Guest Reviews
- Barbara (10/5): Helt perfekt, det var præcis hvad vi drømte. Alt var smukt og fungerede godt. - Pænt og rent , smukt indrettet og fine omgivelser . God service. Beliggenhed virkelig god. Gode senge og hovedpuder.
- Diana (8/5): - Quick communication, friendly staff, floor heating, nice quiet location. Dusty, extra vacuming and air purifier needed.
- Andrzej (10/5): -
- Cristina (9/5): Beautiful Japanese house - Beautiful japanese house, very clean, with everything you need. Including washing/drying machine. We could leave our bags there before the check in time!! Communication was great, got very fast answers. Even tho it's very beautiful, the thick mattresses were nice but sleeping on the Futon was not restful because you can still feel the hard floor. Windows don't have curtains which I understand the style it's like that but could be quite bright in the early morning, also you could hear all the noise from the street. Also we could sadly not leave our bags there after checking out, that could've been helpful because our train was leaving late in the evening. A bit far from bus/subway station.
- Bhavana (10/5): Excellent location , clean place - No breakfast offered , I would have liked that Breakfast and a person (live) to answer any questions
- Jacqueline (10/5): -
- Guest (10/5): It was a perfect way to experience Kyoto. -
- Yvette (10/5): Expérience typique japonaise - Maison typique au cœur de Kyoto. Maison spacieuse avec un petit jardin. Arrivée très facile. Cuisine peu équipée pour manger à la maison.
- Roland (8/5): -
- Jeanettt (10/5): Helt fantastisk - Det var utrolig stort, meget autentisk, virkelig flot. To toiletter, flot bade område. Spændende japansk morgenmad. Ville anbefale det til andre. Måske lidt dyrt, men alle pengene værd. Kunne godt have tænkt mig at vi kunne tjekke ind før kl 16, så vi kunne udnytte faciliteter lidt mere.

- Lurdes (10/5): - O alojamento é lindo ! Com um jardim anterior. Espaçoso ! Pena só termos ficado uma noite. Muito bem localizado . Gostei de tudo

- Guest (9/5): - Size Lack of washing machine
- Justin (9/5): A nice place to stay in a cozy section of the city. - Beautiful little Ryokan within walking distance of markets and such. Took a 30 min walk to Gion Was not clear from booking photos that there were two properties. Expected to have a little more space than we did. Perhaps I did not look closely enough when booking.
- O. (10/5): -
- Craig (10/5): Exceptional -
- Henrik (9/5): Great stay, felt traditional yet relaxed - Lovely hide-away in central Kyoto Some issues with breakfast as I did not get any although I had ordered it, but it was just as much my fault for not communicating proactively.
- Jesper (9/5): Superb -
- Martin (10/5): We highly recommend this place, especially for families looking for a cozy and authentic Kyoto experience. - We enjoyed our stay, accommodation was very comfortable and spacious- ideal for both parents and children. House well equipped with everything we needed. Location great too-just about 10mins walk to a shopping arcade full of stores, souvenirs and restaurants. None
- Albert (9/5): great machiya to stay at in kyoto - well maintained machiya. good location, overall everything was clean and well kept. great for large groups. would like to have hand soap in all of the bathrooms, and more laundry detergent.
- Stephanie (10/5): Affordable Group-Friendly Ryokan with Amazing Hosts - We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful ryokan-style house in Kyoto. Our group of 10 stayed at the West Hall and was warmly welcomed, and the hosts were incredibly accommodating from start to finish. They provided plenty of futons for everyone, and the two double beds were especially comfortable. One of the highlights was how flexible and thoughtful they were, they allowed us to drop off our bags early before check-in and even let us store them after check-out, which made our travel schedule so much easier.
Communication was excellent as well. Any time we had questions, even late at night, they responded quickly and helpfully via email. The hospitality we received truly made our trip more enjoyable, and we’re all so grateful for the experience. Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for a traditional yet comfortable stay in Kyoto. We initially thought there was a washing machine in the West Hall when we booked, but it turned out to be only available in the East Hall, our mistake, but a bit confusing. We were able to send our bags to the property via Yamato service, though sending them out wasn’t an option directly from the accommodation. However, the hosts helpfully recommended a nearby convenience store that offers the service. It wasn’t a big issue, but something worth noting for future guests.
