Guest Reviews
- Ruby (9/5): It was very pleasant and I will stay there again. - The hotel serves continental breakfast, however they are happy to make eggs for the guests. The offerings were more than what we expected or needed.
Location was great. The greatest assets to thus hotel is not just its history, it is the staff. Lingish, Chris, Bryan, Albert, El Lynn and all others were exceptionally good. Linens and bath robes were clearly frayed and looked very old and should be changed. While it did not bother me it may be an issue for others. I would recommend the hotel to do this minor improvement.
- Adrian (9/5): - The staff were so friendly and helpful.
- Frederic (10/5): -
- Eupnoos (10/5): - Incredible property. Fantastic and personal service. Great location Pool closes too early
- Marcus (10/5): -
- James (8/5): Gorgeous place, could be great with some small changes - Beautiful property, well located, comfortable beds. The pool wasn’t clean on the day I swam in it, very green and cloudy. I also think the lack of a bar or any kind of purchasable items was a bit disappointing as I’d have liked to spend more time in the beautiful surroundings.
- Jin (10/5): Lovely boutique hotel, great service and comfortable room - From friend Nothing
- Sicco (8/5): - Well located in downtown George Town. Nicely renovated building, airconditioned where needs be. No invoice provided at checkout. First time ever I experience a Hilton affiliated hotel refusing to provide an invoice because the booking was through Booking.com instead of their own website. If providing an invoice is so much trouble for you, stop advertising hotel space through booking.com.
- lucy (10/5): - The hotel is so lovely. A real gem. With the most helpful and attentive staff and excellent advice on what to do. Would always recommend this place

- Jared (10/5): - This property is exceptional. Every member of the staff was amazing with impressive service across the board. I would love to return and will recommend the Edison without hesitation. Amazing hotel.
- Jolene (10/5): - Love being able to stay at a property with beautiful architecture and full of history. We love the lounge area where all the guests meet for breakfast, tea or coffee and mingle with one another. It’s cosy and comfortable. I would like to commend Albert Tan, the operations manager for his many recommendations, making our visit to Penang very fruitful. The rooms were not completely comfortable as air conditioning is noisy. Place also is not convenient for those less able.
- Bessie (9/5): -
- Richard (9/5): The staff were excellent and could not do enough for you - It was a traditional atmosphere with basic amenities but exactly what we wanted when we visited Penang Nothing really
- Kenneth (10/5): - This boutique hotel offers everything. Awesome staff. Big rooms. Enjoyable breakfast. Love the happy hr. Get to meet other guests. Staff always happy to help and recommend options for dining in the local area. Albert and Phai Lee and other staff were always on hand to help out. Great old building beautifully maintained. The pool was an added bonus after a long day exploring.
- LA (10/5): Stay here! - Absolutely everything from the decor, comfy bed, added complimentary extras and the go above and beyond staff. Big shout out to Albert! We couldn't fault it.
- Valerie (10/5): - The lounge is open 24/7! Staff are lovely and helpful. Very personable and hospitable. My partner and I have been staying only at The Edison each time we visit Penang and we will not consider anywhere else! The beer garden across is rather noisy but they stop their ravelling at midnight so that is a good thing!
- Michel (9/5): -
- Rutger (10/5): -
- Ric (9/5): Super place, super locale. - Central location and staff were great. Albert looked after us beautifully, and the lounge/common room was a great resource. Pool was also great. Just beware it can be noisy with adjacent live music, especially on Saturdays. But this is the price you pay for being so central.

- Briggis (10/5): Exceptional - A Dream Stay at The Edison – Penang’s Best Boutique Hotel!
From the moment we arrived at The Edison, we were swept away by its charm and elegance. This boutique hotel, housed in a beautifully restored historic mansion, feels like stepping into a piece of Penang’s rich heritage – but with all the modern comforts you could ever want.
The location is simply unbeatable: right in the heart of George Town’s UNESCO heritage center, making it effortless to explore the city’s colorful streets, historic landmarks, and vibrant food scene.
The interiors are absolutely gorgeous. Every detail, from the grand entrance to the tranquil courtyard, has been lovingly preserved and tastefully updated. Our room was spacious, airy, and refreshingly cool – a perfect retreat after wandering through the tropical heat.
The pool is a hidden jewel – calm, inviting, and surrounded by lush greenery. We spent hours there unwinding. And the complimentary all-day lounge? What a fantastic idea! Whether you need a quick snack, a cold drink, or just a quiet corner to relax, it’s always available and beautifully stocked.
