Guest Reviews
- Michael (4/5): You get what you pay for - Definitely the most basic hostel I've stayed in.
There are no staff and no doors on the dorms so minimal privacy. There are three floors and you need to pass through every other dorm to get to the top floor. Therefore, if you're staying on the first or second floor, people will be passing through your room to get to the floors above.
Cockroaches were crawling about the shower/toilet area and showers unclean with broken doors on the cubicles.
I stayed on the top floor which had no A/C and was too warm to sleep (this was at the end of May so the weather was warm but not the peak of summer).
Good location in the centre of valetta but that's about the only plus point.
- Anni (2/5): - The worst hostel ever. The whole place smells like mold. I could not breath even when the window was open. Dormitory room on the 1st floor did not have a door, people were walking through the room to other floors.
- francesco (6/5): - Un po di tutto
- Nadia (8/5): WI-FI SUCKS BUT GREAT LOCATION - Place is clean but not vey comfortable. Wifi with a Very poor signal. Personnel was prompt to send someone to try to fix it but to no avail. Router is hidden and only first floor. Lounge area is very small. Only 3 bathrooms for the entire place.
- Eduardo (4/5): - I stayed at the Valletta Dormitory for 6 nights. Four of those night w/out hot water. I called twice, left a note for the caretaker, and emailed the property over the course of several days and was repeatedly told they were sending someone to fix it. I finally got a hold of Expedia who called the property directly before the issue was fixed.
The dormitory has no reception. And the address listed on the booking app is not the address of the actual dormitory. This you only learn by reading the find print in your emails- AFTER - you book.
Basic needs such as toilet paper, or a towel for the bathroom floors were unavailable. The toilet paper took 2 days to be refilled.
On my floor, there were 9 outlets- of which only 4 worked. The rest were broken or had no power running to them.
Each room had 1 floor fan, with the exception of the top floor that also had a ceiling fan (minimal air movement). As you can imagine this made it miserable with the heat and humidity.
The kitchen and small welcome area were clean. However without floor mats, the bathrooms quickly became dirty due to everyone stepping out of the shower wet. The doors also had peep holes which were stuffed with toilet paper. CREEPY
The lockers are not maintained and only a few were actually lockable. They are located on the first floor, and are not large enough to accommodate big suitcases. However for other smaller cases, bags, or shopping- they work. As expected- bring your own lock.
- Cristian (6/5): - Ok
- Verónica (2/5): - Its the worst place I have ever been, its so dirty, i arrived at 10 pm and my bed was not ready, It was used by other person.
They told me to pick any bed available, so I did, and during all the night something was bitting me, i think bedbugs. Its also full of drunk people with no respect, screaming, farting, etc. So disgusting. Dont ever go there.
- Kazunori (10/5): - Perfect except for another stayer who were very noisy even midnight.
- Guillermina (2/5): - There is no in-person 24/7 concierge service and the phone number that was provided was not responsive during the middle of the night when we got locked out of our hotel room and we had to sleep on the floor until morning.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Like sleeping in a cupboard! - We got moved to another room, above a restaurant on Merchant St. Room it was tiny, no natural ventilation. It was noisy too as above kitchen. I couldn't wait to get out of there. Shower was cold on arrival to at 4pm. Room needed a clean. Dust balls & hair bands under bed, mould needed bleaching in shower, & toilet rim very black.... paid nearly 100e for this ...
- Matteo (6/5): - The room itself is nice, clean, ok bed, maybe too little pillow but nothing a fold over wont fix. But the noise from other guest due to very little isolation from door was a bit annoying when I wanted to sleep.
- Angelo (8/5): Lovely House - Stayed one night all ok
Beware that the address is 114 St Nicholas St Valletta & not the office address.
