Guest Reviews
- Peter (4/5): - I wasn’t confident about self checking into building and room the key pad at the entry wasn’t operating properly and I had to call the emergency number which they then reset remotely. The room was clean and good bed. There was no waste bin in the room and no lamps so either the main light was on or you were in the dark.
- Michelle (2/5): - This could be a junkies paradise, which my husband and I definitely do not fit in!
There was nowhere to park our vehicle other than on the street, around the corner from a working phone booth where it was obvious a drug deal was occurring.
The shared kitchen was disgraceful and dirty!
This property was nothing like the Wotif blurb!
Should be shutdown. I requested a refund and was told it was up to the Manager, who couldn’t even be bothered contacting me to discuss!
DO NOT BOOK THIS ACCOMMODATION!!!
- Jes (4/5): - The A/C in the room 201 assigned to me smells so bad when turned on. The bathroom & kitchen floor, desktop & kitchen bench were unclean & full of sticky stains. Dishes, glasses, cups & cutlery were unclean & not properly washed. Wobbly desk is broken, with missing drawers & almost about to fall apart. Desk chair has a loose detached seat. Disappointingly substandard.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Never again - Totally dirty, smelled of cigarettes and carpet stained, kept shoes on, didn’t want to touch barefoot.
- Bill (6/5): - Did not receive unlock codes by SMS so had to call the hotel number. Wardrobe hanging rail was missing so no place to hang clothes, hanging hooks in bathroom were broken.
- Josh (2/5): - Don’t stay here it’s filthy. Came here for a work stay and I usually just need a bed and my own bathroom and I’m happy. The place was filthy and had a very thick cigarette smell. Cops bashed on my door at 1am looking for someone. I know the hotel can’t help that but not would be a first in 100’s of places I’ve stayed. If you are looking for a place as a work traveller do not stay here if you value your safety and quality of sleep.
- Michael (2/5): - The condition of Aspire Motel is terrible, and I couldn’t sleep well due to the bed was wet, Mold on the wall and the air conditioner was smelly.
- Joanne (6/5): -
Sone where to put your head and shower for however long you need to be in Newcastle. A lick of paint and some new furniture would help in making the rooms a bit brighter. Soft closing cupboards and draws in the kitchen would stop people from slamming them shut and the wall vibrating in the room that backs onto the kitchen.
- Courtney (8/5): - Mould in the bathroom, marks all over the walls, bed wasn’t stable felt like the legs were going to detach from the bed.
- Leanne (2/5): - Gross, absolutely stank, never again
- Diorne (6/5): Not as advertised - Pretty sub standard. Pictures on advertising make the place seem better than it is. Had trouble putting in silly codes for doors to gain entry.
- David (2/5): - Don't do it smelly,unclean ,bed uncomfortable
- Anders (2/5): - Room smelt like mould.
- Ann Marie (2/5): - The place was dirty and the floors and walls needed a scrub. Not suitable for people with disabilities especially wheelchairs and those who have bad legs. No access to lift.
- Mikayla (2/5): - Place was dirty, found toe nails next to the bed when we arrived. When we contacted staff they didn’t give any help.
- Paige (6/5): - everything was fine except massive stains on carpet as soon as you walk in the door and all throughout the room, as well as graffiti on the back of the bathroom door. room 316
- John (6/5): - There stay was fine, but we noticed a poor sound installation.
- Heather (6/5): - Bed clean and comfortable; noisy Aircon - no info about operation. No info about power of microwave oven. Would like manual for appliances. Apparently no recycling on premises - cleaning staff knew little English and could not advise how to prevent recyclable waste going to landfill.
- Selina (4/5): - My room smelt terrible like cigarette smoke, despite being a non-smoking room and not smoky inside. When washed my pjs, smell was in them so I'm not sure whether the sheets were washed before I arrived. Showed a nice share kitchen but I couldn't find any utensils or crockery. Air con broke on my last night there and only able to open window a very shirt way for ventilation anyway. The booking staff were nice.
- Terry Merlin (4/5): - The linen towels and shower were good. The carpet dirty. The room was sterile and lacked bedside tables, pictures, colour. The area and street was ugly and noisy. The shops closed and empty. Depressing place.
- Missy (6/5): - The couple room it should have a cough to go rest in the room, and should have a kitchen to fecility for small preparation
- Kenneth (2/5): - Cleaners really WORK in this premises ! Room 309 was left dirty & this really spoiled the stay.
