• Megs7373 (10/5): Wonderful in every way. - Absolutely no complaints. This is a beautiful small period hotel, only a ten minute drive from the Motorway, into the hills…. peace and quiet. Stayed for one night as a stopover but would have loved to stay for longer and explore the area. Very hospitable staff, beautiful room with views….. and dog friendly too. We had a lovely evening meal after G&T’s in the bar. Life is good !
• SebenickAK (10/5): Peaceful and perfect - This hotel is just far enough removed from town to avoid any excess noise or distractions. Sitting out on their sun Terrace was a most relaxing activity. The staff, especially Di and Ena, went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The restaurants had delicious cuisine worthy of the Michelin rating. We will not forget this hotel anytime soon.

Es gibt vegetarische Optionen, als Veganer wird es aber schwierig. Es gibt keine Einrichtungen wie ein Gym oder Spa. Die Anlage und Lage ist schön. Toll als Ausgangspunkt für Wanderungen.

• Verified traveler (10/5): It’s lovely but in the middle of nowhere - The hotel is lovely. However, the location is extremely remote — it is not “minutes from everything” as they describe on their website. There is no car service or restaurants, or humans near by. There is literally nothing close to it — so not recommended for solo travelers & you definitely should not go without a car! To get anywhere costs at least €70++. The dining on property is limited — in lieu of the extravagant tasting menu at the Michelin rated restaurant which I’m sure is great, the only option to eat dinner was room service. Despite having another bistro on site, it apparently was only for aesthetics. The room was beautiful & comfortable. Somehow I ended up waking with bug bites in the morning all over my arms — which is hard to say came from the room but since that’s where I was for the day & night, because I had no where to roam — one can only assume. The staff was nice & if you want complete peace & quiet, this is the place for you!

• Verified traveler (10/5): A Top class Property - Hotel IJ is a gem of a property deep in Basque country. Set in a gorgeous rural environment atop a small village and surrounded by hills and farms, it is the perfect country getaway. The building is as stunning as the photographs and the rooms have an elegant\ vintage charm to them. Regarding food, breakfast was our favourite meal with dinners at the cafe being little underwhelming. We never got a chance to try the fine dining option. All the staff was very friendly and helpful. I want to put a special mention and appreciation for some front desk staff members who went above and beyond to assist me with a concern with my car rental. I was treated unprofessionally by Avis with a car breakdown but the staff helped me with the language barrier and service concern in a foreign country and I really want to thank them for that and look forward to visiting again.

• H9644DGjohns (10/5): Excellent surprise, exceeded our expectations - We chose this hotel because we wanted to get to know the region and not have to enter the city every evening. It seemed like a good choice to us. But from the moment we arrived we discovered a place that exceeded our expectations. A friendly work group makes you feel at home. Friendliness, excellent rooms and brilliant cuisine. They have two restaurants with different characteristics. We met both, and we really rated the menu at the gastronomic restaurant with a top. The weather helped us have breakfast on the terrace all three days and it was a constant enjoyment. The detail they have in using freshly made products, excellent quality and good taste is appreciated. It has been a wonderful experience, and we will return!

• robertlQ273PU (6/5): It should be so much more but failed to impress - Getting to the hotel is to say the least interesting, a narrow and winding road leads you eventually to a delightful building which has obviously been lovingly restored by its owners, let’s start with the initial impression there is no friendly greeting by reception merely the formalities of documentation and exchange of credit card details, our room was consistent of what you would expect of an updated old Spanish residence, clean, tidy and with a modern if compact bathroom. I never like being negative but the place lacks even a modicum of ambiance, there is no feeling of warmth or hospitality, the bar area is cold and uninviting, we ate in the Bistro so can’t comment on the Michelin starred main Restaurant but the Bistro is again uninspired and lacks any sort of ambience mainly due to the appalling lighting, architecturally a delightful room but with lighting more appropriate for an airport lounge and absolutely zero ambiance, the staff strutt around with their earpieces more like bouncers than waiting staff and despite being pretty much full it was a place of silent whispers. It could be so much more but failed to impress.

