- Jennifer (2/5): Left out on the street! - My wife has stayed here in the past and liked it, however, this place is currently closed and up for sale (Sep 2025). We arrived on a friday night after making a booking a couple of months prior. The doors were locked, curtains all drawn and no lights on. No response when ringing bell or knocking. On calling the 'hotel contact number' we were connected to a foreign call centre who were of little help, and Hotels.com are refusing to refund our payment because they cant get approval from a manager... He's legged it!

- Carl (1/5): A horrible experience - Since the property was closed and had obviously been so for some while I found myself with no accommodation in Durham despite the fact that I had been charged by booking.com for my stay 3 days before my arrival. Along with several other people I spent a long time on the phone to booking.com to gain redress and was not impressed by the quality of your customer service team
- Jacob (1/5): - I did not enjoy anything about the property as when we arrived the hotel had been reposed by the land lord on 25th July and had no email or nothing to tell me that the hotel would not be able to honour the booking so I drove a hour and a half to have to drive home on my girlfriends birthday not really acceptable to be perfectly honest still waiting for my money back I think it’s really poor from booking.com as well that they are still advertising a property that no longer exists

- Kelly (1/5): - Daniel was the only good thing about our stay. Friendly, polite and helpful. Hotel info said parking is available on site for £10 per day. It isnt. The only parking is on the street over the road from the hotel. It also said Key card access ( again not true) The room was not the cleanest I have seen and I have my doubts about the freshness of the bedding. The window frame was cracked but this can be overlooked in a Georgian hotel, the dust can not. There was a noisy dehumidifier /air cooler which had to be left running to prevent the room becoming stifling. The ceiling was stained and marked ,there was no hairdryer or telephone in the room (also listed amongst facilities) There was a bar menu but that wasn't available either. Next morning there was no hot water in the shower or from the faucet so I couldn't even wash my hands properly. As there are no telephones in the room, I had to walk down 3 flights of stairs to report this. Dan (again wonderful) hurried off to try and fix the boiler but wasn't able to. We checked out and booked into another hotel and requested early check in so we could shower.

Definately not 5 star, I guess this was when it was first opened needs a lot of TLC, owner seems to be running it down Probably because its up for sale. definately not worth the money they charge for room. It's more like Faulty Towers. Also wallpaper fallen off wall and left on carpet cobwebs everywhere, Gracie did everything, not enough staff on a evening to deal with any food orders, with what food was available, we walked out of bar after waiting so long for dessert which we didn't get, chef didn't wear any appropriate clothing while cooking, complete shambles see above

TV wouldn't turn off and the signal was terrible. Cleanliness of both room and restaurant was OK, but you could tell things were missed. No soap in the rooms, puddles of water on the floor from the air conditioner, nowhere to put any clothes...no drawers or wardrobe so had to just use our bag and a bit tired generally...great curtains over the door but not the window so a bit pointless! Breakfast was only full English, with no beans available, which wasn't any good for my little boy (and wasn't clear when booking). Very comfy bed but the pillows were awfully lumpy.

- sarah1Wales (2/5): Appalling customer service...Do not book - Booked a room in March of this year for our sons graduation yesterday. I booked and paid OYO directly and received a confirmation email. Arrived after a wonderful day celebrating our sons achievements to find that our room had been double booked. The manager assured me that I would get a refund and told me that on the previous evening the same room had been double booked . So at 10pm I booked another room at the Delta hotel. I phoned OYO and was told that they did not recognise the booking reference or my telephone number (the manager had recognised the email address on the booking confirmation as the area manager) I emailed OYO last night and as at yet not had a response, so I very much doubt that I will be reimbursed the £161.10 paid. IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING BOOKING THIS HOTEL PLEASE DON'T... THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS APALLING.

- Andrew (7/5): Loved Durham nice little town with nice river walks and cathedral and castle worth visiting - Good location 10 minute walk to old downtown. Friendly staff and cook breakfast. Room was pretty cramped with shower sticking into room space. We were there when it was 28 degrees. Room didn’t cope well with the heat.

