Guest Reviews
- Borja (10/5): Excellent and beautiful Japanese style stay - This hotel was the most beautiful of the ones I’ve stayed in Japan and one of the most unique I’ve stayed in my life. It’s true Japanese culture but modern at the same time. You’re in for a treat. 10min walk from Kyoto station. The bathroom is amazing with a proper ofuro for relaxation. Also staff are super accommodating and helpful. Stairs are steep but not a problem, just keep it in mind. We could not find where to hang wet clothes but there is a dryer.

- Anna (10/5): Polecam serdecznie. Warte swojej ceny. - W porównaniu z hotelami to wielki komfort.
- Philip Gounev (8/5): - It's a very spacious place and clean. For a family it had enough rooms and 2 toilets, and a nice bathroom. The houses around were quite old, so if you ignore the tracks and highways it's actually quite nice. It's very close to some nice big old temples (we went to a morning service at one on them). The house is right next to the train tracks, so it's really noisy, except between 1 am and 5 am. It's not very close to the train station if you've had a long day walking, so we ended up taking taxy often.

- Michele Stephanie (8/5): - The house was very comfortable and had a lovely traditional vibe. Location was very convenient. Having to collect the key at a different location, although the reception very promptly got a car to bring us the house.
- Amy (6/5): Good experience. Okay for a short stay. - The traditional style of the townhouse is a nice experience. The bathroom is generously sized and we had plenty of towels. The level of cleanliness. The sink in the kitchen blocked easily (it needs a good clean) and we noticed that the dishes hadn’t been cleaned properly (there was food still on plates) and food splatter in the kitchen. Also-the bedding had stains. While the kitchen is large there was very limited cutlery (no table knives or chopping boards) and small garbage bins (1 service during a 5 day stay) which isn’t ideal for groups. After 5 nights on a thin futton on the floor, we were all looking forward to a more comfortable bed.
- Ian (10/5): -
- Paula Cristina (10/5): Esperamos voltar!! - Maravilhoso! Adorámos! Tudo!!!!! Nada a assinalar!
- Keiji (1/5):
- Conal (9/5): Authentic Kyoto Machiya - Really authentic experience staying in neighborhood Machiya - we loved it! Great room in the place, clear instructions & very helpful staff at check in. Close to good restaurants near the station. Would highly recommend
- Timea (10/5): Exceptional -
- K.l. (9/5): Superb - The style The noise from nearby railway
- Micah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Steve (7/5): Good -
- Chaofan (8/5): Very good -
- Sharon (10/5): Lively stay, wound highly recommend! - Loved the traditional setup and layout of the place, including the lovely zen garden. Stairs are steep but fine once u get use to it.
- Chun (10/5): Exceptional - Plenty of Space. Relatively close to Kyoto Station Nothing
- Alessandro (10/5): Where tradition meets modern in Kyoto! - We spent 3 nights at Rinn Umekoji and I have to say that it was one of the best accommodations we stayed in Japan.
This is a modernized version of a traditional Japanese house and it is really comfortable developing on two floors. The area where the apartment is located is very quiet and you have to check in at a hotel not far from there. The staff will reach out with all the needed information for a smooth check-in process.
The kitchen is fully equipped and we prepared our own food there. The bathroom feels like a sauna and it is very comfortable.
The only minor thing is that they do not have a parking spot for a car if you are travelling with one but they suggest a few located at walking distance.
Overall this was an amazing stay!
- Jason (8/5): - Nice traditional style Japanese house. Not super far from Kyoto station. Very nice shower/bath area. Futons were very thin and not much cushioning. Overall a pleasant stay
- Caroline (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sheona (9/5): Tradition meets luxury - A great way to experience machi-ya style living. A lovely, relaxing way to spend our time in Kyoto. The rooms have been done up really nicely, and the Rinn scent is soo good! Convenient location, and really helpful staff.
- Andrés (3/5): A lot of noise. The train tracks are next door. - A lot of noise. The train tracks are next door.
