- Simone (10/5): A very special experience - This accommodation in The gorgeous town of NozawaOnsen is run by a Japanese family. They make the most elaborate vegetarian meals which were amazing. The rooms were spacious and the bathroom was compact, but perfect. The decor was try to a family that has lived in the building for many generations. They were so welcoming I felt like family.
I communicated with Midori with google translate as I could not speak Japanese. I hope to come again.
- Natty (10/5): Perfect - Our host was incredibly helpful and kind. Our view from room 304 was incredible and such a beautiful cozy and comfortable stay. On arrival a lovely dinner was prepared and so delicious. Very happy! Will stay again! Thank you :)
- Jan (9/5): It was a great stay, I felt well supported and breakfast was fantastic. - It was very cosy and well looked after by the staff. Showers we too small and shower spout was broken, so taking a shower was challenging.
- alan (7/5): - Convenient location, 7 minute walk to Chuo shuttle bus station Gas fired heating in the room
- Melissa (10/5): Cozy stay -
- karen (9/5): Loved our stay. - Comfortable spacious Japanese accommodation. Walking distance to the centre of town and bus station. Loved the vegetarian Japanese breakfast. The family run business was very welcoming.
- Bundarik (9/5): - This is a lovely guesthouse with only a few rooms. The owner is wonderful and provided excellent service, even though they didn't speak much English, it wasn't a problem at all. The rooms are clean and have en-suite bathrooms with bathtubs. The breakfast was vegetarian and tasted good. If you're here for skiing, it's a bit far from the gondola, but it's still walkable without any problem. And if you bring your own car, there is parking available, but you need to inform the owner in advance so they can prepare a parking space for you.
- Mark Harold Cabang (9/5): -
- Xi (10/5): homely and nice place to chill after a long day of skiing - breakfast was amazing and made me reimagine vegetarian food, room was also kept very clean all 4 nights was located on top of a hill by quite minor as it is only a hassle on rhe first day when pushing up luggages
- Martha (10/5): Hoping to come back to this lovely nurturing hotel. - So cosy, comfortable and clean. Lots of character with every need catered for Nothing
- Karla (9/5): Nice little homey hotel in central nozawa onsen - Nice little homey hotel in central nozawa onsen.
Walking distance to multiple onsens.
The hotel itself has an indoor bathhouse and the room has a bath as well.
Was always warm inside despite snowing outside.
It’s a very quiet hotel, we didn’t really see any other guests or staff during the entire stay.
- angie (10/5): Totally perfect. Highly recommended. - The location, the lovely staff & delicious food. I even checked in an hour early. Beautiful unique experience x It was perfect
- Marie (9/5): - Établissement agréable. Très bons repas. Un peu en dehors du centre.
- 鶴谷 (8/5): よかった - 施設が清潔で静か 特にないが、温泉があったら最高
- Marco (9/5): Accogliente - Cena e colazione molto buone ! Strada di accesso molto complicata ma l’auto l’ha parcheggiata il gentilissimo proprietario dell’hotel
- Bartosz (10/5): Exceptional - The vegetarian dinner was absolutely amazing (and the breakfast too)! Very close to a bunch of the town's free onsens too! Nothing to complain about, very much recommend!
- Higham (10/5): Exceptional - Very welcoming, beautiful location, and some of the best food we have eaten in our Japan trip. The effort put into these meals is outstanding and we loved the room with the futons and view of the river. Highly recommended and I hope we can come back.
- Sian (9/5): Traditional and very cosy. Vegetarian food was excellent. - This is a lovely property run by a family. The vegetarian food was excellent. The accommodation was very comfortable, it feels a little bit like you are staying in their house. The owners were very helpful. Lots of space in the room but like most Japanese accommodation not a lot of storage.
- Paul (8/5): The bird lady of Nozawa Onsen - Great location for skiiing/snowboarding at Hikage area. Comfortable 10m walk from Yu Road, moving walkway. At least 3 onsens within 5m walk, liquor store and pizza restaurant across road, local restaurants 5m walk. Unfortunately we chose not to eat at accommodation due to owner's birds being let out between meals to fly around dining room. Tatami matting and futon bedding, large room, warm. Compressor downstairs or outside kicks in and out roughly half hourly during the night, gentle noise but there. Amazing value for money, no English spoken/understood. Good luck getting a booking!
- Christina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emma (10/5): Amazing stay, cosy rooms and delicious food - We absolutely loved our stay at Hatoguruma Kawabata! I feel lucky we got to stay here. The food was AMAZING - if you don't manage to secure accommodation, I would still recommend trying to book a dinner here. For vegetarians, it is a feast, so delicious. The room was really cosy, with a low table and chairs, and tatami floors. My husband had to stack two mattresses to get comfortable but that was fine as there were spares in the wardrobes. We had mountain views from our window - stunning! It was lovely and quiet, and there was a heater that worked well. The hosts were so kind and welcoming. And we loved using the baths in the basement level - a treat after a long day on the slopes! Highly recommended to stay here.
- Ian (9/5): Superb -

