Guest Reviews
- Gilbert (10/5): - Liked the location, though the entire area is very windy in February and cold/cool. Everyone very nice and helpful. Great food. No complaints here.
- Kenneth (10/5): - Great place to stay. Feels like home with the owners. Excellent, fresh seafood in the restaurant. My favorite 7 Mares soup in the world. Giant, fresh imperial shrimp. Love the town too.
- Carlos (10/5): Oceanfront retreat - Wonderful stay in their cabañas! Checkin was super easy, the staff were very helpful at accommodating the extra blankets/pillows we needed for the kids. the beach out front was spectacular for collecting shells!
- Hans (8/5): - Right on the water with view of bay
- Daniel (10/5): - Enjoyed our waterfront chalet for one quick night before a whale-watching trip. The room was clean and comfortable.
- Rogers (10/5): - Stopped enroute from Colorado to San Jose del Cabo looking to spend some time whale watching. Had a room on the water - excellent. Had a dinner, breakfast and lunch - all very well prepared. A must is the baked Chocolate clams - fantastic. The whale watching was very good. Knowledgeable and courteous captain (Henry). Overall a great stop! Will do it again with family members.
- Robert (10/5): - A nice hotel in a remote location. Staff is friendly. Amenities close by. Good value.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Muy bien - Todo en general bastante bien
- Vanessa (10/5): Great place - We had a lovely waterfront room with comfortable beds and a hot shower. The restaurant on site has great food and the service was very friendly and accommodating. We will be back!
- Belinda (6/5): - Pleasant location just out of town which is a plus
- Diane (6/5): - Probably the best in San Carlos but was not the most comfortable. They did give us a separate modem to make sure we had internet. if you want to see the grey whales you can touch, make sure you come in February. They weren’t there yet for us.
- Jose Mario (8/5): - The hotel offers tours to watch whales, dolphins and sea lions. It was really nice to stay there.
- Eric (4/5): - we did not stay at the property. The place was not clean and my wife did not want to stay there. Instead, we stayed at Hotel Isabella
- Henriette (10/5): - This was a very unique experience. Villas Mar y Arena is located on the beach of a beautiful bay in a small fishing community. Be prepared for a rustic experience, and make sure you know some basic Spanish to communicate with most of the staff. The owner, Fito, spoke English, but he couldn’t be everywhere, so it helps to communicate with people in their own language, even if it’s just a few words. We went whale watching, and it was amazing. We lost count of how many whales and dolphins we saw, and we were even “baptized” by the water out of a whale spout next to our boat. Amazing experience!!
- Anastasia (10/5): Paradise on the Pacific - Fito and his family were wonderful! Highly recommend this beautiful location.
- Kevin (10/5): - We enjoyed our stay and also the onsite restaurant. It was quiet and offered a nice location for walking on the beach for the sunset.
- Viesturs (10/5): - Rustic , Loved the place
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Quite basic but nice family run establishment. The food was excellent and good magarittas!
- SILVANA (10/5): Hotel “speciale” sulla spiaggia - Architettura particolarmente originale, direttamente sulla spiaggia. Letti comodi Buono il ristorante. Zona tranquilla e sicura.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Our room was was excellent & very comfy!! Our view was awesome & wonderful to wake up to.
My only suggestion is, the structure the mural is on could be improved for overall ambiance of sitting by the beach. Wonderful! I wanted to spend a couple more days enjoying the view!!
- Joanna (8/5): Really Great - Tiny town with nothing to do except whale watching which is why we went. Great little hotel and really good food in their restaurant which is just as well as there isn't much choice in town if you wanted a change - we stayed 2 nights which is enough - they run whale watching trips from the hotel which were fantastic
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Small rustic seaside hotel. The main advantage is that they launch their own small boats in the bay, in front of your room, and you go whale watching.
Lots of Grey whales. Worth it.
The town is a small village. Nothing to see. The hotel had a small restaurant with excellent food.
The main reason to come here is for excellent whale watching. The town if Constitution is 60 km away and has grocery stores as well as more restaurants.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Liked the close proximity to the beach and the beautiful sunset.
Villa was very spacious and staff friendly especially Xavier .
Restaurant food was good and kitchen staff were able to accommodate dietary needs.
Noticed the ceiling fan in our room was very dusty.
Difficult to figure out AC remote control.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The villas are beautifully located on the shore of Magdelena Bay, where gray whales come to give birth. The rooms are spacious, clean, beautifully decorated and hav very comfortable beds. They offer boat tours to the mouth of the bay for whale watching. Our first night was ruined by a person blaring loud thumping music from 1:30 am until 4:30am. My husband spoke to the minister of tourism the next morning and threatened massive social media attention if this was not stopped. Pleas to the local police had no effect at all. When the racket began the next night, a police car was waiting, the music stopped, and did not return for the rest of our stay, four nights in all.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Mar y Arena is ideally located on the beach with a nice restaurant on the premises. We also went on a whale watching tour directly from the hotel.