Management issues !
NO offer was made from "the overseas manager" to allocate a made up room.
Also, CLEANED the air-conditioning filters which were FILTHY........
- Phu-Khanh (2/5): - Check in process was straight-forward enough, however upon arriving and inspecting the room, found the bed sheet was stained and dirty, towards the end of the bed. Immediately call customer service, which was helpful in getting me relocated but upon leaving the property, saw a pest removal service coming in as well for another room was very concerning. The room itself is adjacent to the footpath and was slight lower too, if the blinds were open pedestrians would have very clear visibility in to your room.
- Maree (2/5): - The room was visibly dirty, the stench was nauseating and our feet stuck to the floor. Our code didn’t work and had to ring a number only to be put on hold. The caretaker then let us in
- Peter (8/5): - Really easy place to stay. Self check in was really easy and we enjoyed our stay!
- David (8/5): Like a low standard backpacker hostel - The accommodation was of a basic standard with no bedside lights, light not working, tv remote damaged, no off-street parking provided and generally dirty.
- Graham (6/5): Good value for money but building entry issues. - Clean and comfortable, good value for the price.
Only issue is access to the building.Stayed here a few times now and always have issues with the pin code entry to the building. Never an issue with the room door.
I have let in numerous other guests when my code has worked or I'm on the way out and they have let me in when my code does not work. It's frustrating when you are locked out and have to call a number to be let in and you then get a voicemail.
- Kerryn (8/5): - Property was surprisingly quiet. Bed was very comfortable. The front door code did not work and when i requested another code, it didnt work either - so another customer gave us their code - this was very inconvenient.
- Monica (2/5): - No reception- I did not receive instructions on how to enter the building or what to expect. i had to wait until after 2pm to get a code, i didnt get it so i then had to phone and request one, the 1st code sent to me didnt work. other people were stuck outside as their codes didnt work. i finally enter the facility, it smelt musky, the stairway was dirty. the room was clean. there was dirty linen outside doors in the hallway and when i got up the next morning there was a couple sleeping in the hallway. ?could get in there room.
- Arthur (6/5): Frustrating code system, limited parking - Contactless code entry, only entered the building 3 times and every time the code issued did not work so I had to ring and get a new code but new code didn’t work again next time, very frustrating especially when my wife was blind after a operation on the day. Also way more rooms than parking spots.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - good location
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Very unclean, do not stay here
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Room stunk of moisture, blankets on bed covered in stains. Floor had gross marks , had no sleep with all the yelling swearing and door slamming that went on from about 10:30pm to 5am. . Would never stay her nor recommend to people either .
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent property, secure with great kitchen facilities
- Simon (8/5): - Good
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Just OK to stay
Cockroaches in room 201
Up stairs room are fine
- Stephen (2/5): Never ever stay here - Terrible. Never stay again. If it wasn't for work I would not have stayed past the first night. Limited parking was just the first issue. As I walked into the room I was hit by an over powering smell. I found cigarette butts behind the desk, dust filled aircon filters that I was not game to turn on. All the doors made a loud bang as you closed them. People were smoking in the hallway at all hours, with no consideration of other guests of how loud they were.
- Sean (2/5): - Infested with bush and German cockroaches. TV didn’t work. Furniture and fittings were broken. Carpet and bathroom grubby. No bin at all. No chair for desk.
- Adboo (2/5): - The room was not cleaned properly. It had a potent smell that made me want to be sick, even whilst I was sleeping. The table had a white residue on it and the freezer had what looked to be red wine or blood dripped through it. I booked for two nights as I was travelling for work and I stayed the first night but couldn’t bring myself to stay the second night. I checked out, went to work and drove 2 hours home, then 2 hours back next morning as there was no other accomodation anywhere in Newcastle. Very disappointed.