- Titikorn (9/5): Superb - Big room and nice owner. Vegan
- Caroline (10/5): It doesn't get better than here - I loved absolutely everything. The room was kept nicely with a view of the slopes. As a vegan, I'm not used to being accommodated, let alone the delicious feast that I got for breakfast and night. Do yourselves a favour and book food as well as board - they take such care with these meals and they're delicious. The staff were lovely and kind, and were happy to chat to me - I don't know if they speak English though. I cannot fault this place, the nicest place I've stayed in Japan.
- Melissa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Melissa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hayden (8/5): Charming stay - Charming hotel, run by lovely family. A bit further that what maps suggest, have to navigate a steep slope.
- Philipp (10/5): Exceptional - Everything is perfect.
- Ming (8/5): Will go again - Very good location with reasonable price, kind host
- Andrew (9/5): Homely pleasant stay with unbelievably good vegetarian meals - A wonderfully warm and homely feel, with real warmth and friendly care that makes your stay feel relaxed and enjoyable.
A simple and humble place, but you feel like you've entered a warm and functional traditional Japanese home. If you pay attention to the details you'll notice the thought and care the host has put into thinking to make your stay comfortable.
Having an extraordinary vegetarian meal to look forward to after a long day on the slope was perfect. Nothing really, while we had a pleasant quiet stay, the walls seem fairly thin if that bothers some.
- Dewi (9/5): Wonderful - Spacious room, has bathroom and nice view The toilet is cold and does not have function like typical Japanese toilet (warm toilet seat, bidet, etc)
- Mariko (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bradley (10/5): Exceptional - The staff was so friendly!
- Derek (9/5): Superb -
- Nattaphol (8/5): Recommend for ski trip - - The room size is quite big and has enough space for big luggages and ski stuff.
- Clean room and internal bathroom.
- The location is great, close to a few public onsens and restaurants. Walkable to both gondolas, 900m but not bad, everyone did.
- Parking is a bit hard to access but OK enough for this small village.
- Generous and very helpful owners
- No refrigerator but you can use small window balcony instead (colder than refrg.). - A bit dusty on japanese futon, but there is a common for every japanese style hotel. (But it still clean anyway)
- Ayuna (8/5): Very good -
- Zac (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (8/5): Very good -
- Lucy (9/5): Lovely traditional Japanese stay. Excellent location - Excellent location - very central and able to walk to all restaurants. 15 minute walk to gondola.

- Meredith (10/5): Beautiful location and wonderful family who works here. We loved it so much - Hatoguruma Kawabata is wonderfully located in Nozawa Onsen. We were easily able to take a very short walk to enjoy several onsens and within walking distance to any of the others. We were also able to walk to any of the other sites as well as the ski lifts. Nothing! This is a beautiful place and I would absolutely stay here again.
- Kylie (8/5): Will return, loved our stay - Great location, amazing breakfast and wonderful staff Nothing, everything was great and will return
- Li-ann (8/5): Very good -
- Kylie (9/5): Cost and quaint, welcoming and close to restaurants - The staff were so welcoming and friendly. It is close to restaurants and can walk up to the escalator to smaller gondola.
- Jason (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bonnie (9/5): Superb -
- Vivian (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing and accommodating staff and service. Great value. Good location. Nothing. Was amazing.
Just note there are some stairs to get to your room.
- Keely (10/5): Excellent. Would stay again. - The hosts were extremely helpful and welcoming. The room was cleaned every day. The complimentary breakfast was delicious. The room was a good size for 2 people and had a great view. The beds were slightly uncomfortable after a few nights.
- Anthony (10/5): Exceptional - Family run and one of the best stays I've ever had.
- Sophie (10/5): The people running it care so much about their place. A true gem and a must stay - Never seen anything so clean, spacious for Japan accomodation and such a kind host.
- Taylor (8/5): Authentic Japanese accommodation in stunning Nozawa Onsen - Authentic Japanese accommodation in beautiful Nozawa Onsen
Friendly helpful staff Our teenagers found the thin floor mattresses uncomfortable
- Adeline (10/5): Excellent Host & Location - I've injured my leg while skiing. Midori, the female host, was so kind to offer to drive me and my child to the bus stop and assisted with our luggages on the day we left. She also made lovely vegetarian meals! We will return for sure 🥰👍 Nothing. All was good.
- Jessica (10/5): Exceptional - The most incredible meals of my trip to Japan! What a delight. I can't wait to return, hopefully with more Japanese language skills so that I get to know even more about the area and my lovely host. Thank you so much for such a wonderful visit!

