Guest Reviews
- Jos (6/5): Mooie locatie, kamers zijn minder - Het restaurant Alhoewel een mooie locatie hadden we uitzicht op parkeerplaats. We moesten vragen voor dagelijkse service van de kamer
- Sue, Lady (7/5): Shetland isn’t a cheap place & a single room is £200. I expected more. - Very nice staff. Plenty of parking. Clean. Everything worked in room. Quiet. Dated decor & the smell of plug in air freshener. Expensive!
- Kir Moar (7/5): -
- William (9/5): -
- Ronny Olav (6/5): - god armosfære , mat og betjening. Veldig slitte rom , dusj med dårlig trykk. Generellt så skriker hotellet etter opp pussing,
- Guest (7/5): -
- David (9/5): A grand spot to eat, drink and sleep - Location overlooking the sea - beautiful outlook on a sunny day. The brasserie food is very good, Rather expensive
- Vesa (7/5): Työmatka - Upeat maisemat hotellin ravintolasta merelle Suihku. Vedenpaine alhainen.

- Karrst (8/5): Great breakfast, with a sea view - Our first morning on Shetland was to have been a stroll to St Ninian's Isle, but a heavy rain shower put pay to it. We now need a warm coffee and get out of the rain, so headed back to Lerwick.
The Lerwick Hotel was the first place we saw and decided to stop to see if a coffee was available.
What a present surprise, even though we were not staying there we had a warm welcome and asked about coffee. They were still serving breakfast and we were offered that option, after such a welcome who could resist.
We were shown a table near the window in what is a modern dining room. There are some scenic views over the bay, shame about the rain. On a sunny day there would be some great sights.
Our waiter was really friendly and gave us the different options for breakfast. Cold, wet and hungry the full Scottish was the answer. Just delicious, eggs done to perfection and great crispy bacon, one couldn't ask for more.
There were also juices and a great selection of fruit, yoghurt, croissants, pastries, selection of cold meats and cheeses.
The cappuccinos were awesome as well.
Fully sated we were ready for what ever Shetland was to throw at us.
This is definitely a good hotel, friendly staff and modern and well worth an option if you want to stay in Lerwick.
- Fraser (7/5): - The rooms need updated
- Arthur (8/5): Enjoyable - Location is perfect by the sea
Staff were excellent
- Matthew (1/5): -
- 117junek (10/5): Lerwick hotel - Very friendly and helpful staff. We had early access to our room which was wonderful after the ferry crossing from Aberdeen. Room was spotlessly clean and comfortable. Hester in our room meant we could adjust it to suit ourselves. There are a few options for room service that you choose. Meals were excellent. Felt very well looked after. We requested a room with a sea view and that was lovely. Very quiet hotel so we slept well
- Dieter (8/5): -
- Sheena (8/5): - All was good in bedroom and bedroom
Staff seemed helpful
Dining room comfortable with a great view Big hotel and seemed a bit impersonal
- Aaron (10/5): -
- Catherine (10/5): Great stay - Great hotel
- Traveding (6/5): Not much choice of hotels in Lerwick. - Unfortunately, there are only a couple of hotels to choose from in Lerwick, and I was told that the Lerwick Hotel was the best option.
The rooms, and the hotel in general, are very much in need of updating. The wallpaper was peeling, and the bed was not very comfortable.
That said, the hotel restaurant was very good, and I enjoyed my meals there.
- Roberta (7/5): Pleasant but not very comfortable. Good if old decor and lack of modern amenities don’t bother you. - Pros: location, cleanliness, excellent restaurant, courtesy of staff, wonderful deep bathtub, very good breakfast buffet Cons: teeny tiny rooms, terrible beds with springs poking through, overall dated decor and “run down” vibe, no elevator, no fridge or microwave in room, no soda machine, no ice machine , very squeaky floors overhead
- Ainslie (10/5): Great location, facilities, staff and food! - Location & view was great! Restaurant food was amazing (Dinner & Breakfast 5 stars) recommend the balmoral beef & haggis! Room was a great size with a big bathroom with a bath. Staff are lovely, 5 stars for them! Will certainly stay here again!
