Guest Reviews
- Steve (8/5): -
- Winter (4/5): In desperate need of referbishment and a deep clean - The staff were friendly helpful and welcoming. The location was great it is right on the high street, so very easy access to all the amenities. However you have to accept that with a central location does come some noise from the street. The breakfast was good, I cant comment on the restaurant as it was not open during our stay, but there were plenty of other alternative in walking distance. The rooms are tiered and in desperate need of refurbishing. The carpets and chairs are dirty and stained. The bath was chipped and had a hole in one place. The towels and bed linen are clean. However, the towels are not replaced and there is nowhere to dry them so after the first day you are using damp towels. Our room was also not cleaned on one day. It is poor value for money. It was not worth the rate they are charging for their rooms.
- Derek (9/5): Enjoyable stay and would definitely stay again. - Very central. It was clean and the bed was comfortable. I felt the room was a little small.
- Patricia (10/5): Great place, central location. Good breakfast - Great place. It was all good.
- Margaret (6/5): - The staff were very friendly and helpful and the evening meal in the Regency 59 restaurant was excellent. The room was quite small and the pillows amd matress were rather uncomfortable.
- BRIGID (5/5): - The location is great. Value for money. Why is breakfast bo longer included in the price of the room in hotels today?
I ordered a tea, in the morning, in the dining room, was charged £2.50!
What you can't spare a cup of tea for a resident.
£12.00 for breakfast. Wow!!
How can places charge such ridiculous prices, for somewhere really not that fancy.
- janisl804 (4/5): Disappointed. - Our room was on the second floor with no lift. My husband is mildly disabled with Parkinsons Disease The room was so tiny.. The shower room was also tiny and again access was hazardous for my husband. Whilst I appreciate we should have enquired at time of booking, it would have been helpful if somewhere in the description of the facilities it could have been pointed that it was unsuitable for the disabled. Having said all that, the staff were very friendly and pleasant, and breakfast was enormous.
- Neil (8/5): Reasonable hotel but noisy - Central location
Comfortable room and helpful staff Noisy from street outside night and morning

- N7612JMjenniferl (4/5): Disappointing! - Unfortunately, our stay at The King’s Head Hotel was not worth the money, despite its prime town‑centre location.
Check‑in took place at the restaurant entrance during a very busy lunch service, which immediately felt awkward and unprofessional. We had to wheel our suitcase in and out between diners, which was uncomfortable and not what you would expect from a hotel charging premium rates.
We were allocated Room 12 on the top floor. The room had very dated décor and, initially, staff were unable to locate our booking. This led us to feel that the room was a last‑minute or spare allocation rather than prepared accommodation. The condition of the room reinforced this impression. There were several worn and broken elements: cable trunking was split, woodwork was flaky and damaged, and the overall finish was poor. The room felt more like former staff quarters than a guest room. There was no headboard on the bed, further adding to the unfinished and neglected feel.
Online photos were nowhere near a true reflection of the poor quality and condition of the room.
It was a very hot day, so we needed to keep the window open. While we expected street noise due to the location, the window design created a significant safety issue. The window was large, opened inwards, and stretched over the pillow end of the bed. With the window open, there was a real risk of banging your head during the night. There was no hook or mechanism to keep it safely ajar, so it swung shut repeatedly overnight.
The ensuite was extremely small, old fashioned, and impractical. It had a cheap‑looking MDF sliding door and was so cramped that we chose not to shower in the morning. We were keen to leave as early as possible.
Breakfast was acceptable, although we were seated opposite a couple who spent the entire meal FaceTiming family on a laptop, which made the experience uncomfortable. The lady serving breakfast was pleasant and professional, but the absence of any visible management was noticeable. It felt as though management presence was deliberately avoided, perhaps to avoid being asked “How was your stay?”
Had the stay not been prepaid, we would have seriously questioned paying in full for what was an overpriced, budget‑feeling experience. In general, we expect a four‑star hotel to provide a level of comfort that outweighs being at home. Sadly, this felt more like a two‑star experience. We could not wait to get home to some very simple comforts.
- Billie (8/5): Convenient hotel - Right in the centre of Abergavenny town and close to amenities.
Friendly staff
Choice of cooked breakfast options Hotel starting to feel tired.