- Maria (8/5): Very good -
- Judith (10/5): The Japanese townhouse was perfect in authenticity, convenience, cleanliness and location. - We absolutely adored the Japanese townhouse with traditional sliding doors, entrance, mats, futons, low table and floor seating. It was spotlessly clean and the facilities including a washing machine were excellent. Its location was perfect and there was a craft market in the park nearby on Saturday.
- Corinna (5/5): Nice traditional Japanese house but awful location and overpriced - The house is very spacious and the interiors are very traditional. The spaces were all very clean. Overall the house itself is very nice. The location is awful. The house is located next to the train tracks and there are trains running at night and can be heard from the bedroom. You can also hear the neighbours through the walls. The house its close to the station but not close to the main attractions in Kyoto and didn’t feel super safe walking back at night cause the surroundings are very dark.
- Fen (8/5): Very good -
- Emily (9/5): Superb -
- Cecilia (9/5): Lovely house with all that is needed to be comfortable. If you want to cook, the kitchen doesn’t have any food supplies - It was tucked in a lane that the provided taxi brought us to. House has a steep staircase that led to upper floors where two bedrooms are. Rooms are of good size that fits 5 pax nicely. Steep staircase with narrow steps made it difficult to bring the luggages to bedroom, so we left it downstairs.
- Ryan (10/5): Authentic classic beautiful experience - The toilet at ground floor is too far away from the shower
- Michelle (8/5): Nice traditional Japanese style home. A perfect place for family to stay. -
- Ho (7/5): Good -
- Tony (9/5): Very enjoyable stay in a unique traditional home. - Property is in a residential area in with a narrow street, cars may not enter but the area is quiet.
Keys are picked up from an off-site office, they will provide taxi service to the property at no charge
Front desk held our luggage after check out for the day
Condo is a very charming traditional Japanese style machiya with fully equipped kitchen, small hot tub, small garden area and comfortable futons. Property is about a 20 min walk from the train station. Trains from adjacent tracks can be a little noisy at night
- Cassandra (9/5): Superb -
- Juan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marcus (10/5): Exceptional -
- Siobhann (9/5): Loved staying here for 1st time in Kyoto! - it was authentic Japanese, loved the zen garden, bathroom and having more space than a hotel room. it was nice to cook our own meals too. The futon beds weren’t as comfy as a traditional bed, the pillows were quite hard and only people who are really agile can stay here due to the steep stairs.
- K (10/5): I will be back! - This is the best machiya we had stayed. The staff were very helpful. The refurbishment turns the old structure to a more comfy stay for modern living. Was a little struggle at first to find this, after few times we found this unit are easy access to different bus stops. The staff attended to our spoilt heater instantly. The kitchen is superb, equipped with kitchen towel and all necessary utensils. The key collection is not within the Kyoto Station building, we had spent longer time searching outside for that. The taxi driver cant find our unit and end up we need to walk with our luggage to the unit. Cloth hanging place is minimal as only one coat stand.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Property is clean and nicely decorated. The staff is friendly. If you're used to western style sleeping accommodations it may be a little difficult to adjust to an eastern style. Given that this was a whole house in a neighborhood, the front door lock was a liitle too flimsy for my peice of mind, however the management may feel that was adequate. Overall, this is a very nice property to experience a Japanese style home.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Japan Dec Trip - A very comfortable stay. The place is very spacious. The only thing i do not like is that the stairs to the top floor is very steep.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Traditional Japanese House - The house has 2 floors, and the stairs are very oblique. Not convenient to elders and children. But it was a good experience to stay. And the facilities are good.
- Verified traveler (10/5): GREAT for a taste of Japanese Living - GREAT place to stay if you want a taste of Japanese Living, and close enough to the Kyoto Station to walk. We arrived in Kyoto earlier than the check-in time, so the staff was kind enough to keep our luggage at their office, then deliver it to the house for us so that we didn't have to go back to the office to pick it up. My only recommendation would be that you ask the staff to turn the heat on before you arrive if you are staying there during the winter... the house was freezing when we got there, and we had to wear our coats and hats for some time before it was warm enough to dress down.