But what truly elevates The Edison to a class of its own is the exceptional staff. They are the very soul of this hotel – warm, professional, and endlessly helpful. From the front desk to the housekeeping team, every single person we encountered went out of their way to make us feel welcome and cared for. Their restaurant recommendations were outstanding, and they gave us wonderful tips for excursions that made our stay unforgettable.
The Edison isn’t just a hotel – it’s an experience. It combines heritage, comfort, and a level of hospitality that is rare to find. We travel often, but few places have left such a lasting impression.
If you’re visiting Penang, don’t even think twice. Stay at The Edison. It’s hands down the best hotel in the city, and we can’t wait to come back! Nothing
- Rachael (9/5): Superb -
- David (10/5): - Albert and his team did a great job hosting me for 2 nights ! Hotel is efficient but also very laid back . It’s an old mansion and some of the public areas do not have AC . Anywhere you would like to me had AC and was comfortable ! Free non- alcoholic drinks and snacks available . Breakfast prepared to order eggs were great ! Lap pool is good location to chill out after a busy day ! Looking forward to returning ! Check my postings I don’t give many 5 star ratings
- Erik (8/5): Very good - perfect location. Room is a bit bare room furniture too little and no wall paintings?
- Pamela (10/5): Best stay in Penang - ever! - Everything! Beautiful room, excellent location, great breakfast, exceptional staff - huge thank you to Albert who was wonderful - organising different restaurants, food tours, sights to see and anything else we wanted to know. Could not fault this property - exceptional
- Nhật (10/5): Amazinf - Excellent hotel, from historic materials to extremly friendly staff. Location is also the best ị Georgetown. Mr Albert is verry supportive. Dont hesitate to book this hotel, it's worth every penny
- Su (10/5): Excellent - Great stay
Comfortable clean room
Lounge great to hang out
Staff friendly and accommodating, remember your previous stays
- Liung (10/5): Well taken care of by the staff makes coming back to the property each time something to look forwar - Excellent location and very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff, especially Albert and Andrew made my stay extra pleasant. The pool water should be better maintained for cleanliness.
- Susan (10/5): A step back in time but with all the modern day comforts. - Friendly helpful staff who were generous with time in offering advice and answering questions. It was lovely to be able to sit and have a complimentary glass of wine during happy hour each afternoon. The bed was extremely comfortable and the atmosphere of the hotel was charming.
- Yit (9/5): great short stay!! - For us the hospitality was great and want to give a shout out to Albert and his team. Although it was a short stay it has been one of the best stays so far in Penang and we have stayed in many places.
location was great
there was parking
complimentary light refreshments
pool due to the preservation of the beautiful architecture just be very careful of the steep stairs.
Its not neccesary a negative thing but with age catching up just need to be extra caution.
- Antonio (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jan (10/5): Unique accommodation in a heritage building in a special part of the world. - Beautiful heritage building, very quiet, great service from friendly staff including Albert, Andrew and Chris. Fresh cooked breakfast nothing too much trouble. Spotlessly clean room. Beautiful pool to cool off in.
Great location. Nothing to complain about. But steep stairs if your room is upstairs. We booked ground floor room.
- Laura (10/5): Relaxing stay in a beautiful heritage building - Beautiful building with spacious rooms, a lovely lounge/breakfast area and a shaded pool. Perfect for exploring GeorgeTown. The staff were great and very helpful offer plenty of recommendations. We had breakfast included, snacks and cold drinks whenever you like in the lounge area and umbrellas to protect you from the sun (use them!!). Would highly recommend. A small thing but a door rather than a curtain on the bathroom would be nice to offer a bit more privacy.