- Templeton (10/5): very japanese, wonderful location, no full sized chairs, perfect garden. - wonderful location, darling garden none
- Shaya (10/5): A beautiful experience - Authenticity of the place. Beautiful little garden view. Was super clean. Mattresses and pillows were comfortable
- Luke (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jessica (10/5): Beautiful and relaxing in the heart of Kyoto. - The most beautiful house we stayed at in Japan. Loads of beds and room options to allow a family of 6 to travel comfortability. The onsen was great. Loved all the rooms and small gardens. Loves the complimentary tea and coffee and slippers. It was a lovely place to relax. That is was enjoyable to spend a few hours away from the hustle and bustle of the streets. We did find the futon mats were relatively hard for comfort when sleeping ( the beds were fine). But there was enough extra mattess that when you stacked two it felt better.
- Amber (10/5): Tranquility in Kyoto - Amazing property, in a central area! 35 min walk to Gion District. The hosts were amazing! I accidentally left my flat iron there and they were able to send to my other hotel no problem! Highly recommend if you are trying to escape the hustle and bustle, quiet neighborhood. You can hear the other guests while inside your space but they have a quiet time starting at 10pm.
- Igor (8/5): Very good -
- Bryan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shane (10/5): Incredible accomodation, tall person friendly bed and shower - Incredible accommodation, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Beds are very, very comfortable. We are 6ft and had no issues with the beds and the shower is huge with zero height issues (low points in the home to watch your head on, but this is normal given age of the building, which is all part of the charm)
Beautiful bath (deep and fits 2 very easily), convenient small kitchen and perfect location. Great communication leading up to and during our stay. Highly recommended. Even better in the flesh.
- Michelle (10/5): Exceptional - We really enjoyed the stay. Communication was clear, the facilities (especially the bath and garden) are beautiful, and the breakfast was amazing. Nothing.
- Young (10/5): Exceptional -
- S. (10/5): Exceptional -
- Megan (8/5): Kyoto Adventure - The house was in a great area! Within walking distance of great restaurants, markets and trains. It was also very close to many things we had booked for our trip like a traditional tea ceremony and Samurai museum. Absolutely loved the bathroom! It was very spacious and steamed up nucely While the house was beautiful, the pictures are slightly misleading. The pictures make it look like it's one big house, while there are two separate properties. It was only when we got there I quickly realized this. While we didn't let it ruin our time in Kyoto, it was disappointing.
- Dixon (8/5): Very good -
- Aurelien (8/5): A real Immersion in old Kyoto - location, spaciousness, charm no water was provided during the 3 nights of our stay. We had to buy some from the 7/11
Wifi signal very week, hardly possible to work or stream movies
real mattresses will be welcome in the room upstairs
- Shafiq (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jason (10/5): Exceptional - The interior design was very nice. The location was easy to travel from.
- Misael (10/5): Exceptional - Everything. The host was great and gave us the explanation on how to use the house.
Highly recommend 👌
- Glenn (10/5): Really really nice - Spacious over two stories with two bedrooms with two futons in one but more betting in cupboards. Large bath area with cedar tub and shower area. Double basins and large mirror. Small kitchenette and dining room. Both bathroom and dining room open to enclosed courtyard gardens . Quiet street . Lovely bars and returns in area A couch would have been lovely
- Saesamyebbeun (10/5): Exceptional - The size was spacious but super cozy. It was a great place for a family of 5. There were 2 toilets and a separate shower bath room which was great. We all wished there was a full length mirror on the first floor.
- Tony (8/5): Nice stay - Traditional stay, very spacey and cleaning lady was super nice. Security lock was a bit insecure.
- Alex (9/5): Superb -
- Malte (10/5): Exceptional -
- Aleksandar (10/5): Peaceful and atmospheric - This accommodation offers more than just a place to rest; it provides an authentic experience in an ideal Kyoto location, putting everything within reach. It exudes tranquility, especially after the vibrancy of Tokyo, allowing your soul to rejuvenate. Gratitude to all involved in making our stay enjoyable, even if we never crossed paths.