- Susan (7/5): -
- Suzanne (10/5): - Breakfast was fine.
- Z7441VGsueh (8/5): LEWICK HOTEL SHETLAND ISLES - After reading some very mixed reviews, I asked Ramblers and the hotel to place me in a clean quiet hygienic room
This was done. Odd that ho7srkeeping had to be requested but that worked ok.
Htl overall badly needs repainting and renovations but my stay was very good. Staff were brilliant! Friendly and very helpful.
- Julia Frances (10/5): - The hotel was close to a bus stop which for me was great as I don't drive. It was about a 15 minute walk from the centre of Lerwick and it involved walking up a few hills but it was possible to get a bus from the hotel.
The hotel its self was clean and comfortable. I ate at the hotel every evening of my stay as there was no nearby restaurants. The food was very nice but very expensive
I would recommend getting a bus to and from the airport as its so much cheaper than the taxis, which were expensive and you can catch a bus from down the road
I would recommend this hotel to anyone planning a short stay on the island
- Alister (8/5): - All staff were friendly and very helpful. Substantial breakfast. Lunches were delicious.
- Kim (7/5): - Very friendly helpful staff Rooms while comfortable enough but are tired
- Claire (9/5): Beautiful - The hotel is lovely, with friendly helpful staff and a great restaurant The room was a touch small, but had a sea view that more than made up for it.
- Robert (10/5): The room was clean, food good and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. - Great location. There was nothing to not like.
- crs1026 (8/5): Very pleasant stay, a bit short on ambience - This is one of the larger hotels in Shetland. Nice location, easy access by road from the airport. Reasonable walking distance to the center of town, and lots of access to walks on the shoreline. A large Tesco within easy walking distance.
Nicely situated on a gorgeous rocky shoreline, but the lovely scenery is wasted as the building architecture is uninspired, with fairly small windows (may not be an issue in bad weather, as the windows are fogged by seaspray.). Be sure to ask for a room facing the water as the other side of the hotel faces a bland parking lot.
Oddly, the property has not improved its view of the bay with a deck or benches - no place to sit and enjoy outdoors - again, maybe weather just won't allow. Even a better path to the shoreline trail would make things feel a little richer. We wondered if the building had been built as a dorm or business residence and later converted to a hotel.
Rooms are smallish and in an older style with dark wood that makes the rooms feel a little smaller. Everything was very clean and well maintained, but the decor is a bit dated. Beds were on the small size.
We lucked out and stayed in a larger room at the very end of the building wing - it had a larger window and a little more room. The bathroom had been remodelled and was very fresh and modern - so no complaints, other than needing to air the room a little when the wind died down.
Staff were very pleasant and responsive. Meals were excellent - good breakfast (included, but not advertised as such) and really great dinner in the dining room.
Overall I would rate this as a "good" but not "great" hotel. A lot of opportunity to enhance the property with. little imagination and some further redecorating. Would not be reluctant to stay here again... but might look for a guest house with a little more ambience.
- Nicholas (3/5): - We did get a partial refund when asked. For £200 a night it was very poor. If we had paid £75 it would be acceptable.
- Rick (8/5): - Extremely friendly, helpful staff and exceptionally good food, both at dinner and at breakfast.
- Alistair (8/5): - Overall it was very good. Staff were very nice, perhaps lacking in local knowledge. The mattress was not to my liking, to soft. The shower was a little underwhelming. Food was excellent.
- BÉAL (7/5): - c'est cher pour ce que c'est
la chambre est un peu petite pour le prix
- Ian (10/5): - W

- William (5/5): Wouldn’t recommend room 242 in the Lerwick Hotel - Good location, excellent meal in the restaurant and helpful and friendly staff Our room (242) was distinctly tired and in some parts dirty. A light was hanging from the ceiling in the bathroom and the pedal of the bin in the bathroom was filthy. The curtains were in part hanging off the rail.
Having had a look in other rooms on our way to reception we got the distinct impression we’d been given an inferior room. One of the mattresses had to be changed as it was worn out (which was done on the day we complained) and all in all we thought the room way overpriced.