• bevp321 (6/5): Should and could have been so much better - a disappointing stay - We had been really looking forward to our stay and dining experience but were sadly disappointed. The hotel building and location are beautiful but sadly a lack of attention to detail which impacted considerably on our stay. The patio tables outside were dirty, unkempt and uncomfortable. There is no comfortable lounge seating in the public spaces and the bar area feels more like a doctors waiting room with basic chairs which are uncomfortable and completely incongruous with the building and style of the hotel. It would have been helpful to have known the menu of tasting menu to allow for appropriate wine selection and the lighting in this room is incredibly bright which spoils the atmosphere. The staff seem untrained and service was chaotic and confused. A few changes could make a big difference to the comfort and enjoyment of customer experience.

• susanpN1686CV (10/5): Basque Beauty - This was our first trip to Madrid and the northern cities of Spain so we wanted to take in some of the highlights of the region. Our son and daughter-in-law met us in Donastia San Sebastián and had the wise forethought to spend a night in the Basque countryside resort at this picturesque hotel nestled in the rolling, plush green valley approximately 30 minutes outside the bustling city. The moment we drove through the winding roads of the charming town leading to the inn’s entrance I knew we were in for a delightful treat. Despite a rather greeting from the gentleman at the front desk who checked us in, we were enthralled by the decor of the interior public rooms and each of our spacious guest rooms with breathtaking sights and sounds of the outdoors. Dinner was a most impressive Michelin menu, with palatable and delectable presentations. A small but sufficient and equally tasty breakfast was served the next morning to send us off with warm and wonderful memories of our stay.
• Ryan L Tounsley (10/5): Unforgettable place. - Iriarte Jauregia is probably the best hotel we have ever stayed in. And we have stayed in a lot of wonderful and high end hotels over the years. Some of them have bigger facilities or more luxerious rooms, but overall it is difficult to put it in words how beautiful of a place it is. It is surrounded by the most idyllic scenery. The building has character and charm. The food is just superb! Michelin made their recommendation in 2021!

Breakfast is stunning as you have the opportunity to eat fresh cheese just done by the Farmers in town . An experience just as the one seen on the movies.

Located in a remote mountain town the hotel and restaurant are super nice in a historic country house castle like, very well renovated. You feel like in a medieval castle. Food and Wine were absolutely delicious. Very fresh and light menu, beautiful presentation. What a great find, deserves definitely a Michelin star.
• mhhull (10/5): Beautiful and relaxing - We loved this hotel and particularly liked it being in a quiet area. We spent days visiting nearby towns along the coast, but we looked forward to returning to relax in the afternoons and evenings. One of our favorite activities was taking a hike right out the front door of the hotel. Their Instagram page gave us perfect trekking directions for the 6 mile hike we chose. Beautiful! The breakfast every morning was delicious as well.

Our room was spotless and comfortable with an enormous bed and a choice of pillows. Easy to find from the small village nearby thanks to the signage, and a nice location outside Tolosa. We enjoyed the food in the Bistro restaurant. The ‘Bailara’ restaurant was not open at the start of the week, but we were happy with the bistro. Breakfast was terrific and the staff lovely. Will definitely stay again.

• Jia Qing (6/5): Air conditioning broken, service so-so - Property was beautiful and situated within lush greenery. Great if you want an escape into the mountains. However, my stay was not comfortable as the room I was in (202) had an air conditioning system which was really warm even at 5 degree temperature! Told staff about it and they claimed it was fixed but it was really not. And overall service was polite but felt devoid of warmth.

We stayed here for 3 nights due the location since San Sebastian and the ocean are only 40min drive away and the countryside with stunning hikes and scenery are pretty much just around the corner. Rooms are huge, clean and nicely presented. Breakfast is plentiful. We eat in the restaurant on our first evening and the meals are pretty good though. The only thing which lacks a little is the atmosphere and warmth which we would have loved to see at such small hotel in the countryside.

The hotel is a renovated 17th century palace - a beautiful building - set in scenic hills in a quiet part of the region. Room and amenities were fine, and the restaurant is excellent - as was breakfast.
