Guest Reviews
- michele (4/5): - struttura esterna e parco interni vecchi/personale vecchio
- Trevor (7/5): Acceptable accommodation for overnight stay - It’s history Long walk to room
- Robert (7/5): - The room was large and airy with a comfortable bed. The bathroom was also spacious and clean. We didn't use the common space but it looked nice. The breakfast was a continental version which was unexpected as that was not clear when booking. Otherwise the hotel was OK.
- Carsten (9/5): Great stay in a wonderful Victorian Building - The Hotel is located in a charming large old Victorian Building. My room lay at the end of a warren of hallways and stairs but was very nice, spacious and quiet. The restaurant was closed this day for some technical problem, but staff was very helpful and friendly in giving information about places to have dinner. From the hotel it is just a five minute walk downhill to the town and seaside. The bar was open and is a great place to spend the evening.
In the morning there was a nice breakfast with a large selection of food to choose.
- Susie (1/5): -
- Keren (7/5): -
- Cindy (5/5): - Frühstück war ok. Gute Kaffeemaschine.
- Shirley (9/5): Lovely building, great location, friendly staff and good food. - A beautiful castle in a great location. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The bed could have been a little more comfortable - Maybe a mattress cover would help. Also one side of the bed was very squeaky
- marine (8/5): - Chambre spacieuse, lit bébé ramené, propre Emplacement un peu éloigné :)
Pas très insonorisé
- Lisa (8/5): Fully met our expectations and the morning with Jason in the village museum was an unexpected treat! - The staff was kind enough to retrieve and hold left behind slippers until we could come back a couple days later to retrieve. Coffee machine was a delightful treat. Thank you! Would have preferred a hot breakfast.
- mairi (6/5): - Poor breakfast
- Julie (10/5): The staff are so lovely, the breakfast was more than enough, I know Princess Ann visited this hotel but I felt like roya - Overwhelmed by how amazing this hotel is absolutely gorgeous with lovely gardens too. Nothing
- Christian (7/5): -
- Jim (2/5): - The place was closed. We stayed at their other property.
- Lynne (8/5): -
- Edward (7/5): 1980s charm, comfortable, safe, convenient but outdated - Old world charm. Very 1980's. Nice entrance and bar. Dog friendly. Decent continental breakfast. Large, spacious room. Convenient stop off on way to Orkney. Safe and secure. Check out receptionist very charming. Very dated, cold when we arrived at 3pm on Friday but heating was sorted on request. Bathrooms very outdated. On arrival check in staff not very welcolming.
- Andrew (5/5): Ok - The hotel was well situated for our journey around the coast. Whilst the stay wasn’t unpleasant and the room clean and warm the staff were not welcoming and on arrival only spoke to ask me to complete the registration form, and I think did as much as they felt was needed.
- Kevin (6/5): -
- Tracy (5/5): It wax ok the food in the evening was nice but the continental breakfast was not great… - Lovely location Very run down needs up dating
- Julie (6/5): It was an old hotel with vintage interior. Some updating would make it better. - The bathroom was difficult to use as the bath was large and had no grab rails or rubber mat. The shower attachment was worn out. Needed updating.
Good was expensive.
Breakfast was continental. We waited ages for a pot of tea!
- Andrew (9/5): -
- Walter1952 (6/5): - It is a good Transit place for ferry
Comfort okay
Restaurant quite good
Staffel very nice Small room
- Sally (7/5): Clean, tidy and comfortable - The reception area looked very grand and welcoming. Loved the wide staircase in polished wood. The rooms need updating. Toilet was too close to the very hot towel rail. The rooms looked tired. Not much thought put into breakfast. I understand that they could not produce hot breakfast. But there was a very small pot of natural yoghurt out which I think I used most of so not much for anyone else. One sealed pot of cherry yoghurt out. No where to put your used tea bag so someone had put theirs on top of fresh teabags in a pot. In general not thought through.
- Gerard (9/5): - Niets
- Nicolette (7/5): -
- Peter (1/5): All very sad and out dated - Staff friendly Moved to a different Hotel
- Evi (8/5): Fijn verblijf in enig kasteel!
- Karen (7/5): Great rooms however need to upgrade water pressure and breakfast - The castle rooms were great but the showers were a big let down. The water was only a drizzle. Very hard to actually shower. The breakfast was also a let down for what we paid. However dinner the night before was great. The water flow from the showers was pretty much non existent. The breakfast which we paid for was below average.