- Leann (8/5): - Place was a bit outdated, in need of an over haul. Looks like the bathrooms have already been done.
Staff was wonderful.
Restaurant was spectacular, I had 3 dinners there and I am still talking about how good the food was.
I would stay here again.
- SUSAN (10/5): I would stay here again - I had a nice experience with no problems at all
- Relax66148502493 (6/5): Meal was soured - Took my Girlfriend for a meal recently, and was allocated an 8.30pm slot despite the place being fairly deserted when we arrived early at 8.10pm on the off chance they’d take us early which they did.
Upon ordering drinks & our food as we were just finishing our starter (about 8.50pm) my mobile starts ringing, who’s phoning me in the middle of my date you ask? Yes it’s the Lerwick Hotel, asking why I haven’t turned up for my 8.30 booking, and this is me sitting in their dining room! The incompetence is staggering and ruined the whole vibe of our date. Needless to say a half hearted apology and some waffle about a table booked for someone else didn’t cut mustard, and we never even got as much as a complimentary drink for the embarrassment as I told the server that I was just that.
The food was ok, nothing tremendous I might add, but would I go back, not sure I would. Also to end things off the lad taking our payment couldn’t work out the half of £64.50, I rest my case…generally very disappointing experience.
- 123colin (10/5): Excellent location - We stayed at the Lerwick hotel on a bed and breakfast basis but there is a lovely restaurant inside the hotel as well. As we liked to make the most of our stay chose to eat out. Our room was excellent with wonderful views of the bay and the Knab. Its about 10/15min walk into Lerwick or take a longer more scenic walk around the coast and Knab back to the hotel. We had wonderful breakfasts, the staff excellent and very friendly especially the reception. Always plenty of replacement coffee and biscuits available. The local bus stop just outside the hotel especially if you want to get back to the airport at very competitive prices. There is also local supermarket just down the road. We really can recommend this hotel
- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely quiet part of Lerwick close to waters edge yet next to airport bus stop and short walk from harbour. Very relaxing with helpful staff Misty weather.
- Maria (8/5): Nice and confortable with a great view. - The view from the hotel restaurant is excellent. The heatinfg system was a bit outdated.
- Susan (6/5): Good location, lovely evening dining - Fabulous dinner, lovely seat by window with seaview. Food impressive.
Very responsive to concerns about allocated room. Room very cramped, tiny window, needed cleaning and some maintenance. Bit disappointing considering cost of 2 night stay
- mandysR7788XN (10/5): Outstanding - Booked a table for our anniversary, even though we don’t stay in the hotel. And all I can say is what an amazing meal, staff amazing and the hotel has such an amazing relaxed feel to it. Would highly recommend the hotel for meal
- marjoriew503 (8/5): Enjoyable stay - We stayed at this very convenient hotel when touring the islands. Our room was comfortable enough for our stay.
The food was of a good standard, particularly the breakfasts and the staff were friendly and helpful.
- Jonathan (9/5): Superb -
- Cornelius (9/5): Superb -
- Trevor (9/5): Will use again as know what I am getting at a fair price - Been before, bit dated in some areas but all clean and tidy, staff excellent, food very good well cooked and presented by staff. Bedroom large, bathroom good and modern, great shower/bath Only thing didn’t like think my room was about as far as you could get from reception bar etc. However got my steps up!!
- Brenda (8/5): Comfortable stay, quiet rooms with seaview and window can open. Staff were nice. - Location is great, parking is easy.
Restaurant and bar very nice. Rooms abit small.
Bathroom very small and shower had bad water pressure.
In room phone not connected.
- Richard (8/5): Very good -
- A8839XJsandyw (4/5): Bad review - During my 3 night stay there wasn’t once a cleaner or maid in the room so the bed wasn’t made, no fresh sheets were put on, the bins weren’t emptied, there was no fresh towels for the room. Also the tea and coffee wasn’t replenished for duration of my stay. Very poor
- David (6/5): Comfortable - Location was great the suite was good for a long stay. Reception staff were very helpful. Shower walls could have been cleaner, the wash hand basis plug was a pain to drain. Breakfast selection was poor and so was breakfast service.