The electric had gone out on the keypad which prevented our entry. We called the office & they came with a key. We waited for an hour for the issue to be sorted. The keypad was not lit up. Other than this incident of no ones fault it is good accommodation. Very easy to get to The Gut & Strait Street
- Ana (10/5): unexpensive And nice, heart of Valletta - The apartment is quite nice and beautifully located in Velleta. My trip was last minute, so there was some confusion, as the address that shows in the reservation is an office, and not easy to find. I arranged my transportation to that location and then had to walk all over to find , first the office and then the place. The staff was not too helpful. Also, there is no one at the place. I had a problem with the internet connection and had to walk back to the office to talk to someone about it. Otherwise, very nice.
A little noisy.
- Jenny (10/5): Good location, amazing service, spotless clean - The little lovely house hostal fulfilled all my needs, really affordable , single room, spotless clean , nice house , great location just two minute to at George square . Service was fantastic , I emailed customers services twice and they responded really quickly and assisted me with all my questions . They also allowed me to check in Earlier which was hugely appreciate it since my flight arrived very early. The instruction to arrive the hostal are perfectly given after booking , very clear , very efficient . Definitely recomended for those with low budget but looking for good quality
- M.H. (6/5): No fan - The first time I stayed in the VBL hostel, is was OK. Not the cleanest, but they do their best, and what can you expect for this money? Check-in was a bit bothersome (and seems to invite cheating); the fact that you may not meet any staff during your stay is a bit weird. I imagine that there are people who would treat the place better if they felt more welcome, more aknowledged.
Be that as it may: the bed was clean, the locker key was where is should be, and thouigh the room had no AC, the window was open and there was a moving fan wich covered most of the room. Kept me comfortable enough. I slept well, bt then again, I ususally do, no matter the circumstances.
However, the second time I stayed with them I was in another room, or maybe I should add some scare quotes around the word "room", because it was'nt really a room: It had no window, and there were only some heavy curtains between the beds and the staircase, to create some semblance of privacy. Read that again: no window, heavy curtains. Also, of course, no AC, and NOT EVEN A FAN THIS TIME.
It can get pretty hot and stuffy at night, in Valetta...
I did not slep well.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The hostel is a bit complicated to find. If you put in the hostel name on Google Maps, it will direct you to the office and not to the hostel dorms... I didn't know this and I wish the hostel were aware of this and would either inform about this in their emails, or if possible, have it changed on Google Maps. The good thing is that I got help from the emergency phone when I couldn't find the place, but I think it would've been nicer for the person on the other end of the phone if I wouldn't have had to call in the first place, i.e. if I had known about this. The bathrooms were clean and modern, but there were only three of them on the ground floor (as far as I'm concerned) for the whole hostel, so in the busy season it could possibly get crowded, plus if your bed is on the second floor, you have to go up and down between the floors to access them. There were no doors to the dorms, only a big partitioning curtain separating the beds from the hallway. This could potentially be unsafe, along with the fact that the hostel is never staffed. I only stayed for a night so I didn't have problems, but I do think that since there isn't even a door that you can lock for the 'room', lockers should not be charged for, as it should be a basic feature of a hostel to feel a sense of safety of being able to at least lock the room at night with your belongings. All in all, the hostel was clean and tidy, but these are points that could and should be improved.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Peter (8/5): Handy downtown Valletta if you don't mind paperwor - Room was ok. Somewhat awkward pre-registration and city-tax payment process, compounded by them initially including a cleaning fee which did not apply. Apart from that, communications were thorough and good, allowing for access and departure outside office hours (the apartment itself is not staffed). International power socket did not work for laptop charging, meaning a UK plug adaptor was essential. Location was very good for Valletta attractions and activities.
- Verified traveler (6/5): A VERY HOT PLACE IN THE SUMMER - The best thing about this place is its location. Otherwise, it has a lot of walk-through levels that get really-really hot during the summer, and there is NO air conditioner. If you don't buy a locker in advance, then you don't get it, and there could be some confusion about it. The best thing about this place is the service that people provide! They answer right away, and they even delivered a locker key to me about 11pm, after I wrote an email to them about 20 minutes earlier. Just amazing!