- Emily (9/5): Superb -
- Kenneth (10/5): Very nice place… good feeling - Albert and staff fabulous
- Sharifah (10/5): Lovely cosy boutique hotel, not many frills but just right for my needs. Good location, private parking area (not always - The hotel is small and cosy, and provides all the amenities i need. I loved the old colonial building vibe. The lounge with free flow of drinks and snacks was a bonus. Staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Slightly pricey, but overall it was worth it
- Louise (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kevin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tanya (9/5): Superb -
- Martyn (10/5): Lovely relaxing week in a historic former mansion house - Excellent breakfast and snacks and soft drinks available all day
Friendly professional staff
Ver comfortable rooms Nothing
- Hedy (9/5): Superb -
- Christopher (8/5): Very warm welcome at a beautiful boutique hotel - I felt the contiental breakfast could have been more generous and varied. Only one small bowl of fruit available " this seems unfair in a country of marvelous fruits at v cheap price.also no fresh juice just packet
Bathroom only separed from bed by curtain ok but not ideal for privacy on" the throne"
Manager and staff very friendly and helpful with excellent recommendations
Great location for sightseeing and restaurants- interesting historic building beautiful appointed
- Lillian (8/5): Beautiful hotel in an authentic historical mansion right in the heart of Georgetown - Spacious room with lofty ceiling. Elegant authentic interior design of the historical mansion. Complimentary glass of wine & snacks in evening. Very helpful operational manager. Long flight of stairs to the upper floor rooms though their staff are quick to assist with luggage. No views from rooms as windows are locked with traditional textured glass.
- Cheng (8/5): Very good -
- Tanya (9/5): Superb - Great location and extremely helpful staff
- Jillian (9/5): Charming - Staff were SO helpful, service fantastic. We forgot to change room to ‘please service my room’ after asking for privacy but they came even at the end of the day.
Room - great size but as it’s an old building only window was in bathroom and misted. Building is old and full of character though and we love smaller hotels (35 rooms) so a very quiet hotel).
Location - quiet location except for food centre across the road which has live music in the evenings but stops at 1130pm so was fine. I’m a light sleeper 😉.
Would stay again!! Malaysian hotels all have firm beds - sorry hard!
- Tida (7/5): Great hotel vibe - Stayed over the Christmas/ New Year holiday. Impressed with the impeccable service and friendliness of the staff. The room is extremely spacious with high ceiling. Really love the hotel vibe, decor, interior and exterior. Since our room is in the front of the hotel (right at the check in counter, near the entrance), it was too noisy for us even at night. You can hear people walking in and out and also noise from the room on top of my room. I really like everything about the hotel but I'm a light-sleeper and I need my quiet night to sleep well :(
- Nahida (5/5): A real mixed bag, staff and location were great, the cleanliness and soundproofing of rooms was awful. - The staff were superb and the location was great. The rooms were not cleaned properly and the sound proofing for my room was atrocious.
- Simon (10/5): Stunning hotel inside and out with nice rooms and the friendliest staff - This is a truly unique hotel in a great location. The exterior and interior of the hotel is beautiful and really well maintained. The staff are super friendly and helpful (they provided some excellent recommendations for us in terms of local vegan restaurants and places to visit). The rooms are a good size and the beds are large and comfortable. We didn't use the pool area, but it looked like a really nice place to relax. Can't really think of anything to put here to be honest. If you're staying in Penang, this place is where you should be staying.
- June (10/5): This hotel is an excellent choice! - This is a beautiful,1906 hotel that has been maintained its historic floors, metal post and iron works, and general appearance. The breakfast was nice and the lounge was open with drinks and snacks all day. The people were very helpful and did their best to make our stay happy! We recommend it!
- Jo (10/5): Calmness in the heart of Georgetown - Beautiful small hotel in the centre of Georgetown. Super relaxed / at home vibe when staying there, and the building is very interesting.
- Brendan (9/5): great location fantastic staff - great conversion of an historical building - we liked the ‘kitchen’ styled dining room very social space to eat and have a drink at night - nice happy hour idea to provide guests wine and nibbles between 6 and 7. Staff are all brilliant always ready to have a chat - good knowledge of George Town sites and restaurants - would definitely return. our room was just beside reception and near the pool which was ok but i think i would request an upstairs room if i returned just to make the stay perfect !
- Ruth (10/5): Brilliant, we will return - Outstanding staff, position, design, and overall experience. Well selected team who made us feel at home in Penang and met our needs with a positive bright, character filled culture. Everything was on point
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great service - Lovely room, great service, comfy bed.
Fantastic welcome and orientation to the hotel and area.
Room on main floor was very noisy from room above, so maybe take upper room if light sleeper (though could be noisy wirth rain)
- Gail (9/5): Superb - We loved the location, the super friendly, efficient & helpful staff, the relaxed atmosphere, stylish rooms, refreshing pool, elegant building & delicious food & drinks. We loved the evening drinks & nibbles. The staff were so attentive throughout our stay. Would highly recommend. Perhaps jugs of cold water in the fridge. But this is a very small issue.