- Sara (10/5): Vegetarian feast in an adorable village - Warm and friendly, with delicious vegetarian food. Cute town with very few summer tourists. Beautiful hikes, temples and onsens.
- Nora (10/5): Lovely family-run inn with vegetarian meals - Lovely little family-run inn in Nozawa Onsen. We stayed in a tatami room, with a small but very clean full bathroom. The location is great for the town, hikes, and several public bathhouses, and were provided with yukata for walking around town to the baths. The dinner and breakfast were vegetarian, with lots of egg and tofu as well as meat substitutes (she can also make vegan if requested).
- Steven (10/5): A quick ski adventure , and loved staying with you. - A beautiful hotel/ryokan, run by a lovely couple / family. Comfortable beds, cool vintage decor, great value for money and a convenient location.
- Pauline (9/5): Superb -
- Michelle (10/5): Great stay ran by a family - Such a pleasant experience, the family that runs this place offers breakfast daily and dinner for extra. It was totally worth the money. The meals were made me feel so good after eating them. The room itself had a private bathroom and nice details
- Loic (9/5): Superb - This was our second time here, our first stay was in 2017. Very nice host, comfortable and spacious room (for Japan :). They could accommodate an extra bed free of charge for our son. Delicious meals but vegetarian only. Good location. Nothing to complain about.
- Bruna (10/5): Exceptional - A great surprise that our room had a fantastic view of the ski slopes and mountains. Staff were very friendly and accomodating, felt homely and so nice to experience a bit of the Japanese culture.

Excellent traditional breakfast and dinners (dinners are booked separately). Easy 10min walk to travellator..past onsens, shrines and traditional buildings. I worried having to pay in cash...but hotel is now accepting credit cards

The private bathroom was a real plus, as well as the yukata provided by the lodge. Lovely and welcoming hosts, and ideal location. I loved the light sound of water/river by the hotel, it's a very soothing and calming music to me. Would come back next year, if there's any room available !

- Chris (10/5): Exceptional - Very well run family Ryokan. Extremely clean. Breakfast was vegetarian but you would hardly notice it was so delicious and plentiful.
- Carl (10/5): Only two nights, but so satisfying we will go again - Exceptionally helpful owner operators
- Carmen (9/5): Love the hospitality and authentic meals! - The service was excellent and so helpful. The breakfast was delicious! It is not that I didn’t like it but would have been even better if the towels were thicker but that is NOT a complain.
- Yu-ling (9/5): Definitely value for the money. - Less than 5 mins away from the bus station. Small but cozy, clean, comfortable, with helpful staffs. Nothing really to dislike but for older travelers, you will need to pull your luggage up a small hill to reach the hotel. No elevator in the hotel, so will need to carry your luggage up the stairs to the 2nd floor where all the rooms are located. But no big deal for younger travelers.
- Jacob (8/5): Value for money - close the action, free parking, a small sitting area in the room with welcome tea by the owner

- Tan (10/5): Perfect and wonderful stay. Thank you Hatoguruma Kawabata! - Beautiful scenery and view from the hotel and room view. Apart from the slope (only because we have stroller) else it's a short walk from everywhere to/from the hotel.
The biggest plus for this hotel is the private toilet for us. But amazingly everything was perfect.
The owner and staffs are very friendly and helpful, the room neat, tidy, cosy and clean. They do cleaning daily.
We also ate the special vegetarian dinner meal prepared by them and it's fantastic.
We enjoyed our stay and will definitely come back again if we are in Nozawaonsen!
Thank you Hatoguruma Kawabata for the perfect memory! :)
- Jeremy (9/5): This is a cozy and authentic hotel with lovely staff and delicious food :) - The breakfasts were vegetarian, different every morning, and delicious. Location is excellent, very easy to walk to onsen, Yu-road, restaurants and fire festival. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Rooms were very cozy, quiet and warm It is old style accomodation which was very simple and comfortable and a lovely experience. Bathrooms were a little small but actually ok for Japan.
