Guest Reviews
- Louise (10/5): Great onsen in a lovely part of Japan - We stayed for a couple of nights at this onsen and would highly recommend. It was easy to get to from the local train station. We arrived from Sendai and took a day trip towards Yamagata and on both occasions a shuttle bus was waiting to take us to the hotel without advanced booking. The staff at reception spoke some English and with our limited Japanese we were checked in quite quickly. I'd say it was useful to understand a little Japanese, but by no means necessary to check in and enjoy the hotel. Key information is available in English and throughout the resort staff were wonderfully helpful. Our room was Japanese style and clean and comfortable. Robes and slippers were provided along with an overcoat which you can wear around the hotel, to the baths, communal areas and meals etc. The baths themselves were gorgeous, there were large public baths for men and women and 3 natural baths that alternated between men and woman's use morning and afternoon so everyone could enjoy them all during their stay. The natural baths are particularly recommended, with beautiful scenery to enjoy from them. Whilst the booking we made was described as half board, it was a bit more than that as snacks and soft drinks were provided throughout the day and beer and whisky later in the day. The food was delicious. Not entirely sure what everything was, but all delicious! More than enough easily recognisable food from a western perspective if you wanted to play safe and eat what you know though!
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Stephanie (8/5): - The onsen was fantastic, so were the restaurants. We ran into several language issues so best to go with a local or if you can speak the language - there are a small handful of staff who could speak English but otherwise, it was usually a comical scene of chickens talking to ducks :)
There are free shuttle pick ups from Sakunami station - the trains run hourly from Sendai station so you can be sure of a yellow bus waiting for you when you get off. I believe there is also ONE daily pick up and drop off at Sendai station - the pick up from Sendai station is at 3pm (i think!) and the bus leaves the onsen at 11am daily, to arrive at Sendai station at 12 noon thereabouts. So if you can't make the 3pm pick up, just take the 40 min train ride to Sakunami station for the hourly pick up.
There is also a free shuttle to and fro Nikka Distillery - a must go if you are staying for more than a night. You need to check with the hotel staff for timings. I'm not sure what other services they had, but worth asking if you can speak japanese...
There's little to do in the surrounding areas (within walking distance). We only found a really quaint convenience store (unlike your usual Lawsons/FamilyMarts, so manage your expectations!), a great bbq place and a little ramen store. So do drive or be prepared to just lounge around in the onsen - not necessarily a bad thing :)
Finally, the buffet dinner is also fantastic - make time for that!