- Jane (7/5): Great location, good & staff but very dated - Location and food Very dated
- Susan (7/5): Good -
- 55derekm (2/5): Total nightmare - The walls and roof are paper thin, with guy upstairs stomping about every night and also waking me up at 5.45am every day on the phone. Then the cleaners slamming doors every 60sec during the day so no rest then either, and that is not an exaggeration! EVERY 60 SECONDS.
Breakfast was either extremely overcooked or undercooked. Restaurant staff are not trained well and nervous, hovering over you as you eat or on there phones. All the staff are 'from other parts of the world' that sort of explains the state of the place. Imagine a Scottish hotel in Bangkok and your halfway there.
I will be staying in an apartment next time I visit for work, never subjecting myself to that nightmare again.
- Graham (10/5): - It was very nice and clean, lovely staff ,but there could have been a bit of improvement in the food
- Lara (5/5): Gread T - Great location Old and dusty bedroom. Poor quality food. Staff look bored.
- milkshaketaster (6/5): Local clients - Food was ok, pork medallions not medallions and overdone, tough in places. Chefs veg watery and a heap of red cabbage which was already on the plate.
Dining room has great views but all public areas looking tired and dated, hasn't had a face lift in over 20 years so sadly overdue.
If your looking for great food it's a no
If you just want a unexceptional meal it's ok.
- Gordon (3/5): Expensive, Noisy and poor quality heating and a smell in the corridor that they tried to cover ip with air fresheners - The smell and poor heating
- Blair (6/5): Basic, only just acceptable for a workman’s stay, wouldn’t want to pay out of my own pocket to stay here. - Location, parking. Rooms very dated. Shower was awful, very poor water pressure and hot water would take the skin off your back.
Strange smell as you enter into the hallway of the rooms from the reception area.
- James (7/5): A nice hotel in a great location. - Food and drink selection is very good and the staff are helpful and friendly. Bed and shower not great, but did a job.
- Shantini (2/5): Disappointing - We were given a room which was very small, cold and had damp. The wallpaper was coming off the walls and the heater was under neath a window with curtains coming down, I was concerned it would be a fire hazard. The room was dark and required significant refurbishment and was certainly not worth the price that we paid for it. We made our concerns known to reception and they showed us three other rooms but all were just as bad. We did swap for a room which was a little warmer, but the bathroom window was a state with paint peeing off and what looked like mold, and a patched up hole in the floor of the bath tub. Overall it was a very disappointing stay.
- Marion (10/5): Excellent short break - Very close to my family. Very friendly helpful staff Nothing!
- fi_abz (8/5): Lovely central hotel - Lovely hotel about 10min walk from the centre of Lerwick, plenty parking. Hotel was slightly dated in parts, seems like it's in the midst of being updated, the dining room was lovely, and the bathroom in our room looked like it had recently been renovated - great shower. Room itself was large and had everything we needed but was a little old fashioned. Staff were super helpful and the food was excellent (we stayed on a DBB basis). Overall a great stay.
- Rick (8/5): Another positive stay - We have stayed several times, and although the rooms are in need of some modernisation, the staff and the food are exceptional.
Breakfast is freshly cooked to order, and the evening meal service is exceptional … there really is no reason to dine anywhere else!
- Gordon (10/5): Great - Breakfast, Location, view, staff, Heated towels, Room service Shower access hard to get into (no hold bars) and operate the flow and the temperature control.
Door key hard to lock and unlock.
Towel rack heater too close to toilet causing burn when touched if not covered by a towel.
Dinner meal having limited selections that did not change during week.
- Kimberly (9/5): I'll be back. - view, location, staff were beyond excellent beds were outdated and terribly uncomfortable
- Elizabeth (10/5): - The staff was terrific, I think the location was pretty good, not much to choose from on the island so I would rate it high.