- Marina (8/5): - Very cozy small room hidden between streets of the old Valetta. You also have a kitchen there that you can use with almost anything you need (no microwave).
Minuses: the bed was too soft. And room is not really well maintained (water is running from the shower head, water is not going down etc). You also don't have anybody to fix your problems at the place. So as for me the price was too high.
- Jianping (8/5): - I stayed one night, the bedroom is ok. The bed is fine. I just have a recommendation for the owner of would be much better to place a door between the bathrooms/locker room and the living room so the uncomfortable moisture smell from the bathrooms could be stopped going to bedrooms. And to install a stronger ventilation in the bathrooms/locker room.
Special thanks to the manager for helping me to retrieve my goods I forgot.
- Jeremie (8/5): - Cleaning personal noisy in the morning
- Joyce (10/5): Nice place - Great location. Apartment was clean and comfortable. Staff were very helpful. Would definitely stay here again. Only problem was that the WiFi in my room did not work.
- Joyce (10/5): Loved staying here! - Great location and superb staff! They were willing to help me with everything I asked. The location was perfect. And the price was great! I’ll stay with them again if I return to Valletta...for sure!
- Thoma (10/5): Rekommenderas starkt! - Helt perfekt.
- Laflolon (6/5): Convenient for central Valetta but . . - Contact address wasn't the same as the hostel location - like other guests, I hadn't been told the hostel location, only the office location - some further distance away. The email giving the information only arrived after I had been to the office!
No soap or paper towels in the shower/wash room.
Wifi was intermittent or not working at all.
One of the two showers didn't seem to be working.
Rain had came through ceiling of upper bedroom so guests had to move.
But location good - very central - and you could hear for free the sound of classical music concerts in the adjacent monastery as the wall between the hostel and the monastery wasn't very thick - a bonus!
- JAHIR (10/5): Excellent stay - Execellent stay
- Phil (6/5): Not a hotel - Technically it's not a hotel; it's a self-catering room. Clean and tidy but sparse. Noise from the street is amplified - motorbikes are horrendous. Bathroom ventilator noisy and overruns. Given that there is no reception, no staff and no disabled access it is poor value for money. you can easily get better for the same price.
- Daniela (8/5): Nice - I wasn't looking for a real hostel so I was happy for this one. It was a quiet and confortable place. The only things that bothered me were the windows (you can't close them) and the presence light - and since I like to sleep in the dark, I had to use a eye band.
- Steve (6/5): Pretty cheap and nice location, nothing else - It is strange to not have any staff there ever, and leads to downsides ( another traveler wine me up at 7am because he couldn't figure out how to unlock the front door to get out). The floor was quite dusty and there's only one working shower for all the dorm beds. Since it is so small there is often nobody there (literally nobody), so if you are looking for the hostel social experience you'll be disappointed.
- Lauren (8/5): - Clean and great location. However, the lights are all motion, which is great coz it saves electricity, but they go off so quickly that every minute you have to activate the sensor or press the button. So in the bedrooms, you have to sit in the dark. There are lamps but they are European plus, but the sockets are UK socket, and as UK citizen I didn't have an EU - UK convertor.
- Torunn (4/5): Be aware - Be aware, this is not an ordinary hostel! I booked through hotels.com and expected everything to be as with a normal booking, I was not aware that this was very different. After booking I got and e-mail with a form I had to fill out for the booking to be confirmed, since I was already travelling I did not have access to a printer and scanner as I needed to fill it out. The next day I went to the office of the hostel where I could fill in the form, but after that I had to go to a second place to pick up my key and a third place to get to the room I booked. It was not possible to pick up the key before 3 pm, so I had to pay 5 euroes to leave my luggage at the office and I had to go back there to pick it up after I had gotten the key. Basically I spent half the day getting in to my room and this was time I could not spend doing the things I had planned to do this day. Also there is nowhere to leave the luggage after checkout at 10 am, so it's a problem if you are leaving later.
- Thierry (4/5): Pas cher mais ça les vaut. - Equipement minimaliste.
