Guest Reviews
- HenriLai (8/5): -
- Damian (7/5): Brilliant rustic authentic - Staff were excellent & the meals (breakfast+ dinner) were really great with a different Japanese style each night. Easy to get to the lifts & plenty of parking. Strange combination of heaters in the room, didn't like the heater exhaust smell.
- Philip (10/5): -
- Maurice (10/5): - The Japanese food for dinner was exceptional. The last meal was the best Japanese meal I have had on this trip.
- Toh (8/5): -

- Terence (9/5): Fab value in a traditional Inn/lodge/Ryokan. Highly recommended true Japanese experience. - Breakfast and Dinner were incredibly good value and convenient.
This is a deliberate re visit of this place, was here last year.
This is located in Suginosawa/Suginhara, which is a little out of the way (without a car) but at the best ski area in Myoko. Not an issue with Soratobu Usagi, but the Myoko tourism/skiing body, The cost 1000 yen for a ski bus ride each way is a little steep! Compared to Nozawa Onsen which is free/included in ski lift pricing. Hope the overall tourism management of this area will consider incorporating the transport into the cost of the ski/lift tickets.
At this end as opposed to the Akakura Onsen end, seems to be neglected by the tourism office with regards to public transport. It's inconvenient to try get to the likes of Tangram, Madrao or even Lotte Arie by public transport.
- Lisa (6/5): Basic but pleasant. - Very helpful and kind staff, ski in/ski out location is great. Very basic, cramped (even for Japan) rooms that were not well-equipped.

- Brendon (8/5): Large room, great place, but a hike to get to rentals - Very large room with a great onsen Mattresses are really thin and no pillows. Bit of a hike up to rentals
- Laura (8/5): - The location was great, right next to the skilift. The room was clean and the staff very friendly. The lodge had a small kitchenette to cook. The downstairs one-bedroom apartment smelled so mouldy that I had to check out early. I'm highly sensitive to indoor mould, so I smell it very easily. There is no visible mould. If you are not sensitive to indoor mould, you'll probably be fine staying in this room. But if you are mould sensitive, then I recommend booking a room in the main lodge or upstairs.
- Dirk (10/5): Value for money and location! - Location location!
Great family morning breakfast every day
- Hale (10/5): - Fantastic experience across the board. Wish we stayed longer
- Tomas (10/5): -
- ruiwen (9/5): -
- hsiao yuan (10/5): - Ski in and out , comfortable room, public bath nice (kids and I are very comfortable to stay here)
- Luke (8/5): Great little ski lodge. Highly recommend. - We stayed in one of the lodges. It was great. very roomy and had views of the ski field and mountains. Well positioned for a skiing holiday! There was a little kitchen and washing machine. The wifi wasn’t working in our lodge, parking wasn’t amazing. Breakfast could do with a little improvement.
- Lucy (7/5): -
- Edouard (8/5): Une belle immersion japonaise!
- Damian (10/5): - I love this place!
I love the staff I love the food I love it's location.
- Spiros (5/5): -
- ryouta (8/5): -
- Katrina (10/5): Brilliant place to stay and enjoy skiing - Ski down to chair lift, or very manageable walk up to Gondola (which we didn't do till last day but should have from start). Dinner was great, breakfast was good. Great value overall. When staying in some accommodation (we stayed in family room) it was a 50m walk to the main building for meals and breakfast, ski locker, Onsen.
- Jimmy (9/5): Great location. Comfortable stay. Delicious food. - The staff was really nice and the food wonderful. I wish they offered pick-up/drop-off from the station but a taxi wasn’t that expensive so no big deal. It’s an old building but that adds to the charm.
- David (9/5): It’s no Hilton but value for money is exceptional, quite place with beautiful views from the rooms, feels very old schoo - Onsen bathroom, ski in ski out, delicious dinner
- Garrod (9/5): - Short slip down the hill to lower lifts at Suginohara. 1min drive to Suginohara ticket office. Warm, clean, great food & nice host family made for a great stay.
- Jesse (7/5): -
- Jesse (7/5): - Location and staff Cold, heaters smell like kerosene
- Gallagher (9/5): -
- Annie (10/5): Highly recommend - We stayed in the holiday house (for our family of four), and it honestly exceeded our expectations for the price point. The facilities were basic but everything we needed, the house had bath/shower, washing machine, toilet and little kitchen. Simple but comfortable futon bedding up in the loft. The location was second to none, ski down to the lift and easy to pop back in for lunch. Recommend having a car (4wd preferably) if staying here as not much around. No wifi in the house but you can walk the 50m odd to the lodge if you need it. This was perfect for our family, highly recommend!
