- Claudia (10/5): Outstanding - Everything, as soon as we arrived we were welcomed by the host with a tea ceremony and taiyaki grilled on the small open fire area. The whole property was clean, tidy and we loved the little Japanese traditional features mixed with western comforts. The baths were run on arrival and it was so lovely after a busy day to get in the outside bath and relax. I can not fault the accommodation. We will definitely come and stay again. Also I forgot the morning bento boxes were stunning, just an amazing stay and memories made Nothing
- Virginia (10/5): Samurai house in Kyoto - Amazing house and great host. You can do your tea ceremony at home in the room with a samurai and the traditional fire. The owner is very welcoming and available for all needs you may have. Just a bit far away from the city centre but the quarter was very calm and the bus worked well.
- Brian (10/5): Perfect! - Amazing place with everything you could ask for: Two baths! Heated floor! A samurai sword! Great breakfast! Also, the host (Hiro) was super nice. Not a lot going on nearby (restaurants etc.) - you need to go to the city centre for that. On the other hand, it also means that the neighbourhood is quiet and serene.
- Kirrin (10/5): Exquisite traditional Japanese home to remember always - Exquisite ambiance.
- Michael (10/5): Amazing and unique stay in a quiet residential neighborhood - Unique property, exactly as it looks in pictures, located in a quiet residential neighborhood but still conveniently near public transportation. Gracious host who brings a Japanese breakfast every morning and fills up the indoor and outdoor bath every afternoon/evening before you return.
- Cintia (10/5): Amazing place! Highly recommend - From the moment we arrived, Hiro made us feel at home with a warm and luxurious welcome that included a tea ceremony. The house is charming, spacious, clean, thoughtfully decorated and equipped with everything we needed. The washing machine is excellent. Hiro's breakfasts were interesting and varied, and the children were really looking forward to finding out what meal awaited them in the morning. In addition, the communication with Hiro was excellent, he is available and helps with everything we need, including receiving and sending luggage. And the onsen is so pleasant! We used it every evening. In short - the best place we stayed in Japan! Highly recommended. There's nothing not to like. You just have to take into account that the location is a bit far from the center of Kyoto and public transportation isn't the closest. But we managed just fine with taxis, and they're really inexpensive in Kyoto.
- Mickael (10/5): Une halte exceptionnelle qui laisse encore des étoiles dans les yeux - Un cadre exceptionnel.
Un accueil d’exception.
Une grande gentillesse Tout était parfait
- Charlotte (10/5): Hope to return soon! - Perfect location in a quiet neighborhood in Kyoto. Plenty of restaurants close by and easy access to buses. Hope was a wonderful host. The beds are very comfortable. The bath is lovely and the food was great! Nothing!
- Barbara (10/5): Incredible host! Stay if you can! - Hiro, the host, was incredible, just as the reviews described. He met us when we arrived, made matcha tea and taught us how to make it, and provided a wonderful Japanese breakfast. Not only that, since it was raining when we checked out, he drove us to our hotel in Kyoto! Truly wonderful hospitality.
- Hermione (10/5): We had a wonderful experience. - Tho most beautiful apartment which lived up to all the pictures.
- Kenneth (10/5): Highly recommended—a perfect Kyoto hideaway with a truly memorable host. - We absolutely loved our stay at Yadoya Aoi. The space is surprisingly spacious, with a full kitchen, a cozy living room, a tatami area with a tea kettle, and a bedroom with a clever partition—finally, some privacy for our daughter! And not just one, but two baths: an indoor one and a beautiful outdoor bath for soaking under the sky.
Our host Hiro was fantastic—great communication, thoughtful, and kind without being overbearing. He welcomed us with matcha and marshmallows (a huge hit with our 10-year-old), brought us a delicious Japanese-style breakfast each morning, and even surprised us with a birthday cake when he found out we were celebrating. Truly above and beyond.
The location is ideal—just outside the city center, offering a more peaceful, residential vibe that feels like real Kyoto. Still, it’s close to everything you need: we closed out a lively local izakaya one night, then hit up a popular ramen joint down the street (highly recommend—worth the wait). All within walking distance. There’s also a nearby konbini (7-Eleven) and a local grocery store, perfect for stocking the fridge.