- Renata (4/5): - The room wasn’t prepared so they changed me accomodation for another hotel 600m from the previous one. The place was ok, but wasn’t well cleaned once that I found cigarettes and cockroaches.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Room was fine, but car number plates were stolen! - It was very disappointing not about the room, but my car number plates were stolen off my car. I was parked right outside the front door of the Aspire and I thought this would be a safe place to park...wow, was I wrong!!!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - During night someone calling out n trying open our door, bit scary
- Trew (2/5): - Air con heater does not work tried to ring but it was after 5pm so NO AC. Loud staff member who loves the sound of her own voice broadcasting rubbish at 3 in thr morning over a 2way radio. Noisy echoes old crap building with nrw paint....if you wsnna get some rest and quiet dont bother with tjis s%@t hole
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Pleasant to stay
- Verified traveler (2/5): - I’ve never been forced to leave a review like this in my life. We arrived at our booking around 5pm and contacted the hotel to give us our code for the room, only to be told that the room we had booked and paid for wasn’t available. So they sent us to one of their other hotels just down the street, which only had one bed when we needed two. On top of all this there were dead cockroaches all over the floor, stained sheets, people smoking in the hallways and a fumigation going on that we kept breathing in as it came underneath the door. Picture of fumigation truck parked right outside our room attached. We didn’t stay the 3 nights we booked only 1 as we booked somewhere else the next day as it was not fit to stay in.
I was willing to let all this go as the hotel promised me a refund, the lady I spoke with multiple times promised me the refund was on its way but it never appeared. Finally another lady admitted to me it was never processed but said she will actually put it through this time and it should appear in 7 days. Not sure I believe that after being lied to already... if it doesn’t happen I will be taking this to fair trading.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything is perfect i liked this place Secure clean nice and tidy easy access
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Friendliness by permanent residence & quietness. Very clean, cleaning staff helpful & had a respect manner & central.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - No reception to be let in, no fresh towels for the next day rooms would only be serviced once a week 🤔😤staff on site couldn’t understand basic English
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The remote was missing for tv. Made call and received one immediately. Our mattress was a shocker. We could feel individual springs, making it very uncomfortable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Not luxury but clean and great value when you need a place to stay. Walking distance to supermarkets, restaurants and club, We will stay again.
- Unhappy (2/5): - I am very disappointed after a stay at Mayfield Aspire hotel. Unfortunately I didn’t read the reviews before booking- something I now deeply regret. The images that are depicted on wotif are in no way an accurate representation of the room I paid for. The room was extremely sparse, smelly and dirty. I understand that it is budget accomodation but to advertise it as ‘pleasant’ is completely inaccurate. I found nothing pleasant about my stay! I had booked for two nights due to having work related appointments in the area, however, I vacated the room after one night as I did feel safe or comfortable at Aspire and had to find alternative accommodation for the next night.
As stated, I was extremely disappointed and decided to contact Aspire via email to which I didn’t even received a reply!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - No reception was a bit different
The car park is around the corner and bit out of the way.
Would not stay on my own !
- D.A. (8/5): - Cheap, clean and convenient but our queen room's bed was a double, there was one chair for two people, nor bowls for breakfast and somewhere below our upstairs room laundry machines churned all night.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It is spread out nicely you cant hear your neigboura
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Poor quality. Limited supplies. Smelt like cigarette smoke. Shower screen broken. Blinds fell off.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - There are limited car parks. We parked along the street as long as we didn't block any houses there.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Everything was perfect. The only thing I could fault was the lack of cutlery.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The rooms smell like cigarette smoke which is a shame as location is great and amenities are ideal.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean n quiet will stay again bf slept the whole night
- Kat (6/5): - There was a baggie of used cigarette butts hidden in a cupboard I only found on the second night! Room stank!
- Meththa (2/5): - We booked this to explore New Castle area and we our experience was really bad. There was no communication on check-in till last hour with Wotif not even confirming the booking and putting a disclaimer (after taking money from my bank instantly). There was no communication at all. Car Parking was not offered as an option when booking was done and was forced to do street/unsafe parking. Though there was a common kitchen, there were no enough pots and pans. Hence, couldn't use it. There were very noisy guests speaking loud in the common area and the noise was travelling well into the room. Every time someone else closes their doors, it makes a big noise and feels like our room door was banged. This woke up as early in the morning. Overall, i would not recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a quiet time.
- Doug (2/5): Find somewhere else! - Dirty, spartan and slightly dodgy are words I would use to describe this place. All surfaces, chairs and bathrooms were dirty.
- Patrick (8/5): Overnight stay at Aspire - Easy check in and clean rooms. Fast internet also and vending machine on premise.