Very small shower cubicles.
- Alan (6/5): Very pleasant breakfast. A very very tired hotel. - Very nice breakfast. Hot shower Ground floor reception bar and restaurant had a very spicy smell. The bed head was below the window probably due to the slope of the floor. The shower ev en-suite was very poor like it had been bodged up in the 70s and not touched since. The stair tread levels were uneven making them potentially dangerous.
- Elizabeth (8/5): A comfortable stay in a central location - The location on the high street was excellent
- David (7/5): We’re on motorbikes and we’re given parking next to the beer garden rather than leaving them on the road outside, gates - Good location, friendly staff, value for money
- Barbara (5/5): I had very good breakfasts - vegetarian! Also had an evening meal which was good! My single room was okay! - Near to Bus Station and Morrison’s! There was not a Hairdryer in my bedroom!
I had to borrow one from my family!
- Gareth (10/5): - Helpful staff
- JW (10/5): -
- Kevin (9/5): Very Good definately book again Excellent breakfast - Lovely period old fashioned Hotel
- Anthony (8/5): -
- balman (9/5): -
- Susan (7/5): I have stayed twice here and the location is the best part. Food is awesome, Just need a ceiling fan - Food is excellent - restaurant on the premises
Room was a bit stuffy as no fans/aircon
Location was excellent - right in the middle of town Room was ok, but just a bit stuffy, so had to open window, then you heard all the music and bar noice
- Jonas (10/5): - Lovely staff and great location in the center. Got a big comfortable room.
- Lara (7/5): Overall, a good value, clean and simple, pub noise not terribly loud and usually over by midnight. - Traditional pub/hotel, very charming. Excellent breakfast, helpful and friendly staff, best Indian restaurant in town right next door to pub. Good location, central to all amenities in town. Nice beer garden in back. Floor slanted, to be expected given type of building, but uncomfortable to sit at desk in room to work, room chair height didn’t work with this setup. Could work at table in back garden, though, which was nice in good weather.
- Cathy (5/5): Unhappy with the room but the staff and breakfast were good - Staff very helpful and friendly. Breakfast excellent Room, curtains were ripped and falling down the light from the high street was very bright, blackout curtains would improve this.
As its an old building we weren't surprised that the floors weren't level however I would expect the furniture to be level, I was constantly sliding down to the bottom of the single bed I slept in.
Ceiling dusty over the radiator.
- philip (9/5): Welcomed by friendly staff and made to feel welcome even though it was a busy saturday afternoon. - Friendly staff and a proper old fashioned bar and a nice modern restaurant. The parking.
- Ian (8/5): Spectacular value for money. - Perfect location in the town centre. Good cooked breakfast in clean and pleasant breakfast room. Much better than one would expect for the price which is very affordable and far less than the others in the town. Room made up every day. Comfortable beds. Rooms are above an authentic, unmodernised pub. Wifi is a bit slow and occasionally not working. Hot water pressure slightly low but adequate. All this is in the context of a very old building that has been refurbished over the centuries without being modernized. Some furnishings were clean but tired. This will not appeal to lovers of perfectly curated boutique hotels.
- clare (9/5): Comfortable, heat warming - Thoughtfulness, amenities, generous breakfast- a place that wants to please. Perfect
- Neil (7/5): -
- mark (7/5): - Staff were marvellous, bar was lovely Instant coffee at breakfast, dead plants on landing
- Mike Davies (7/5): Apart from falling over and worrying about fire alarm ok but overpricef - Breakfast was great Smoke alarm in room filthy dirty and not working,i bet it has not been looked at checked in yrs, long co axial cable right across window room 10.
Very uneven floor i fell over twice and i understand it,s 300yrs old but floor could be levelled, over priced room really should be around £60
- gregwO5964DY (10/5): Stayed here for the night for a wedding, wonderful staff! So accommodating! - The staff here are amazing! we stayed at this hotel for one night while attending a wedding at nearby sant ffraed house and can just say the service we received was amazing, it had only dawned on me the day before that the wedding started at 12:30 and check in was at 2:00 so I called up and spoke to Raj, he was brilliant. he sorted it out so that our room was ready for 12:00, he recommended me a local taxi service to ferry us to the venue and when we arrived at the hotel (running late as it was) the staff there were great the young lady who dealt with us checked straight in and handed my room keys within a few minutes. The rooms are clean the bed was comfy and the shower was nice and spacious the location for Abergavenny town is also excellent. Would recommend to anyone.