The space itself has a funky, Japanese-kitsch charm in all the right ways. We felt truly welcomed and at home here.
Highly recommended—a perfect Kyoto hideaway with a truly memorable host. It's a little pricey.
- Alice (10/5): - The property was excellent and our host was wonderful!!
- Frances (10/5): A dream of classic Kyoto. - Perfect Japanese classic design, great location, and warmth. Soaking tub outside and the perfect host!
- Alexandria (10/5): It was so special we can't wait to visit again. - They thought about every detail and Hiro San made us feel like family. Not one thing I didn't like.
- Marcelo (10/5): Amazing Japanese experience in Kyoto with superb host - Amazing facilities, traditional Japanese experience., amazing host, Japanese Onse (spa) outside and inside, Japanese bento breakfast, heated floors, traditional tea area, washer and dryer Nothing
- Ariella (9/5): This is a wonderful, comfortable property in a cool neighborhood of Kyoto with a lovely host. -
- Bradlee (10/5): Hiro-San was absolutely incredible, and made a phenomenal trip even more amazing. - Location, Facilities, and most importantly, Hiro-San. N/A
- George (10/5): Would highly recommend - It’s a stunning, amazing, authentic traditional Japanese house yet with all the bells and whistles of a modern living. Think of it as a VIP one of a kind experience. Hiro was an amazing host. Whatever we asked for he delivered including delicious breakfast and desserts. We loved every minute of our stay there Everything was perfect
- Ilyas (1/5): Dark cave - What we usually expect when booking accommodation on booking. Com setting the filter Only 5 star object when choosing a hotel with a price per night around 500 dollars
1.excellent varied breakfast with hot dishes
2.varied high-quality service from the hotel
3.proximity to tourist locations
4.comfortable sleeping conditions in the room What we finally got in Yadoya Kyoto Shimogamo, in our understanding, has NOTHING in common with an accommodation facility that can be marked with 5 stars!
-renovated in the style of a Japanese house the first floor of an old building
-cold breakfast sandwiches in a box in the refrigerator which we couldn’t eat and we had to go 10 minutes to a cafe for breakfast in the morning
-location in the center of a residential area, 20 minutes by taxi from the station
-there is no normal ventilation in the rooms; you can’t breathe due to air conditioning
- there is not a single window in the room and there is a feeling that you are in a cave
- Kinga (10/5): Exceptional - The location is quiet and residential but near a large temple. The host is very friendly, and responsive. He made some tea and also brought breakfast.
Lastly, the breakfast was very delicious!
- Erika (10/5): So much more than we expected. The hospitality was beyond. - Unique, luxurious, and traditional. Absolutely nothing. We loved it!
- Jade (10/5): Everyone in my group had a great time and we would recommend any one staying in Kyoto to stay here. - The home was beautiful and had a lot of traditional elements mixed in with modern day conveniences. This place has an amazing outdoor bath! The host was very kind and greeted my group with a matcha tea. He also cleaned the house while we were gone and made us delicious traditional bento boxes for breakfast. My fiancé mentioned that we had got engaged during our travels and the host surprised us with a congratulations cake. Overall an amazing stay at a wonderful place!
- Connor (10/5): Amazing accommodations from an outstanding host. - Quiet and beautiful area, very well decorated. Hiro has thought of everything and was very accommodating. I wish I were staying longer! Lots to do locally. Minutes away walking from Kamo River, botanical garden, and two beautiful shrines.
- Matthew (9/5): Lovely traditional place to stay which gives a lovely introduction to Japanese culture and food. - This is the second time I stayed here. The host is wonderful taking a lot of trouble to make sure everything is excellent.
- Isabella (10/5): Once in a lifetime stay. Just a dream! - Honestly, this stay was the highlight of our holiday; staying in this house was a dream. Hiro, the owner, is the kindest person in the world and adds a special touch to everything. Our stay was simply perfect, and I cannot recommend this place enough. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, truly the best.
I also loved the area of the house, the neighborhood is authentic and so beautiful. Nothing, everything was perfect.