- Richard (8/5): - Nice hotel but not much to do around the area. Check in and check out was extremely efficient. The room was clean. The double bed was made up of 2 smaller beds that weren't joined together properly. The TV did not have a remote control and the kettle did not work
- R (4/5): - The room was very basic - no cutlery, plates or glasses etc even though a kitchen is outlined as part of the facilities. Sheets were dirty in the room. Other guests were screaming and fighting at 2am.
- jwff (6/5): - Close to Train and buses. rooms are nice. this time i had faulty lamp and remote control would not work.
- Verified traveler (2/5): poorly kept room - Poorly kept room, shower door was broken, was pictures that kids drew over the walls and there was no space at Ll in the bathroom
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Was convenient to where we needed to be.
Hallway smelt of cigarette otherwise our room was very clean
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Do you room to wasn't too bad all of the rest of the building was dirty and smelly
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Close to civic performance area, where we attended a performance involving a family friend.
- Bazgoo (8/5): Simple, clean, modern and cheap. It's fine. - After I booked this at short notice at a bargain price I read the reviews. I was expecting some low rent, dirty, smelly dump. The place was very clean, my room was spotless, looked like fresh reno. Nice bathroom, bed comfy etc... I paid $90 for a Saturday night, same room with a chain easy another $40 to $50. Way better than budget Ibis. What you need to know is there is no reception - you let yourself in with codes. If we were staying a few days and wanted to save $, this would be a good option as there is a shared kitchen area with a big fridge and hotplates, so you could self cater. I feel like some of the negative reviews might be from competitors as I found it fine, and I'm pretty fussy. Fantastic coffee at nearby Portafilter (same street, walk out, turn left, opposite side of road 100 metres)
- Verified traveler (2/5): Appalling Service - Avoid - The rooms offer a modern and functional bathroom with shower, basin and toilet, but lacks a bath towel rack. There is a kitchenette with good cupboard space, bar fridge and high-quality inverter. The double bed, built in robes and work desk and chair make up the generous fittings. The high-speed Wi-Fi is the best I have experienced in Australia.
On the downside, the office chair at the desk was broken and it took three phone calls to get it changed the next morning with inane comments from the two staff members consulted like, “Please call back later”, “I’ve been really busy” and “I’m still waiting for the maintenance man” who when he finally arrived, kindly unlocked the windows that open only about 4cm and had ensured no fresh air in the room for the past fourteen hours.
There is no management on site between about 5pm and 9am. Issues are referred to a night operator who takes notes and e-mails the day staff. There was a litany of issues. The kitchenette is all but useless. Apart from tea and coffee, the utensils consist of two non-matching cups and saucers, two non-matching wine glasses and two non-matching tumblers, all of which had to be washed properly before use, a teaspoon and dessert spoon. There is no breakfast bowl, microwave dish, knives or forks. The sink has no plug nor is any dishwashing liquid, brush or scourer offered. On one day there was no housekeeping.
Give this one a miss.
- Gail (6/5): Pleasant and clean
The hotel was pleasant - The hotel was pleasant. I think the previous occupants were smokers, which was a downside. I am not sure if they have non smoking rooms. No staff on duty but the room had been cleaned well and sheets and towels were lovely and fresh. The freezer was frozen solid, but I had a good time. Most affordable accommodation and good follow up service when I called to enquire if the fridge was working.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - There is budget then there is Aspire. Stained floors, sticky floors, rubbish in hall ways, malodourous. Parking for 6 cars and 20 plus rooms.
A notice in the bathroom requesting you to re-use your towel but no where to hang it??? Room did not get refreshed anyway.
A bath mat would have been nice.
A bed side lamp would have been handy or at least 2 way switching on the lights.
The towels and linen were good.
Overall just disappointing, it could be good with just a little attention.
- ems (8/5): - Was very good, shared areas were trashed by other guests but was cleaned up very fast by staff who apologised to us - was very nice of them also to offer us extra towels - heating+ AC was also great as well as the check in txt and door codes
- Verified traveler (8/5): Location close to buses and woolies - Rooms only serviced one morning out of 3. Comfortable. Kitchen good but no crockery or cutlery in room
- Nick (6/5): Disappointed - Overall the room was ok.
However bed was not made whilst we were there and the hallway and cleanliness left a lot to be desired
- Lisa (6/5): Family night away - It was clean and tidy, but unfortunately the beds were uncomfortable and the room small and basic. Price was cheap but I had expected more.