- HON MING (6/5): Good location but with bugs issues - Ski in ski out convenient location, staff are friendly too Many bugs and insects especially during the night time, fly around and even on beds and pillows 🥲
It was better the next day after we told the staff and they sent someone to further clean the room.
And no wifi in our house as its only available in main building. I was okay with it but my friends were desperately craving for it
- Siu Man (9/5): -
- Siu Man (9/5): -
- Bradley (9/5): Great stay, will be back. - Great vibe and ski in/out. Breakfast and dinners were fantastic. Traditional tatami mattresses and pillows were thin and westerners may find uncomfortable.
- Masny (8/5): -
- oliver (8/5): Hosts so helpful and friendly, i loved this place -
- Kieran (10/5): -
- Kasper (10/5): friendly and warm family feel in perfect location - perfect location and super friendly family that runs the place. Beds are Japanese styles which you just need to embrace.
food is traditional Japanese and delicious, beers in restaurant and the view of the falling snow is to die for :)
- Mamlas73 (9/5): Great place to stay, food was really good! Location is also very good :) - Breakfast and dinner were amazing, no complaints at all Not a fan of the Japanese style pillows, but other than that everything was great. I recommend having a car if ur going to stay there so you can easily go to other resorts.
- Wendy (8/5): -
- JyunJie (8/5): - 1.
- SUNGHO (5/5): No pick-up service - It needs a pick-up service to Myoko Kogen Station.
Taxis are too expensive, and the buses are too small, making it very difficult to carry ski bags or large suitcases.
- Ambareen (7/5): Great for skiing break - A good location for skiing with good accommodation for a small single family as only one shared room or a group of 3-4 friends at best . Be ready to rough it a bit. The bedding was Japanese style mattresses with clean sheets and beanbag pillows. Effective heating despite a bitterly cold evening . A long distance from Nagano and the local train station. Bathroom was small and a not so great kitchen. We left after 1 night having paid for 2. There is NO shop or any option for any supplies near the accomodation or within walking distance. There is food available from the place but no idea as the food for our night was described as "used pork!" We brought our own supplies as the hotel recommended that strongly.
- Nicole (10/5): Perfect traditional Japanese experience - I loved everything about the property! The proximity to the Sugi resort chairlift was so convenient. The staff were so kind and generous with their time to ensure our stay was excellent and memorable There was no negatives at all. So many bathrooms, and a women’s and men’s spa which was wonderful. The food was wonderful, great value and variety. Our room was very spacious and so clean and comfortable.
- Yuzhen (8/5): Nice ski lodge close to the ski lift, And there’s a bus not too far - Close to the suginohara station, cute house, nice home feeling, has everything you need for a good ski trip. Dinners good, staff are nice Facilities can be improved
- William (10/5): - Clean and easy, lovely hosts
- Grant (6/5): Location, very helpful, but basic facilities - Typical minshuku/lodge in the mountains, but this one is right next to the ski run, so you can just slide down to the bottom lift (or snowboarders - just walk up to the gondola, its about 10 mins, you'll get there faster!) No need for shuttles!
(you can get to and from the train station using the cheap community bus, if time not an issue)
Staff - Utako very helpful and great at multitasking even when its busy. They really try hard to sort everyone out - just be patient as English is difficult for them, and your accent doesn't help ;-)!
If there is enough snow, easy to ski home right to the door - but careful of cars using the same lanes/carparks. the breakfast / dinner room has a nice view (I didnt eat there though) Stayed twice, 2 different buildings (there are several in the complex) Just be aware - the buildings are old and poorly insulated. Neither room I had was relaxing - thin walls/ceiling so other guests kept me awake even if they were just walking around. If you can put up with that you will be fine for a night. Earplugs?.
There are only a few eating options in the village nearby, not particularly good value, although the restaurant at the gondola base (upstairs) is very generous and tasty (last order 3pm!)
- Ruth (10/5): Probably the most enjoyable family stay we have experienced, it will be a great memory forever - The food was outstanding and the owners and staff went above and beyond to help us in every way they could. Yet also allowed us privacy and freedom to enjoy their beautiful lodge and feel at home It is just a very small silly Westerner problem but the mattresses did take a little getting used to being so thin. In saying this though by the end of our stay I was enjoying the harder floor for my back and body. Probably a healthier way to sleep than what we are used to in our country
- Terence (10/5): Great value accomodation and meals in Suginohara/Suginsawa area. Ski in/out conditions permitting. - The Staff were fantastic as were the meals, Breakfast and Dinner. This is located outside of the main Akakura tourist area and without a car can be a little difficult getting to Akakura, but having 2 meals per day catered for (Optional extra) is highly recommended. You couldn't get the same value else where in a restaurant and it's on site. Bravo on the convenience and quality of food. Congratulations on such a service to your customers.
