Guest Reviews
- Heather (6/5): - The staff accommodated an early arrival which was very appreciated (we had to pay for it, though). Breakfasts were satisfying. Bedroom was clean and comfortable. Shower water spilled out onto floor when showering. Entire hotel was clean. Fridge did not get cold. Unfortunately no air conditioning. Overall an average experience. Would stay here again.
- Asami (10/5): - 深夜着、深夜発のフライトの間の大変不便なスケジュールでの滞在でしたが、ホテルの方がこちらの状況に大変柔軟に対応してくださり、とても助かりました。
- David (6/5): - Rooms smelled like smoke, bathroom was not clean - one of our rooms had a broken faucet and leaky toilet. Checking in was weird, staff didn't give me a key or tell me the room number just the floor and when I got there another staff told a local man what room, no wifi code etc. Later on I went back to the front desk the staff was helpful though. But since there was a holiday the restaurant incl. room service was unavailable with little eating options nearby.
- 855fabiano855 (10/5): Excellent!! - Excellent!! We stayed just one night there, unfortunately. Big and very well-equipped room and bathroom!! Great buffet breakfast included!! Staff very kind!! The only problem is the location, not really very close to the main attractions of UB. But...
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing staff and amazing Hospitality... I would say best place to stay in UB.:)
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The reception and staff were pleasent but I would not recommend this hotel. The room was not clean. The bathroom was dated with a hole in the wall. The shower was unusable as the drain didn't function. The safe in the room didn't work. The location is nothing special and not near the main square or any other main tourist attractions. For the price - which is high by Ulaanbaatar standards - this is not a hotel I would recommend. You can find others half the price with better facilities.
- SarahS148 (4/5): Very dated and musty - Rooms were dated and worn and there was a musty smell. A lot of the hostels I stayed in were nicer. Wifi isn't the best and the towels were wet. The bathroom flooded when we used the shower. It definitely wasn't one I could recommend other than budget.
- Indiana_Jonesse (4/5): Two strikes in a day - After walking out of my other hotel where they gave away my reservation, I parked where the internet was and looked around for a new place. With the assistance of a hotel reservation company online, I booked this place and off I proceeded to their place. I checked in. My plan was to get cleaned up and review my itinerary for the days ahead. The grueling 24 hour flight put me down. I woke up late afternoon and decided to take a shower. It was already 3:30. I prepped myself for shower. . I put the shampoo on my head and turned on the spigot; 5 minutes, COLD WATER, 10 minutes, COLD WATER, played with the knob. It fell to the floor. I rang front desk, no answer. I put my pants on, wrapped myself in towel went down. I am on the third floor. Guy comes up, Put back the knob. He said, NO HOT WATER! BROKE!!!!! WTH? I took a cold shower. The shower stall was 2 ft wide by 2 ft wide. I was trying to avoid getting cold water on my back. I got out. I was numb all over. It is 30 degrees here. So I cancelled but stayed one night as it is too late. I woke up next morning to get breakfast (included). I sat there for 15 minutes, no one was there. Then she came. She just stared at me, did not say a word and did not approach me if I wanted something. So I left again. Do not stay here. It is a lying hotel and unfriendly.
Another element of bad surprise and a day wasted.
- Perry (6/5): New West Hotel - Pleasant stay, about 30 minute walk into centre of town. Staff were extremely helpful especially Bilguun the receptionist. However we were on the 4th floor and there is no lift, also we had no hot water in the hotel as we were told a pipe had burst? No worries didn't seem to bother them this small detail. Plenty of eateries nearby, and buses into town out the front.
- krisw007 (10/5): Fantastic introduction - Wow! Such a welcoming and helpful atmosphere. Very clean, professional. The staff are fantastic... if you have any questions, ask Bilduun. Special thanks also Orgitbalt and Sagwa. A good value, but staff became like family providing help and answering questions: unforgettable tour to Manjushri Monastery and Zaisan hill
- Mel713 (8/5): Great value - Very comfortable hotel with accommodating and helpful staff - We arrived at the train station before 7:00 a.m. with the promised taxi there to meet us. We were allowed check-in at 7 a.m. with breakfast included. The reservations manager Munkhbayar Purev offered to change our room when seeing two males checking in however the room had extra living quarters so change was not necessary but the point is that he offered above standard service on his own accord. The air-conditioning unit was not working when we checked in but without needing our prompting the bell boy changed the unit immediately. The room was huge with a king sized bed and extra living quarters. The reception and restaurant ladies were excellent. I know not everyone will get the same staff but the receptionist, Bilguum, was an absolute jewel. Her English is very good and she was able to offer help, advice, exchange money, call taxis and provide recommendations for various activities in Ulan Bator. Khandaa and Saruu were perfect waitresses, thank you ladies for the great service. The room was clean and the breakfasts were ample. They also have a very good restaurant on the premises. Depending on the time of day it is a 10-20 minute taxi ride to the main town square, Sükhbaatar Square formerly (Chingghis Khan Square) and a 3 -10 minute drive to the train station. When checking out early 4 days later we received a bagged breakfast for the road. Considering value for money and the service minded management and staff I fully recommend this hotel for travellers looking for a comfortable stay without entertainment amenities. Thank you Mr. Purev for providing a well run hotel which made our stay most pleasant
- ashley361 (10/5): Best value hotel - Hotel staff was helpful, good english and prompt room service.