Poor and depleted decor. A 4 or 5 star hotel is not like this. Very poor breakfast for a supposed 4 or 5 star hotel. Honestly I have had better from the van on the side of the road

Room (Azurri) was hot and stuffy despite two electric blowers - which didn’t seem to have a cooling option. Only one of the two windows partially opened. No breakfast choice - only full English ( or part thereof) offered. No fruit or cereal on offer which, given the cost, was very surprising. btw reference to 'private parking' is simply not true - parking, if you can get it, is across the road 90p/30mins between 8am and 6pm.
- sumasdfghjkl (10/5): Romantic getaway - Stayed in the garden room with the hot tub. The room was beautiful, the hot tub was private and had fairy lights which set a relaxing atmosphere. Daniel, the manager, was helpful and friendly and June who made the breakfast was welcoming and made a beautiful breakfast. The gas had went off on the whole street and the only dinner option was pizza, I was disappointed but decided to try it and I was surprised as it was so nice. As compensation Daniel offered us an upgrade in our drinks package and a late checkout. I would definitely come back again.

- lindasR4667FU (2/5): What a disappointment! - Although the male on reception was lovely, the tattoos on his face and clothes were unprofessional. He explained that there had been a week long problem with the gas connection and instead of the full evening meal we expected we would get pizzas! Neither myself nor my partner can eat pizzas and as it was our 10th anniversary’s that night we asked if there was any alternative. He suggested we would receive food/drinks vouchers in lieu for the inconvenience. We were in the le Jardin, with a bottle of cheap cava provided. The bathroom smelled damp, the hot tap was broken. There was no hand towels. We decided to eat out in Durham that night expecting a part refund for the lack of evening meal. The green “exit” light in the room was so bright we couldn’t sleep. The next morning the patio door still couldn’t be opened to the hot tub The breakfast was a comedy show. The two ladies tried their best but the cooked food was laid out cold and obviously had to be microwaved. The main “cook” was not wearing anything to keep her hair tied back or covered. They freely told us they didn’t really work there and only helped out with cooking/cleaning & hot tub maintenance! This hotel is very tired and in my opinion going through a serious financial crisis and the gas/electricity which has been mentioned on other reviews from months back is an excuse or a ruse. We are still waiting for our email vouchers or refund! .

A power cut the day before meant no breakfast as the delivery hadn't arrived. If I'd have been the owner I'd have gone to a supermarket. No refund was offered for lack of breakfast.

- 342bethc (10/5): Room with a view - Fantastic stay at this hotel. Staff kept in touch via email to ask ahead of our stay if we needed anything, kept us updated and were all so friendly. We booked Le Jardin and were not disappointed such a gorgeous room. Bottle of prosecco included amazing views and lovely hot tub. We took full advantage of sitting in the tub drinking our prosecco whilst taking in the lovely garden views! Pina Coladas in the bar were so nice and the pizzas we had were very tasty too! I've wanted to stay at this place for a while and only gutted we weren't staying for 2 nights! We don't live too far so will definitely return, I'm eyeing up deals and other rooms already as they have a fab choice of rooms, all just as stunning! Thank you townhouse for a lovely stay and to all the staff, apologies didn't get names but credit where it's due, you all work really hard and made us feel so welcome. Very nice breakfast this morning too! Already recommended to friends and family.
- 26abbie26 (4/5): Disappointing stay, unfortunately not value for money - We made a mistake of booking a double room when we actually wanted a twin room, however there were a couple of issues beyond that . A big notice across the bedroom window stating that a replacement is awaited is not brilliant! The magnifying mirror in the room didn't work. The breakfast was very limited, coffee machine was not working, waiting for replacement parts !! so only nescafe available , a selection of 2 juices , no cereal and just the one option for a cooked breakfast, full, English or not. And the B&B cost us £154.
- TK (7/5): Gorgeous room very close to the city. - Loved the location. And the room was gorgeous. We did explain when we went down for breakfast that there was no hot water so couldn't shower or bath which was upsetting as it is quite expensive to stay here and choose the room because of the bath. They did inform us that there was a gas leak which was out of their control. It just would have been nice to have have had a bath.
- SHONA (3/5): We won't come back - location Our room felt unclean, sheets were left hanging on the bathroom door, and the carpet looked dirty. The sheets were not creased, and the windows wouldn't open. The room was small, as was the bed, which had a soft, spongy mattress.

So unhappy left after returning from night out to collect bags so chose not to stay. Tried to contact the hotel to discuss. Left a message no call back.

- Z460FEstephenh (10/5): Incredible! - Hands down one of the nicest places we have ever stayed!!!! Spent 2 nights in the Hideaway room and wow, what a room it was!!!! The bed was comfortable, and the bath was just unreal. So spacious, and the underfloor heating, air-conditioning, lighting, and decor, made it a memorable experience. The general manager Dan was an absolute legend and was incredibly hospitable and friendly. The food was also incredible and would highly recommend the pizzas to anyone. We will definitely be back again!!!!! Thank you Dan for an amazing trip to Durham and see you again soon.