- Sonia (3/5): Disappointing. - Amazing location - ski-in-ski-out. Could be a gem if someone took it over. Very old place, needs a lot of care and attention to detail. Had to pay for towels.
- Trish (9/5): Superb - Excellent location. Good accommodation near ski lifts, friendly staff, good breakfast. Beds futons on the floor which is ok for a few days. We had two rooms and a bathroom on our floor which worked perfectly. Great Ladies onsen on the very ground floor.
- Dean (10/5): Exceptional - My fav place to stay in sugi, love the meals and location, family is amazing
- Jianbang (5/5): Passable - the location, very close to the ski field soundproof, I can hear very clearly at night if anyone in any room is walking
- Man (10/5): Highly recommended, very resonable price for the stay - The breakfast and dinner are very delicious.
Can ski in and out directly from cottage. Very convenient. 4WD car is needed in winter, as the road is covered with snow....
- Stephanie (9/5): Superb - My only wish would to have a toilet available on each floor. We had to walk quite a way and down some stairs to the toilet at night which was not ideal. I’d recommend Asking to be in a room on the same floor as a toilet
- Andrea (8/5): Would stay again. - Location was excellent. Great food and lovely hosts. We appreciated access to shared kitchen and onsen. Rooms were a decent size. The only downside is that we were in the downstairs area and this was cold especially when nights were very cold.
- Lachlan (9/5): Superb - Excellent dinner
- Ahmad (10/5): A must stay if you're at suginohara - Dry room very spacious. Ski in ski out. Has its own onsen Nothing.
- Daniel (9/5): Superb - Exceptionally helpful and kind staff, excellent meals and very good value for money. Fantastic location to ski from.
- Dayanmarie (10/5): Super close from the slopes! - If you into snowboarding/ski, this is a great location for that! The staff were amazing! Huge onsen! My husband’s Land Cruiser got stuck in a ditch and they helped my husband with the crazy situation and we are very grateful with them! The place is ok; room is nice, big, and warm but the rest of the house was very very cold. It also feels like a labyrinth, I was constantly getting lost.
- Leanne (6/5): Great service and food but very tired facilities - The meals were very good, both nutritious and interesting for breakfast and dinner. The onsen were very soothing. The staff were very good and helpful. The facilities are old and it is a bit of a labyrinth to get around. The shared spaces were very cold. Our room was quite noisy being directly under the dining room and it was quite drafty.
- Sonny (5/5): Good food and excellent location. Questionable bedding. No amenities whatsoever. - Breakfast and dinner were outstanding. Location is perfect - ski-in/ski-out. The pre-fitted green bed sheets had visible stains on them. 1 clean white sheet were given per person, but you'll have to choose whether to use it on the duvet, which had no covers, or on the beds. It's survivable, and if necessary, I will stay again, but the lodge felt like a (hiking) mountain hut rather than a 2-star hotel (as per Google/booking.com's hotel rating).
- Damian (10/5): Exceptional - Some of the best service I've ever had from staff, such amazing people and so accommodating.
The food they prepared for me was incredible and authentic, they catered for my vegan diet and I was that impressed.
Super close to the main chair lifts walking distance for sure.
- Dorothee (7/5): Good -
- Fabiane (6/5): Pleasant - The location was perfect, right down the slopes, and the room was big enough for our size group (6).
The hotel also has a restaurant, and the owner was very kind preparing a Vegan option for me to dinner in. Too cold, besides our room and the restaurant area, just one toilet has heater, the other areas were super cold, was quite freezing leave the hot spring(they have one in the hotel) to a freezing changing room, and the area they call kitchen, is freezing cold and isn’t a real kitchen, just a small electric stove, that barely works, lol. But to be fair it has a kettle, oven, microwave and fridge, but was impossible to eat there due to the cold.
- Kristi (10/5): Favorite Place in Japan! - We had an AMAZING time at Soratobu Usagi! The location is awesome. We truly enjoyed the ski-in/ski-out location. We did a bit of research and were able to reach it by train and bus from Nozawa Onsen.
The team made everything super easy for us from snowboard rentals to lift tickets. The onsen in the basement is so relaxing and a real highlight. Everything was very clean and we felt very comfortable and cozy. We speak zero Japanese but they were very willing to help us with everything. We ate most our meals there and everything was SO good! We hit some powder days which was a nice bonus as well. We would definitely stay here again and recommend you to book it now!
