Itâs as though the owners have no pride in this hotel and really donât care, theyâre exploiting the fact that accommodation is incredibly hard to come by in the Shetland Islands. Taking incredible amounts of money and not even opening a tin of paint. Honestly on entering the ground floor your heart will sink. There is no lift and a lot of stairs. The reception desk is completely unmanned and there is no one to help you with your bags. The bar is full of local regulars, noisy and smelly. The dining room was once âgrandâ and COULD be absolutely stunning. I saw no evidence whatsoever of ongoing refurbishment. Theyâre doing the bare minimum. My room had new windows which Iâm sure is because they had no choice - but why not continue the whole room? Itâs obvious they have either run out of money or really donât care. The worst travel experience Iâve ever had which is a shame because the actual Shetlands are stunning.

- 939virginiau (2/5): Stay away - This is possibly the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. Going through the main entrance, you are in a dark and dingy hall with no decoration, light fittings missing bulbs and decor that must be a good 40 years old. Reception is on the first floor; not once was it manned while we were there. There was a sign telling us to go to the bar, which stank of stale beer. The woodwork on the communal staircase was sticky, our room had peeling wallpaper, a shower room with a shower that hardly worked and loo paper holdres that broke while we were there. The view was out over the car park. I have never been in such a shoddy and unpleasant place. The one and only plus is the location, which is right in the middle of Lerwick, but I would avoid this place like the plague.

The room was a bit dated but comfortable. The bathroom was spacious and a the bath towel was excellent and had almost a luxurious feel. Free parking was always available just a 2 minute walk up the hill from the accommodation. The bed was comfy. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful! The hotel is in need of re-design, and I saw that they were advertising for interior decorators. The wallpaper was literally peeling off the walls and the carpet almost completely worn through in many areas, but the room and bathroom were clean. The internet was poor - connection was inconsistent and worked only half the time. I think the manager was really keen and really trying to make a change, so might be worth trying again in the future.

- JY_BC2020 (8/5): Heritage Lerwick hotel - This hotel is conveniently located on Commercial Street, the main thoroughfare of the old town. It's a short walk to the harbourfront and the Lerwick-Bressay ferry terminal, as well as the numerous nearby restaurants, shops, and key attractions (Fort Charlotte, Lerwick Museum and Art Gallery, The Knab). The hotel is an impressive 1800s era heritage building with an interior decor that has the feel of the early 1900s era. The building is not equipped with a lift, requiring walking up minimum four flights of stairs to reach the rooms (it requires two flights from the street level to get to the hotel check-in area, bar and breakfast room level), which was not a problem for me personally, but others with mobility issues might want to consider. My room was reasonably comfortable, although it lacked air conditioning, which meant reliance on open windows on a few warm summer nights. As my room faced a busy lane and was right above the hotel's bar entrance, keeping the window open meant, at times, somewhat elevated levels of noise impacting the room. My favourite part of this hotel experience was the daily full breakfast (choice of eggs style, protein, carbs, and garnishment), hosted by Janet and Micky, who are friendly, hospitable, and attentive. I was also impressed by the dedication and diligence of the hardworking hotel manager, Harvey, who took the time to engage with guests, including myself. Overall, I had a very satisfactory experience at this hotel, which met my expectations, being mindful of the state of hotel availability in Lerwick. If I should return to Lerwick, I would definitely consider staying here again.
- P8460ZCmaureenm (10/5): - I have to give this place 5 stars for the location and the incredible service. Harvey went out of his way to accommodate All my requests, and there were many! To mention a couple, he allowed me to use his phone when mine did not connect, and he offered to drive me all the way to the airport if my ride did not arrive in time. Who does that?? The morning breakfasts were nice and in a beautiful room with linen tablecloths. A shout out to Janet, I think that's her name, for her hard work. My room had a view of the sea and everything worked. There is no lift, but Harvey carried my bags up and down without delay. The place could benefit from refurbishing, but it offered everything a tourist really needs. I would stay here again if I ever came back!
- Norda (4/5): We loved the scenery, food, and people of Shetland. - Breakfast was great. Mick the cook and Janet our waitress were excellent at making us feel welcome and looking after us. Fortunately, we were moved to a better room on night 2, with a lovely view of the harbour. We appreciated Harvey doing this. The hotel was definitely in need of repainting and the shower had very little pressure. There was no lounge to sit in had the weather been poor. The flies were also problematic, especially at breakfast. If it is to do with recycling waste for heating then the council maybe need to rethink this for themselves and tourists. Our friends in another hotel had the same problem. They said their hotel was a bit tired too. We paid just under ÂŁ2,000 and expected a luxury hotel for that price.

- Alan (10/5): Great and will definitely be back - Three outstanding things. 1. The location is perfect right in the heart of Lerwick 2. The staff were very accommodating and friendly 3. The breakfast was amazing. The Grand Hotel has recently been taken over and is in need of a little modernisation, and the owner is already working on this. It was charming in a oldy worldy way and the staff and location more than make up for any modernistion. They most important thing; the rooms are lovely and this is where you would want the hotel to start their updates.
- Angie (10/5): Perfect location with friendly staff, hearty breakfast, soft towels and a comfy bed. - All the staff were very friendly and Mick? The chef was really helpful in directing us to the best beaches and cafes around the islands. Mickâs full breakfasts are hearty and the choice at breakfast is excellent. To have an evening meal at the hotel would have been a bonus, but fully understand why the owners reasons for not being able to cater an evening meal.
- Rory (8/5): A classic comfortable hotel in the heart of Lerwick - A very warm welcome. Great room with a view. Bar was good. Nice breakfast. A lovely old fashioned hotel in the heart of Lerwick. A little bit of nooise from the street around 11pm but I am very sensitive to noise!
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional - A wonderful late 19th century hotel set in the heart of Lerwick. There was no lift but I understand that as a listed building one canât be installed. The only issue here was moving luggage up and down the stairs. The staff were very helpful and placed my luggage in my room and even took it to the ferry terminal on my day of departure. As it turned out the lack of a lift wasnât an issue for me.

- Peter (8/5): Old style hotel centrally located with friendly staff - Great room allocated with view over water to Bressay. The hotel is centrally located with accessible rear carpark. Itâs certainly old world but fits with ambience of Lerwick The shower head fittings need some work / replacement (plastic?) and some better room ventilation would be ideal. Staff well intentioned and eager to please and very very busy during our stay (summer solstice). We were told staff shortages / absences are common in Shetland but hotel management needs to make sure usual services such as room clean etc continue to get done in a timely way.