Free parking is also provided.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nette Anlage an der Bucht
Nette Leute
- Arthur (10/5): - This is a terrific place to be at the water's edge. Food is good, servers very amiable and helpful, and the management is very amiable and helpful, too. A very good place to stay in a town that has no fast lane, and is such a good place.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Beach front hotel - Very nice! Very good food! Great views! I wish the wi-fi was available in the rooms.
Owner Fito was very nice, came to our table and spoke with us for some time.
I will be back!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great place to stay, at Magdalena Bay - This is a great place to stay while experiencing Magdalena Bay. It is located right on the beach of the Bay. To go whale watching, just walk out of you room to the boats right on the bay. Our room was very large, had a King Bed, Twin Bed , a couch and a table with 2 chairs. The bathroom was large with a semi circular shower and plenty of counter space. Nice patio in the front where you could sit down and watch the sunset. Had a good variety of TV stations and WIFi that worked.
Please be aware that this is an ECO conscious facility and they do request that guests help them to conserve water. The Hotel has a restaurant onsite that has very good food and very reasonable prices.
A nice Extra was they provide drinking water in the room in a pitcher (not plastic bottles). Everything in the room was clean when we arrived.
We had a spectacular whale watching experience with Javier, who is related to Fito the owner. Out on the bay we saw Pelicans and several other species of sea birds. Also spotted some dolphins and seals.
But the highlight was a close up view of the grey whales.
We are definitely planning a return visit.
- Jim (8/5): Nicest place in town, waterfront on Magdelena Bay. - Great food, friendly hosts. My only complaint was that my reservation included free continental breakfast but when we arrived they claimed it was not included. They did give us coffee and toast the first day but that was it. After spending many hundreds of bucks on two rooms/dinners and drinks over the course of three nites you would think they would have re-thought their decision not to throw us a couple of coffees and some fruit. Bad Business! The whale excursion they offer was for three hours. While walking through town our first night we hooked up with a local guy who took us whale watching for the day(9hrs) he also took us snorkeling, fishing and made us a fresh ceviche with fish he spear fished while we were snorkeling all for the same price.
- Lori (10/5): Eco friendly hotel in an amazing location!! - My husband and I stayed recently (January) at the Mar y Arena and really enjoyed this rustic hotel/camp as a base for whale watching. The actual town is very small and very basic, but the owner of Mar y Arena has done a wonderful job providing a very unique experience while enjoying outdoor activities. We stay in the ocean front cabins. The view was amazing and well worth the few extra dollars. The rooms were well appointed, with fridge, table/chairs, closet and HUGE bathroom. Service was excellent and we had several very nice conversations with Fito, the owner. He makes you feel right at home. We ate all our meals in the restaurant and had the best Chocolate Clam dish in the area. Ask Fito about his "secret sauce"! We stayed 2 nights and would recommend staying here as a base for whale watching, etc. You can even arrange the tours right from the hotel, being super convenient, which we took advantage of, and had an awesome experience. Thank you so much Fito for creating such a special place!!
- PETER (6/5): gray whale watching - ok for one or two nights if you are there for whale encounters
- Dave and Sue (8/5): Cute Palapas on the Beach - We really enjoyed our stay here. The accommodations are just as described online - basic, clean and comfortable. There was hot water when we needed it and the towels were fluffy. The palapas are right on the beach with a terrific view of the sunset. The village provides everything you need except a bank. As the whale watching trips get paid for in cash, make sure you bring some. We had a great stay and an amazing day out on the water.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Best option in Puerto San Carlos - Not many choices if you need a place to stay for whalewatching. But the villas were pretty spare and in need of serious maintenance. The price is right for what you get. Just don't expect too much.
- Nils (10/5): Excellent option to visit the Whales. - Great hotel with everything you need for Whale Watching in Baja California. I recommend it 100%.
We only had a little bit of bad experience in our check in due to a miss understanding. They thought they had no vacancy and since I had already paid they propose to me sending us to another hotel and a Free meal... the only thing is that the other hotel was terrible!! (And half the price) so the proposal for me was and abuse. Fortunately it wasn't necessary at the end.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Cute place on the water. Frit, the owner, is great and speaks English. They offer whale watching trips leaving from the beach in front of the hotel. There is a good restaurant and a bar on site. If we return to San Carlos we will stay here again.
- michael (8/5): Mucho bueno habatition, great hotel - Great place, the owner Fito and his #2 Javiar (brothers) were very gracious host. Great experience with the up close whale watching trip. This was my second d stay and won't be my last.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Not what we were expecting - Let's just say the room we had was not what was in the photos - those where the other rooms. I did like that it was on the beach and we could stare at the surf and boats, but let's be clear what this room was, it was a converted room at the backend of the boat shop, we could hear them working constantly around us.