- Howard (7/5): -
- Allison (5/5): -
- Haydn (6/5): -
- Ann (9/5): -
- Anne (8/5): - Clean, comfortable room. Good choice and enjoyable breakfast. Our room was at the back of the hotel, so it was quiet even though the bar was busy.
- Vicky (8/5): -
- Guest (7/5): -
- Ronald (8/5): Excellent value for short stay - Breakfast was excellent and staff very attentive
- Alun (10/5): - Comfy bed nice location
- William (8/5): Good value - Nice town hotel comfortable and clean with nice staff Location
- Georgina (8/5): - Position A few little issues: no way to lock door from inside, bathroom mirror light not working
- DOROTHY (9/5): - This was a single room but was spacious with a good sized single bed Thanks The room was right at the back of the hotel (as single ones often are!) and unfortunately it was very noisy both in the evening and in the morning (early!)
- Paula (5/5): Wouldnt stay here again - The location was near to the wedding i attended The room was not very clean. Bedside lamp broken, looked awful.
Window didnt close properly , which let in sound.
Water cold in shower. This was room no. 2
- Helen (10/5): - Friendly welcome, excellent nepalese meal. Good breakfast. Good service throughout.
- Richard (9/5): Great location lovely clean hotel cracking breakfast - Very central and great breakfast Tv obstructed which when mentioned they were aware of
- Pamela (8/5): Great little hotel and close to all you need - Very central. Helpful staff. Clean and tidy. Very good value for money Double bed was just too small for us, but that can’t be helped.
- Terry (7/5): -
- Parker (7/5): - How helpful the staff were. A man called Jay was very good and happy to help. Also so central and convenient to Borough Theatre. bedroom quite cold and shower room too. Too many stairs to climb with a hip injury
- Madden (6/5): The bedroom needs attention - The staff were very helpful and made one feel very welcome. My curtains were falling apart.
The towel rail in the bathroom was far too high. The shower cubicle was tiny and the shower head the water just trickled out.
- Wilkins (8/5): Good breakfast in a good hotel in a central location. - Room was good plenty of room.
Breakfast was good.
Staff friendly. Bathroom needed a bit of an upgrade especially the shower which should be a thermostatically controlled tap but was not.
- Rakaan (7/5): Comfortable enough - Very friendly staff, quick check in process. Room was very clean. Music from the pub continued until 11pm and easily heard in the room. Room was a little dated.
- Michael (8/5): -
- Paul (7/5): - Good location plenty of car parks nearby that were not expensive. Room was OK but a tad small and in need of a refurbishment. Bed a little small for us but ok.
- Troakes (10/5): Will definitely stay again. - Very professional staff and a fantastic setting. N/A
- Marti (8/5): -
- Julie (9/5): -
- Jeffrey (8/5): - Location Some bar noise
- Lewis (10/5): Excellent value for money, all staff are a credit to the hotel! - Ideal location, we were attending a wedding at Sant Ffraed House N/A
- Nick (10/5): -
- clive (8/5): - Excellent breakfast and a great location Rooms a bit basic
- Andrew (5/5): Ok - Location Average to low room quality
- emma (9/5): - The room was lovely and clean and the breakfast was amazing, all staff were friendly and helpful The one lamp did flicker if you touched the wire code, might want to get that sorted
- ALISON (8/5): I will definitely be back to test out the evening menu - Hotel was perfect location to go to Borough Theatre. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was delicious Room did feel cold during night
- Lance (8/5): - Why? Why?
- Steve (1/5): - Location The noise and room was above a bar so I left without stopping
- Mikaela (9/5): -
- Geraint (9/5): Nice room in comfy hotel. - We have stayed here a few time before so knew what to expect. It's a very old building, so the floors and steps up to them are a bit uneven, but that's no big issue. One or two of the rooms are a bit tired or have chips in sinks or could do with a lick of paint, However, on the whole, it is a warm and comfy place to stay, with lovely staff and an excellent breakfast in the morning. The location couldn't be better.