- Sarah (8/5): Very good -
- Lynda (8/5): Very good -
- Christine (4/5): Very expensive hotel which did not give value for money but the staff were great. - Lovely view from the bedroom and breakfast room. The staff were very helpful. Room was small, very tired and dated.
- Duncan (7/5): Clean room , quiet location , good breakfast . - A clean room with a nice view and quiet.
The location was an easy walk into Lerwick with ample parking lack of electrical sockets to charge up devices - phone , camera and ipad.
Also on checkout , I was expecting to be asked how my stay was but no conversation at all really . Just presented with bill . No issues but , personal touch would have rounded off the stay nicely.
- B7012IGab (2/5): BEWARE! - Dirty, damp and not fit for purpose. The walls in the corridors and room were wet with penetrating damp. Peeling wallpapers, shoddy ripped furnishings, ancient beds, flaking paint. Dirty carpets and restaurant stained seats and dirty blinds. I think this place would make you ill if you stayed for any length of time. Oh, I could go on but do yourself a favour and don’t go. Awful and embarrassing for any tourists visiting Shetland- what a dreadful impression!
- Pauline (8/5): A very comfortable stay in great location with excellent staff and food. - Location and staff were very good. Ate in the restaurant too for lunch and evening meal. Very high quality and delicious. Can’t think of any dislikes.
- Archie (7/5): Good - Staff are very nice. Place is very clean. Had a good meal. Good internet for streaming to TV. Shower was pathetic; more of a dribble than a shower.
I’m 6’ and the single bed was far too short, as was the duvet.
- mariacC4852KM (4/5): Family meal - Went there for a family meal. Both me and my partner had the duck. Presentation was spot on, no taste, duck was so hard I couldn't even cut it properly ended up giving it to my partner who also stated it was very tough. Had the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream again cutting through a pudding was hard, and the most tiny bit of ice cream you could imagine. Never go there again 174 pounds for family of 4 adults 3 children
- Stephen (5/5): Passable -
- Martin (9/5): Superb -
- Alan (7/5): Good -
- Andrew (8/5): - Done
- Helen (8/5): - x
- Assad (6/5): Poor value for money - Hotel needs a complete overhaul very poor beds and pillows gave me backache
Breakfast food and service needs and overhaul too
- Ingrid (10/5): We will be coming back to this hotel. - We had just come off the ferry from Aberdeen and was able to get into our room earlier than expected and the room was amazing with great views and the staff were lovely!
The food was good and we had a pleasant stay before moving on to Fetlar. nothing
- Broon30 (10/5): Great stay in LH - Not sure about some of these reviews, the hotel is reasonably priced as hotels go these days.
I’ve just had a fabulous meal in the restaurant, reception, bar and restaurant staff have been pleasant and attentive and actually smiling unlike my stay in the Scalloway hotel the previous night. Room 209 is absolutely fine and meets my needs (these comments about “dated” rooms crack me up, people want pristine brand new for every stay now 🙄)
The view from my room is lovely, the location is great and I’ll definitely be back again next time I visit Shetland.
- Ruth (6/5): - The location of the hotel is great, overlooking a bay on the edge of Lerwick, but as a single traveller my view was of the car park. Despite lawns down to the shore, there is no outside space to sit, and the building's style is quite outdated and bare. I only ate in the restaurant once - it is clearly popular and the food was good. Quite a walk into town, but there are passing buses.
- Veneto55 (8/5): Walking week with a group - The hotel is in an excellent position and has very good views of the bay. It is only a short walk to the town centre and Tesco is very near by if you need supplies. The staff are very obliging and friendly and will go out of their way to help wherever they can. The food in the evening and at breakfast is very good and the only downside to the hotel is the bedrooms need refurbishing but apparently that will be happening shortly.
- Glen (9/5): Enjoyable, Peaceful stay. - Really clean, staff really friendly and checked me in soon as I got off the ferry. Breakfast was really good. Price was high for the target audience hotel is aimed at.
- Susan (8/5): Very good -
- Pauline (8/5): Lovely hotel surprisingly nice location and lovely ba, restaurant and dining areas. - Breakfast Good
View Good - unfortunately the weather wasnt!
