- Barbara (10/5): - Friendly Nichole called the day of our stay to give us a heads up on check-in (piece-o-cake.) If you love old architecture, this is for you. This review for SOUTHERN BELLE ROOM. Outer walls brick, inner walls padded fabric. 10-ft ceilings and 18” crown molding! It was a hot day, and we expected our room to be warm with west exposure and 4 big single-pane windows. But they must have a tremendous ventilation system; it was very comfortable. The room had good blackout curtains. They do stand apart and away from the wall a bit. so if you’re a privacy freak, just bring a few clothespins. Someone did a great job cleaning the room. The clawfoot tub sports a few scuffs, but has a perfect angle for soaking, way better than modern tubs. The mattress was pretty comfortable. The 4-poster frame is beautiful; it did squeak quite loudly when I turned over. Beautiful old furniture does that. There’s a lounge upstairs with frig & microwave, chairs & magazines, coffee/tea fixings, extra towels, ironing board, and an entrance to the rooftop deck. Even flashlights to step out there after dark. They’re upgrading the patio area—a great spot for morning coffee by the flowers. You may have a visitor cat. Food isn’t served there, but if you bring microwave food, you can use tables and an ice machine in the dining room. There’s also a great room for guests to relax in. One train went around bedtime—close and loud and fun! If any more went in the night, we didn’t hear them.

- Mario Israel (10/5): Wonderful charming hotel - I had a very good experience at this cozy hotel. My room was clean and the décor was very unique. The service was excellent—the young lady who attended to us was very kind. The hotel is located next to the train tracks, and during the early morning you could hear the train passing by, but it wasn’t bothersome at all. Plus, they provide earplugs in the room in case the noise bothers you.

If we had needed to be upstairs, it would have been a challenge to get luggage up there. It was somewhat of a challenge with stairs in front and back. Not very senior adult friendly. This could have been communicated better.

The interior was made to match - it’s conveniently located off the Interstate, and it’s located in a quaint and charming small town. - Jacob (10/5): A fantastic blast from the past! - My family really enjoyed our stay. The setting of the town and hotel/bed and breakfast was so fun. It takes you back a little for sure. The rooms were comfortable and we enjoyed exploring the town. There are no tvs in the rooms so it forced the kids and us to explore. We found the fun museums and businesses around as well as the park at the school. We chose to drive about 6 miles to Arrow Rock for supper and ate at Catalpa. We would definitely eat at Catalpa again. The next morning we enjoyed exploring more in Blackwater, sitting on the rooftop balcony, playing cards and thouroughly enjoyed our breakfast. Nichole was so welcoming and a fantastic host. My wife is planning a return visit soon with her friend.

There is a nice first floor parlor for relaxing/reading and a beautiful staircase leading up to the bedrooms. Breakfast, served in an old fashion dining room, was good. The town has no restaurant for evening dinner or drinks. Fortunately, we ate before we arrived in town.

With only one other room occupied and no night manager on duty, I felt I had the run of the place, could check it all out including all the other guest rooms. Lots of places to linger: parlor, roof terrace, front porch, garden. a very nice breakfast was provided. This historic hotel is called "Iron Horse" (as in train) and yes, it is next to railroad tracks AND RR crossing which is active day & NIGHT: expect 4 loud whistles and train noises as trains approach and pass by very close (you have been warned). Also, there are major inconveniences especially at their price: there are clawfoot bathtubs with no shower curtains or anything to hold the shower head (in every room they have), so if you like showers, this is not the place for you! I skipped my shower that night. And maybe because they expect that, they offer only a tiny soap chip, enough to wash you hands with but not enough for a bath/shower. No place in the BR to hang a towel. There are no TVs as it wouldn't fit the decor but if you like a TV (in your room) - this place is NOT for you. No fridge either (although you can use the fridge in the common room upstairs or downstairs in the kitchen). A/C was set very cold and blew cold air in my face lying in the bed. In this property the A/C cannot be individually controlled in your individual room and no extra blankets were provided, in other words: I was cold at night. I pointed out some of these shortcomings to the manager the next morning but I don't think my remarks were taken well.

Room was large and we were able to accommodate our dog and have access to patio to take her outside. Enjoyed some of the birds in the trees right outside our room. The young woman running this place is doing her best to make it nice! The room we stayed in could use some new pillows. There was only an old clawfoot tub and no shower in this room but I am sure this was mentioned when I booked it. This is probably great for some folks! We did hear 3 trains come through during the night, but we were aware it was near train tracks.

- Leigh (10/5): Close to the Lyceum Theatre - Old quaint hotel. Very clean, full breakfast included in room price. Be reminded, NO TV in room but we had our laptop and were able to stream a movie. We stayed here in conjunction with seeing a show at The Lyceum in Arrow Rock.

- Kcgd (10/5): Beautiful hotel in a pretty and quaint town - We loved everything about our stay - the room was pretty and comfortable; breakfast both mornings was awesome. The town is very small but scenic and has many renovations. Dining options for lunch and dinner were a bit limited, but there are other towns within driving distance. The manager was friendly and helpful. There was nothing we didn't like. The outside patio was pleasant. Lobby area was furnished with beautiful antique furnishings. The bathroom was roomy, and the clawfoot tub worked great.