- Mohammed (8/5): Live with Traditions - It’s bigger than other accommodations, good location, very quiet. As a tourist, I always look for help wherever I stay. 90% of the time, I get a suggested solution. This place represents the 10%. The breakfast is below average.
- Mohammed (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alastair (9/5): Authentic surroundings, cosy neighbourhood feel, true Japanese hospitality. - The host was so great. Quite large so perfect for a family of 5. Loved the little home made books sharing information on the area like restaurants, services and retail stores. Very authentic Japanese experience.
- Mary (9/5): Superb -
- Mary (9/5): Superb -
- Kimberley (9/5): Superb - Beautiful building in a convenient location. Nothing
- Mashael (8/5): Nice experience - Nice vibes, clean The water was super cold and whenever we get hot water the pressure gets very low
- Gail (9/5): Superb -
- Kitvara (9/5): If you want Japanese experience in Kyoto this one is perfect - Bath tub is big
Kitchen is well equip
Japanese style futon bed The location is hard to find even for Kyoto taxi driver
- Mas7704 (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing accommodation, very comfy and convenient (10 min walk to everywhere). Very spacious, best option for families or big groups. Staff very rezponsive and supportive. Walk distance to nearest train station is 10 min
- Nikoleta (9/5): Nice experience of Japanese Ryokan. - Very nice ryokan in Kyoto, we enjoyed the night there. Lots of space, interesting Japanese style breakfast and comfy beds. The bath is also big enough for 2 people. Overall nice experience. A bit pricey.
- Jane (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Terri (9/5): Superb -
- James (9/5): A marvellous place to sample traditional Japanese living. - The keys to the property were on an electronic basis so the code arrived in a text message.
We never met the hosts.
The house itself was gorgeous, very clean and offered the perfect opportunity to sample minimalist Japanese living. The property also offered a washing machine and tumble drier. An absolute godsend for those who have been travelling for a while and in need to refresh their travelling wardrobe.
The accomodation was very quiet and the beds very comfortable.
A convenience store called "Family Mart" is nearby and in my experience is the best place to withdraw cash from their cash machines. Nothing. It was perfect.
- Alisa (10/5): Beautiful house in residential area. - We were impressed with the house! It was beautiful and spacious. The host was kind and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay! About 12 minutes walk to Nishiki market and shopping area. Everything was great. Nothing to complain.
- Kai (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dustin (9/5): Huge townhouse, pay by the person (we only 2), and enjoy spacious Japanese living - Huge space in the heart of Kyoto, near Gion district. Excellent high end area. This unit was absolutely huge for Japan standards, it was the same size as my condo in Vancouver Canada (1,100 sqft). Absolutely perfect vibe and a must do experience for the western traveller. Come home and have the most romantic bath in an incredible bathroom. Too many emails and messages prior to arrival. Had to pay extra for breakfast (which was excellent japanese style),
- Ann (9/5): Superb -
- Shufen (10/5): A traditional house with beds and tatami rooms - My father-in-law and mother-in-law like the experience of staying in a machiya very much. The rooms on the east side are divided into two types, one with beds and one with tatami mats, and they are separated by a Japanese-style door, which fully meets our needs. We had a comfortable and relaxing stay in this well maintained traditional house and everyone got a good night's sleep. There are so many great izakaya nearby, we really like this area and it was our favorite place to stay in Japan. There is a washing machine and dryer in the house, which is very convenient for rainy days. I want to stay here next time I come to Kyoto. It is difficult to book for four consecutive nights in peak season, otherwise we hope to stay longer.
- Luke (9/5): Superb -
- Gladys (10/5): if you’d visit Kyoto, please stay in Tawara-An. You won’t regret, trust me! - I had an amazing experience staying at this wonderful place in Kyoto. The facilities were top-notch and the host was extremely welcoming and accommodating. The attention to detail in the room was impressive, with thoughtful touches like a Bose speaker and comfortable pajamas provided for guests. The two yards were also a great addition and provided a relaxing outdoor space to enjoy. The abundance of plates and different kinds of cups made it easy for us to enjoy meals in the comfort of our own space. Overall, this is a great place for families or friends looking for a comfortable and enjoyable stay in Kyoto. Highly recommend!