We enjoyed our stay so much we stayed an extra night!! Great location car parking outside. Dan, June and all the staff lovely and friendly. - Guest (8/5): Great location and really helpful staff. - The location of the hotel was great for exploring the old city and the staff were fantastically helpful. Well stocked bar. The owner is relatively new and appears to have great ambition to develop the the hotel and restaurant - so I suspect it will only get beter. Couldn't have asked for more from him. All rooms are individual and no doubt some are better than others. Our room was at the front of the old townhouse and looked over the road. That (and celebrating students) did make it a bit noisy at night. Other rooms at the back of the hotel will have been quieter.

- David (6/5): Mixed feelings... great staff and hotel, poor room - Daniel and his staff are very friendly and do a good job. The hotel reception, bar and restaurant are all of a very good standard. The theme of the rooms is good. Its a really hard review to give as the hotel is nice and I know Daniel has only had the hotel since January but on this occasion the room fell short The room was themed as a cruise line. Colours and furniture were all matching the theme. Few points room needs a bin as the tiny bin in bathroom was not suitable. Some blackout blinds are needed as the curtains are very pale and let lots of light in. The room does need some attention there was damage to the decor and lots of bits wrong. The bathroom was probably the worst bit. Needs lots of attention. Mixed fittings, shower temperamental, bath needs resealing Would I stay here again, I would but just not in the cruise room
- robk895 (10/5): Amazing hotel - Just stayed for a night at the Townhouse. Amazing hotel!! The staff were brilliant, Dan, Maggie and June were really friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The room and hot tub was amazing, very clean and looked after. Breakfast was also delicious. Try the Pina Colada at the bar, best I’ve ever had ;) Will definitely book again soon!

Hot tub was amazing and the views surrounding that room were lush. Dan is literally a one man band nothing was too much trouble service was outstanding food beautiful and we felt really looked after. We will definitely be back and would recommend this place to anyone, it’s set in an ideal location too for going in to the city centre. Thanks again for a fabulous stay xxx

- Y5725YOrobw (10/5): The best staff, fantastic hotel, will be back again! - Had a great two night stay here, couldn't speak any more highly of the staff. First of all Dan - the coolest and most stylish man (according to my Mrs 😂) was fantastic from the outset, telling us he had the Azzuri room available if we wanted it, and allowed us to have one night in that room, and the second in the one we originally booked (Midas) because Azzuri was booked out for our second night. Both rooms were fantastic, we both absolutely loved them. Dan is an absolute top guy, and a credit to the place 👍🏻 Then there's also June! The best breakfast maker, we're going to be gutted now we're home and we can't have her breakfasts anymore 💔 She's also the best and most discreet under the bed knicker finder in the world 🤣🤣 Great hotel, great staff, can't fault it at all, and we will be back 100%
- L2256FBrachelm (6/5): Not 5* - Stayed here on a Wowcher deal. The information on the hotel says its 5* and it most certainly is not . The room was ok but quite rough around the edges and lacked lots of finishing touches and wasn't as clean as I would have liked. The food was very average and again breakfast was ok but was made with very cheap ingredients and only got the option of a full english. When asked if I would like an orange juice with my breakfast, I said yes and then got a glass of orange squash , I would expect fresh juice in a 5* hotel . It said they provided hair dryers so I didn't pack mine, upon arrival I noticed there wasn't one and asked at reception, they told me they probably wouldn't have one but would go and look. Nobody got back to me so I didn't get a hair dryer , not ideal when in a room with a hottub. We missed out on our free bottle of prosecco on arrival because we didn't ask for it🤷♀️ When I brought up a couple of the issues I had over a private message I was told they were busy as wowcher had made a mistake and were selling the deal too cheaply so basically it wasn't there fault about the one choice for breakfast or the missing prosecco as I had gotten it for cheap .

- jadelB3632SU (10/5): Last minute get away/night out - Under new management!! We have always loved the townhouse however it went through a bit of a rough time while changing owners etc.. Stayed last week with my partner as a last minute get away / escape from kids! Can’t fault the place what so ever ! Our room was absolutely gorgeous and so was breakfast the next morning! June who served our breakfast was absolutely amazing and what a bubbly character too! When we checked in we were greeted by a lovely girl on the desk called Amber who was so polite and attentive to our needs, we must have asked her 100 questions and she was great with us. I would definitely recommend staying here and I would definitely recommend asking Amber about restaurants and bars to go to she knew them all !