- Milan (7/5): Good -
- Masaki (6/5): Good stay for skiing - The bath is large and comfortable. It’s Slightly old
- Ethan (10/5): Double burger - The location to sugi mountain was unreal and the staff were so accommodating. Very good food. Especially the double burger Only thing is if you would like to travel the area a little more. I advise getting a car. We used taxi and it is quite the mission to arrange.
- Swain (8/5): Very good -
- Dean (9/5): Superb -
- Dorothee (7/5): Good -
- Daniel (8/5): Convenient and fun - Soratobu Usagi was a cool place that reminded me a bit of a treehouse or a clubhouse. Its got a bit of a strange layout; kind of labyrinthine with many different floors; but I like the Alpine wood decor and the view of the slopes is great. Great location right on the slopes and good breakfast and dinner food available. There's a very hot shared bath, which doesn't have much ambience but it is nice hot and clean. I had a cool upstairs room that was quite big and felt like an attic space in a cool way, with nice views of the slope. The man who runs the desk was accommodating and helpful. My room did overlook the dining room which made for some noise, but this wasn't a big problem because I ate at the same times. If you want to sleep in late you might want to request a downstairs room. A bit hard to get to other places at night after the lift stops running without a car, but fine if you are just there to ski. Have to go up and down stairs alot so might not be good for people with mobility issues.
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jessie (9/5): Superb - The location was perfect for ski in/out for suginohara runs for our family of 4. The meals provided at the hotel were lovely and really great portions. The family running the hotel was great, so helpful. Thanks for a lovely stay, we hope to return.
- David (10/5): Exceptional - The owner and staff were very helpful and the location was very close to the ski resort lift. They provided a lovely meal every night, a different mix of Japanese food and western food. The price was cheaper than if were to go out to dinner.
- Jeffrey (7/5): Good -
- Paweł (8/5): Traditional Japanese house with great hosts, food, hot bath and easy access to slopes -
- Jan (9/5): Superb -
- Simon (8/5): Fantastic stay. We loved it and would stay again. Thanks to our kind hosts! - The proximity to the skifield was great.
Loved having the onsen on site.
Great drying room.
Meals were nice and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The mattresses in the room were too firm for us.
The snow clearing very in the morning was very loud. But at least that meant there had been lots of snow!
- Paul (6/5): Been there, done that but won’t be back - The food was good. Location was very good to get to and from the ski runs The bed mats were uncomfortable and the noise from the room next door and room above made sleeping difficult
- M. (8/5): A good value for money hotel, very close to the slopes, with a good service, and okay food. - The hotel is very close to the slopes and you can ski in/out.
The service was good, the staff pleasant, and overall facilities a bit old, but clean and I enjoyed my stay here. I would have liked more information on how to go to Myoko Suginohara by public transport (with links to the official timetables, even if just in Japanese).
I would have liked more information on the price deductions if buying lift passes at the hotel.
Maintaining this information, season after season, on the main page of the hotel would be helpful.
- Adam (8/5): A family-run Japanese style lodge with everything you need in an excellent location. Very good value - Great location (ski in - ski out), friendly hosts, good food, good onsen, good drying room, coin laundry, communal kitchen, everything you need - and great value for money the communal areas especially on the basement level are unheated (v cold)
- Rachael (8/5): Very good - The staff were lovely, the room was good sized and breakfast was great. Was fantastic to be ski in/ski out. Good to have access to a small kitchen Located at Suginohara resort which didn’t have access to a supermarket or many restaurants and cost 1000 yen for a bus to get to Akakura or other resorts for these larger facilities.
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Anonymous (7/5): Good -
- Yen-sheng (7/5): Peaceful and quiet with great food. Great for back country people. - Staff were always super helpful. On-site onsen was amazing. Purchasable dinner was extremely good. Literally ski in ski out. Bind in and take a free trip up the pair chair lift and buy tickets! Breakfast was very nice also. The heating situation was not great. The oil burner required constant monitoring and wouldn’t turn off when temperature was reached and was hard to start. The room also felt like it was not insulated which made temperature management difficult. The blankets also triggered my friends allergies from dust probably.
the location makes it a little difficult to get to other resorts and food places but not impossible. For future readers, it’s around 3000 to Akakura Onsen
- Fabiana (8/5): Very good -
- Peter (10/5): Lovely owners, great food! - Owners were fantastic and the food was large portions and delicious. The weather was bad but the cabin was super comfortable. The stairs to the loft can be a little scary going to the toilet late as their is only 1 side with railing on it.
No wifi in the room but phone reception is good.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Very Nice Owners, VERY Cold Hotel - Everything was fine, except that any common area was freezing (could see your breath). The owners were very nice and I think this place would be fine in summer, but my stay in winter was very cold.