- Diane (10/5): Quaint interesting historic hotel - Great hotel with a lot of history. Amazingly helpful staff. However if walking up stairs is an issue for you then maybe not stay here - no lift although there are ground floor rooms
- Marina (10/5): Overall an excellent stay! - The location, staff and rooms.
- Jean-francois (6/5): Very noise hotel but too noisy - The staff is great, always smiling and willing to help. Located nearby a Karaoke which makes noise every night until 12pm-1am. Very very annoying.
- Azmin (8/5): Very good -
- Shaun (9/5): lovely property, fantastic service. - building had great character. room (we had suite) was very spacious & well equipped. good breakfast & food & snacks available all day. best part were the staff who were all outstanding- brilliant service. only slight concerns were that hot water didn’t last that long in shower & nearby music (although always stopped before midnight).
- Wilhelmina (10/5): Lovely stay at a great hotel - It is a beautiful hotel on walking distance of the city center. The staff and service were great and the complementary drinks and snacks were very nice. We had a room on the ground floor close to the reception, which can be a bit noisy.
- Chin W (10/5): - This is my sixth visit at The Edison. The staff makes our stay very welcoming & warm every time.
- Matthew (9/5): Lovely heritage hotel, wonderful staff and a great location. - The staff were all excellent, attentive, friendly, the priority was always the guests and making the stay the best possible. Albert was particularly helpful and shared his extensive knowledge of Penang. Amazing lounge with snacks and drinks available 24/7 and nice wine and cheese every evening. The hotel is a wonderful heritage building with amazing history. However the rooms have no natural light and no outdoor space, the would be the main things missing with the room.
- Lisa (9/5): Friendly staff, pleasant environment, and great location - Beautiful property. Love the location , the staff’s friendly demeanor, and ever-helpful services. Love the lounge area! Wish the Internet services in the rooms are better. This is a must in these days and age, especially for those of us who need to work and look for things to do, eat, and shop in an area that isn’t familiar to us.
- Kenny (10/5): Exceptional - Love the architecture and the charm of the building and the above and beyond service of the staff especially Albert. The WiFi was slow
- Laura (8/5): Beautiful heritage building with amazing staff - Really beautiful old building in a very good central location. Staff were beyond helpful and helped us to plan our itenary for our stay, they also sent a list of places to eat and drink before we arrived which can in really handy. Theres a communal lounge area with free snacks/drinks which was a great addition. The pool and outdoor seating space is really nicely done, and very peaceful considering the central location. Noise from the hawker centre opposite was quite loud in our room, but seemed to stop at a reasonable time. Bathroom has a curtain rather than a door which I don’t think helps with the noise either. Our double room was quite small for our stay, so would probably choose to upgrade next time.
- Jasmyn (10/5): The Edison was a fantastic hotel. - The staff at the Edison were beyond accomodating and made our stay in Penang delightful, providing many useful recommendations. The hotel was beautiful and calming, the facilities (i.e., the pool & dining area) were exceptional and the rooms were spacious. The location of the hotel was in walking distance of many of Penang’s local attractions.
- Jmm (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chu xi (10/5): - Loved this little gem.
- Jennifer (10/5): Beautiful heritage building and great central location - The location is fantastic, right where you want to be to explore George Town. And the hotel itself is great - quirky, with some lovely heritage features. But the best thing about The Edison is the staff - they were attentive but not overbearing. They listened to our requests prior to check in, and did their best to deliver a top experience. Albert, the manager, can provide tons of recommendations for meals out, places to visit, things not to miss.
- Jazzie (2/5): Very poor - Great location City center but there is a snack bar opposite till 12pm still busy and noisy and the room soundproofing is poor can't sleep well at night.
- Lucretia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sriparna (9/5): Superb - It was excellent. Loved the experience. The bathrooms need a door. Or at least the property should say that it does not have one.
- Darren (9/5): Excellent accommodation close to the heart of Georgetown. A short walk to many many great food outlets. We will be back. - The property has a lot history and it is a lovely place I couldn’t say there was anything bad about the accommodation. If anything maybe the wifi was slow.
- Cean (10/5): - We loved the historic element of the property. The location in Georgetown, Penang was also perfect. The best part of the stay was the excellent staff who offered many great suggestions for food and sightseeing and generally extended such wonderful hospitality.
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kar (8/5): Very good - Wonderful and accommodating ting staff especially Albert the manager. Well designed. Would be nice to have a delivery menu.