- Luke (10/5): -
- Nigel (8/5): A pleasant stay, staff welcoming and friendly. Comfortable and clean. -
- Gini (8/5): -
- Vanessa (7/5): - Nettes Personal, tolles Ambiente Zimmer wirklich sehr in die Jahre gekommen
- Mark (10/5): As like staying in an 1800’s hotel with modern amenities. - Old world charm. Great location. We were very happy with this hotel, however Mansfield Castle hotel was actually closed when we booked. We stayed at Morangie Hotel and it was very nice.
- David (9/5): - Hotel was closed for refurb but they moved us to sister hotel in Tain. Staff really nice, place was clean and food was great.
- Daniela (9/5): - Magnifique decoration Rien
- Stewart (9/5): Great stop off for travelling further north - Excellent food
Had to miss breakfast due to early travels
Provided first class breakfast in a bag
Comfortable room
Good customer care from staff Nothing
- Vincent (8/5): -
- Bart (5/5): Teleurstellend; vergane glorie door slecht beheer - Gebouw is in potentie mooi oud; kamer ruim. Keuken gesloten (erg laat doorgegeven). Ontbijt karig.
- Hedley (10/5): -
- Helen (7/5): - Comfortable bed. Pillows just right. Quiet and slept well. Decore a bit tired. Long way up & downstairs lots of staircases to get to my room. I had asked for a ground floor room so I wouldn't have to cope with stairs.
....
- Heather (5/5): - Impressive looking building, manager very welcoming and helpful. Our room very dated, building feels in need of renovation generally.
- Ana (8/5): -
- Guest (8/5): -
- Peter (6/5): - Very tired hotel Very dark and antiquated
- David (6/5): - We did not stay at the Mansfield Castle Hotel - our booking was tranferred to the Morangie Hotel, part of the same chain in Tain. We agreed to this request from the hotel. Our stay at the Morangie Hotel was quite staisfact6or5y.
- Katja (7/5): - Lage. Abendessen war sehr lecker. Heizkörper in Bad ging nicht. Geruch
- Dawn (1/5): Very poor and service was poor - Was ignored by reception on arrival .first room was smelling very badly of dampness and was full of spiders webs and spiders .i asked to be moved to an equivalent room if possible receptionist wasn’t happy but did move me to a smaller room which I excepted as I couldn’t stay in original due to stench. Breakfast was very poor no hot food no decaf drinks and buffet didn’t have much choice and was very sparse .wouldnt go back not worth the money .only good quality was the character of the building Everything
- Fay (8/5): -
- Roger (7/5): A surprisingly pleasant stay, contradicting doom-laden expectations - This review is for the Morangie Hotel in Tain. We had booked into the Mansfield Castle Hotel in Dornoch but the proprietors contacted us in advance to say that the hotel was closed and rebooked us into their sister hotel a few miles away. No problem for us on a one-night stay in transit. The Morangie Hotel is on the outskirts of Tain in a large Victorian baronial villa with later extensions. It is everything one would expect of such a hotel, redolent of 1980s modernisation efforts but substantially untouched since then. Our doom-laden expectations were however pleasantly contradicted by a warm welcome, friendly staff, a comfortable room, a decent evening meal and a good breakfast. On approach the hotel looks tired and unwelcoming, with a large plastic dustbin stationed immediately beside the main entrance. Everything inside is well-worn, non-matching and in need of updating. Money needs to be spent. However, the skeleton staff did everything possible to make our stay pleasant. One particular criticism is that there was no wifi signal in Room 1, unacceptable for hotel visitors today,
- Guest (3/5): -
- Ken (8/5): - Very clean warm and friendly. All was great Restaurant was brilliant.
- Robyn (9/5): -
- Sarah (4/5): -
- fyrishc (4/5): Not worth it. - To book an executive room (3 in the castle) they charge you extra £40. As a main feature rooms come with the hot tub. When we got there for valentines- we were told that two rooms have the tub and one we will stay at does not! What we had was poorly cleaned room, quarter full bin and a used by previous guest tea cups. No apologies just the blame put on booking.com. Very poor. Rude receptionist too.

- Lori (9/5): Really happy with the choice. Great night sleep. - Great breakfast. Dinner fantastic. Extra friendly staff. With luggage - tough to get up and downstairs for older people.
- Simon (8/5): - Very nice welcome from the owner and receptionist Nothing
- Malcolm (4/5): A building of potential, needing severe investment and re- marketing to survive. - The breakfast was appalling. The self service selection was visually and quality wise very disappointing. Likewise the cooked breakfast was over cooked and appeared to have been re- warmed, having been cooked previously. See above. We were supposed to stay at the Mansfield but actually stayed at the Morangie. We were "upgraded" to a superior room, I dread to have stayed in a standard room. The bathroom was a disgrace.