Rooms are available to get iron and iron board, it was very helpful and charily for travelers. Breakfast and other foods are delicious, restaurant is feeling soft and warm.
- Marzasa (4/5): I expected more but got very disappointed - + Room was spacious
+ English speaking staff
+ Bed was comfortable
- We had a room with a separate living area so it should have included air-conditioning but there wasn't any. Then I noticed from my booking.com reservation that there should've been at least a fan in the room, but surprise surprise... there wasn't any so I went to the reception to get one and they grabbed the one from the reception and problem "was solved"...
- Someone wrote a review that "a take-away breakfast" is offered if you have to check-out early, but that didn't happen to us, so I guess we weren't that lucky...
- Dead bugs in the bathroom
- Poor lightning in the hallway
- aggelers (6/5): Nice hotel, but room for improvement - The hotel is very nice and the rooms are generous and cozy. The food in the restaurant is good and also the included breakfast. The staff is giving a great effort, but many things are not organized well, e.g. you don't get any food in the restaurant at 8pm although the opening hours are until 10pm, breakfast should be from 8am but kitchen staff only arrives at 8.10, in some rooms you get free water, in others you don't, etc. wifi works not bad, but interrupts quite often.
- TSJ-Mexico (8/5): Friendly and welcoming staff; we enjoyed (twice) our stay. - Saraa, the Executive Director, came down and welcomed us when we arrived. She speaks excellent English and expressed how much they value Booking.com guests at their hotel; in fact, we were upgraded to a beautiful deluxe room to show their appreciation. Mogi and the rest of the front desk staff were very helpful.
The quality of service (including the presentation of the breakfast) at the restaurant varies depending on who was on duty. The food (lunch and dinner) was just OK, so this is probably the weak point of the hotel. There were a few issues with the room and staff in the beginning, but everything was resolved within a reasonable amount of time.
We stayed for over a week when we arrived and we came back to New West Hotel at the end of our adventure around Mongolia.
- briansM627UM (6/5): Average Hotel - Average. Staff are nice and friendly. Rooms are comfortable. Location a little bit too far from the main CBD. Rooms are cleaned everyday. A bit of noise coming from the Karaoke Club downstairs. Road outside abit ackward driving in.
- amk2f (6/5): Average Business Hotel - Not a bad hotel for business. Big rooms, equipped with all the necessary stuff, restaurant is quite OK too. The staff is friendly and polite. All in all the hotel and its amenities are a little bit shabby though and the soundproofing is not too good either. The place is rather far away from the central square too and the general impression of the neighborhood where it located is somewhat mixed.
- frans1954 (8/5): Non smoking, nowhere!, welllll??? - I stayed here from 28-11 till 4-12-2014. A well oreinted place, not far from all what is happening in Ulaanbatar. Whatever that may be:)) Friendly and helpful staff. Rooms are simple but good for a week stay there. I hade really nothing to complaint, also good wi-fi. The breakfast was avreage, the dinner better than average. Payment was done easily with Visa card. The small bar near the entrance is a delight with very young people serving fast and friendly. I liked the place and if ever needed will go back there!
- Ourlapourway (10/5): Great location, Friendly staff and Clean rooms - We stayed at New West for five nights and during that time we ate in the adjoining 'Sprout Restaurant' at least once a day as the food was simply delicious. The staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful, everything we asked for was done quickly, efficiently and always with a smile. I would recommend this hotel as it is affordable and super clean. The rooms are spacious and quiet with good wifi and TV channel selections. The city centre is a 5 min taxi ride but taxis are so cheap in UB it makes sense to pay less on your room and taxi into town whenever you need to.