Location is perfect in Durham, right in city centre so you have a chance to visit all the historic places near by, I would like to add how nice the hot tub was with the view which made our trip as a whole
- Deepika Punshi (4/5): A bit overrated. - The location of the hotel is great. Walking distance from the city center. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the rooms need an upgrade and they aren’t as eclectic as I thought they would be. The room didn’t have a hair dryer, had to walk down 4 floors to get one. They didn’t have water in our room, had to walk down 4 floors to get some. They definitely need some attention to detail. The building doesn’t have a lift, which is ok, but no phones in the room also means that you need to climb stairs to ask a question. The rooms had no fridge, iron nothing. For the price one is paying these are basics ones expects. The staff was helpful and tried their best but the next day for breakfast they ran out of eggs. They didn’t have jam to go with toast no fruit to serve and very limited options for vegetarians. I wouldn’t expect things like this in a hotel which has such high ratings. Overall cool building but wouldn’t stay there again.

- Bernadette (8/5): Gorgeous hotel & amazing staff - The staff June, Becca & chef Caesar were excellent. We had problems with the hot tub not being hot enough & June went out of her way to sort things out for us, cannot praise her enough. Would love to stay here again 🙂 Hot tub didn’t reach proper temperature until the last morning of our stay. Though June sorted us a temporary alternative, would be better if the owner got it checked out.

- Jonathan (7/5): - The actual bedroom did meet our expectations however the bathroom didn't feel clean, mould around the edge of shower, sink plug was stuck, paint coming off wall. Parking details are misleading, it says private parking is possible on site @ £10. This is not true ,only found this out when checking in and being told that it was an error on Booking.com, which still hasn't been changed at time of review. We had to park on the road where it's chargeable between 8.30am and 6pm at approx £18-£19 for a day. When we arrived back on the second night at around 22:40 we found the front door locked with a sign saying call this number for out of hours. On calling we were described an alternative way of getting into the hotel. This should have been explained at check-in. The breakfast and breakfast staff were good.
- Sharon (10/5): - It's lovely, so impressed. The staff are great, cheerful, and welcoming, good food, well made, and a small but perfectly formed bar. The rooms are comfortable, warm and beautifully designed spaces, we stayed in The Cruise, furnished with rather expensive yachting inspired furniture designs. The bath is the deepest one I've ever seen, and the shower, once I found out how to turn it on, was fantastic. Just two minor things. Would have liked a darker room, but the curtains allow rather a lot of light. Blackout blinds or similar would be more my preference. And the shower curtain rail could use replacing, it's a bit corroded.

- Mike Ashcroft (9/5): Weekend away - Great little boutique hotel in a great location with nearby parking. Under new management when we stayed who were really welcoming. All staff were really friendly too, nothing too much trouble. We stayed in the cruise room which was a welcome change to the Bland rooms you often get at mainstream establishments. The bed felt a little tired, had to request a hairdryer at reception. No room make up. The lack of room make up was explained that we hadn't displayed the " please make up room " card but there wasn't one in the room. All above very minor issues though. Slightly over priced in my view but would consider again if we were in Durham itself.

We had a beautiful Sunday Lunch which was delicious and i would highly recommend. Staff were all friendly. Dan was especially very attentive and charming and made our visit even better. I will certainly be recommending to friends and family and planning another visit myself.
- Wander718415 (8/5): New management- would stay again - We were offered a room from the new management after we had a terrible experience last year in August whilst the hotel was in the middle of being taken over. We honestly couldn’t fault our stay this time around. We were greeted with friendly staff and the room was immaculate, the hot tub was clean and hot too! The restaurant and bar was open this time around and the food was gorgeous, both dinner and breakfast! The room we stayed in had had work done from last time and its definitely made a lot of improvements. Overall we had a lovely nights stay and would now recommend!
- SP1207 (10/5): Galentines trip - Visited a few weeks ago for a last minute galentines and we have already rebooked for this month. Nothing was a bother for any of the staff and they were so attentive! Our hot tub was amazing and exactly what we needed on a cold day. The food was above and beyond and we can’t wait to book in for a Sunday dinner! Thank you to Dan and the staff for our incredible visit we can’t wait to be back soon.