- Leanne (1/5): very disappointed as was a birthday get away and we couldn't get food or drink - location no evening dinner as advertised
no breakfast as advertised
no bar in the evening
everything closed
- Gillian (6/5): Good location & good food but hotel decoration, amenities & bedroom facilities are all stuck in a time warp. - Great location as only a short drive from the A9 & a short walk to the town centre. Cooked breakfast was a welcome surprise (thought it was just a continental breakfast). Evening meal - good menu choice & tasty. Nice bar area. Good car parking. Although bar area was nice it was very chilly. Bedrooms, corridors etc are all very dated, hotel is stuck in a time warp. The route to the bedroom was very convoluted, upstairs, down a corridor, down some stairs then along a corridor.
- Steve (8/5): -
- Adam (10/5): -
- Max (8/5): Very nice hotel great vibe - Very nice atmosphere to the place lovely reception and bar area . The room was very clean and the staff were lovely The only thing we don’t like was that the rooms furniture was a bit dated nothing major but it was definitely quite old
- Hans_gyger (10/5): Personal & warm - We spent New Year’s and the following two days at the castle. It looks exactly like in the pictures — not the most modern place, but full of charm and character, with a clear attention to detail. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful; on the day of our departure, we were even driven to the train station, and Mr. Shearer kindly returned to the Castle just to take us there. Both breakfast and dinner were good, and they have a nice wine and whiskey selection.
We had a wonderful time at this enchanting castle in the Highlands!
Rundum zufrieden. Super Executive Suite.
- Iain (8/5): - Excellent value for money, decent size room, comfy bed good food and friendly staff. The bar was a bit quiet, and I think it could be a bit more welcoming, possibly via a log fire to provide a focal point which might encourage more people to use the bar.
- Mark (8/5): -
- Jules (9/5): - The room was large and comfortable, spotlessly clean with everything you’d expect and/or need.
All the staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming,
Breakfast was delicious and plentiful.
The shower was hot and powerful
And as an extra bonus - dog friendly
Nothing not to like about our stay ! Nothing to complain about !
- Amy (10/5): amazing would come again - the bath the hot tub was temperamental
- Jon (8/5): - Our stay was not actually at the castle, we had to be moved to the Morangie Hotel because of an unexpected issue with the castle. Thus, my review is of the hotel, not the castle. Staff were great and happy accommodate. Easy check-in and let us store our bags while we explored the town after checkout. Convenient restaurant on site allowed for after hours drink when kids went to bed. Breakfast was a little lackluster but no complaints otherwise. The hotel was a little dated but we had no problems.
- Simon (10/5): - Lovely and clean nice breakfast
- orourke (8/5): -
- SueH (10/5): -
- steers (10/5): - Lovely atmosphere, great impact on arrival. We attended when it was quieter however this did not detract. It was close to our visit itinerary of the Glenmorangue Distillery so very local and convenient. Nothing to see here!
- Fraser (8/5): Comfortable stay, relaxing and fantastic staff. - Charming and the staff were excellent. Very close to the centre of Tain. NA
- Zimmermann (9/5): -
- Colin (10/5): -
- kevin (9/5): -
- Cindy (8/5): - We were transferred to Morangie Hotel. It was comfortable, warm and staff were lovely. No so much didn’t like, but a bit off putting on arrival. The signage looked cheap and nasty and the broken fence could have at least been cleared away if not mended.
- Ana Isabel (7/5): Good and bad things - It was picturesque. The bedrooms were spacious and clean. The ensuite bathroom was big and comfortable. I think the price was a bit too much for the actual value of the room, obviously you are paying for the photo on arrival. Then we had to cross a very long and intricate corridor to get to our bedroom and then it was obvious that it was the extension building. That would have been perfectly ok, however, the space was not as well heated up and cosy as the main building. Also, when we ordered some drinks from the bar and they were off, and the bar person was not around to deal with this, I went to the receptionist to ask about a solution and the receptionist completely shook off any responsibility saying she didn't deal with the bar. However shortly afterwards she did go to the bar and served a couple new customers. That left us with a bad impression. Finally the bar person gave us a different drink to make up for the ones that were off, but at this point, the bad impression was already made.
- Aakash (8/5): -
- Mark (10/5): -
- Shona (10/5): Lovely hotel full of character. - Bedroom Noisy bar music played in the dining room was out of place.