- WendyB170 (8/5): Wonderfully attentive staff - This hotel is a little way from the city centre (too far to walk) but it makes up for this in other ways. The staff look after you so well and are always trying to please. Our room was comfortable, quiet and clean. There is a restaurant that has a good chef who cooks you a nice breakfast. We had a free pick-up from the train station and staff will stop a taxi for you outside the hotel, tell the driver your destination and agree on the cost, so it is no problem to get into the centre. While there is not a lot to see in the city itself, there are some interesting sights around. Dream Mongolia will organise a great day or multi-day tour for you. This hotel is perfect to use as your base in UB.
- LifeKing (6/5): General Manager very nice, but service in general is not good - Room is nice. Room service is very slow. Staff dont speak english well. General manager speaks english and is very nice. Downstairs have KTV, but some people get drunk and once they fight in front of the hotel. Location is pretty good and can go to sukhbaataar square by walk in summer time.
- traveljunkit (8/5): Good hotel, very helpful English speaking staff - we have stayed at this hotels for a couple of nights and have found it very good. The English speaking reception staff are very helpful. When we've been lazy they have ordered us taxis from a generally reliable company. Remember where you are though and always make sure the meter is reset and visible. The bus route into the centre is very frequent and only 500t for any length of journey. There is an ATM and bank next door to the hotel. There is also a bakery next door with lovely fresh cakes !
We didn't do any of the tours that are available from the various companies as it didn't seem worth it and on reflection we were right not to. We did want to go to the large Ghengis Khan statue and the hotel found us a nice guy who drove us there and back for 50$. It 50k each way.
The breakfast was different every day and very nice.
Choose your room carefully of course as the Peace Ave is very noisy as can be the karaoke, but not that bad.
The bed was good and large, the shower was good and hot. There is a kettle in the room.
- rick_ncg (10/5): Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia Hotel is Excellent - I decided to write a review of this fine hotel. I am going back to the US tomorrow morning. I stayed in this hotel for 10 days. The accommodations are very nice, the restaurant has an excellent chef and menu. Cable TV even has at least 3 English speaking stations: BBC, National Geographic, and CNC (continuous news, business reports, world-wide weather, and travel and human interest stories). The rooms, restaurant, and other facilities have a nice interior design aspect. If I return to UB and need a hotel this probably will be my first choice. I only hope this good review doesn't fill up the hotel making it difficult to get a room and raising prices (a selfish thought but would be good for the hotel owner and staff their needs should be above mine so I wrote this review). My only concern is that if I leave the window open even on the third floor, can a criminal figure a way to enter the room in the middle of the night.
- czesszarycz (10/5): Awesome boutique hotel - I booked a room via Agoda and immediately the hotel management contacted Agoda and guided them in sorting out the detail of my stay. To my surprise, hotel's rooms, in fact were suites with a bedroom and a living room. Most staff speak English and is very helpful in sorting out travel plans in Mongolia. Kitchen offers standard breakfast, however, I'm a bit fussy what I eat and the chef was more than happy to take my special requests.
I was applying my final touches to my book and the hotel staff created wonderful ambient atmosphere to make my stay unforgettable.
- ac84 (6/5): mixed bag - We stayed for three nights took a tour and then came back for one more night before our flight out.
The Good:
We had a lot of help from Tuka who works at the hotel. She purchased our Nadaam tickets for us in advance and was kind enough to drive us to the festival our first day so we could get an idea of the layout of the city. She was very friendly and helpful.
They arranged an airport pickup and drop off at odd hours 11pm and 5:45am. It cost us $25 each trip.
The first day we were there we were able to exchange $100 USD for MNT.
The rooms were spacious.
Breakfast was included. Breakfast is free but service is slow (we noticed this throughout Mongolia) allow at least an hour.
They provided us a card with locations written in English and Mongolian to make it easier for us to communicate with cab drivers.
It was only a 40 minute walk to downtown. Its not a scenic or well-lit walk but we made the trip several times without incident.
The Bad:
English is hit or miss with the staff. I expected this to be the case but the website does advertise an English speaking staff.
Despite instructions in the welcome booklet we were told it would be impossible to make international phone calls from our room. We were also told it would be impossible to make a collect call from the lobby even if the charges were reversed.
Our room wasn’t cleaned and toilet paper was not provided readily.
After day one we were unable to exchange more USD for MNT.
Our last night there was no hot water. We tried again in the morning and the hot water was still down.
Both of the rooms we stayed in faced the street and were very loud. Traffic and other noise was pretty constant. I would pack earplugs.