- Karnpal (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shakeel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mario (10/5): Top of the best -
- Shaun (10/5): A highlight of our first visit to Japan - Hiro was an amazing host! He met us on arrival and treated us to a traditional tea ceremony with marshmallows, which the kids loved. He has created a unique experience that marries the traditional and cultural elements of Japan with the comforts of modern western living. Being able to sleep on traditional Japanese beds, experience the outdoor bath, and eat the wonderful Japanese breakfasts were a highlight of our trip. While the location is residential, it is within easy reach of transport links (5 minute walk to the closest bus stop), convenience stores, and restaurants. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend a stay here, and would love to visit again! Thank you, Hiro! Nothing - it was a perfect stay and one of the highlights of our trip to Japan
- Nm (10/5): Fantastic stay in Kyoto - This guesthouse was as great as all the other reviews said. Hiro-san, the owner, met us on arrival, explained patiently everything and was extremely helpful to recommend restaurants, etc.
The property is clean, beautiful with a lot of thought for detail and comfort. It has very modern equipment, a beautiful private Japanese bath on the terrace which was great after lots of walking around in Kyoto.
It is located in a more residential area, but there is a bus stop a few minutes away, so getting to places was not difficult. We appreciated that it was a bit away from the crowds. There were restaurants and shops in the area.
We liked our Japanese breakfasts as well. Truly, it was a gem. We really liked everything. No complaints whatsoever.
- Kori (10/5): Exceptional - Hiro was amazing. So kind and thoughtful. The tea and breakfasts were delicious. And the space was beautiful. I would recommend to anyone and definitely stay again.
- Craig (10/5): Definitely stay here! - It was amazing! Decor was very cool. Host met us at the door, made us tea, and made sure we were settled. We had a couple packages sent to us which he hand delivered. He had a traditional breakfast for us every morning and a hot bath ready every night. The onsen was nice after a long day sight seeing. Easy walk to subway to subway and several restaurants. Would stay here again.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional -
- Courtney (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nagami (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrea (10/5): Hiro was kind, welcoming, and made our stay that more memorable. We highly recommend staying here. - We wanted to stay in an authentic Japanese house, and this was an antique home with all modern updates - there was nothing to be improved.
The outdoor onsen was perfect way to relax after a busy day of traveling/sightseeing. Absolutely nothing
- Asma (10/5): An incredible stay here with a wonderful host, Hiro who took great care of us! The place is stunning with traditional Ja - EVERYTHING! Nothing!
- Kathleen (10/5): Exceptional - The house and its facilities were beautiful. Hiro was a very accommodating host who had great communication and went above and beyond to give us a comfortable stay. The traditional foods provided for breakfast were delicious and filling. The Shimogamo Shrine is within easy walking distance and is absolutely gorgeous. I honestly have nothing bad to say about this location and would absolutely stay here again.
- Edward (10/5): A MUST stay!! - Upon arriving, I wanted to give 5 stars immediately. We had a bit of trouble with transportation, but Hiro (the owner) he waited for us. He was very welcoming and charismatic. This place is absolutely 1000% GORGEOUS. It's a must stay. I will now always stay here. It's like I am immediately immersed in a traditional machiya style house with an outdoor bath with such great decorative taste. He even introduced us with a tea ceremony. The entirety of the house is so methodically thought out for comfort and convenience. I'm over the moon happy.
- Morgan (9/5): Superb - The Owner is a very nice person, teach us how to make matcha.
Decoration is impressive with a lot of interesting small things. We enjoy a lot, bathroom and other facilities is very clean and easy to use. Location is a little bit far away, Breakfast qty is not enough for three person.
- Alexey (10/5): Exceptional - amazing decorations, comfortable beds, 2 bath tubs, kitchen, breathtaking family room with little hearth to make tea. we had wonderful 2 nights stay.
owner greeted us, showed everything and made delicious green tea. breakfast was fantastic. there is absolutely nothing that could have been better
- Brian (10/5): Wonderful location, atmosphere and host. - Awesome house with really exciting and interesting decorations. The host, Hiro, met us on arrival. He had a fire going, made green tea over the fire for me and roasted marshmallows for my daughter. Silverware was difficult to locate. Extremely small complaint.
- Stéphane (10/5): Great experience. High recommendation - We have been welcomed by the owner. He was very helpful and spend time to explain the important things to know. Excellent breakfast
- Yuk (9/5): Superb -