- Tracy (8/5): -
- Jason (8/5): Enjoyable stay clean room fabulous food would return - The noise in the bar until 12am
- john (10/5): - staff very helpful
- Louisa (9/5): - The staff were fabulous! Very helpful and kind! Rooms were basic but clean and had everything we needed! Restaurant does excellent food..breakfast had a great choice too!.. right in the town for everything like food, shops even the castle. I did say the radiator didn't work in our bathroom but nobody came to sort the problem. We were leaving the next day so no big issue.
- Emma (8/5): -
- Evans (8/5): Enjoyed - I does what it says on the tin
- John (7/5): -
- Karen (8/5): - Staff were friendly, good location, breakfast was good. The room was dated, small shower, hot water tap didn't stop running and the room was cold radiator like warm
- Cathy (7/5): -
- Beverly (10/5): Delightful hotel, warm and welcoming staff with delicious food - what's not to like! - The staff were extremely welcoming. The hotel was quaint and quirky being 15th century. There was a cosy fire in the bar which we enjoyed whilst having pre-dinner drinks. Our room was extremely comfortable and had everything we needed. We ate at the hotels Nepalese Regency 59 restaurant and the food was fantastic. Sadly because we had eaten so much we could not do the following mornings breakfast justice! What we did manage was delicious. It was perfectly placed to explore Abergavenny Town and we will definitely be back. Absolutely nothing would highly recommend and we will return
- Chris (9/5): -
- Ibrahim (6/5): Because it was the weekend The pub downstairs was very noisy with live music.I’m guessing if it was week days it would b - it’s a very old property and my room was not level it felt like I was in a boat The staff were very nice and friendly
- Jordan (8/5): -
- Adrian (6/5): Convenient, price matched the service, Pub/Bar pleasantly down to earth. - The bar in the hotel was a real local’s bar and had real atmosphere and the ale was very good, the bar staff very helpful and friendly, like proper bar staff. It says 4 start hotel and seemed very cheap for a 4 star hotel, it didn’t quite match expectations, but was fair value for money. I could not see/find where to the Wi-Fi. There were plants in the corridors that needed a lot more care and attention!
- Darran (6/5): -
- Robert (10/5): Friendship - All of it N/A
- Delyth (6/5): The staff were very nice and obliging. - There were large windows in the room which we could open and keep the room cool. 3 The room overall was clean and the duvet was the right thickness for this time of the year. There was tea and coffee and a kettle. The room was too high up in the hotel for an older person like me and my friend. The other people in the hotel were much younger than us. The stairway was poorly lit and the stairs felt dangerous. The shower head didn't work properly. We had what amounted to a trickle as most of the holes were blocked and in need of cleaning. We had two cups, but only one saucer and no spoons. The towel rail was so high up, it was out of reach. Hooks on the wall and behind the door would have been a great addition.
- Nicholas (10/5): Warm welcome, comfortable room and banging food. Definitely recommend. - The two girls that welcomed me when I first arrived and when I had breakfast were really nice and really friendly. I really liked the food that was being served. I had a nice vegetable curry & mango lassi in the evening and my breakfast was pretty decent as well. My room was clean and comfortable. I got a good night’s sleep. I thought it was pretty good value considering how nice it was and how lovely all the staff were.
It was a nice old building which seemed to have a lot of history. There was a little bit of noise in my room from adjacent bedrooms, but it wasn’t too much of an issue.
- Robert (6/5): Short and sweet - Location Nothing special
- Bethan (8/5): Comfortable Hotel with Friendly and Helpful Staff - We had a great experience at the Kings Head Hotel. The staff were very friendly, particularly George and Subash who went above and beyond to help us during our stay! Comfortable beds, great breakfast and a perfect location to see Abergavenny! Rooms could do with a bit of updating to improve the general feel, having said that they were very clean and with comfortable beds.
- Paul (4/5): Never again - Leaving Everything the rooms aren’t updated they feel flity and look flity
- Chris (8/5): Great staff - Great location in the town centre.
staff were all excellent, special mention to Owen on breakfast who couldn't have been more helpful and friendly
- Janet (8/5): -