- Cynthia (10/5): Exceptional - Albert and the staff were outstanding!
- Che (9/5): Superb -
- Wilhelmina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christopher (10/5): A modern colonial boutique gem. - The Edison is a comfortable friendly boutique style hotel with a modern colonial vibe. Very well located in the heart of heritage Georgetown. Decor is elegant and understated. The real strength of the place though is the staff. Really nice service at all terms. Friendly and seemingly informal but ever helpful and anticipating needs, with nothing ever too much trouble. My stay was for 6 nights and it never faltered and if anything just kept on getting better. If you have mobility issues be sure to ask for a downstairs room as there are mo lifts. Only slight quibble was that wifi data rates were patchy. But overall it’s strongly recommended.
- Asha (9/5): Amazing experience. Loved the architecture and the pantry concept. Excellent service. - It’s a heritage building, from the early 1900’s
- Burt (10/5): - Beautiful hotel inside and out. Staff was extremely friendly and attentive. Breakfast and unlimited snack and drinks were great.
We could not have been happier with our stay. Thank you everyone at Edison. Room 119. Burt and Aiko
- William (8/5): A true boutique hotel - The band across the street played loud music until 2330. The staff were amazingly wonderful and good. This is a true boutique hotel not to be confused with anything modern, but it was truly comfortable and charming.
- Gerry (10/5): Brilliant stay - We received a warm welcome on our arrival . Albert gave us wonderful recommendations for restaurants and sight seeing . The room was comfortable and stylish. Breakfast was lovely . Snacks and drinks were provided day and night. Happy hour with a free wine and nibbles was a lovely touch . The staff were outstanding with lovely senses of humour. I loved the pool . Nothing was ever too much for Albert . He spent ages sorting out flights for us and was always Hayton give advice Loved it all .
- Suraya (9/5): Superb - Gorgeous property, helpful staff, good location, private parking with EV chargers, free flow of snacks, fruits and soft drinks! Breakfast is too basic and lack variety, no Netflix.
- Jixin (8/5): Good experience. - Staff are very nice and helpful. Location is good. Room is clean. Wifi coverage is not so good. Internet does not really work in the room.
- Richard (10/5): Edison, we will come back again! - top attendance of service staff.
great ambience of the old colonial Penang
near to everything you want to see of Georgetown
- Bruce (9/5): Good location, attentive staff, great room. - Good location, attentive staff, great room. The karaoke accross the street.
- Shirley (6/5): -
The staff were attentive to our every need, from recommending local restaurants to booking a taxi to the airport. Unfortunately the noise levels just beyond us . There is singing club just across the street and will start @ 9:30 and last till 11:30 pm every night . Wi-Fi was patchy . If u need Wi-Fi , this is not the hotel for you.
- D T (8/5): - Good stay, best part is the service.
- Farook (10/5): - Very convenient location to all the major tourist areas around Georgetown. The staff was amazing and very helpful, always there to help plan the day with recommendations and providing tips. The only downside was the WiFi was slow. Overall, excellent hotel.
- Leslie (9/5): Style, comfort, excellent service - Attentive, helpful staff (all of them). Comfortable, stylish. Large bedrooms. Well situated to visit the historic sites and interesting streets of George Town (20-25-minute walk to the former). The pool is shaded by trees almost all day. This is not evident from the photos on Booking.com.
- Lauren (8/5): Loved it, would highly recommend! - Such a beautiful place!
Staff were amazing
Love the complimentary drinks in the evening, creates such a nice vibe
Room sizes are incredible
Loved it and would definitely go back! Need to cut back the trees around the pool so that you can actually sunbathe/ get some sun around the pool
Whole building inside and out needs a paint refresh and then this place would be perfect!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Beautiful but complete lack of maintenance - Beautiful hotel, nice staff, but unfortunately it is not being maintained. Facilities are not i good condition (e g. Pool has hanging light), indoor sofa is moldy and stained, outdoor shutters are peeled off, doors don't close well, birds constantly inside the lobby entrance which from a cleanliness standing is not great Cleanliness of the rooms was subpar. Staff broke a perfume bottle while cleaning and did not report it - found out from left over glass shard and strong smell of perfume...). Such a shame as this hotel could be fantastic and the staff was nothing but helpful. However big investment needs to be made in upkeeping and training. Without this, i think it should be removed from the small luxury hotels group/website.