Room good on the whole but we noticed a few things - the radiator was positioned too near the toilet. Whilst the radiator was good for keeping the towels warm I was bothered about sitting on the loo without burning myself! Think the format for the bathroom was badly thought out!
- Anne (2/5): Extremely poor, over priced. Badly in need of investment. - The staff were friendly and helpful This hotel is in desperate need of a refresh. The entrance lobby is pleasant and welcoming, but the rooms are dank and dated. The smell of damp is strong, the decor is old, and the mattress is ten years past needing replaced. It sank in the middle and was extremely uncomfortable. The restaurant has grand aims, but the food did not live up to it. Vegetarians/Vegans - prepare to be disappointed. Pescatarians - they will find a way of adding meat to even the simplest fish dish. Breakfast? Straight out the 1990's.
- Ian (7/5): Good & not so good points - Good location scenic views to rear, close to large supermarket for convenience & fairly short walk to Lerwick harbour & Esplanade Rooms dated, small bathroom & expensive cost wise
- 672iank (6/5): Mixed Feelings - Stunning Location - Mixed feelings about this review as some issues were excellent others not so.
Firstly it's hard not to escape cost of hotel accommodation in Lerwick & it's right to expect high standards.
I arrived at the hotel off the morning Northlink Ferry which after a 25/30 minute walk meant I arrived well before check in time. Fully expected my bag to be stored, however receptionist couldn't have been more helpful & informed me my room was ready which I really appreciated.
Location of the hotel just off South Road was ideal for my purposes with a large supermarket barely 10mins walk, close to a well defined coastal walk round The Knab or a 15-20 mins walk to Lerwick Harbour/Port. View at the back of the hotel is stunning.
My room seemed a little dated with some of the furniture scratched & as I later discovered a very small bathroom with very weak shower. TV seemed to reboot itself every so often but otherwise ok
Had an evening meal in the Bay Brasserie which was excellent. Quality of pate for starter & haddock for main course was very good. All in all excellent evening meal. Breakfasts in the hotel were decent & during my stay had cereals, hot food & kipper which to be honest was just ok.
All the staff I met were friendly & helpful & overall enjoyed my stay but just expected more for the cost
- Dawn (8/5): Spectacular views, lovely staff but rooms could do with an update. - Beautiful views from the room and restaurant. Fairly handy for most of Lerwicks amenities. Decor a little worn and dated. Only one bath towel in the room, however plenty more available on request.
- Catherine (7/5): Good -
- Doreen (6/5): Poor run down hotel but staff excellent - Very dated hotel- needs a lot of TLC, tubs on floor to capture water leaks from several days ago. Squashed bathroom and toilet liable to blocking. Mattress so uncomfortable
- Wygram (8/5): A great stay in Lerwick - We stayed for 3 days. The views are stunning. We stayed in a room with a 4 poster bed.
The room was clean and comfortable. The ensuite was a good size. The hotel is an easy walk t the centre of Lerwick. It is very close to several tourist spots.
The staff are wonderful. They are all very helpful.
We enjoyed our stay here.
- Julia (9/5): Superb -
- howardj968 (6/5): Pleasant enough , adequate, but let down by attention to detail, - Whilst the staff could not be faulted, my room 232 , was small with a tight small ensuite, the shower compartment had discoloured/grouting/mould growth also around the waste outlet and the extractor vent was coated with fine fluff/dust suggesting it had not been cleaned in a while, the central light fitting had flies/other debris visible in it, in need of a clean. The dinner menu did not change for the entire fortnight we were there which was also a lilt disappointing. Also as an EV driver, assured by the Tourist board that charging on Shetland would not be a problem to find that this large centrally situated main hotel with a large car park did not have even one destination charger on site was also disappointing. The nearest(very slow) chargers in the Heath centre were mostly occupied by NHS staff vehicles, so not available. Reliance had to be placed on the handful of rapid chargers in Lerwick and wider afield.
- Karen (8/5): Good for an overnight stay but over priced for facilities. - Location. Able to leave luggage. A bit over priced for what it was. Bar tables needed cleaning.
